Good experience, although I expected a little more
Good food, without being spectacular either. Good dry service. The best: the decoration and atmosphere. The Stroganoff was very good.

Very pretty and charming place with barely competent service. Go for the various vodkas and for the desserts. Avoid the appetizers and entrees which went from OK to oily.

A very nice restaurant with a unique atmosphere. I felt like I was back in USSR. Everything looked like I went back in time. The food was delicious, fresh and very tasty. The service was fast and with a smile. Highly recommended. My kids liked it as well. We were a group of 9, we ordered ahead and the restaurant was full so I recommend to order a table in advance especially for a large group.

My friends and I come here on a regular basis! Food is always amazing and service is spot on. Olexey makes our visit extra special!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Russian restaurant
I've been dying to try Russian food for some time. When I saw I was going to be traveling to DC for a work conference, I knew this would be my opportunity. I went on a Friday evening. I made the mistake of not having a reservation, but they were still able to accommodate me. I had the borscht and the beef stroganoff. The waitress recommended a Ukrainian beer to go with it. It was all wonderful!!
Be the first to ReplyWe were let down
Although the ambiance and setting are delightful, this restaurant comes up short in the service and food department. We had to flag down our waiter for water and drinks and our waiter was rushing us to decide and not very helpful in answering questions about the items on the menu. Our son had the best meal with beef skewers. My meal of stuffed cabbage had too much of one spice and was overpowered with tomato sauce. Maybe it was a coincidence, but I didnโt feel well the next day. I felt as if all of our questions were a burden to our waiter and we were a nuisance family. It was very expensive and not a pleasant experience.

Really enjoyed our meal. Atmosphere was warm and kitschy without being cheesy. We really enjoyed our meals and drinks. Bonus points for everything being served at the right temperature.
Be the first to ReplyIt was great
There was just two of us dining at the restaurant, and it was great. We had red caviar and Blinis. With trimmings of sour cream , salmon and veggies The entrees were good, then came the yummiest dessert. The Napoleon was huge it took 2 diners to finish it

I have eaten at the NYC location many times over the years but it was first time in Washington and as always didnโt disappoint. Great service. Fun decor taking me back to childhood times in the USSR and most importantly delicious food. We started off with a round of vodka tasting. Then shared some small plates - egg plant rolls, variety of pickled vegetables, herring under fur coat :), potato dumplings with fried onions, meat dumplings (pelmeni). Finished strong with two amazing desserts - medovik cake (honey cake) and a napoleon.

Visited here whilst on business trip and had a fantastic time. Lovely cosy restaurant with a very nice ambience . Staff were extremely friendly and attentive and helped with menu choices. Food was absolutely delicious and I highly recommend this place if you are in DC
Be the first to ReplyGreat place with delicious food.
Had dinner with my husband today here. Great selection of food, amazing service and cozy atmosphere. Will come back if in WA DC again.
Be the first to ReplyWe visited three times!
As with others, we discovered this gem close to our hotel. Came twice for dinner and once for desert. That shows how much we enjoyed the food and eating there.

Husband and I stayed at the Mayflower Hotel for a fun weekend. This restaurant is a block away and recommended by a friend. We had a delightful dinner. The decor is so cozy, you feel like you are in someoneโs home. We had the caviar and salmon appetizer, easily shared by two. Hubby had the Beef Stroganoff, delicious, and I had the grilled lamb chops, equally delicious. We got the side of grilled vegetables, which were not overly grilled. We shared the honey cake, which is to die for!! Everything is fresh prepared, home cooked. The owner and staff checked on us several times. We will definitely visit this darling restaurant next time we are in DC.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent borscht!
Cozy restaurant with vodka flights, traditional food, and desserts that go to support Ukraine. The borscht was excellent!

Delightful find.
Unexpected gem. Ate at the bar, food was very good and atmosphere was nice for intimate dinner conversation. Will visit again.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional meal and ambience
Like other reviewers we happened upon this place as it was a block from our hotel. We tried to walk-in on Friday night but they were full up for 3 hours. Took that as a good sign and made reservations for Monday night. Mari Vanna is a small place and it is decorated quite tatefully like a Russian kitchen and staff dresses in traditional attire. My wife had a cocktail and I got the 5 shoots of infused vodkas to share. Not really a big drinker but highly recommend the shots. They were so flavourful. We ordered the Pelmeni for an appitizer. They were fantastic. I had the lamb shank, my wife the Chicken Kiev, and my daughter had the Beef Stroganoff. All the entrees were top notch. The Stroganoff was nothing like any we ever had. The serving were generous but save room for dessert. We shared the Nepoleon. We were blown away. I actually came back during our stay and got one after a day at the museums. My daughter can't wait to take her freinds there and we will definetly have reservations when we return.
Be the first to ReplyFirst Time for Russian Dining
We were in DC on Christmas night and we walked down the street from our hotel looking for something that was open for dinner. We happened upon Mari Vanna and boy are we glad we did. Being from the South, we didn't have many Russian options. I had the Chicken Kiev and my wife had the Potato Verenki. We wound up sharing both and it was the best meal we had while in Washington. We really hope to visit again one day and we suggest that you make this a "must have" while in DC.
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic and great quality
Every time I come to DC a pay a visit to this place and they never disappoint me. Service is really good. They keep checking on you all the time. Food quality is consistnt and great. It tastes exactly like you would expect - and, if you are Russian, like your grandma would prepare.
I don't have to write much. This place is a no brainer. Food as expected, great service, reasonable prices. Go for it! Ah, make sure to make a reservation. They get busy real quick.
Russia on the Patomac
We dropped in with the intention of having a cocktail and stayed for dinner. Beef stroganoff and pelmeni followed by a nepolian pastry. My God, this was a magnificent meal. Finish with black tea.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Russian Restaurant
Four years later I revisited Mari Vanna and was very happy I did. The atmosphere and service were wonderful and this time I chose better dishes. Both the cured herring and Potato Vareniki were quite delicious but the Tatyana Larina was revelatory.
As for drinks, I very much enjoyed a Russian Porter, the Baltika #6, and an Estonian Imperial Double Stout from A. Le Coq.
Really a very lovely evening.
Russian place in DC
Interesting and very nice Russian/ Georgian restaurant! Itโs a very quaint place with traditional food thatโs delicious. We had stroganoff which was very tender and a bit different as it was done with grains rather than a bed of noodles. Drinks preceded and were also very nice and well poured. Dumplings were split for all and they were also excellent and reminded me a bit of some dim sum. We had to try deserts and the best honestly was the Russian layered honey cake! I would definitely recommend this place for a great experience. The food is rustic and can be heavy for some but you walk so much in DC you can afford the calories for a great experience !
Be the first to ReplyLittle taste of Georgia on Connecticut
Great for special occasions. We had the khinkali, herring under fur coat, Olivia salad, pilmeni, and cherry verenikis. All excellent. They have borjormi and saparavi. Mix of Georgian and Russian cuisine. Khinkali was pretty juicy with a texture close to what you would get in Georgia. Somewhat more $$ than Tbilisi prices. The cherry vereniki were amazing. Our Russian server was super helpful. Will go again
