Horrible, disgusting, rude
Disgusting restaurant and a true rip off. Will challenge my bill. Understand they r closing. Why am I not surprised? Disgusting everything! Should have known there were problems when we first sat down. Uproar upstairs. Not on paying attention to us even though I tried to flag them down and I am not subtle. Heads turned the other way. I have never, ever felt so ripped off from.
Be the first to ReplyReally delicious Italian food.
This is a review from Aug 27, 2022. We were 2 couples, we didnโt reserve an specific place and we were sat outside (nice patio to enjoy a Summer night). Our waiter was adorable and very professional, spoke Italian with one of the people on our party, suggested from appetizers through main course and dessert. The minor issue was when the check came, they were our of the wine we initially ordered, suggested another one on the same price, and we acceptes it. When the check came the wine charged was 3 times the price, which they took care right away when we noticed. For that reason I didnโt give a 5. The evening was pleasant and the food, delicious.
Be the first to ReplyNot my number 1 choice
Ok.. so we dine out and travel often. I sooo wanted to give this place 5 stars.. however 4 stars is all I could give. Dinner was good I guess I expected more from a Michelin restaurant.. canโt say I need to return, but I would return.
Be the first to ReplyDO NOT EAT AT THIS CHICAGO RESTAURANT!
DO NOT EAT AT THIS RESTAURANT!!! My review has nothing to do with the food. I was with a group of 10 business colleagues having dinner at this restaurant. We asked to divide the check 9 ways ( my wife and I were on the same bill), which the restaurant did. The restaurant has the standard CHIP reading credit machine. 15 minutes after leaving the restaurant, I was notified by my credit company that there was a second charge to my account of over $1500 from this restaurant. When I called my credit card company, the representative told me that the first charge was entered using the CHIP, but the second charge was keyed in manually , 15 minutes after the first charge. Because they felt this could turn into further charges, the card use was suspended, and we could no longer use the card on our trip. I called the restaurant right away, and spoke to the owner, Mauro. He insisted that this did not happen. The next day, I found out that several other members of my dinner party were also overcharged, including one member who was overcharged $7000. Three of my group returned to Pelago that day to again talk to Mauro, the owner. In that conversation, Mauro told us that our credit card companies were lying to us. That he didnโt overcharge us, and that we were wrong. After showing him the statements from our banks, he told us that the banks were wrong as well. He proceeded to brag that he had the dayโs end printout that would exonerate him. However, when he showed us that printout, the charges on the sheet did not match the receipts that we had that were given to us by the waiter to pay our bill. There is definitely some type of financial shenanigans occurring with this restaurant, and the owner, Mauro. When visiting Chicago, please steer clear of this restaurant and choose one that will treat you right.
Be the first to ReplyA must dining experience in Chicago
We enjoyed a memorable meal at Pelago. The service was superb and the plates were top notch. Mauro took very good care of us. The wine selection is expansive.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful proper Italian restaurant, dress up and have a great meal, really worth going
Being mid Covid there were only a few tables occupied but itโs a small but lovely room so it didnโt matter. We had delicious food, wonderful risotto with shrimp - really good!!! And the Ragu pasta was great and the rabbit delicious. Lovely bottle of Barolo to wash it down and it was the perfect meal
Be the first to ReplyWe Got the Boot
Our experience was awful. After being seated in the highest traffic area at the foot of a stair, we questioned the table as "is this really the best seat in the house?? We also brought a very expensive bottle of wine to have the restaurant cork and serve the wine. We did not see the qualification on the website or on Open table, that no corkage of Italian wines was allowed. We asked where it said this on the website and they did not show us. I told them it was my 65th birthday and it was a special bottle of wine purchased in Tuscany. A wine that was fore surely NOT on there wine list. Then the owner /chef came out of the kitchen and said "no cook for you. Get out". The most rude service establishment I have ever visited. I am sure if they would have taken the time to show us, it was our mistake, and this was stated on Open table and on their website, we would have bought a bottle of there Italian wine and had a fine meal. A stuck-up, non friendly place that fostered the attitude of "Be Reasonable and do it My Way or the Highway" . Pick another Italian place like Coco Pazzo where they very willingly corked our bottle.
Be the first to ReplyWhy do they cheat?
Why the upselling "tastings" that are not on the menu and therefore have no price? Why do they bring a bottle of wine for tasting and then disappear away from the table to "decant" it, only never to see the bottle or cork again, and then the decanter never sits on the table? Why do they - when they clearly have good food - go OUT OF THEIR WAY! - to rip you off?
