With all the expansion happening, I feel like the ramen is just getting worse. Vegan tantanmen doesn't have the same taste or creaminess as when they first made it. Look back on the tantanmen pictures from years ago when they used to serve it with gobo and edamame. Also, the ordering process reverted back to physical menus again. The QR codes they had up at every table previously were much more convenient. I think the miso lamb ramen might still be tasty, but after spending $20+ on a bowl of ramen, there are much better alternatives out there. Heck, I can make a tantanmen from scratch that tastes better than what's offered at Mensho nowadays. Shame about all the changes that have impacted their quality since the early years.

One of the best veggie ramens in the city! Came in on a Sunday evening, we showed up at 6:30 and beat most of the rush. We were seated in about 20 minutes. There are multiple veggie options on the menu, each with two spice options. I ordered the vegan tantanmen with regular spice. The broth, veggies, and textured protein were fantastic! The spice level was perfect for me too. Would definitely recommend Mensho for vegetarians and vegans! They clearly put a lot of care into crafting their meat-free selections.

The first time we came at regular dinner time, and we waited for almost an hour to be seated. The second time, we came on Thursday night early at night, like 5:30 pm, so luckily we didn't wait too long to be seated. Best unique ramen place in SF. Their broth are more on the rich and heavy side. We tried Duck matcha ramen, Chashu mazemen, and G.K.O... all of them are sooo good!
Be the first to ReplyThe ramen was amazing! The little wait was totally worth it.
Great service and good ambiance. Will definitely be going back next time I am in San Francisco.

TL;DR - Aggressive wait times, poor facilities, rushed experiences make this trendy ramen shop stacked against itself. While there is definitely some flavor to be found, this Paitan-focused location is easily outclassed by rival options. So after a cooling off period of about 7 years, I decided to come here again after I had gotten quite a bit more ramen under my belt. Unlike before, I had a chance to eat at a lot more ramen here and abroad, so I understood quite a bit more about the different ramen types. My previous review of 3/5 was pretty soured by the experience of the location itself, it's very poorly situated in a dense urban area with 0 parking, hill-ish walking, and no waiting area. They have folks form a line outside and it can get long, real quick. This is more a symptom of their success so I felt it unfair to judge them in that manner, so let's try this again... We got there at 4pm this time, so we got right in (thank god), because it was pouring rain outside, and super cold (48 degrees F). Last time we had gone here they had communal tables, but now the cramped space has COVID-style booth shields. Privacy is nice, kinda reminded me of Tokyo-style bullet train sushi restaurants but the chairs were super uncomfortable. Additionally, the bathroom was completely out of order, with no option next door or anywhere around. I can only imagine standing in line in the pouring rain to eat here, only to find out there is no restroom at all. Kinda crazy. I ordered tea, beer, the Tori Paitan, my wife got the A5 Wagyu Shoyu and a melon soda. Service was slightly laggy, but nothing egregious. I asked if they could shut the door because the draft was extreme. Wind was whipping inside and for whatever reason they said they needed to keep it open, which outside of a health code thing I see absolutely no reason they need this thing open. Food arrived, we feasted. My wife had said while the A5 was unseasoned, the broth was quite good. Be aware, their paitan ramen is of primary chicken broth, so the flavors can be quite different from more common tonkatsu broth. I had had plenty of paitan in Tokyo, my favorite being some of the yuzu-infused varieties. Their broth was unfortunately quite underwhelming, being heavy in a bad way with a strange seasoning that didn't get better as you ate it. Additionally, the chashu I received was stone cold, despite it being in the soup. The menma, incorrectly cooked and so it was gummy/chewy. The noodles were also a tad overdone but that might just be their style, which I tend to like firmer noodles (my wife enjoyed hers, as she likes more soft). The real end for it all though was the fact that due to the draft, both my tea and my soup were cold within minutes. I was overhearing our neighbors talk about it too. Unfortunately I strongly believe the constant attitude of "get them in, get them out" permeated the entire experience, and the environment is aggressively against making you comfortable. Don't get me wrong, the service had a smile and was quite friendly, but the way they run this spot needs a little work, it's lost it's way. My original review had expressed some hate for the lines, questioning why the hell someone would want this rather than travel a half a mile in any direction to find much better options. My opinion now is even worse, because I know for certain now the food is not as good as people say, and the facilites are worse than they've ever been. Bottom line, the place felt pretty cheap to be charging $25-$49/bowl. First time in awhile I recall a ramen spot not even offering a glass with a beer. All these small details add to an experience feeling more like fast food, sans the bill. If you are looking for paitan specifically, Marufuku in Japantown, or even Hinodeya (though the latter not my favorite) would be far better options, with more space, more respect for the customer, and far better food. Or... you can continue to stand outside for an hour for this. Smh SF...

