Mediterranean Exploration Company Portland Reviews from The Last Year
Just celebrated our 9 year anniversary and wow!! Food,
Just celebrated our 9 year anniversary and wow!! Food, service, drinks and atmosphere were all 5 star. Food: Radicchio salad was our favorite! But the sesame mousse was so good my husband who doesn't like dessert ate most of it! We were SO FULL because everything was so tasty we couldn't stop eating. Service: our server Cookie was so kind and knowledgeable. Great menu recommendations and the entire staff ensured we had what we needed and wanted. Drinks: Cookie recommended the exact wine I was craving. Hubby said the old fashioned was delicious also! Atmosphere: lively, busy but not rushed, and every staff member we encountered were so kind and attentive. They all wished us a happy anniversary and genuinely cared about our experience. This was honestly one of the best dining experiences we've had in a long time. Couldn't recommend them enough and can't wait to come back!! Incredible.
We sat on the patio and it was a lovely summer evening.
The waiter talked through the menu and offered vegan options. The hummus and mushrooms were delicious. The pita was warm and amazing. It was our anniversary and gave us dessert. The chocolate ice cream was INCREDIBLE.
Love their happy hour except now it ends at 5pm, which is
Love their happy hour except now it ends at 5pm, which is unfortunate. There radicchio salad is super yummy
Wow wow wow.
We ordered five plates for two people. Fennel salad, so earthy. Octopus for my friend who is not vegetarian, where as I am. Artichokes, with a nice tahini and citrus flavor. Mushrooms with nice lentils underneath. All great! 100% recommend.
Absolutely delicious Mediterranean food! Based on my
Absolutely delicious Mediterranean food! Based on my experience, the vegetarian dishes are the forte here. We ordered: 1. Fennel Salad - crisp and refreshing, and the fennel gives that different anise-flavor. I also enjoyed the oranges and candied almonds for extra flavor and texture. 2. Roasted Eggplant Dip - if you're a babaganoush fan, this is for you! 3. Fasolakia Hummus - this is a *MUST*. Even the pickiest eater in our party wanted to lick the plate clean! 4. Spiced Maitake Mushrooms - another *MUST ORDER*! The mushrooms were prepared perfectly with a slight crispy char and the black garlic sauce was out of this world!! I wish I could have bought a jar of it! 5. Grilled Octopus - this was good, but I expected more from the dish than just two pieces of octopus, one of which was a bit overcooked and rubbery. 6. Adana Lamb Kebab - Pretty good and definitely not game-y I also enjoyed the Arak and a Hard Place cocktail and the Turkish coffee for dessert was very authentic and delicious. The rhubarb dessert we ordered was good too! Sit outside on a warm evening and enjoy!
This is the best Mediterranean food I ever had.
Everything is so delicious and flavorful. Lamb chop is the best I ever tasted. These comments are coming from a well traveled person who loves lamb. I hope I get the message across. Service is nice and the ambiance is great too. I would visit again next time I am in Portland.
"Exploring" is going somewhere unfamiliar.
It doesn't usually include the urge to lick the plates, but maybe it should, especially if you are going to eat here. The flavors were a surprisingly rich combination of the unexpected, but in a delightful way. They had a lot of vegetarian options , and we decided to nibble our way across the menu, family style. My suggestions? Try the salt roasted beets -perfectly roasted and lounging on a pool of tahina with herbs, Fennel salad- with a slightly citrusy vinagarette and sweet almonds for crunch, Labneh -topped with crispy artichokes and a sauce that perfectly balanced spicy with flavorful fruit over the base of tangy yogurt. Other top picks: spiced mushrooms on garlic spiced lentils, or the spinach & cheese Boureka. Any negatives?: our whole meal came with one single small piece of pita bread for three people to share, and a single small extra piece of bread is $3 each. For our $150 bucks, they could have provided extra bread. Would I go back? Oh yes!
Loved the food, flavors and ambience! Definitely a must
Loved the food, flavors and ambience! Definitely a must visit if you're in Portland. Service was prompt and the serverexplained the dishes well.
Was visiting pdx.
Wish this was in my town. All the delicious med dishes with unusual twists and platings. Interesting wine list and beautiful location. Would eat here often if I lived in Portlandia.
