Great outdoor BBQ venue in Austin!
Great BBQ in an outdoor picnic style venue in Austin. The beef rib, brisket, pork ribs & jalapeño sausage were all prepared well & tasted delicious. The potato salad, coleslaw & beet salad were also tasty & delicious. The staff were very friendly & helpful with the menu items. Would recommend & return again!

Walked over to Mickelthwait for a late lunch around 2:30PM. A few tables in use, good music piped in, walked right up and ordered brisket, sausage, and smoked turkey. Transaction was quick and easy, they give you a buzzer, food was ready in 5-10 minutes. Turkey was quite good. Sausage was good. Brisket was DRY. Luckily there is extra sauce available on the tables which helped get this finished, but it was quite disappointing. Not sure if the meat sits in a warmer in off hours, but this just wasn’t at all special. We are also used to more interaction with staff at Q joints, as they are generally interesting and interested people, and this was very Matter of Fact.

Great spot for the meats! Friendly staff inside and out! Wife and I had the 3 meat plate and will be back next Austin trip! Pork shoulder was killer and brisket was tender and juicy. I real dig the potato salad. Price was very reasonable.
Be the first to ReplyAMAZING BBQ and Beers!!
This was some of the best barbecue we have ever had. We went on a Thursday afternoon (great time to go with a nice atmosphere but no lines). Collected ice cold beers inside the building where you can also dine in the A/C. Great selection of local beers and a nice guy behind the bar who was chatty. Sat outside and ordered the 3 meat and 2 meat plates (so we could try all the meats!). WOW it was all delicious and fresh, the brisket was just the right mix of fatty and lean, the pork ribs were so soft and fall off the bone, the turkey was the juiciest I have ever had!!! Sides were awesome too, especially the Mac and cheese! The lady who served us in the truck was really friendly too. Only bad thing is we live in the UK so cannot come back for a while!!!

Micklethwaite Craft Meats was seriously delish! No lines, smiles all around, and the food was on point. The chill vibes create a total Texas BBQ scene that'll keep you coming back. Don't snooze on this awesome BBQ joint in Austin, you absolutely gotta give it a go!

We had wanted to go to the “other” downtown popular bbq place for lunch, but the line was a block long, we went here instead. Everything we had was JUST AWESOME! It’s some of the best bbq restaurant food I’ve ever had. Their sides are all terrific, and their variety of grilled meats is varied, sometimes eclectic, and delicious. I wish I lived closer. My entire family loved it. We will go again if we get back to Austin. Their outdoor dining area is cute (but yes, it is outdoors). People were eating in the mist, but they didn’t care because it was that good.

This was some of the best barbecue I ever had. We got the three meat platter with two sides. The pork rib was phenomenal. Very tender. The brisket is by far the best I've ever had. So tender it just falls apart when you try to pick it up. We also got sausage which had good flavor, but it was a little chewy. Most barbecue places have some generic yellow mac and cheese. They do theirs with white cheese and they put something else in it, it has really great flavor. And definitely ask for pickles, they taste homemade.

Came upon this by accident. Came here for the beer garden and found a BBQ spot. While waiting in a line of about 20 people when they opened I asked the guys behind me what was good. Beef rib both said with no hesitation. They followed up with a lot more but again said if you had a last meal it has to be the beef rib. They also said this was their favorite bbq in Austin and they had all the bigger names (Franklins). We didnt hit a bunch of bbq after this spot but it was flat out awesome. We got the beef rib and then a 3 meat plate that included pulled lamb, jalapeño sausage, and brisket. All were awesome. Briskit and beef rib were the showstoppers though. For sides we had the mac n cheese and it was also amazing as well as jalapeño grits which was also great but Im not a huge grits person. Finished it off with banana pudding. Glad we tripped over this place and I will definitely tell anyone i know to go here.