We live local. We initially (starting 6 or so years ago) had good experiences there. Then about 3 years ago things started to change.... Yes, Mauro apologized for the $600 bottle of wine (Jesus says they didn't have the one my husband picked, but he would select one if that's ok, after all - he said - you don't need to spend a lot of money to have good wine right? To the tune of $600. Not sure what he drinks when it's actually an expensive bottle? Are you kidding me?). And when we finally cleared the bad taste out of our mouths 18 months later, Mauro did have a bottle of wine delivered to the table without us saying a word and comped it. I did research the wine later, it retails for $60 - but it's the thought that counts, maybe?? Fine. The next time (what can I say, the food is good and it's 1/2 block away and we are gluttons for punishment, clearly?), we ordered as entrees 1 pasta for myself and the sirloin for my husband. Francesco offered to split the plates so we could "share, like a tasting". Then he shows up with 2 pasta tastings and says nothing until I ask why we have 2 pasta tastings when we only ordered 1 (singular!) pasta dish. He didn't offer to return them and blamed the kitchen. With quite an attitude. Whatever, we've eaten out before(!) and usually kitchen mistakes aren't charged; we didn't make a fuss. But then he brought out 2 sirloin orders, 1 for each of us. Not that we knew it at the time... we thought it was 1 order split on 2 plates. Anywho, they charged us $38 for EACH pasta (my original pasta was $26) and $58 for EACH sirloin. So we went from $81 for 2 entrees as ordered to $192 as charged. Wow. HOW ON EARTH do you have the nerve to over double our order and then charge us? Shameless. I sent Francesco back to adjust the bill twice. He thought he was clever and would remove an item but then up the wine charge so the bottom line was the same. Can't make this stuff up! At some point we just had to leave before it was going to get ugly.
Ultimately it's really sad that Mauro and his crew are resorting to such underhanded and dishonest tactics. OH, one last thing - be careful about wines by the glass!! First they'll tell you they don't sell it, but then they'll offer it if you finish your bottle but don't want a second. So, you won't know what you're getting (because they don't list wines by the glass....), and you'll be mighty surprised by the price. Cheers!!
Poor service, average food, outrageous prices "Plague-alo"
Reasonable food but poor service. Outrageously overpriced to the point of cheating. At a dinner this week (7/28/2021), a mediocre Santa'lena Sauvignon Blanc off the menu was quoted at $78 and $88. The retail price? $17! Salad special price not quoted - but billed $38. Gelato order incorrect - likely because they ran out of what was ordered. Did not bring ice water for two of the guests - but two bottles of Pellegrino when one was ordered. Time between finishing salad and serving the main course? Over half an hour! Likely a mix-up but no explanation or apology. Avoid like the plague. Not Pelago but "Plague-alo".
Be the first to ReplyA recipe for disaster
Outrageously overpriced, extremely disorganized staff and awful as in NO customer service. Do not go here unless you like being ripped off and insulted along the way by their oh so snooty staff. There are so many other great Italian restaurants in the area that have much better food that is priced fairly and offers a much more enjoyable experience. Pelago is Not at all worth it.
Be the first to Replya $25 dollar bottle of wine. Billed at $368.00
I was there this past Friday night celebrating an anniversary. Looked at the wine list and tried to order a Luce. They were out. Picked another super Tuscan and that was also not available. The waiter asked me what I liked and I said a sangiovese blend. He brought a Crognolo to the table and said this was the same price point. It was fine. When I git the check I saw it they charged $368 a bottle and we had two bottles. It did not taste like that level of wine. Upon departure I asked to see the empty bottle, but it never arrived. I discovered the wine they sold me ,Crognolo ,retailed for $25 a bottle. I called and asked to speak to the manager to see if they possibly made a mistake. I was told they would call back. No one did. I called again and was told someone would contact me. I am very sympathetic to people in the restaurant industry., dealing with Covid. But it appears, these people are just thieves. It gives the whole industry a bad name.
Be the first to ReplyTake away - it was a delight.
I had a couple of take away experiences with PELAGO and I have to report two excellent dinners. I am planning to rely on this Chicagoan gem for the upcoming lockdown. The dessert was in particular an amazing delight. A side note worth considering: you get your dinner with a special set of breads and focaccia. The true art of this chef can truly give consolation.
Be the first to ReplyLegendary Mauro!
We came in this restaurant after the suggestion of an New Yorker hotel manager. Mauro was simply legendary, the food was exactly what i expected. I am italian and i found in Chicago all my savours, all good ingredients. The best!
