My critical review is based mostly on Monterey Fish House's way of presenting its menu, which seems challenging at best and scammy at worst. We (my wife and I) I thought it was odd that the waiter listed off six or seven dishes on the "specials" list. ( I had to get him to repeat it again and I saw another male customer roll his eyes as the waiter was running through the long list). We ended up ordering two of the dishes, an artichoke seafood dish (a mix of shrimp, mussels in a white sauce) and a crab ravioli in a red sauce and crab cake dish. This was lunch and the typical entrees like this on the menu were around $30. The waiter never mentioned prices, so we were shocked when we got the bill, for $40 apiece. Total bill, including taxes, tips (2 coffees), was way over $100. No alcoholic drinks of dessert. For LUNCH. First they should cut down the list of "specials." If not, at least print out a little insert, with prices, and add with the menu so customers can see what they're ordering. This way, It feels like they're hiding the prices. The quality of the food was mixed: my wife's artichoke dish was delicious. I wasn't as crazy about my crab ravioli. For $40 I expected something a bit more unique. The setting was nice and cozy but there's no ocean or any kind of view- just a highway. The service was excellent so I left a good tip but we both left with a, uh, bad taste in our mouths. Monterey Fish House should be more transparent if they're going to charge top prices like this and expect customers to return.

Monterey's Fish House is a cozy, bustling local seafood spot. My party of eight waited for 40 minutes on a Saturday evening which is not bad, considering we were told the wait would be an hour. Our server was friendly and efficient. The highlight of the meal was the oak grilled oysters! They were absolutely incredible-smoky, large, juicy, and honestly the reason why I'm giving this review 4 stars. I enjoyed my Sicilian Holiday pasta, which had lots of seafood, and I always like to save the complimentary sesame bread and dip it in the broth! As for the things I wasn't so keen on, the fettuccine pasta was quite thick. It also seemed like clam pastas sat on the pass for some time while the other dishes were being finished. All three clam pastas were all a bit cold by the time all the entrees arrived, whereas my Sicilian pasta was piping hot. So, the timing could've been better. The clam pasta could also use more flavor besides butter and garlic. Overall, the grilled oysters and Sicilian Holiday pasta were tasty, but I've had better seafood out there in general, especially given the price.
Be the first to ReplyI wanted so much to love Monterey Fish House but alas.
.. Came here for lunch and we were seated immediately. Food: Appetizers: * Fried calamari: 3/5 didn"t taste fresh. previously frozen and fried .. * clam chowder: 2/5 didn't taste fresh. * Ahi tuna soecial: 3/5 Me and my Nana both ordered the ahi-tuna specials The tuna was a bit overcooked. Came with vegetables and pasta. The vegetables were soggy carrots, zucchini and broccoli... Service: 5/5 Service was top notch. All of the waiters were helpful and attentive. always made sure my soda was refilled. And hot fresh bread always refilled. Overall, I would not return. The service was wonderful but the food was lackluster....

My wife took me out to dinner on my 72 birthday in Monterey, CA. We had viewed Guy Fieri's, a fellow Santa Rosa CA residents, review of the Restaurant on Dinners, drive ins and dives, Triple D's as Guy would say. I grew up in San Mateo CA and my Uncle was a fisherman out of the wharf in San Francisco, so good fresh sea food is part of the fabric of my life. That being said we were pleasantly surprised by the excellent food and service at the Monterey's Fish House. Mathew a 28 year fixture at the bar where we chose to sit not only entertained us but guided us through the menu with care, as he shucked oysters and served drinks to other customers. I started with the BBQ Baby Octopus Hmmmmmm, delicious! My wife ordered 1/2 dozen oysters in the half shell. again Delicious! Then came our entre I had the Sicilian Seafood Paste, best seafood combination I have ever eaten. Fresh pasta made daily, Octopus, Mussels, Clams, Rock fish, Salmon, and Shrimp I asked for a lemon butter wine sauce with just the correct amount of garlic, my Genovese Grandfather was smiling at the choice. My bride chose the Filet of Sole Piccata, again delicious! Both portions were not weight watchers portions, quite literally the portions were twice the size that you would find at a normal seafood restaurant and half the price. If you are hungry and love seafood this is the place in Northern California, specifically Monterey go there. Tell Mathew, Sheri and Geri sent you!

I make a reservation here at Monterey's fish house for 3 people and went we arrived the reservation was not there, the hostess said that they did not have any reservation for us, and we made it a day before ... would like to know seriously this place takes its customers reservations??..... I see other customers complained about the some thing... RESERVATIONS.

