Excellent meal
First time here. Had drinks at the bar. Started with the seafood tower which was excellent, especially for the price. Had a pasta and a seafood dish, both excellent. Service was patient if not a bit slow. Overall amazing seafood at reasonable Boston prices. Great wine list. We will be back!
Be the first to ReplySome good Italian at North End prices
Mare is one of a large conglomerate of restaurants in the North end. This might make it a little less special for you or it might not matter. The DePasquale 'venture' seems to own half the North end with various incarnations of Italian food and Mare is their oyster bar/restaurant offering. The outside room abutting the causeway really needs a redesign for winter. It's really, really drafty with plastic windows and on a cold night like Christmas eve I had to throw my winter jacket over my lap to keep from freezing. Service was efficient if not exactly fawning. The burrata salad with grilled peach and imported prosciutto was simply divine. The best version of it I've had. Swoon worthy. Bread comes with some green olives, good olive oil and a bit of pesto. Lobster bisque was quite good, though not like the velvety smooth ones that really sing, this was thickened with bread with good lobster taste but at $22 for a serving I found it decidedly over priced. Our pasta mains were the $34 cacio e pepe with black truffles served table-side, prepared in a small wheel of Parmesan cheese and a good wild boar ragu that suffered from too heavy a hand with the salt. Both pastas were house-made. The cacio e pepe was good, maybe not worth $34 for the table-side show but the house-made pasta made the dish for me. Bread pudding was good if not great. Overall all the menus in the North end seem to be in the same price range and there's a noticeable premium on dishes here that may or may not be worth the price compared to other restaurants not in the North end. Mare is an enjoyable if not a revelatory experience that might suffer from a bit too much pride in the dishes at times once you get the bill.

Celebrated a birthday dinner 2 nights ago at Mare's. We have been there before and the service and food remains consistently outstanding. Guissepi provided excellent friendly and attentive service. Reccomend grilled octopus and steamed clams for an appetizer. The encrusted tuna and lobster ravioli were were cooked perfectly and were quite flavorful. We were pleasantly surprised at the end of the meal with a special birthday dessert. I have been to many restaurants in the North End and look forward to returning to Mare's.
Be the first to ReplyGreat spot with excellent seafood.
This place is down a little alley in the North End. I sat at the bar, but the tables outside looked great too. The oyster menu had 6 or 7 options, and the crudo list was also good. All of the food was amazing, and the service and suggestions from the bartender was also very good. They specialize in Italian wine varietals and had some lovely options. I can't wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplySuperb Dinner
We came here for dinner based on its proximity to our hotel and TripAdvisor reviews. The reviews are pretty much on with our experience. We had an 8:30 pm reservation and waited until close to 9:00 pm for our table. It was a very rainy night so perhaps people normally on the patio were inside? Not a problem, we had a drink at the bar and had a nice chat with the bartender. Once seated, service was excellent. we all had pasta; a tagliatelle, lobster ravioli and a spaghetti. All were outstanding. Fresh pasta, delicious sauce, served hot: this is real Italian food. We also shared a couple of deserts, a tiramisu and a chocolate soufflé, both were excellent. So, after waiting for a table, everything was excellent: food, service and ambience. As others have mentioned, it is fairly pricy but as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. Many cheers .......

