Madcap, a one Michelin star restaurant in Marin, is a hidden gem that lives up to the hype. What sets Madcap apart from other Michelin restaurants in the San Francisco area is its lack of pretension. The atmosphere is intimate and relaxed, allowing diners to fully enjoy the exquisite flavors and impeccable service. While it would have been a nice touch to have the chef visit our table, the food more than made up for it. The menu offers a harmonious blend of Japanese and French influences, making for a truly unique and memorable culinary experience. The artwork throughout the restaurant is fascinating and provides a great conversation starter, while the genuine and kind staff make you feel right at home. As my 50th Michelin restaurant, Madcap was a special milestone, and it's all the more meaningful that it's right in my own neighborhood. Highly recommended for any foodie looking for an unforgettable dining experience, especially in Marin!

Not just delicious everything, but also artistic design that you may find in a quiet hidden corner Im Marin County, San Anselmo. You will love it.
Be the first to ReplyWe've been going to Madcap for the past several years but
We've been going to Madcap for the past several years but realized we hadn't been since the pandemic and decided to celebrate an anniversary there recently. Although the prices are much higher than when we first had their prix fixe menu, the quality was pretty much the same, if not better. There were a few dishes that were absolute standouts in my mind - perfectly balanced flavor combinations, beautiful plating... the kind of dishes you wouldn't mind having seconds (or thirds) of :) 1. Dry-aged Flannery ribeye - beautiful crust, but still perfectly medium rare - I could go back tomorrow just to have this again. 2. Ora king salmon - when I saw it came with a red wine reduction, I was a bit skeptical of whether the delicate salmon could stand up to the red wine sauce, but I was so wrong about this. Perfectly executed, the salmon had the lightest, crispiest crust, while still being warm in the center and super delicate. 3. Stonington sea scallop - I'm a sucker for sea scallops and this was a delicious prep. The scallop had a beautiful crust, but since they were on the smaller side, I'd say they were a tad bit overcooked based on my own personal preference. Overall, the composition of flavors in this dish was spectacular and would've topped my list of the dishes had the scallop been a bit more tender. 4. Chicken tortelloni - rich creamy sauce, black truffles, and morels - what's not to like? If you're drinking red Burgundy for dinner, this dish is absolutely made for Pinot (IMO). While all of the dishes were good, some felt less polished or we just weren't as big of a fan of the flavor combinations/textures. Among them were the shrimp hasami (mine wasn't particularly crispy and with a rich satay sauce, it just felt like it needed some sort of acid component to cut through it all) and sadly the abalone/kaluga caviar supplement ($35) - impressive ingredients on their own, but combined in a way that, while perhaps visually appealing, was somewhat difficult to eat and I didn't find that the flavors were as cohesive as other dishes. That being said, what I like about Madcap is that they continue to innovate and experiment. Some of those dishes may not be my personal favorites, but others may love them, and it's great to know that no matter how often I come back, I'll always experience something new. The service is exceptional, but without being too stuffy and formal. Whether you're dining alone, as a couple, or as a group of friends, you can relax, enjoy the delicious food, and have a great time without feeling like you need to sit up straight and whisper to each other :) Lastly, they have a phenomenal wine list, especially bottles from Burgundy. The prices are reasonable (I looked a several bottles and they were about 75-100% above retail, e.g., $50 retail bottle might sell for $100 on their list), especially for a Michelin-starred restaurant. They also offer a beverage pairing ($100), which was mostly wine but also included some sake. The corkage fee is $50 (quite steep, IMHO) per 750ml bottle with a limit of two bottles per table.

A friend recommended this place to me - mentioning it was a Japanese/French tasting experience. The mix of cuisines were too intriguing to resist, so I found myself at Madcap a week later. It was definitely an enjoyable experience overall; from the cozy, intimate ambience, to the incredibly well designed & tasty courses topped off with impeccable service. My favorite dishes of the evening were the Stonington sea scallop & Somen, uni, oyster plant veloutė topped with caviar. Highly recommend if you're in the area - reservations are a must. I'll be back!

Madcap is a fantastic restaurant in San Anselmo with a delicious menu that leaves little to be desired. Attentive service, a quiet environment, and fantastic food awaits. Our experience here was flawless, we enjoyed a broad tasting menu and wine pairing. The trout, caviar, and egg dishes were among our favorites. Definitely worth a visit for someone looking to explore some of the finer restaurants in the North Bay.

Be the first to ReplyWe had great time at Mad Cap.
Every course was stunning in both presentation and the flavors evoked. The service was as quietly unobtrusive. Even the dishes used in each course were beautiful and unique. The whole experience was magic.

How has it taken me so long to finally get to Madcap? Two of us went for dinner and the combination of a talented chef, wonderful service and cozy atmosphere was magic. The chef's menu being the one choice made decision making easy- the entire menu is included with one option of the caviar course. Each small course was presented beautifully and explained in turn and I fully enjoyed the incredible flavor adventure the entire experience provided. Gentle easy timing of the courses was truly appreciated, and the individual course sizes and number was just right. Presentation on specialized ceramics was an elegant touch that framed the beautiful offerings. Though a high end restaurant the prices are incredibly reasonable for this level of restaurant. The wine list was very nicely curated and offered special bottles at many price points. I'll definitely be back.

