An over the top restaurant that is a cross between Ralph Lauren’s Polo Club Restaurant in NY bordering on the decadent. Our table was adjacent to the white baby grand piano with a good view of the champagne table, glassware, adjacent dining room (for a larger group) and of course some of the eclectic diners. The music was retro - very 60’s and early 70’s but the playlist was so short it became redundant when the same songs kept playing again and again. Frankly the loud music did not compliment the restaurant and would be better suited at a bar for older adults.
I might have given a higher rating but our waiter was so unprofessional and disgruntled. He shoved old styled, wide mouth glasses (pre-flutes) in front of us without asking if we’d like an alcoholic beverage and without identifying what he was serving.
A younger (second) waiter brought lovely starters with a small loaf of sour dough bread and pleasantly explained the ingredients while exuding charm and attention.
The first waiter returned with menus and told us to use flashlights if we couldn’t see. He was brusque and could care less about guiding us through the specialties or our dining experience. After placing our order he roughly grabbed the flashlights (which he pocketed) demanding what are you drinking from the champagne and wine list. We advised him we still needed to review it and he glared back like he had something better to do.
The appetizers were heavy especially the scallops in risotto. Entrees were prepared well but the sauces drowned out the taste of two of the main courses (beef trio & veal trio) for which food was left on the plate. The red wine we ordered was so heavy and musty we couldn’t finish the bottle between the three of us (I couldn’t even finish a glass) which was a shame especially at the price. Waiter 1 returned and never commented on the left over food and wine. Those flashlights were gruffly returned to the table with the dessert menu. We ordered desserts but were underwhelmed perhaps by server #1’s heavy handedness at grabbing the flashlights to his pocket that it was sadly laughable (like a cat and mouse game). The chef and manager stopped by but at this point what do you say ... you already know you won’t return.
At these prices a self serving waiter just adds insult to a fine dining experience which is problematic as this is a highly regarded and recommended restaurant. Especially at the very end of the meal when waiter #1 presented the bill and is smiling like a Cheshire Cat expecting a big tip. We gave him the standard tip, however, had his service been exemplary he could have counted on more generosity. It works both ways ... we don’t have to return but he does. I suggest management ensure all waiters are putting their best foot forward especially if they would like both return customers and recommendation to others.
Before leaving muffins with sweet notes ‘Hope it was as good for you as it was for me.’ were presented by the 2nd waiter which was a lovely touch and ensured we had something for breakfast or a snack for later.
Ironically this restaurant was recommended to us by an advisor at a very profitable hedge fund who said we won’t be disappointed ... as he likes to impress investors. We will suggest that he reconsider this option and offer other dining choices in the future.
It feels like there’s a shortsightedness when restaurants ride on their ‘reputations’ and management doesn’t see the cracks.
Our reservation was on December 27th. It could have been so memorable and so much better. We could have become repeat diners (as were here for 3 months) but these type of hiccups are not acceptable and don’t warrant our return.