I was not expecting the food to be this good - this place
I was not expecting the food to be this good - this place nails Mediterranean nibbles! Service was warm, friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Interior and exterior are clean and modern. But it's all about the food. We kept ordering because it was so good... Drinks - my Turkish delight was terrific. But the white Negroni? Perfect for a hot summery day. Food - you wouldn't think olives would be much to write about. But these were so plump and juicy, well marinated, and since the were warm, so flavorful. The hummus was creamy with just the right amount of tahini and crispy lamb bits. The pita was warm and pillowy (we ordered another one to sop up all of the sauces). The falafel was crisp with a tender crumb, not dry like so many are. And the zhug was full of bright flavor. We had to order another one. Octopus was perfectly cooked and the oil needed to be stopped up with pita; it would have been a shame to waste it. The chicken meatballs were also crisp with a tender interior. The eggplant relish with slivered almonds was served cold/room temp, but did not deteriorate from the meatballs whatsoever. . I'll be back... you should go too!
Amazing!
The foods are amazing and the staff are accommodating. My family enjoyed the food and aside from it the ambiance is wonderful.
Wonderful Dinner Sitting at the Bar by the Grill
We made an early reservation and when we arrived they asked where would like to be seated. Some corner counter seats were available right by the grill which is our favorite place to sit when given the opportunity at a restaurant. We love watching the cooks! We sat next to 2 gentlemen who were regulars and their food looked great. We inquired into what they were eating (they were still on appetizers) and they said the Raddichio Salad and the Crispy Lamb Hummus. We ordered both and both were outstanding. Unlike our neighbors, those 2 dishes were enough food for the 2 of us, so we failed to order an entree. We had a nice bottle of Vermentino from Italy which was also great. Our server was Matthew and when my wife told him that she was allergic to bell peppers, he looked at all the items on the menu and made notes on what other ingredients, not listed, were in each dish. Outstanding and beyond the call of duty. Other members of the staff also visited with us and gave us recommendations. Overall, a delightful experience! Would highly recommend a visit. Should make a reservation as the place quickly filled up after we were seated.
Soggy fennel salad & incredibly salty crisp lamb
Was referred to this place by three different people, so had high expectations. Busy on Memorial weekend, but they found me a seat at their high top tables at the back of the restaurant. Ordered the fennel & orange & almond salad to start, which was really overdressed (and drowning in liquid), which resulted in limp fennel, but the flavors were good. The crispy lamb atop their hummus was incredibly oversalted(!) and I really tried to get past that, but after three bites I asked to substitute their plain hummus dish, and I’m really glad that I did. Server was very pleasant, and even brought me a new warm pita to accompany my second hummus dish. The presentation of their hummus is really beautiful, and the flavor combinations of the tahini, olive oil, and spices work beautifully. The thick “Israeli style” pita is superb, and their portions are generous (though expensive). Given the many options for Mediterranean food in Portland, I don’t feel compelled to return.
lots of greatness but doesnt quite bring it home
At first we were so impressed yet all of the dishes seemed the same and too rich. all were creamy with lots of oils. and the flavors did not stand out. shrimp dish was okay (not flavorful enough), the snap peas was too creamy. Interior is great, cocktails may have been the best part.
Amazing dinner
We went as a family group of 6 and must have tried 1/2 the menu. We loved everything from the initial Chai Mocktail. Do not miss the asparagus, the radicchio salad, the chicken meatballs, the lamb chops, the hanger steak... Maybe just order one of everything! Our service was friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. I'll be back on my next trip to PDX.
Hubby and I came on a whim one Saturday night.
No reservation but was able to get a table at the bar. Ordered the labnah, octopus, chicken meatballs and a slice of pistachio cake. Everything was on point. Service was friendly enough. Would come back and try more for sure.
One of my absolute favorite dinners on this trip! Skipped
One of my absolute favorite dinners on this trip! Skipped the drinks and just opted for water. For food we shared the following items: Beef-Bacon Wrapped Date: This was the most underwhelming item of the night, the combination of flavors and textures were too one-dimensional. I think an added element would have really elevated this dish but somethings is missing... Crispy Lamb Hummus: WOW this was so good, the flavors, the textures, wow I just wish they gave two pitas or some cucumbers with this cause one pita is not enough. Fried Brussel Sprouts: So addicting to eat, the spices and sauce used paired so well together Moroccan Brick Chicken: Moist flavorful chicken with a delicious arugula salad, so simple but so necessary for the table Grilled Octopus: Cooked to perfection and seasoned nicely, if I see octopus on the menu I order it Warm Pistachio Cake: a simple cake but could do with less white chocolate Service was okay, we barely saw our server after we ordered but other staff was friendly. We sat at the counter so we could see them preparing the food which was a cool experience. The ambiance is dark and cozy, would be great for a date night.
Their consistent good food, atmosphere and service doesn't
Their consistent good food, atmosphere and service doesn't go unnoticed. The menu selection is excellent and there's always something new to try.