Tasty ramen! Corn was ok, ramen was great, ambiance was great, and pricing standard. Thankfully the line and wait wasn't long for Thursday night. I'd return!
Be the first to ReplyOh my goodness this ramen spot is absolutely delicious.
We ordered the signature toripaitan ramen and everything about it was perfect. I love the thicker style ramen noodles and it was cooked perfectly, it had a great chewiness to it that I really enjoy with ramen noodles. The broth, egg, proteins, every component of it was delicious. I was extremely impressed with the ramen here and highly recommend it. I did wish the proteins were a bit thicker cut but over all the ramen was almost perfect in my book. I highly recommend coming 10-15 min before they open as there was already a queue on Thursday evening before they even opened. Food and service is quick though so that's a plus.

My partner doesn't eat pork or beef so the quest for ramen always takes extensive research. We love Mensho because they offer lamb and chicken options/broth. I got the signature Toripaitan and my date got lamb ramen. Everything is seasoned well and noodles were springy. Absolutely delicious! Fried enoki chips is a delicious addition!

Not very accessible from the Bart station, will require a long walk or public/rideshare service. Very crowded and small. I came in late hours, but regular hours would prob have a long line Had their Spicy Signature Toripaitan ramen, very filling. Toppings were a bit cold (maybe needed to warm up a bit?) Overall the ramen was good.
Be the first to ReplyWe visited this place with high expectations on a Sunday.
It was our first time there, and my partner and I were deliberating on what to order. He opted for the Classic Tori Paitan, while I was intrigued by the Tori Paitan with G.K.O. Both of us avoid pork, so when our server suggested the vegan ramen G.K.O, we decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the vegan ramen turned out to be disappointing. It lacked flavor entirely, which was quite disheartening. However, upon tasting the Tori Paitan, I found it delightful. When I requested a replacement for the vegan ramen, citing the server's recommendation, we were surprisingly denied. This was a first for us in this country; typically, restaurants are accommodating when a customer isn't satisfied with their order, especially if it falls short of expectations. It seems the restaurant's pride in their "Michelin guide" feature may have overshadowed their commitment to customer satisfaction. I can't recommend the vegan ramen--it's simply not worth the money.

Amazing experience and service staff was great. Was at another ramen shop after trying Mensho and that really doesn't match up at all.

Finally tried out this popular ramen spot! I got the chicken paitan ramen, which was pretty good. The flavor of the ramen was unique and very, very rich. The broth was super thick, which is not something I am used to. Unfortunately I don't like the thicker and really rich ramen broths as much, but this is just personal preference. I'd still recommend trying this place out as they have unique flavors like matcha ramen or wagyu ramen! If you're planning on going, definitely be prepared to wait a bit as the interior is small. There is usually a long line outside the restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyGood, but doesn't live up to the hype.
I came at 4:30 on a Wednesday and luckily there wasn't a line (only 1 party of 4 ahead of us). I think on a non-weekend/Friday, you could make do with arriving 10-15 minutes ahead and still be able to grab a seat when the restaurant opens. In fact, I believe there were still a few remaining open spots after everyone in line prior to the restaurant opening sat down.Truthfully I think there are other ramen spots in SF that are better than Mensho. Personally, the broth is just too rich and thick for my liking. My sister and I shared the Tori Paitan ramen and the Tsukemen. Both tasted pretty similar/the same, so if you want some variation and are sharing, I wouldn't recommend getting these two together since they are both chicken broth. The Tsukemen broth is a tad thicker, I presume because it has to be to coat the noodles well, but as I mentioned, both the ramens just didn't hit the way I wanted them to and was too oily/thick. Also, even though the Tsukemen photo has an egg in it, it doesn't come with one :( Probably won't be coming back given you have to either wait or come before opening to grab a spot and I personally don't think it's worth the long line/wait.
Be the first to ReplySoooooooooo creamy.
This was worth the wait in the rain. Next time i will order extra noodles and broth to go while I'm sitting there eating my bowl
Be the first to ReplyThe best ramen I have ever had in my life.
By far. There is a reason why people line up for this place... and why they kick you out after 60 minutes! Started with the enoki chips. Quite satisfying and with way less guilt than french fries. We also had the chicken karaage, which was perfectly cooked. By the way, each dinner has to order at least 1 bowl of ramen, so don't expect to just do apps + drinks. Okay - the ramen! I guess I had some kind of special because it came with Waygu beef slices and ground beef, and it had a rich broth that combined three broth flavors. It was insane. The broth was so richly flavorful. The hand-pulled noodles were soft and melted in my mouth. The waygu was like butter, and the ground beef was a nice addition. I can taste this bowl of ramen as I'm thinking about it. Atmosphere is tough to describe. The tables are still very covid separate with high dividers. The menu is on a QR code that lets you scan and pay as you go or separately, whatever works for your table. Parking is tough because the spots right in front don't allow parking from 4-6pm. There is a little garage just a couple doors down, which you (like me) could drive by if you're not in the area often. The only thing I found disappointing was the $4 cup of tea that wasn't even refillable. Hard pass for next time. Also, would have loved to sit for another 15 minutes, but they let us know when we were at 55 minutes that we needed to leave soon. So, let's say the customer service is not the friendliest.

