I've stopped in here four or five times over the years, more often than not, unexpectedly. I went the other day with a Caesar salad and burrata on my mind. The Caesar was big and flavorful, the burrata was generously surrounded by prosciutto. The waiter brought me fresh bread to enjoy with my burrata. I had a couple aperol spritz as well, which were nothing special, but did the job. Where Monte's excels is with service. Some may think the whole waiters in vests and ties thing is dated, but to me it's reminiscent of old New York, which is what Monte's delivers. I sit outside post covid because I like to bring my dog, but their dining room downstairs is very Italian. Loud, bustling, dark wood, with pictures on the walls that all tell as story. Last time I was there by myself, the chef pulled the chair out across from me, asked how my meal was, and started chatting about my dog. Another man interrupted, holding fresh zucchini flowers in his hands, speaking Italian. The chef got up, and told me he'd send one to my table. About 25-30 minutes later a delicious ricotta stuffed zucchini flower in delicious red sauce came to my table, gratis. Monte's is old New York. It's a perfect red sauce joint, very reasonably priced and helmed by a chef who puts lots of love into the place. This place is as great for dining alone, as it is for loud boisterous groups. They only have one bathroom downstairs, which can be tricky because it's a sizable place. However, there's a 2nd bathroom in the upstairs dining room, provided it isn't closed for a special event. Here's hoping Monte's is open for another 100 years.