Normally, I'm a big fan of this place, but tonight was a huge letdown. The food, usually spot on, arrived lukewarm and chewy. To top it off, my daughter's meal showed up 20 minutes after ours, blazing hot and completely wrong (seriously, how do you mess up a cheeseburger with ketchup only?). Service was practically nonexistent; I had to flag someone down just to get the check, which then took another 15 minutes to get my card back. And don't even get me started on our to-go dessert, which melted while we waited for the check. Hopefully, it was just an off night, it was a major disappointment, so we won't be returning. The only saving grace tonight was the staff refilling water and bread, if I could tip them directly I would, our waiter avoided his tables like the plague. Moreover, despite having a reservation and requesting a more kid-friendly table, we were told to seat ourselves, so I'm not really sure what the hostess does.
Be the first to ReplyFirst time here and this place is awesome.
It's a small place but it was packed with people waiting. The food is outstanding and fresh. We got the soup of day which shrimp bisque that is excellent. We got the clam chowder with homemade pasta and the chippino. Definitely worth the 5 star rating. Fast service after ordered and definitely worth the wait. Would come here again next time we are in Monterey.

What a find after a long day flying from Detroit, driving from Fresno and then to find out this was a stop on Guy Fieri #DDD. Food was superb as was the service. Our waiter started rattling off specials as we said we were unsure of what to get from so many great looking menu options and he said no need for the menu when you hear the specials. So true. The Swordfish medallions cooked to perfection and bathed in a decadent sauce with vegetables that may have been picked locally were also cooked with the right care. Also at the table my coworker went with the crab ravioli and crab cake off the menu special and again couldn't go wrong with this. Tender chunks of crab in both and pasta that may have been made in Italy to complement the dishes. Great food, people, and especially pricing for this Monterey hidden gem.

Great food and a fair price points. Enjoyed the environment. Waiters were very sweet. Hope to come back again sooner than later.

We had reservations for 10 people. I asked if the tables that just emptied out were for us. She said they had other reservations and we could wait or just leave. We left. Was not going to spend over $500 plus tip to be treated so rudely by a 20 year old and a manager who did not seem to care.

We came here for dinner and it was a good seafood restaurant. The inside is small and it get very busy at night. We started with the crab cake and it was awesome. Then one person had the sole and the other person had Ahi tuna. Both fish were excellent. Our server was excellent and very friendly. Overall, this is a great old school seafood restaurant. The prices are very reasonable and that is nice for Monterey.

Crab ravioli was amazing as well as blackened sea bass but the grilled sole was so bland. Great ambiance and service.
Be the first to ReplyService was impeccable.
Aaron is a rock star. The sheer number of specials is a sight to behold..or hear I should say. You can pretty much order whatever fresh seafood they have the way you want it. I chose the blackened sea bass and it was absolutely delicious. Just a slight hint of heat and cooked perfectly. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a wonderful, fresh seafood fix.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced underwhelming food.
In addition, the clam chowder was the worst I have ever had. Absolutely no clams, no clam flavor whatsoever. You'd be much better off going to Safeway and getting their clam chowder from the deli.
Be the first to ReplyI started eating at this restaurant in the 1970's when good
I started eating at this restaurant in the 1970's when good seafood restaurants were extremely rare. Over the past 10 years the quality of the food and the service has gone down so much that we go anywhere else. It is not even a good dining atmosphere with the music loud so as to please their heavy drinkers at the bar and to make dinner conversation with family and friends very difficult.

Loved Monterey Fish House, We haven't been here in awhile but this time around was definitely not a great one. Ordered cioppino and it was all soup(3 prawns/bits of fish/small mussels and clams) not worth the price. Wife ordered the chicken marsala suppose to be half a boneless chicken. But received a small drum and tons of chicken skin. Not sure what happen but very disappointed
Be the first to ReplyDelicious seafood.
Old school atmosphere with food to match. BBQ oysters, seared ahi tuna, bbq baby octopus. Mud pie and more for desert. Really great.

Crowded as expected which is why I made reservations but upon checking in, my name was out in the list like everyone else including ones who didn't have reservations from what I experienced. Waited 30 mins for a table. I don't think they have one but tell you you've got one to give you a false sense of priority. Ordered the Cioppino with the garlic bread was barely toasted. Cheese was barely melted and looked pale. Broth is in the watery side and wasn't really tasty like ones that are a bit thinner. Soto Mare in SFO for example is better for comparison. Service was good and didn't rush you out but I'm sure it was to encourage one to leave as soon as possible.

Long wait, but the oysters were fresh and the service was fantastic. Our waiter was swamped at the bar but he still made time for every person there. My friends and I had a great time there. Definitely not a place to go back often due to the price but I'd highly recommend taking guests and other special people there to try it out.

Our waiter would be the reason o come back. He was knowledgeable, helpful and funnyFist step - Shrimp bisque. Luscious and velvety texture. Absolutely delicious. Second - ahi tuna on the oak grill. This one wasn't as nice as i was expecting. Didn't perceive the oak smoke flavor. Also was looking for a nicer sear. I would love to try it blackened next time.