Had lunch and ordered the brisket sandwich with sides. This food truck serves the best brisket we have tried in Austin. Nothing fancy; ate at picnic table outside, but the quality of the brisket exceeded the very casual atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Visiting the area for work meant I had to find some good Texas Cue while I was in town. Every website I searched for good Barbecue in Austin had this place on their list so I figured I should give a try.
I ordered the three meat plate with Brisket, Tex-Czech Sausage and pulled pork. The pulled pork had an amazing flavor and was a great start.
The sausage had a snap to it and a great level of spice.
The Brisket had the perfect amount of smoke flavor, was amazingly tender and moist, and the bark was the best I have ever had.
None of what I ordered needed sauce but the one available on the table added a nice touch of sweetness, it went better with the pulled pork but was good on the brisket too.
I chose the grits and chili beans for sides, both of which are good enough to stand on their own for a meal.
The best part was driving by another well known BBQ place and seeing the massive line out the door on my way here.
From the time I parked to the time I was eating may have been 15 minutes.
I am sure the cold wet weather helped me out but I will take the win.
An amazing meal that I will recommend to anyone I know that will be in the area.
Best BBQ so far.........
This was the first of our three BBQ stops. I’d say their meats were the best, but their sides can do a little better. We only had two of the many side options and although they were good, they were not as good as a few of the other places we had been to. But really, who really cares about the sides? It’s all about the meat!
The line was long when we arrived around noon, and it moves kinda on the slow side. There was just one person taking orders and I would suggest moving the menu (or have a second one) closer to the middle of the line. That MIGHT make the line move faster but who knows. PLENTY of outdoor seating. There was free beer, at least on the day we visited.
Food was good and not overpriced like some places we had been to. I’m lucky that the hubby has some game in the grilling/smoking dept., so these bbq stops were not out of this world but if I had to pick, I’d say this was the best bbq I’ve had so far in Austin.
Really tasty - it's a food trailer
Read fabulous reviews so had to stop by during our April 2021 visit to Austin. Easy to find, cute area and plenty of parking. Reminded me of a Portland feel - food trailer with picnic tables but farm to table type food. Super nice staff, even though we got there end of day when they were preparing to close up. Since it was end of the day it wasn't crowded and we took what was left - turkey, sausage, a few ribs, baked beans & chips. All were good, but the ribs were especially awesome. My son was LOVING the ribs! Special shout out....We have food allergies - soy and gluten and were able to have all the meats and many of the sides, just not the sauce (soy), which was fine since we typically like our bbq without sauce anyway. Emailed before our trip to verify what we could eat and the staff was so responsive and helpful. Would definitely recommend to others and would return if ever in the area again.

After getting in line for Franklin Barbecue at 9 am, waiting a while and then hearing that we might be in line for 5 hours but not get to eat because of where we were we decided that no barbecue could be worth that wait. We got to Micklethewait shortly before they opened, had no line and got delicious food with a lot less angst. My husband had the beef short rib which looked like something Fred Flintstone would eat but it tasted like barbecued roast beef. Yum. I ordered a two meat plate. The pork rib was moist. Unfortunately the brisket was dry except on the edge where there was fat and there it was delicious. We also liked the jalapeño cheese grits and potato salad. I saw others eating macaroni cheese but hadn’t seen it on the menu. Definitely worth a visit. There was a line when we left but it was moving. We saw several people we had seen Franklin who had the same idea.

The BBQ meat was really good! I liked the beef ribs and brisket a lot! They were tasty!! I think I ordered the wrong sides. I wasn’t the biggest fan of my sides.

I had lunch here last weekend, I have heard great things about Mickelthwait and wanted to finally give it a try as I was in the neighborhood. They don't have a ton of parking (especially on a weekend), but I was able to find surface parking a couple blocks over at about 11:15 a.m. The surrounding area is quite pleasant, lots of non-chain shops and restaurants, so it was a pleasant stroll over.
There were about 30 people ahead of me in line, but the line moved steadily and fairly quickly so it took about 45 minutes for me to get up to order. After I ordered it only took about 10-12 minutes for my food to come out.
I got a beef rib (delicious), a 1/4 link of sausage (also delicious) and a brisket sandwich (quite good, very moist). They have their own sauce on the tables, I thought it added a nice bit of flavor to both the sausage and the brisket.
The person who took my order was very personable and made nice conversation with me as I decided on what to order, prices were not cheap but very fair for what you pay for BBQ these days in Austin.
It's a food trailer, with plentiful seating (2 areas, one covered) and it's dog-friendly and they have free beer (donations welcome) so that's a plus too as you wait for and as you consume your BBQ.
Highly recommend, for the both for the food and the experience.
It really is that good!
Perfect Texas weather to enjoy a great meal outside. Brisket with fresh baked bread is tender and flavorful. Pulled lamb is moist and tender. The real stars are the sausage and sides: roasted beets and smoked mac and cheese are inventive and tasty. The outdoor setting is delightful and the folks who work here are exceedingly nice.
Be the first to ReplyGet there early!
This place is off the beaten path and has the biggest smoker I’ve ever seen. They have a great selection of meats and sides but get there early for lunch - they can run out of different selections. The brisket is out of this world and the potato salad was really good. Some of my friends had the Frito Brisket Pie and loved it!
They serve everything out of a trailer and you eat outside in a covered area on picnic tables. It’s a pretty cool spot!

Be the first to ReplyGood BBQ, great sides
There are lots of good BBQ restaurants in Austin, but a number serve sides that are rather pedestrian. The Micklethwait truck offer very good BBQ meats and tasty sides. It's a "stand in line" and eat outside place, so not for those in a hurry. In addition, they barbecue for the day, so some meats sell out before others. If you plan to order the two-meat platter, its a good idea to have plans A and B in case one of your preferred meats sells out. If you have a strong preference, arrive early. That said, once you get your food, there is no rush. Enjoy!
