We were looking forward to a family meal at the Pool House at Lympstone Manor. My son trained at Exeter College and has fond memories of working with Michael Caines and my daughter in law worked at The Royal Clarence as front of house, again until Michael’s direction. Although the setting is very beautiful and the restaurant was comfortable for the children, the food was a great disappointment. We were not expecting Michelin Star quality however there was no excuse to serve customers with such badly produced food. I would have like to see the menu listing food sourced from the local producers for which Devon is so famous. Instead, it appears that the food had been sourced from supermarkets. The menu was unimaginative and old-fashioned serving cod courgettes which were dry and obviously had been frozen. The rest of the starters were similar to something one could have bought in Lidl’s. Putting turkey on the menu in February gives the impression of getting rid of leftovers from Christmas. A celeriac risotto was tasty but again unimaginative with only a sprinkling of parmesan on the top. None of the food was fresh, green beans were defrosted and swimming in water. It would have been considerably cheaper and better to have eaten at the Puffing Billy in Exton, just up the road. After this very disappointing meal to then be served with watery coffee was a real insult. However, the staff were the saving grace, both attentive and very helpful. We had a good game of tennis to round off the afternoon.
