There was a lot of hype in the build up to dining here.
Set degustation menus over the course of a few hours in a small limited seating restaurant. There is a lot of seafood on the current menu, and for someone who doesn't eat a great a deal of seafood, I found it quite enjoyable. Saying that the scallop sashimi didn't taste quite right.Highlight of the meal was definitely the chicken dish, but all in all, was a good night. Not sure it lived up to the hype, but given the chance I would give it another go, but it is near impossible to get a booking, so who knows.

.Wow! I was there when you first opened in leong, situated in a tiny fish and chip shop.I remember the time so clearly as each dish that came out was just amazing.A few years later, you've opened in a new location. Not only have you grown, but oh my lord! The flavours and the creativity of the dishes was much better than last time. It's a degustation, a feast I would say. 7 dishes in 3 hours, and my god I enjoyed every minute and every dish. The service was amazing and the owners even come to chat to every table.Such a beautifully presented restaurant, with an intimate setting and with food to die for.I would highly recommend this place as I could not fault it one bit.Marumo, wow.. You left me speechless .
Be the first to ReplyDelicious good, great service.
Really good value and highly recommended for a nice night out. Also worth noting our group had a combination of dietary requirements (gluten and dairy) - all handled perfectly without any fuss or compromising on flavour.
Be the first to ReplyThe best omakase so far in Perth.
Location was a bit tricky as the signage is subtle and delicate. But this secret gem is not only a romantic hideaway it is also great value for money. The place only seats 30 people and trying to get a booking was like winning the lotto, but we'll worth the wait. The menu is seasonal so u don't know what's on offer which gives it an exciting experience to look forward too. Great place for an intimate date. Definitely will be returning.

Jennie and I are a couple of giddy kippers as we arrive at Japanese restaurant Marumo. I've been looking forward to visiting this much buzzed about Japanese spot for what seems like a lifetime (well, months and months!). I'm ever so curious to find out if it's worth the hype. Bookings only open once a month and go in a matter of minutes, so we'd been trying for a few moths to snap up a table. The service is warm and friendly and you can't go past the $60 Omakase set menu with endless green tea included (BYO drinks). Fantastic value! I loved each and every one of the seven courses - my dish of the night is the Tasmanian salmon belly sushi. It looks absolutely stunning topped with shimmering orange fish roe. Our waitress gives us the tip that it's best to eat each piece of sushi in one mouthful, so we taste all of the components of the dish in one hit. It's a tad unladylike, but we shove each morsel into our mouths as gracefully as we can with chopsticks. The sushi tastes A-Mazing! All in all Marumo is a fab little restaurant, the food by their Head (and only) Chef is stunning. if you want to dine there before Christmas, I'd get booking NOW!

Marumo has something of a cult following in Perth and books out 3 months in advance. If luck favours you, then you will join a handful of other delighted customers for a 7 course Japanese omakase (chef's choice) set menu dinner for $60.Our first course was a ball of silky egg tofu with tender chicken hidden inside, topped with fried leeks. I loved the warm savoury sauce. The chilled Angus beef tataki was a gorgeous marbled pink, only very lightly seared and sliced paper thin. I enjoyed the light smoky taste and gentle vinegary dressing. Yum!Next up was unagi (eel). The highlights: tender and perfectly cooked eel without a squidgy skin layer and fun puffed rice bubbles. However, I found the fragrant green tea and sour plum broth washed away the delicate BBQ flavour of the eel.We were presented with an ice boat of super fresh sashimi (raw fish). I enjoyed the fresh and fierce wasabi (horseradish), the divine jelly-like Hokkaido scallops, and the silky Tasmanian salmon. The seared salmon belly sushi had a delightfully crunchy tempura king prawn inside and stunning orange fish roe piled on top. The main moved away from traditional Japanese fare. A gorgeous medium-rare hunk of lamb sat on quinoa, carrot puree, cherry tomato and an unusual "hollandaise" sauce which contained egg, garlic and onion.Suddenly, we reached the end! Our dessert course was a creamy coconut pana cotta with a yuzu and shiso sorbet. The nectarine, white chocolate and nut crumble added some texture.Dinner includes free unlimited green tea and you can also BYO for $2.50pp! The food starts arriving immediately, but it takes about 2.5 hours to get through all the courses. Service is very attentive and friendly.

