Great spot for local seafood at Chijmes where dining spots
Great spot for local seafood at Chijmes where dining spots skew Western. The crab is good of course but special shout out to two special dishes here. LOVE the gai lan special done two ways - traditional garlic stir fry and crispy deep fried. The latter is just utterly addictive. The rib eye platter is pretty impressive too with tender pieces of grilled beef cubes but the beef dripping fried rice that comes with it is all kinds of savory goodness. New Ubin Seafood - nice mash up of local favorites with slight western spins and love the charm of Chijmes.

Three stars for the beef that was cooked right, the waitresses that served us very well. The black pepper and butter crabs was not aroma enough, the salted fish fried rice do not had any wok hei, the other dishes were average in their tastes. If based on those above foods alone, I would just gave 2 stars for the effort. Need rooms for improvement in the taste, spices used and more wok hei.

So it was my last day in Singapore and my brother decided to try out this place in Chijmes. Why not as I have not had good chili crab in quite a while (even though I make a mean version myself with the local Dungeness crabs here in the Bay Area). My brother made a reservation for 5:30 pm cuz my sis-in-law could get out of work at that time. My niece was also studying for her finals and this was a short break between papers. We arrived at the appointed time and were sat down very quickly. We waited a few minutes for my sis-in-law and the waiter came over and asked us to make our order ASAP. This was odd until he explained that there was another seating at 7:30 pm.So we ordered Chili Crab, stir fried kailan, steamed red grouper, hei Chor, fried baby octopus and a rib-eye steak (??? in a seafood restaurant). We also ordered 6 of the fried bread that goes with the chili crab. Most everything was served promptly and all of the reminded me of my childhood days. It was all good even the steak which came with fries and a heart attack fried rice which went well together. The chili crab itself was not too good as it was a little old but the sauce was yummy. It went so well with the bread. Service was quite attentive as there were more than enough staff to go around. It would be a nice place to go for a special occasion. My brother paid but I am sure the prices were reasonable.

The new Singaporean restaurant with many classic dishes from old to modern. Built near a church, it is now a staple to both locals and tourist. Recommended dishes: curry sri lankan crab, blue mussels, US black angus rib eye and live tiger prawnsPro: variety of hard liquorCon: get reservation because its always busy!!

The Chijmes outlet is the newest one and pbb the nicest one in terms of ambiance. Would recommend getting: - Famous beef with heart attack fried rice (very well-cooked beef and the fried rice has a nice wok smell)- Salted egg yolk shrimp - strong egg yolk taste / smell without being overbearing- Garlic baked crab: very sweet crab meat. Gave an overflow of garlic - yes it looks nice but a bit of a waste since you probably don't need that much garlic. Nonetheless a good seafood dish that's different from the famous Singaporean chili crab- Stir-fried bee hoon - great texture with strong wok hei smell (the slightly burnt smell from cooking in large wok pans)-Prawn-paste chicken (har cheong gai) was a bit of a letdown / wish it had a stronger prawn paste smell / taste.- Other items like veggie cooked in two styles, satay are good though not excellent. Good service - would definitely recommend if you want to check out local dishes. For seafood, would still choose Jumbo, etc. over this which serves much better curry crabs and has a wider selection of seafood dishes.
Be the first to ReplyThis was a pretty good experience food-wise.
This branch of New Ubin was just as delicious as the branch on Hillview Avenue (with my comparison based on having visited both branches within a few week period). Dishes are more expensive here than the Hillview branch, but I feel that for the premium location, it's a worthy trade off to take friends who are only visiting Singapore for a short period to this branch. The alternative of taking public transport from the CBD/town area to Hillview and back, or a taxi, aren't that appealing either. For three people, we ordered one small crab, attendant golden man tou, Hokkien mee, prawn paste chicken, and dou miao. All were amazing (I'm craving them as I write this), except the prawn paste chicken I felt wasn't as prawny as it should be (though it was otherwise cooked nicely crispy outside and tender inside), so feel free to skip that one. For those who don't know those dishes, Hokkien mee is a mix of noodles and seafood in a prawn-based sauce, while dou miao are snow pea sprouts cooked to amazingly crunchy yet savory effect. Man tou are small buns that must go with every chili crab dish, because mopping up the chili crab sauce with man tou is the REAL reason people order the dish. Btw, the chili crab sauce here is quite tomato-y and sweet, so I don't think the spice level will be a huge issue even for our foreign friends. The service here was not as stellar as I would have liked though. For example, I had to prompt the service staff to bring extra crab crackers (they brought one for the three of us, which is a little icky especially for foreign friends who aren't used to communal dining in the first place). I also had to prompt them for the chili sauce that is normally serve with Hokkien mee, which really transforms the whole experience eaten with the dish. When I requested these, the servers did comply promptly and cheerfully though. So... if you're going without a local friend to help with all this, remember to request the Hokkien mee chili!