Excellent, high quality food and prompt service.
My only complaint is that the table was too small for all of our plates. But the food is so flavorful and memorable and well worth the visit.
If a restaurant can get me to eat lamb and actually ENJOY
If a restaurant can get me to eat lamb and actually ENJOY it?! Then you really got somethin good. Came here for the first time on a Friday night and it was worth all the hype. The dishes are small plates - which I love - so keep in mind that you'll need to order quite a few depending on how hungry you are. I came for dinner with a friend and we started with the Hummus abu Hassan and their fresh baked pita... omg... I'm not even a hummus fan yall, but this one was amazing. Then we ordered the Pan Roasted Salmon and the Hawaij Spiced Carrots - both were perfect. And last but not least, the Lamb Chops. INSANE. I don't like lamb and will never go out of my way to order it or even try a bite when my husband orders it anywhere. But their lamb chops here, I will come back for. I usually will take pictures of my food to post on here, but I was truly enjoying my meal so much that I didn't take a single photo. Maybe next time! LOL
Highlights 1) Amazing Food 2) Cool Vibe 3) Shareable
Highlights 1) Amazing Food 2) Cool Vibe 3) Shareable Plates Made a reservation here recently for a small group of co-workers. It happened to be Valentine's Day so we definitely needed the reservation. We arrived about 30 minutes early but the restaurant was able to seat us right away at a high top. The vibe here is super cool and open. It's fairly loud but that made it feel exciting! The menu is fairly large and features a ton of Mediterranean small plates of various sizes. Everything we had was amazing and bursting with flavor! Highly recommend the harissa carrots, salmon and Greek potatoes. Will absolutely seek this out on my next visit!

This place is so good! Make a reservation in advance if you are going on a weekend. Was very impressed when I went here for the first time, I brought a large group and they handled it great! Definitely on the nicer side! A go to date spot!
Great food, great service and great location.
The food at this Mediterranean restaurant was unbelievable. Fresh and well prepared, I would rate the meal as one of the best meals I have ever had in Portland.
Okay let me just say, everything I had to eat here way
Okay let me just say, everything I had to eat here way delicioussss!! I really would recommend the lamb and usually I don't prefer lamb. They know what they're doing here when it comes to food, but also ambiance! This is such a cute place, we went at night and there was low lighting, modern decor, so makes a great spot to go with friends or family, but a great date spot as well! The service was great as well, knowledgeable on the whole menu, and attentive! One downside, is be ready to spend a bit of money. I would come back much more often if prices were a little lower, but for the quality of the food I'd still say it's worth it
One of my favorite spots in the pearl.
The octopus is my favorite but you can't go wrong with anything really. Try the lamb hummus if that's your thing - so good!! And the staff are always so nice.
Food was good though surprisingly bland.
Service was fine. The noise level, between the thumping music and the crowd, made it impossible to enjoy or linger over dinner.
Very average
We came to this restaurant with friends based on reviews. Pretentious and unimaginative pricey food. They couldn’t split the bill for some reason. There are other places with better ambiance and food in Portland.
Interesting Cuisine
A very popular spot in the Pearl District of Portland. They serve small plates to be shared, lots of yogurt dishes and of course Mediterranean style foods. We had a lot of them, but the one outstanding dish (for me) was the octopus, a long grilled tenacle brought on a platter! We also had the chicken meatballs, salt roasted beets, eggplant dip and other dishes. The most difficult part of visiting this restaurant is the parking in the Pearl. We found a lot a few blocks away and squeezed our car into one of their small sized but large priced spaces. Then walked in the rain to the restaurant. Oh, well that is the Pearl for you. But it was worth the effort.
Hands down one of the best restaurants around
I have spent a lot of time in kitchens over the last forty years. I have come to have high expectations in uppity things like texture, harmony amid contrasts, the element of surprise, the exotic amid the familiar, presentation, and quality of ingredients. Normally, my expectations are disappointed. We cook at home more often than we go out. From that background, I offer my unqualified praise to Chef Burgess and his staff. This place is a gem. Everything they put on the table illustrates their excellence as a team. Each dish has a truly unique character. Each delights with surprises that come from dedication to the craft and a certain genius, not chance. Each is sumptuous. Each offers the unexpected. You can taste the thoughtfulness, the imagination, the vision. What a joy to eat at a place like this. On top of that, the place is unpretentious and warm and the service is lovely. MEC reminds us of what a restaurant can be. Put it on your list of top restaurants in Portland. It is now on mine.
Can't wait to return!
Lovely setting...great service...Fabulous food for whole family...vegan, vegetarian, omnivores. Loved every bite of creative dishes!