Chef Moe, you've done it again! It's been a year since my last visit and I've walked out of Marumo for the third time with a smile on my face and a deliriously happy tummy! Marumo offers one Omakase (Chef's Selection) menu every month consisting of seven courses plus a small amusé salad and a refreshing palate cleanser after the fifth course. All for $60. This price also includes unlimited hot green tea. The entire meal will take about 3 or so hours which allows every morsel placed before you to be enjoyed slowly. Here's a breakdown of last night's menu:Squid Salad Amusé - I have to admit I always get worried when this comes out as it's the tiniest portion ever. As in, fits-on-a-Barbie-plate tiny portion. Then I remind myself this is not one of the seven courses and all is good in my world again.Tamago, Lobster & Caviar - When this dish was served and everyone had a taste, I think there was a silence as we all took a moment to savor the delicate tamago. This steamed egg soufflé in the most amazing broth simply melts in your mouth! The lobster and caviar provided a nice change up to the soft texture.Fremantle Cod & Burdock - Lightly battered pan-fried cod served on burdock root. The sauce in this dish was so flavorful!Duck, Inari & Cabbage - This one's the absolute winner!! It is duck after all so there really is no competition. The duck slices were cooked to perfection and the potato mash-stuffed inari (deep fried tofu pouches) blew my mind! The thinly shredded cabbage salad was a nice touch.Chef's Selection of Sashimi - Beautiful, fresh slices of kingfish, salmon and scallops. And I always keep the scallops for last...mmmmmmmm.....Tasmanian Salmon Belly Sushi - Get it my belly. And stay there!!Orange Sorbet Palate Cleanser - If they told me THIS was the dessert, I would gladly accept! The most refreshing citrus palate cleanser with bits of orange peel. Love this!Beef & Pumpkin - A succulent piece of beef with a sweet, puréed pumpkin sauce, edamame beans, lotus crisp and a tiny dollop of yuzu chilli. The yuzu chilli was interesting and packed a bit of a spicy punch. Might be an acquired taste for some. Black Sesame, Yuzu & Blueberry - I want this EVERY day of my life. That is all.Even though the portions for each course weren't huge, by the end of the evening, I was pretty full and content. For those with bottomless pits and hollow legs, Chelsea Pizza is next door and open till midnight...LOL...Open Tuesday through Saturday for dinner only, bookings are really difficult to secure and can only be done online for 2 months in advance. You pretty much have to set an alarm to remind yourself when the booking window is open and then cross your fingers that you get a reservation. My lovely friend booked out the entire restaurant (which seats about 28 people) but apparently, Marumo no longer do private functions. The maximum booking is now only for 6 people.I suggest you set your alarms now.

$60 for a high quality Japanese fusion degustation dining experience, what else do you want? Takes a very long time to get in, and they have no bar so you must BYO, but you can't deduct marks when ..... it's $60.
Be the first to ReplyBest Japanese fusion restaurant in town! Though it took us
Best Japanese fusion restaurant in town! Though it took us three months, but we finally managed to grab a table for five a few weeks before study break, which is absolutely delightful. Our menu today consisted of the following:Albacore tuna, avocado and mentaikobeef tenderloin with ponzuDuck and cornChef's selection of sashimi (hamasaki kingfish, Tasmanian salmon and Hokkaiddo Scallops)Tasmanian salmon belly sushimiso Barramundi and parsnipstrawberry, yuzu and green tea.Of all the dishes, the sushi was the best! I am not kidding, they have the best sushi in Perth. The salmon belly was slightly seared, and the sushi roll was filled with freshly cooked tiger prawn tempura. The prawn tempura's coating was still crunchy when you bite into it! The mayo on top was also slightly seared, giving it an extra smoky flavour; it was just divine! But honestly though, everything was gorgeous, the flavours all well balanced and ingredients so fresh. You can certainly taste that the chef has put a lot of effort into these dishes.
