A taste of local food
We had dinner at New Ubin CHIJMES when we visited Singapore in January. It was very crowded and noisy. The food quality was good, but not spectacular.
Be the first to ReplyDeeply disappointing experience
Was told the crabs range from 300 to 400g: had chilli crab and salted egg crab, which were both disappointing. The crab meat was unfortunately not fresh. The sambal kang kong was too salty. The seafood hor fun was lack lustre. Our whole family was quite disappointed with the whole experience. We recalled their outlet in Sin Ming Industrial estate in 2016 was excellent, cannot imagine that quality dropped so drastically. Their service need work as well. The manager told us the 800g crab is a better choice after we feedback. However, the waiter did not offer us this option at all. We cannot understand why would a restaurant have an inferior item on their menu. If chilli crabs taste like this, it will never be our national dish. Another issue was the waiter taking our CNY plant away without asking if we wanted them to keep it for us. Not surprisingly, we forgot to take it after our meal. Their toilet was also in a state of disrepair, with cabinet doors hanging off the hinges. We were quite surprised there were so many diners in the restaurant despite the poor quality food.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious chili crab
Came for dinner and was not disappointed! The restaurant is a bit hard to find as it is on the upper floor of a big center. The space is quite large and they have a good amount of servers. Our waitress, Queenie, was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations. We started with the chicken satay (we enjoyed it, but it was as expected, nothing to differentiate it from other satays we had) and then had the chili crab with steamed buns and the claypot tequila chicken. The chili crab was outstanding albeit extremely messy (they give you a bib and gloves) and a good amount of work. If you aren't into crab meat as much, I would recommend just ordering the chili crab sauce and eating it with a steamed bun or rice (much cheaper and easier to eat). We also ordered the claypot chicken per Queenie's recommendation which was tasty, but didn't evoke Singaporean flavors for me. We ended up having a bit leftover as the portion is large. Would recommend eating here, specifically ordering the chili crab or chili crab sauce depending on your preference. The chili crab was the real star of the meal and was one of the best dishes we ate while in Singapore.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent spot at Chijmes with singaporian crab
I have to say I wanted to try singaporian crab but at the same time I was concerned about tourist traps and digestive problems. While shopping at Raffles City we crossed the street as I had drinks before with a friend at a spanish bar at Chijmes, so we ended up browsing for a place to get some food as we were hungry. we ended up choosing a restaurant upstairs, New Ubin and this is where we decided to go for crabs singaporian style, and it was absolutely exquisite, very good sauce, excellent crab and a nice place overall. We will come back next time...
Be the first to ReplyVery good Singapore style seafood
Chijmes hit its heights soon after it opened several years ago and although it now mainly attracts tourists it has continued to try to reinvent itself with new restaurants all the while. New Ubin was one that I wasn't aware of but they do a good job in terms of Singapore favourites such as chilli crab etc. I couldn't say it was better or worse than say the UDMC restaurants.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a great meal!
Because of dietary concerns I was a bit hesitant about being able to eat the dishes that I preferred. The waitress was most helpful in making suggestions and the kitchen was willing to alter their preparations to satisfy my needs. It was truly a great dinner!
Be the first to ReplyOk, but Nothing Special
Nothing Special. The menu is extensive and the wine list is reasonably priced. The food is ok, some dishes lack some flavor. The Halibut is very fatty and lacked some flavor. The starters are probably the best, some nice choices available and next time I would stick to those and some of the vegetarian dishes.
Be the first to ReplyTasty Seafood
Not the flashiest restaurant but worth finding it for delicious seafood particularly chilli crab. Popular with the locals as well as the expat crowd. So popular there are two sittings. The chill and pepper crab are delicious. And even the steak from the USA is tender & melts in the mouth. CHIJMES itself is worth a wonder through as well & looks nice at night lit up
Be the first to ReplyCNY 2022 Reunion Dinner
It was such a disappointment having reunion dinner at new ubin at chijmes. After hearing many good reviews about the restaurant, we decided to book a table for reunion dinner. The food turn out to be terrible. I am sad to say this but I will not be going again. The price is not equivalent to the quality of the food. The fish maw in the fish maw soup smelled oily. The pork ribs tasted like it was prepared in a hurry before hand, only the sauce is hot and poured on it. The prawn was overcooked and tasteless. The crab meat fried rice tasted like plain rice with a sprinkle of crab meat on top of the fried rice.
