Odo is an excellent kaiseki restaurant that showcases a number of Japanese foods and preparations. The restaurant is intimate, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the chefs brilliantly execute the menu.I typically visit omakase sushi restaurants and had never visited a kaiseki restaurant before. While I had seen pictures on Instagram of the changing menu over the past few months, I was not sure what to expect. Odo is a kappo restaurant. Kappo is a multi-course meal that can feature a number of foods including sashimi, sushi, tempura, and meat. It is also characterized by the casual setup of the restaurant and emphasizes the proximity between the diner and the chef who cuts and cooks the food before the diner's eyes.I visited Odo this afternoon for lunch and was treated to a delicious 6-course menu featuring hairy crab+scallop, madai miso soup, A5 Kagoshima Wagyu roast beef, chirashi, cold soba with grilled duck breast, and soft serve ice cream with strawberries. Each dish featured a variety of ingredients and showcased a variety of skills. While I enjoyed each and every course, the chirashi that I was served was one of the most magnificent dishes I have ever eaten. It featured sushi rice topped with chutoro, akami, kakimi (scraped tuna mixed with Japanese mustard), shime saba (pickled mackerel), and suzuki (black bass). Additionally, I'd like to give an honorable mention to the grilled duck breast that topped the house-made cold soba noodles. The char was delicious and the skin had a nice layer of fat underneath.I cannot adequately describe how incredible of a time I had this afternoon. Odo is one of the most spectacular restaurants I have eaten at in New York (and Japan). I was sad when the meal came to a close and look forward to returning for lunch (and hopefully dinner) in the near future. Thank you Brian for your hospitality. 5/5.