Fresh, incredibly prepared and inventive fish! Delicisous pastas! All served in a great environment by friendly staff. The truffle encrusted tuna was some of the very best tuna I had in years, as was the spagetti with fresh basil and parm. Need I say more? We'll be back!
Be the first to ReplyStill hip and food is consistently good after all these years.
Several popular North End restaurants became commercialized and lost their touch. Some of my favorite dishes aren’t as good as it used to be. Mare is on the other hand has stayed reliably good. Always a good time. A lively evening. I still love their trio crudo, mussels, clams, lobster ravioli, seafood risotto and lobster bisque. I’d avoid the bread pudding. It’s not as good as it sounds on the menu. Kinda dry. Go for the tiramisu and mini cannolis. Yum! Excellent service. Staff is warm and efficient. (Sorry my photos didn’t do justice…)
Be the first to ReplyMare Restaurant is OUTSTANDING!
This restaurant was OUTSTANDING and the staff was beyond amazing! Our waiter Gaetano was exceptional! He made sure everything was top notch for our dining experience. All the food was delicious! We had the Seafood Tower and the stuffed Lobster! All the Appetizers and Main courses are consistent, tasty and delicious! You could not ask for a better place to eat in Boston. I would highly recommend eating at Mare Restaurant. Thank you Gaetano for such a wonderful dining experience! We cannot wait to come back to eat at Mare Restaurant again. It is a great place to celebrate too! Such a wonderful selection of wines and delicious food choices.
Be the first to ReplyHomemade Pasta, Pricey, Outstanding Dessert
Outstanding dessert and service, but the oysters weren’t so great and the lobster a little small, and a little pricey. A cool atmosphere and there was homemade pasta. The deconstructed tiramisu and amaretto dessert, paired with port, were great.
Be the first to ReplySplendid food—just overpriced.
Our friend suggested Mare—and after eating there, I know why. Looking at the menu, almost all were overpriced. Usually $21 would serve as my entire dinner, for my family and I. But here, according the menu, was only an appetizer or a simple entree. I decided to go with the lobster roll (served hot; with butter) with fries. The others ordered Mare Risotto and swordfish. While waiting for the food, we were served a small appetizer to the appetizer. Crunchy, fresh bread with olive pesto, olive oil, or just plain olive. For a simple appetizer, it was delicious, even though I was not exactly an olive lover. 30 minutes later, we were served. The lobster roll was hot and buttery…thought a bit too buttery for me. The fries were delicious, oh so crunchy. With the meal was a cute, small ketchup bottle. My 2 other family members had ordered the Mare risotto and swordfish. One described the risotto “tastes too much like tomato, and much too moist”. The risotto was similar to the paella, in my opinion. I enjoyed the risotto’s rice and calamari. The swordfish was rather healthy, the other said, grilled but tender, with vegetables laying at the bottom, like a tasty surprise. Mare’s was a delicious, yet overpriced, restaurant. Much too fancy for my taste. I suggest a local restaurant, like at the market, because it seems like the lobster there is more fresh. The lobster roll was tasting better than Mare’s. But it was a delight, eating at Mare’s, with the ambience and such. It seemed as though there were too many staff, waiters. But Mare’s is a delight.
Be the first to ReplySuperb Italian Oyster Bar
Mare Oyster Bar is one of many, many Italian restaurants in Boston’s North End but this has to be a standout. Small, intimate and set back on a side street, this busy place with its loud but cool music was recommended by my hotel concierge. It’s a hip place but completely unpretentious. I ate at the bar and was cared for by an amazing bar tender/waitress. A dozen delectable oysters was followed by an incredible lobster ravioli that had me oohing and aaahing to myself, even though I was on my own. My neighbors at the bar thought I was talking to myself and must’ve thought I was nuts! There’s plenty of places to eat in Boston but this has to be a standout! Try it, I don’t think you’ll be sorry!
Be the first to ReplyLovely evening with great selection of oysters
Make a reservation. We arrived about 15 minutes before our reservation and were quickly seated and attended to. The service was excellent and the food was good - not mind-blowing, but good. They have pasta, salads, sandwiches and, if course, oysters. Thus is a good place to try several different kinds of oysters at once. It looks crowded but surprisingly you can still talk to your companion and not overhear everything the next table is saying.
Be the first to ReplyFine dinning with great food
You need reservations because this place is busy. We were seated right away and the waiter was marvelous. I had the swordfish and it came with a great sauce and beans. My wife had the salmon and had great flavor and cooked perfectly. The mash potatoes with lobster was a nice side dish. My only complaint is that they have music playing in the background and it is much to loud. The noise level made it hard to hear our friends talk. They have a large staff and but we had a leisurely meal. Will be back.

The concierge made our reservations, and it did not disappoint!!! We had patio dining in a lovely setting. The food was authentic Italian, with breads, sauces, and pastas, handmade. I had a seafood risotto and my husband had a seafood gnocchi in tomato sauce We could easily have shared since the portion size was so generous. The staff were warm and welcoming, and our dinner was leisurely. It was a great way to start our Boston trip!

"Mare" has all the amenities a dining experience should have to make for a beautiful and memorable evening. Located in Boston's North End, it's an experience more than just a restaurant. Enter through Bricco Alley to experience their bakery and then walk through the Salumeria and buy their Olive oil which is served in abundance with their bread at your table.
A fire pit to gather round with a signature drink( an Italian Mule for me) before dinner, patio dining opened to the sky on dry evenings and of course the service and the amazing food complete the picture. I think we've had just about everything on their unique menu and there isn't one dish we wouldn't recommend, although the stuffed zucchini leaves does bring tears to my eyes. The staff is so friendly, attentive and always welcoming. Everyone feels like a "special customer" at Mare from the moment you walk in the door! The wonderful Rosario Apuzzo, manager, makes your time at
Mare memorable and fun and the very best experience you can have dining out as does manager Paul McAvoy who checks in with guests and does not miss a table! Thank you Rosario and Paul and everyone at Mare…you’re the very best!

Great food in an eclectic area
My sister and I went to Mare Oyster bar in the Little Italy section of Boston. We had a reservation at this restaurant and were quickly seated. It is a beautiful restaurant with patio seating available. I ordered the lobster ravioli and it was marvelous. Small pieces of lobster with fava beans and an excellent sauce with small bits of bacon. Great service and a fun atmosphere. Great for dates, but the small space may be too confining for children.
Be the first to ReplyOh my x10
Get a reservation for sure, sent here from hotel, wow. Hose made bread, olives, evoo and roasted garlic on the side. Had craft cocktail to start, Italian version of old fashioned, very good.
A bowl of wonderful lobster bisque with huge chunks of yummy lobster... excellent.
Had pasta with lobster and shaved black truffle, oh my the combo was unbelievable.
A couple of nice glasses of italian chardonnay and I was ready to throw in the towel, how ever I came up with room for some decadent lemon chello.
Service is spot on from start to finish, ask for Rivera's section.
Fun vibe and excellent food.
Fun vibe and excellent food. Seafood tower was incredible, great drinks, excellent service. Great location tucked away behind Hanover St in the North End. My only complaint is that the music is REALLY loud on the back patio, especially if there is a speaker right at your table.
Be the first to ReplyNot my best dining experience
As I ate the 8 oz filet mignon, I noted a strange taste that I could not identify. I can only believe that the beef was not fresh. I ordered the chocolate mousse. A small cup of warm chocolate cake was served. It was not a mousse.