My hubby and I celebrated Valentine's day 2/14/23 here last week. Parking lot is small and full so we went around and parked in a residential neighborhood in the back of the restaurant and walked through a pedestrian bridge over a stream to get back onto Sir Francis Drake blvd. We were greeted immediately when we arrived and taken to a small table in the second dining room of the restaurant all the way in the back corner. My left shoulder was squished up against the fire extinguisher hanging on the wall behind me. Not a good spot to put an extinguisher especially because the tables are so small already and pushed up against the corner. I was not too comfortable the whole night. We had the set Valentine's Day menu. I made a note during the reservation and also via email that my husband doesnt eat seafood and I dont eat raw foods. Was disappointed to see the menu was the "standard" Valentine's day menu that everyone received. Small touches like menu changes makes a difference especially when you are charging $200/pp plus a mandatory 20% tip it came to over $500 for dinner. Yikes! Now the menu changes was noted but I was told, they didnt want to print separate menus for it. Got it.Food was not bad, many flavors. The menu starts of small and gradually increases to bigger portions. Even the bigger portions were pretty tiny but plenty of dishes and by the end of the night, I was stuffed. Some of my favorites were the chestnut soup, smoked pork belly bao, chilled dungeness crab and the ribeye. My least favorite was the sonoma duck breast, Im not a fan of duck so sent it back. The slow cooked egg was also not my favorite. Middle of dinner, I had a bad migraine come on. I dont know what it was. Maybe just being squished up against the wall or just a long drawn out dinner. We were there for 2.5 hours. I have no idea. Either way, it was a nice Valentine's dinner, we both enjoyed it a lot. Service was not bad, we had various people come serve us throughout the night. Overall, ok Michelin experience.
Be the first to ReplyMadcap has been on my to-try Michelin star list.
Once we found out that Madcap is increasing their price from $125 to $140 per person, we immediately made reservation. Our whole dining experience took around of 2 - 2.5 hours. We were seated in the entrance room, near the bustling front counter. Our dining experience was quite chaotic. The employees were constantly near our table getting utensils and walking by us. We both agreed that service was not exceptional to be charged 20% gratuity automatically. Usually at a higher end restaurant, we would be served by one server. During our dining experience, we were served by four different servers. From the way the staff took turns dropping off our food and gave us a brief explanation of each dish, we felt like there was no intimate connection. ** I recommend sitting in the other room for its cozy dim lights and intimate date night atmosphere. Every dish was beautifully plated. Although portion was on the smaller side, keep in mind that the menu is pretty extensive. We were pretty full by the end of the night. However, two dishes (salmon and steak) were on the saltier side and taste was not well blended. Overall taste was unique and delightful. It was an intriguing experience to see how the chef blended and incorporated French and Japanese elements throughout the tasting menu.

Bay Area Food A niche, cost-effective Japanese-French restaurant suitable for dating|||[Madcap] It has been raining in the Bay Area, so the winery that was supposed to be booked was canceled, but I still drove to this restaurant that has been a favorite. Madcap is a Michelin-starred restaurant specializing in Japanese fusion. Chef Siegel has won the Japanese iron chef competition and also trained in the French Laundry, so he is looking forward to his Japanese-French fusion cuisine. The restaurant offers ten-course tasting, which can be said to be very close to the people in the Bay Area [Wow R] complimentary bitesDelicate morsels served by the chef, I like the chestnut puree very much lobster carrot parfaitLobster Bisque with Sweet Crunch iwashiSardines are served with pickled radish and yuzu vinegar, very appetizing dungeness crabNewly launched Dungeness crab, paired with fresh fruity puree caviar $30Extra caviar, served with fried fish balls, I feel a little ordinary some noodlesJapanese-style plain noodles served with shrimp tempura. Compared with some American restaurants, the environment is quieter. It is also worth mentioning that, as a fine dining, the restaurant actually calculates tips strictly according to pre-tax, which is really conscientious. This restaurant across the Sanfan Bridge is definitely a very good choice [like R] Madcap, 198 Sir Francis Drake Blvd, San Anselmo, CA 94960

We had family from out of town visit, so what better way to celebrate than dinner at Madcap? Our dinner started immediately after sitting down because we had to finish in 2.5 hours to clear the table for the next seating. Every dish was beautiful. The plating was a work of art, and the pottery was gorgeous. My favorite dish was the slow cooked egg. It was creamy and so comforting paired with the buttery toast. I also loved the shiso ice cream, which was so refreshing. Every dish was flavorful. My only comment was that the same flavors were similar among many dishes. The dashi broth, yuzu, and radish were common, and though delicious, I was hoping for a broader range of flavors. Service was great. However, towards the end of the meal, we felt rushed to finish on time. We had 2 people with food allergies at the table, and although they asked about allergies and made accommodations, it was a little concerning that the modified dishes were served to the wrong people. We made sure to confirm with each dish. No allergic reactions that night, so yay! Overall, it was a great experience, and we had a wonderful evening.
Be the first to ReplyAs great as ever.
Madcap remains one of the best values in fine dining in the Bay Area. Food is sublime - from ingredient quality, to presentation, to execution, to flavor. However, they could do with offering a beverage pairing, and timing could be improved. We were there for nearly 3 hours, with long waits in between some courses.Total for two, all-in, two tasting menus ($125 each) with two glasses of wine and two beers: $398Food - 5Service - 4Ambiance - 4.5Value - 4.5
