I had lunch with a friend at this delightful restaurant recently. It was a very enjoyable experience. Its location is somewhat inconspicuous - although just a stone’s throw from Albert Bridge and just off Chelsea Embankment, it’s hidden away to some extent, sheltered from immediate view from the main road by the trees of Chelsea Embankment Gardens. What is more, the bustling King Road is a good five minutes walk away. I suspect that means it does not get much passing trade. If so, that is a great pity because it is surely one of the very best eateries in this part of London. Once you approach it, however, it’s impossible to miss. The exterior is painted white and a lovely shade of pastel blue and is draped with sprays of beautiful red, pink and blue flowers. The interior is also very tasteful. There is a small bar and a rectangular dining area of around 10-12 tables. The service is friendly and very professional and the food is delicious. I opted for a starter of roasted tomato soup with grilled focaccia, which was stunningly good. My main course (a dish for two people, which I shared with my friend) was prime rib of beef with French fries and a spinach mousse. That too was excellent. For dessert, I had mango and vanilla flavoured cold rice pudding. Fabulous. We shared a bottle of the house red wine (I failed to make a note of its name). All in all, a very convivial occasion. Prices are reasonable (this is Chelsea, remember!): there are set-price menus at £25, £29 and £49 in addition to a very inviting à la carte. A splendid lunch. I unhesitatingly recommend ‘No. Fifty Cheyne’.
