😒 3/5 - Massively disapointing.....

Have eaten at the restaurant on three earlier occasions; had been really impressed and rated it highly as a result. This time not so much. Previously the concept of extremely local sourcing of product was genuinely novel and the dishes l remember and reviewed were full of flavour and complexity. This visit we felt there was a real lack of technical input into many of the dishes and it's just no longer enough to coast along on the novelty value. That being said, the tomato broth starter was perfect, as was the house bread and butter. The shallot dish was also extremely well handled. This appears to be a go to dish at the moment Both Gagnaire and Arpege did a version of this recently and to its credit the N&S version compares favorably. However, the spaghetti squash was a little underdone, losing most of the stringiness the dish relies on. Further the Hollandaise accompaniment was flat and bland adding little except some liquid contrast. The black kale dish lacked any of the advertised caraway seed impact though the soft cheese component helped....a boring, lazy dish though. The following duck with spicy plum sauce dish was also below par. The duck was well cooked and a great product, but the spicy plum sauce a misnomer....flat and bland again. Also a problem with portion sizing as my wife received half as much again of the sauce that my plate exhibited. Presentation also an issue...irregular chunks of duck whacked on the plate next to a spoonful of sauce is just not good enough. The liver spatzle a lovely idea, but was one dimensional and forgettable. Pear dessert was very good while both the black current and mint and the babka were exemplary. The former exhibited an astonishing depth of flavour and was the highlight of the meal. Massive wine list but, and this is from someone that's had to deal with monster tomes regularly, it proved impossible to navigate and verged on being totally unusable. Idiosyncratic structuring of the list under imprecise categories made locating wines really difficult...took me a good five minutes just to find where the burgundies were hiding. Not just me....watched diners all around me take a look and give up,either defaulting to the pairing option or letting the sommelier choose. Neither option a disaster, but makes a mockery of such a list and, if one wanted to be cynical, allows the house to curate to their advantage. Would of course help if the list was posted on line so those with a serious interest could spend some time prior to arrival....many high end restaurants do just that. Service is fine if a little frenetic and the price asked would be more than fair if the delivery was up to scratch. In conclusion and especially if you present a predominantly vegetable based menu (only one protein on the night), more needs to be done and you really need to nail it. As indicated, an unexpected disappointment.
