Excellent meal as befits the hotel, expensive but excellent service
I'm leery of fine dining restaurants in hotels. One never knows if they are going to be as good as stand alone examples and so my expectations were somewhat reduced prior to this meal. It is therefore possible this rating is a tad high because we had a great meal here. In contrast to some other reviews (and I think perfunctory reviews from a reviewer with but a single review to their name can be summarily dismissed) the staff here were very friendly and helpful in accommodating an extra guest and also allowing us to change the time to an hour later, even though the restaurant wasn't terribly busy. We did have to request our table be moved to the window which is worth it for a better review. Insistence on this may be necessary if you want such a view! Although ostensibly a seafood restaurant our party of three all ordered turf rather than surf. I am partial to gourmet burgers and I chose the wagu beef version here. I like choosing such dishes to see what an accomplished chef can do with such a seemingly mundane item. It's a bit of a risk. I've been disappointed before but not this time. This burger was excellent indeed - perfectly cooked and with a myriad flavors conjured from the meat and the accompanying layers of the burger. My dining partners chose rack of lamb and short rib and both were professed to be similarly excellent. The dishes are generous in size too which somewhat offsets the steep price tag. However, this is the Ritz-Carlton after all. Excellent wine list with a good selection by the glass, as well as a fine selection of cocktails, of which the Cosmo and the Old Fashioned drew high praise from our table. I like to see affordable wine options on a menu even at fine dining establishments. It's all very well to see 4 figure prices on bottles but really, who orders them? You will pay for this level of service and food. Our bill came to around $100 a head but that did include wine and cocktails which usually inflate the price hugely. The service was efficient and friendly and helpful and the portions were plenty large enough so one didn't feel short changed at all. Obviously one doesn't come to such an establishment expecting to pay $20 a head, or at least one shouldn't. COVID has been horrendous for restaurants but Novia seems to have weathered the storm. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here, I am sure you will too.
Be the first to ReplyFood is quite good
Came here for breakfast and the food is very good. My crab Benedict was perfectly prepared and delicious. The $42 price is overwhelming, but then so is the $1000 per night room. The money is not the issue, it's the value, very questionable. I guess that applies to all luxury goods. Great attentive service.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed at 6-course dinner but liked the brunch
We had mixed feeling for this restaurant. On Friday evening we went for the โsignatureโ 6-course dinner. It was almost $200 per person. The service was quite good but the quality of the food was average. Two of the six courses were desert, and the amount of the other 4 course was small, so all of us including ladies were still hungry after that dinner. We also made reservation for Saturday brunch so the next morning we went back for that. This time it lived up to its reputation for being the best brunch in the area. Most of the dishes were very delicious, The only one we were disappointed with was the oyster, they did not taste fresh. But other dishes especially the beef slider, lamb rack and scallop were very good. Still have something that we hope they could improve: for almost $200 a person for the brunch, the restaurant charged us for regular coffee and tea. That is a bit weird in my opinion. JS
Be the first to ReplyThe worst meal I ever had - Christmas Dinner
I do not have words to express how bad dinner was. The food was cheap, very bad prepared and a joke. I will never try this restaurant again.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointed with bad experience from the start!
The first impression is everything so this review is about the hostess as I felt they had ruined our appetite. I give the restaurant 3 stars for their food but want to write the review about our experience from the start. We stayed at the Ritz and wanted to have a special dinner for my wife's birthday. We invited 2 of our friends from San Jose to join us and asked them to come early before our reservation at 8:15pm. We went to checkin with the hostess at 7:30pm and let them know everyone are here. They told us to wait until 8pm before they can seat us that I understand as we were early. There was no waiting area at the restaurant so they asked to go outside and wait in the hotel lobby. I didn't expect this at fine dining restaurant without a welcoming seating area for guests. We came back to check with hostess at 8:05pm and they asked us to wait for 5 more minutes for the table to be ready. We decided to stand around at the corner of the front entrance since we didn't want to go back to the lobby. I noticed there were couple of empty tables especially the one at the front that we got seated later on. My wife felt tired from waiting and asked me to check with them the third time at 8:13pm (I have made her happy). They told me that I still have 2 minutes before the reservation so the table is not ready. I asked them how could they know that the table will be ready in 2 minutes but not a minute earlier. To my surprise, they came to us at exactly 8:15pm and led us into the front table which has been empty since 8:05pm. I believe they didn't have service staff to allow us into the restaurant early. However, they should have a proper welcome area to allow the guest to relax with complementary drinks or something. I feel the fine dining experience should start from the time the guest arrive at the restaurant but not at the reservation time. The experience at the start had definitely ruined our overall dining experience. I don't recommend it unless you can come at the exact reservation time.
Be the first to ReplyGood not Exceptional
For this price and priced fix menu I always expect the food to be more than good. I would expect the chef to create something exceptional. I can get good at a third the cost. So I was a little disappointed. Beautiful restaurant with good service. Wine paring was ok would order a bottle next time, great wine list. I would expect the three course menu was a better choice
Be the first to ReplyExpensive 2 hour Brunch experience not quite worth the price
Due to COVID the brunch is in a small outside area at the front of the hotel. So no view of the ocean. The large ocean view back area is used for other things. For $200 + drinks + $35 valet you get a very nice unlimited menu of options like lobster, caviar, wagyu beef . Half the food tasted VERY good, others were OK. The Iberian Ham tasted bad and we sent it back. They offered no discount due to the bad ham. Also, they told us at check in that the valet was only $20 for Navio guests and that it would be added to our bill. But it was not. I wasn't expecting this discount until they mentioned it. Overall, the Ritz is super expensive and you should get excellent value for the price. It is the nicest hotel by far in HMB and I love the grounds. However, I would not do it again for the price.

Enjoyed the first seating at Sunday Brunch and was totally impressed by the vast selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts. From the red pepper hummus and flat bread, to the sushi, smoked salmon and shrimp, along with the broad selection of meats and cheeses at the charcuterie station, everything was fresh and the flavors were robust. The tenderloin was excellent, the brisket was a bit fatty but flavorful, the roasted potatoes and vegetable were well seasoned and the bacon crispy. The highlight for me, however, was the dessert table. I had some of everything chocolate, from cookies to two kinds of mousse, the candies and even the chocolate pumpkin bread. Be sure to take advantage of the cliff overlook and golf course walking path either before or after the meal as you'll need to burn off the calories! Even Chase at the valet made the Ritz experience great.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a disappointment!
Had dinner with a group of 14 in the wine room area. It took forever for a server to even check in on our group. Our meals came out at separate times. I ordered flat bread, salad and a glass of wine. I only received the flat bread. The person next to me ordered salmon which never came. My husband got the pumpkin soup which was cold. This was the worst service I have ever received in any restaurant ever. They had no problem adding a 20% service charge to the bill. The manager came over and I explained what was happening. She apologized and the lady next to me got her salmon as the desert arrived. Ridiculous. This was a $900 meal. I wil never eat a meal at the Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay again. Wish I could give zero stars
