Heard about this place on instagram, and I will say it is a hidden gem!! Our server Blake was phenomenal - super friendly and guided us to some yummy happy hour drinks (jelly bean). Truly 10/10 server, and we will definitely be back again. For food, my partner and I had the Bang Shrimp (10/10) and Wagyu Yakitori (another 10/10) to start. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended the Bang Shrimp as it was both of our favorites. For an entree, my partner had the Tonkotsu Ramen (6/10). Honestly, not the best ramen we have had but still a decent choice! I had the Calikatsu Roll (9/10) which was delicious, I especially liked the creamy crabmeat on top. Also, I heard a lot about the Spicy Tuna Roce Crisps (10/10) which was definitely worth eating on a full stomach. Looking forward to coming back in the future!

Made a reservation. When we walked in it took a few awkward minutes to be acknowledged due to how close the front door is to where 3 people working behind the bar made eye contact and ignored us until I spoke up. I was super excited to come here, I work in the service industry and love trying out new spots. Ambiance was awesome but the staff seemed annoyed they had patrons almost. Food came out extremely delayed and not together. And was unfortunately really really salty. The most unfortunate part of the experience for me was the rushed behavior of our server. She almost made it hard to order because she was already trying to walk away before we could finish inquiring about the menu , and she didn't know how to explain the saki, the use of the word okay with the tone of an annoyed teenager speaking to their mother was the vibe. Super rude in my opinion, she made me feel uncomfortable, unwelcome almost. I know this is long but ... dang , my friends and I are really awesome chill people. I don't know if we caught a bad night, I know Sunday nights everyone is spent from the rush of a weekend ... but the energy was off. It also wasn't even busy, which is what I found most confusing. Prob won't be back , would not recommend unless the staff learns how to give all of their guests the same quality of service .

Moved to fishtown 4 months ago and ate here every couple days- would get happy hour take out almost twice a week. They updated menu and changed prices. I ordered a take out order like I always have and this time was awful and one of the worst experiences I've had in a restaurant in philly. Placed order on the phone SPECIFICALLY asked to pay over phone. Person told me that was too much for them work pay when I get there. I got there a bill was DOUBLE the price online. I told the person who took my order it wasn't the price and different then online. She took my card told my she was going to ask but just and processed the FULL payment without my permission when I specifically asked why the price was that high. Just got back and the order is wrong also. Went from my favorite place on my street to eat at to someone that I felt like just stole from me and that's not okay. Had so many nice dates there but I unfortunately will not be back. sad to see the change in owners has now caused such a change in service. This is not right and fraud.
Be the first to ReplyStumbled upon this place and the vibe was really nice.
The crab rangoon had real crab, yet did not taste good (if you know you know). For the price the sushi was ok, but it could have been better. Most likely won't be back.
Be the first to ReplyConsistently great food.
It's my number one choice for happy hour. So many great bites. Love their sakiwide special. The seating can be a bit awkward if you're at the bench seating along the wall, but that's a small critique against the overall experience. It's great for a date night, a place to take your friends to who are from out of town, a birthday celebration, or a quick bite.

Food was great after we waited for an hour and a half to come out - server was not dillgent at all. Once we got the food after an hour wait, the check was dropped on the table before we finished eating. The only apologize we received was when we looked annoyed - and the excuse we got was due to take out...

The food took forever to arrive, and when we finally did get to eat, it was surprisingly meh considering how expensive it was. Really don't recommend this place.
Be the first to ReplyGreat atmosphere.
Come with a great comfy temperature. Wait staff very accommodating Food was great and fresh across the board. Sushi was flavorful and fresh. Appetizers were great Great stop. Worth the price.
Be the first to ReplyBirthday party ruined by disappointing service.
We had a reservation for eight people at 7:30, we were not seated until 8:15. Ramen, sushi, and plates all arrived at wildly different times over the hour and a half we were there. Birthday girl got her food after most of the party had finished eating - we had to ask for it twice! One carafe comped, but that does not make this right. If making and delivering food for a large party is something your kitchen cannot handle, please don't accept the reservation.

Been here a few times for happy hour and I feel like you can really get a bang for your buck. I personally opt for the off happy hour cocktails and concentrate on the food. The tuna rice crisps are favorite item as well as the chirashi bowls which are definitely a great deal for the amount of fish and sides that come in an order. Order the tea time! Very refreshing and balanced flavors and the lemon garnish with the burnt sugar coating is the best part. Staff is super attentive and happy to give recommendations catered to your tastes. I also love that you can sit at a table or the bar during happy hour.

