Old John's Luncheonette New York Reviews from The Last Year
This was a good spot for dinner for some weary museum goers.
I wasn't in the mood for anything heavy so had the deviled eggs and a small salad. My daughter enjoyed the spaghetti and meatballs while my husband had the chicken pot pie. All were solid choices. The service was fine. The ambiance was okay.
Such a classic diner.
Food is good and clean. Place is clean. Very cute and service is great!
Great food even better service
The food is wonderful -- family style cooking -- but Evelyn made the experience memorable. It was my first time eating here but I'll be back!

diner with below average food with rushed service and prices above their service, food and atmosphere, don't you dare go there after 9, if you are lucky enough to get someone's attention, you will be reminded that kitchen closes at 9:45 ( even on Friday ) really? just open for lunch only!

Solid more upscale take on the traditional diner in UWS
Solid more upscale take on the traditional diner in UWS that is open early (7AM). Clean spot, very accommodating staff, good food. Went with a group of work buddies after a night shift and everyone enjoyed their food. I got the fruit and waffles, but next time might get the huevos rancheros that looked delicious or the shashouka which I was pleased to see on the menu. Mimosas were kind of weak, would skip this.
Great Place. Definitely Go There
This is a great place and inexpensive for New York. We went for breakfast. I had been wanting pancakes and they have several including plain buttermilk which is what I wanted. They were perfect. My wife wanted a waffle and they have a variety. They refill your coffee cup.
Small place.
Had the Greek salad with chicken. It was ok. Dry chicken on the salad. Noise level was high. No place for the servers to be so one stood by the edge of my table my whole meal. I'd try them again on an off time perhaps to keep the noise level down.
Fantastic food and service
We found this little gem when staying in Manhattan, it was so good that we visited twice. The best place we ate at during our stay. The service is fantastic, the staff are so friendly. The chicken club sandwich was fresh and tasty, the lemon meringue pie is a must, it is delicious! Highly recommend if you are visiting New York & will be recommending to others.
The food here is better than standard diner fare.
We had the patty melt, onion rings, and turkey club. The onion rings are lightly battered and seem house made. The turkey is piled high and the ciabatta bread is a nice way to elevate a club sandwich. The patty melt hit the spot despite being a little on the greasy side. We didn't experience any of the service hiccups that some mention. Currently they are expanding into the space next door so I'm curious to see how that pans out.
Excellent diner food.
They have fast friendly service. Good deserts! One if our favorite diners!
I have tried this restaurant several times because I
I have tried this restaurant several times because I recently moved to the neighborhood. It's been really disappointing every time. When I ordered food for pick-up, I got to the restaurant at the time that was texted to me and they hadn't even started the order. They claimed that the order never came through, and I then had to wait while they cooked the order. They did not even offer me a drink of water while I waited. When I ordered food for delivery, they sent a different item than what was on the menu: I was expecting a crisp falafel patty with arugula, pickled red onions, carrots, cucumbers, and vegan tzatziki sauce (as described on the menu), and I received a soggy quinoa burger with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and raw onion. When I called to complain, they told me they had changed the menu, but they clearly hadn't changed the online delivery menu. They told me to contact the delivery service to get my money back! When I ate at the restaurant, I paid in cash and they rounded up the total to the next dollar. So, when I gave them $30 for a $22.50 bill, they gave me back $7.00! Is that even legal? Three strikes and they're out -- I will not ever go back!
All your favorites, made from scratch.
The cod sandwich and egg cream were excellent. The mint chocolate chip ice cream impeccably creamy and exuding fresh mint. A perfect diner. Highly recommend.
Very nice space trying to be an upscale diner.
Mostly pulls it off with food tasting decent but a bit stingy.
Super cute diner with a warm charming interior and decor.
All the decorations from the ice cream sign in the back to the menus were crafted with such detail. Got the crispy chicken sandwich (fries were an additional cost). Overall very good sandwich with a juicy chicken patty in a very light and crispy crust. Sandwich was generously sized. Fries were ok, not crispy and a little more on the soggy side if anything. Friendly service. They also had really nicely decorated outdoor booths that seat around four people each, and each booth had its own AC unit.
I'm mortified.
.. I've need a fan of Old John's Dinner for years. But. Since the re-opening and new ownership. I'm done going there. The food is Ok... the service is rushed... the food variety is limited and OMG if you ask for a substitution the answer in "NO, we don't have it" I realize they don't care because the place is packed... but I'm done
I had mac and cheese and it was good.
When I walked in, a staff member asked "can I help you?" which kind of felt a little rude since I had reservations--but I think he was just very busy. Everyone else was super nice though. Ambiance is a cute old New York diner. There are cocktails and diner-food.
Great food, wonderful menu, generous portions.
Cute and authentic design inside. Beautiful dessert display, but didn't try any.
Horrible Service
the service was terrible they rushed us and asked us multiple times to hurry up. just because we are two teenagers getting dinner, they tried to explain to us things like we are babies. the hostess (redhead) even came to our table and asked us if we were getting dinner because if not we needed to leave because they were busy even though we got here way before everybody. she was very rude in asking and i think they need to be nicer and improve their service. after a minute of sitting down they rushed us and asked us what we wanted to eat and drink. the food was good just they need to work on the service. (plus the place was not busy)
Classic diner
We booked to go to the natural history museum and looked for somewhere near to have breakfast. After looking at reviews we gave old John’s a go and wasn’t disappointed. Nice welcome and friendly staff, the food was cooked really well and the seating was comfortable.
The Best Diner on the Upper Westside
A friend of mine told me he had made a reservation at Old John’s Diner on West 67th Street, just off Amsterdam Avenue. I was thinking, “ is that unusual?”. Well, what my friend did was make a reservation for one of the outdoor booths that offered individual heaters and air conditioners and was completely separated from the other booths! It turned out to be a brilliant way to have a private lunch with a wonderful server, Rebeca, who gave us the best suggestions on what to order! I had a fantastic Cobb Salad with a cup of minestrone soup and my friend had a tuna melt with the best homemade fries I’ve had at any New York restaurant! And if the booths are already reserved, the interior of the diner has a real folksy atmosphere! I would have been just as happy to eat inside! If you are lucky to live or work in the neighborhood, I think you’d make this place your favorite dining spot and if your visiting from out of town, you’ll be guaranteed a fantastic meal!