Be the first to ReplySeafood restaurant with nice steak
This restaurant is part of Ubin Seafood group, and located in CHIJMES. Even though itโs a seafood restaurant, one of their signature dishes apparently is a steak which taste delicious, besides their bee hoon. Pricing is on the upper side but still considered reasonable, services are good and efficient. Worth to consider when youโre in Singapore.

First time here and heard about the place. The famous ribeye and heart attack fried rice comes as a set. Beef was ok and the rice was brown rice apparently cooked in beef fat. Looked like normal brown rice with some flavour and not fried
The rest of the dishes were ok, run of the mill
Great place for an excellent chilly crab.
Amazing chilly crab ( I guess this is the dish for which you go there), reasonably chilly and very tasty. Other guests loved the chicken satay and the Pungol-style Mee Goreng. The style of service might sound a bit special but I really liked it.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing visit
Went first time yesterday for a birthday celebration. Specifically requested for a better table but was placed next to the entrance of kitchen/ food preparation area. Place was quite run down. Staff at check area of our identity (safe management measures) was quite grouchy.
Food wise, nothing to be wow off. The noodles was quite salty and very small portion. Vegetables and Claypot toufu was average. Crabs are not bad only.
Overall, for the price paid, there are alot more better options with nice ambience.
Disappointing Portions
We did a self pick up of our takeaway at the Chijmes outlet and we ordered one of the squid dishes. The portion was very disappointing as we paid $15 for a very small portion of squid.
The other items that we ordered such as the vegetables and fried rice was good, but we were just horrified by how small the portion of the squid was. Will not order it again.
While I completely understand that this is a bad time for most of us, especially so for the F&B industry where only takeaways are allowed, such small portions for the amount that we are paying for is unjustifiable.
The venue itself is a letdown.
The venue itself is a letdown. Terrible pathway to the restaurant and very untidy. Food was generally below par for the group of us. The suckling pig was forgettable, the heart attack fried rice a pale shadow of its former self. The chilli crab was extremely spicy and unedible. Service was decent though and we appreciate the quick response. Desset was the best thing in the meal. Wont be here for a long while
Be the first to ReplyRoom for improvement but still good
This is one of my favorite restaurants when come to entertaining foreign guests. Without failed it impressed my foreign guests with its delicious uniquely Singapore dishes.
Feedback from my last visit on 2 of its most acclaimed signature dishes:
1. The heart-attack fried rice was bland and tasted like soy sauce steam rice. The famous wok hei and pungent flavor was totally missing.
2. The hokkien fried noodle was watery and again wok hei was totally missing.
Fortunately rest of dishes were still at their usual good standard,
Living on a reputation which only existed in its own mind
You have difficulty finding this place and then enter past piles of junk staff lockers and toilets. No staff in sight
Inside looks like a junk shop. Too many tables too close to each other i was in doorway of what was one time a wine store but was now a private dining room this meant a continuous number of people traipsing past
You continually get feeling you are being rushed. Elsie touted many things in fact everything on menu . raw. Blue not pink. They were replaced and had been liberally sprinkled with salt. Veery fish had a bowl of salt with it. The wines were lacklustre French or below par Chilean. Every decent wine was out of stock because they continually told me they were changing their wine list. Hopefully to one that disperses salt. The Steamed squid was ok but too much onion. The famous USDA Angus was very fatty and liberally salted the heart attack rice a massive clump of salty brown rice. The egg plant weird. Elsie removed the cost of the lamb and brought coconut ice cream. All told poor. Would not return.
lovely family dinner
we loved the advice received from senior staff Ms Elsie who recommended some original dishes that we would not have ordered on our own. appreciated the accessible pricing as well. thanks to the New Ubin team for our delightful recent experience.
