Great neighborhood restaurant
Loved the bright, cozy atmosphere, the food and the service. Don't forget to save room for the Basque cake for dessert.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely a place I will go back to
This is a small restaurant, seats maybe 30 people, so the staff are attentive, friendly, and know the menu. We had lamb, beats, conscious, meatballs, and a couple of other dishes, across the menu and did not have a bad dish. If you like $8 tapas this is not the place for you. If you like good, creative, small plate dishes and are willing to try new things, this is a great location gem. Only reason I did not give it a 5 was the wine menu only had one wine above a 3.8 on Vino app to order.
Be the first to ReplySad overrated Tapas
Tried several dishes. Overall impression is good. But, at around $14+ per small plate, it’s just not worth it. Mostly a reinterpretation of tapas that come for nearly free at many bars in Spain and Portugal. That aside, as tapas go, it just does not live up to the reviews. Service was good. Patatas braves and croquettes were mush. And 3 mussels on a crostini with a bland goat cheese was a serious gouge at $14.

Small restaurant with good seafood options. Recommend reservations and parking may be an issue. Spanish Basque oriented food. Caipirinhas and white wine with dinner. The Tapas de Jamon was a great spreadable and shareable starter. The pea salad was excellent. I tried the prawn heads and was wary because of a past Chinatown experience but these were fine. Share the Seafood Fideos also excellent. We came early but restaurant filled up quickly and noise level was fine. Only why didn't rate 5 star as the restaurant does not do any special orders or changes to dishes. Looking forward to returning and trying more offerings from this great little restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent!... a little expensive.
This restaurant is a great place if you are looking for nice dishes well prepared with creativity and great flavors.
Inspired by the french/Spanish Basque cuisine, the portions are not big but delicious. Only few tables available, atmosphere very cosy. Price a little high but it worth the try.
Cozy and Delicious
My wife and I enjoyed a "date night" at mfk recently.....the restaurant is very small and down some steps in an older building. nicely done in informal white chairs and seating for up to 13 at the bar. Smart wait-staff and bartenders helped make the evening lovely. We started our meal with Gambas al Ajillo, a delicious, very garlicky starter that held 6 medium-shrimp in a lemony bechamel-type sauce...we then moved on to the smoked trout accompanied by Publican toast, a little salty, but then we like it that way! Both dishes, huge hits for our taste buds! We then moved on to Chipirones (squid) with Chorizo, also good, but a little expensive at $24. We finished with ¡Albondigas! Pork & Veal Meatballs...perhaps the weakest dish of the night, till dessert, but perfectly good. Dessert is limited to one possibility, that sounded great, Basque Cake....sadly no pastry cream was found in this cake, and it was hard and dry....perhaps leftover from the previous week? The wine list is mall but fine for this Spanish-influenced restaurant....interstingly it contains possibilities from Italy and France instead of focusing on Basque country or Galicia. Our bill with tip/tax,came to $165 for 4 courses +dessert, and 3 glasses of wine. Not inexpensive, but not unreasonable in Chicago.
All in all a lovely night out, with minor issues towards the end.
Chef not responsive to allergies
My friend with lactose intolerance allergy and I tried to find dishes to eat here. The waiter made one suggestion for vegetable substitution on an entree; the chef refused. We were left with no entree choices and few small plates and appetizers to choose from. We enjoyed the wine and the limited choices...beet salad was sour, probably needed the cheese to modify. Bread is ordered at $2/person, except for one small plate that comes with bread (not shown on menu), so we had more than enough! It was toasted, so be prepared for black spots! Nearly everything on this menu has butter and cheese....

Guy from triple D was right they are doing Spanish cuisine right. This hybrid Paella pasta dish has amazing flavor and took us back to the Spain in one bite. A must get!
Seafood Fideos, toasted capellini, piperade, saffron
The Best
The food, service, and atmosphere are great. When in Chicago, this is a must visit. You will not be disappointed. Crispy Prawn Heads and Boquerones will be two of the best things you will ever eat.
Be the first to ReplyWow!
Reservations are a must because this space is small. I thoroughly enjoyed dining at mfk. last night. The service is prompt and provided a comfortable pace without feeling rushed or forgotten. Everything from the butter to the sardines to the scallops to the amazing tortilla espanola to the basque cake was delicious. The cocktails were tasty and unusual and Ben's wine recommendation was the perfect pairing. Can't wait to go back!