Came on a Saturday at around 6pm and waited in line for about an hour before our party of 4 got seated. Small restaurant with mostly parties of 2, a few parties of 4, and 1 party of 5 that evening. My husband pointed out that all of their broth was chicken-based. My kids and I each ordered tori paitan ramen. (I would've had my kids share, but there was a sign out front that said everyone needed to order at least 1 bowl.) My kids were huge fans and said, "It was worth the wait." The broth was creamy and flavorful, and the noodles were perfectly chewy. Didn't love the toppings though. Fried burdock root was interesting and added a crunchy texture at first, but after soaking in the broth, was soggy and not as delicious. Don't mind kale, but didn't love it in my ramen and picked most of it out.My husband had their Wagyu tantanmen, which he seemed the enjoy. I had a piece of Wagyu, and it just melted in my mouth.Enoki chips appetizer was good as well. More for texture than for taste, since you could mostly only taste the fried batter. Crispy on the outside and slightly chewy on the inside.

The vegan garlic knockout was decent, I couldn't finish it and the leftovers tasted even better reheated. Does this justify the long line outside though? I'm not convinced. It is also small and has limited seating is probably why. They cap your time at around 60 mins and will enforce it. I would be open to come again if the wait isn't so long.

Tori Paitan Ramen (7/10): This ramen was unique but not spectacular for its price point.Enoki Mushroom Chips (7.5/10): These chips were well seasoned and crispy, but started to taste oily after a while. This restaurant is well themed and decorated, and isn't too loud for discussions.Service was fast, we were seated immediately on a weekday night and could order through our phones.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious broth, generous portions.
The chashu was very nicely done. Didn't love the burdock and kale, it added too much texture and not enough flavor. We got there right at 5 and were able to be seated immediately. Service was very fast. Turnover is pretty quick, probably 30-40 minutes a table. Small space, with dividers between tables. Not really a date night ambiance, but def go there for the food.
Be the first to ReplyI first started coming here when it opened back in 2016.
I keep returning whenever I'm in town, because it's truly the best ramen I've ever had. The restaurant itself is small, and holds fewer than 30 customers. As a result, there is oftentimes a wait to get inside, with a line stretching halfway down the block. Depending on the time and day, you might end up waiting for an hour (or maybe even longer). The best way to reduce your wait time is to arrive maybe 15-20 minutes before opening to wait outside. Even then, you are likely to see a line of customers. This place lives up to the hype simply because the food quality is superb. The quality has also remained consistent throughout the years. I like to order the Tantanmen (vegetarian) with an egg and extra noodles. Portion sizes are generous. The toppings and flavors all complement each other as well.If you like ramen, then I recommend trying this place!
Be the first to ReplyReally good food.
We got the fried enoki mushrooms and corn chips. We enjoyed both and I loved the corn! We also go the A5 wagyu and truffle mazesoba and chasu ramen. The mazesoba was delicious, although a bit salty and garlicky for my taste. I wasn't a fan of the ramen broth but my wife enjoyed it! The noodles in both dishes were cooked to perfection. Get there early because this place is popular...also no to-go containers, so come hungry!

Uh-mazing! I normally don't like to wait in line but this was worth it. My friend had the creamy chicken broth one and I had the garlic one. Both yum. Luckily, we went right after work on a Sunday and we didn't wait for more than 20min.
Be the first to ReplyVery fast line and service.
a bit cramped inside but people are in and out. the tori patan ramen had a creamy consistency with chewy noodles. Overall very worth it. You should eat here
Be the first to ReplyThe food is good, and the service is excellent.
The lines are atrociously long but I guess that's when you know something is pretty good.

As one of the most popular ramen joints in the city, I've been lucky both times I've gone to get in the small space in the first seatings. The resto is very small - maybe 30 seats inside and not a ton of elbow room. It's very efficient of an operation and service is good. You'll order from your table with a QR code on the table. The food itself is amazing. This is the best ramen I've had and it's not something I seek out often! The broth is a thicker, more unctuous kind where it's silky and uber flavorful. I got the wagyu one this time and I'm not sure if it's for everyone. Thought it says it was spicy, I didn't really find it spicy at all. I love the tofu as it's silky and soft. The noodles have great bounce and broth is flavorful. I tried the matcha and it was exactly as described - very matcha forward but creamy and savory. The kale in it was a great pairing. My bf's mom LOVED her mentaiko ramen. She said she's looking forward to going back to Japan to try Mensho Inc.'s other stores! The tsukemen looked really good with the Karaage on top. Make sure to come early to try for first seating. Store opens at 5. Both times I've come around 4:40 and we were the last table seated each time
