This is a review of the Chicken Paprikash from the Parsnip
This is a review of the Chicken Paprikash from the Parsnip Cafe part of this restaurant. So it turns out that the chicken used in this dish is an industrial formed, pressed together, small rectangular log of spent chicken.I've had this dish a few times. First at Parsnip's original location on York blvd, and a few days ago, from its current joint location at Lemon Poppy. The York Parsnip was so warm, friendly oozing of home cooked food. The chicken in this dish was always bone dry, like it had given everything into some broth, then made it into this dish. I had assumed it gave its all into THIS dish, and maybe this is just their style of cooking. The rest of the flavors are very good. Plus the polenta is good.Fast forward to a couple days ago when I ordered this to go. There was a full unmashed rectangular log of chicken in it. I should have taken a pic. But I just thought it was very odd, and it never crossed my mind that they didn't use fresh chicken. Then I realized, yes indeed, that log is an industrial-pressed together log of spent chicken. The menu says chicken thighs. No fresh chicken thigh ever looked like this. This log, when you press on it, mashes into small pretty uniform sticks of dry chicken. The kitchen just missed smashing this log before serving it.This is completely insulting. They think so little of their customers that they would do this, use industrial unwanted chicken instead of fresh chicken. And charge $18 for it! This makes me sad, but mostly, it's truly insulting. When I arrived to pick up my order which I had paid for online, the young women up front made me wait forever, while she was doing - something. I can't tell why she was so frazzled. She was just staring at a dish that should probably have been brought out to one of the few diners there. Then a young man who had been sweeping and generally cleaning came to help me. He hadn't washed his hands, but I didn't what else he was going to do after helping me with my pick up order. Well, it turns out my order was already packaged and sitting on a ledge near the door, getting colder by every minute that the frazzled women who had no capacity to multi-task, kept me waiting.

Cannot say enough about how delicious the food is here - unpretentious, high quality, and satisfying - suggestion to add the name to the sign so folks know you're there ! Indoor and outdoor seating - nice casual service

Perfect for rainy day takeout. So hearty, so good, and you can tell it's made with a lot of passion and love.

They moved locations which is confusing! It's at lemon poppy now and this needs to be updated. The dinner menu is small but delicious. I highly recommend the white bean dip and the polenta. The service is sweet too :)
Be the first to ReplyA very delicious place! Hidden gem to say the least.
All the food I had was wonderful. I do wonder if they use thickeners in the stew as my stomach was upset next day but my bad because of the gluten allergy. I enjoyed it and it was worth the pain... might even expense myself again it was so yummy. Lol. Our server was a very sweet gal and I could talk to her for hours. Plenty of parking. Indoor and outdoor seating. They also have a brunch until 2pm she said! Loves it!!!
Be the first to ReplyA favorite of mine for modern hearty Romanian dishes.
Their mamaliga is amazing as is the beef goulash. The space is cute too.
Be the first to ReplyEasily the tastiest dinner I've eaten in the 90065 zip code.
At first we were confused with the name "Lemon Poppy," but we called in and were told that it's Parsnip in the evening. I had the chicken paprikas. My BF had the schnitzel. Both were scrumptious. Excellent service too. Great music and ambiance.

This place is inside Lemon Poppy if you get confused and can't find it. There is ample parking and the restaurant is a decent size with both indoor and outdoor seating. The staff is amazing all around, some of the best service. Very helpful and friendly and smiling faces. Have good recommendations and checked in on us regularly without being too much or annoying. We tried their potatoes and eggplant taquitos starters as well as their goulash and schnitzel meals. Everything was fantastic. It tasted a lot like comfort food, and was very filling without making you feel guilty. We took home leftovers and even a cold brew to go. They have a event selection of beer and my daughter and I loved their orange juice which tasted so fresh! I can't wait to come back and try their other dishes.Bathroom is clean though there's only one which wasn't a problem. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

Parsnip is such a gem! I don't think I ever had Romanian food prior to coming here. The food is delicious whether delivered or eaten on the cute little patio. You can't go wrong with their Paprikash! It's absolutely soul-warming and hearty. I highly suggest ordering it with the warm buttery piece of toast. Not into meat? Try the Veggie Barly! It's a hearty bowl of veggies and grains that make you full without feeling like you "over did it". If you have a sweet tooth, pretty much any dessert is great, if you purchase them in time! They are so popular, I find myself often missing out haha. Luckily I've had the pleasure of getting my hands on their coconut chia pudding. Cold, creamy goodness!

Very laid back and peaceful. I understand the menu might be seasonal? I hope they bring things back occasionally.