GREAT OMAKASE - 15/10 - LOVED IT!We had the omakase and saké pairing on March 16 to celebrate a birthday and it was a wonderful evening. We were promptly seated at 6:00 and there were 3 other couples so only 8 of us, and Chef/Itamae Kevin (the Sushi Whisperer) Yanaga took us through 25 courses of amazing food. The saké pairing with the food was the BEST we that have had (and we have had quite a few from NYC to Philly to Canada, Asia etc.) and had a nice mix of daiginjo junmai, junmai and even nigori saké - one was not even Japanese and it was amazing, very smoky-sweet and was fantastic with the selections it was paired with during the omakase. It should be noted that the sakés for the pairing are generally not available on the menu - and there are a nice selection of sakés on the menu.I often describe the food, the dishes in a review but in this case, I think it's better to describe it as the best traditional sushi somewhat reinterpreted, reimagined and relevated but still with a wholly Japanese aesthetic tinged with some Western nods. A great part of the omakase was the discovery of the dishes, Yanaga-san's description and sharp wit also come into play and so no real spoilers in this review.Think foie gras and awase miso, osetra caviar on nigiri sushi, uni garnishing a slab of futomaki, an escabeche sauced bite...Every bite of every offering that Yanaga-san created for us was sublime, nuanced and delicious, the last omakase we had that was of this caliber was at Hiroki (yes, they are friends) and yes, you should try both because they are amazing yet different from each other in the same way that great painters are - the omakase at Izakaya By Yanaga is a delicious, artistic masterpiece to be experienced, enjoyed and remembered. We will be revisiting Yanaga-san's omakase again!

The service here is phenomenal! I can't here for dinner for my birthday with a reservation. They really took care of us and everyone working here was lovely. We had the okonomni which is a 4 course menu. The sashimi was the star of this meal. The fish is so fresh and you can taste the quality. I also really liked the curry short rib bao, but I have to agree with the other reviewers there wasn't much of a curry flavor to the bao. The bbq wagyu lettuce wraps tasted like bulgogi and were also good. I was kind of disappointed that there side vegetable dishes (cucumber and pepper/carrot) were the same 2 across the small plates, the appetizers, and the chirashi. They were also way too salty. I also had the ginger mocktail and it was made well. I definitely want to come back and try the omakase experience.

I went here for my birthday about a week ago because I was craving the tuna rice crisps and crab baos from the first time I ate here. It's so disappointing how they changed the recipes for them and I'm pretty embarrassed that I took a friend here because of how unappetizing the flavors were:The tuna rice crisps is now a lukewarm red mush on hard rice (instead of the cool fresh orange tuna slices over a crispy rice crunch). The crab baos were really bitter in flavor and the fried batter was soggy.I ordered the duck onigiri too before I knew the food quality dropped. I only tasted oil and there was barely even a hint of meat/duck flavor or piece. Even plain white rice is more delicious than this.I added the broth tantan mazemen in hopes to save our tastebuds. Though the ramen wasn't bitter, overly oily, or lukewarm, it still didn't taste as good as packaged ramen is.I never want to come back here again. If I ever do, it's for my friends who still want to check it out despite my warnings....Oh! But our waitress was super nice and sweet!

Be the first to ReplyIt's hard to recommend this place.
If a restaurant is going to charge a premium price they need to provide at least generous portions or spectacular product. Izakaya does neither. If you're not in the area don't make this a destination spot as you will likely be disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyWe saw the hype and decided to try.
Good service, fair prices, okay food. We had high expectations but was a bit disappointed instead. Our fave was probably the brussel sprouts and least fave was duck onigiri.. sushi was average, nothing special.

Japanese food fried and seasoned to resemble sports bar wings...basically. I would not call this an Izakaya personally.

My boyfriend and I experienced Omakase By Yanaga at this restaurant. It was only limited spots they offered. My bf got lucky when he booked the resv. Only 8 limited sittings offered. 25 course menu. I liked the fusion style of Foie gras on rice cracker absolutely outstanding. Everything was so fresh and clean we liked it so much. The texture of sushi was melting overall great omakase!

My friend and I stopped here for happy hour yesterday and had such a great time! Cute decor, friendly and fast service, and tasty food.We ordered the spicy salmon roll, shrimp tempura roll, tuna rice crisps, bluefin tuna chiraishi bowl, and soft shell bao bun. Tuna rice crisps were #1. We were raving about that dish. Bluefin tuna was #2. The fresh cuts of tuna paired nicely with the pickles, seaweed salad, rice and furikake. Highly recommend both dishes! Fun cute spot if you are ever in the area!
