Love Providence
My son lives in Providence, RI and he and his wife are real foodies. They frequent this restaurant often and wanted me to try it since I was in town for a few days (I live six hours away). It was just as amazing as they always raved. I had the halibut, my son had the steak and his wife had the stuffed chicken breast. The food, the presentation and the wait staff in this restaurant are hard to beat. Recognizing that Providence has much to offer as far as restaurants, this one is definitely worth visiting. As a thank you for hosting me and showing me around, I will be buying a gift certificate for them to return to Persimmon. Definitely worth a visit!
Be the first to ReplyAcceptable but not outstanding
Providence has a vibrant culinary scene so our bar is pretty high. It has been years since this restaurant moved from Bristol to the old Rue space so we wanted to try it. They focus on small plates so the portions are not large and sharing is not really feasible. But our food was tasty. As in many places these days it was too noisy for my taste ( maybe a seat in the bar area would have been better). The service was OK as well but not exceptional. As I said our bar is pretty high but I am not sure we’ll return.9

Persimmon came highly recommended so the bar was high. All four of us were delighted by our entree choices: duck, truffle risotto, scallops and pasta Bolognese. Going backwards, the honey nut squash soup was a superb starter. I loved my cocktail. Our waiter was experienced and personable. We also enjoyed the ambiance. And I’m a sucker for wide plank floors. A good place to mark my husband’s birthday!
Be the first to ReplyPretentious descriptions of dishes....
3/823 My wife and I made a reservation for Persimmon after Celeb-chef Jacques Pepin and his daughter dined there; so we said “what the heck, lets try it.” This place is supposedly a ‘foodie’ dining establishment where ‘pre-fixe’ dining is encouraged, so but be prepared to drop some serious cash. We opted instead to try their entrees Ala-carte. We wanted to taste and try each other’s dishes. We started with the Gem salad, gem lettuce, bacon ‘bits’, chives, breadcrumb, cured yolk, creamy vinaigrette. The dressing was especially note-worthy, its consistency coated the lettuce perfectly. An excellent starter. We also enjoyed the beet salad of roasted and smoked beets, Asian pear, pickled persimmon, mint.crispy, smokey, this was well prepared. Their bread offering, one piece of home-made focaccia-like bread with butter. Scrumptious! Another slice would have been nice though. BUT our evening came to a crash when I tasted their Salmon tartare, listed as ‘Cured Ora king salmon belly tartare, Meyer lemon, crispy rice, ossetra caviar’. I am not sure what the chef was thinking? A tartare usually features smooth, silky, cured salmon that you can taste, but why brag about ‘belly salmon’ when all I could taste was the rice cubes that the skimpy amount of chopped salmon rested atop. When I asked the waiter about this, he was not sympathetic to my protest. Why brag about the origin of the salmon, when it tasted like any salmon you buy at a supermarket? Dessert was strange since we ordered the Chocolate tart with Guanaja chocolate ganache, caramel sauce, sea salt. but we chewed on a very cold round of chocolate, similar to a chocolate bar, sitting on a Caramel sauce. Where was the crust to the tart? Why not call it a chocolate bar? We were still hungry so we shared the Boneless stuffed chicken breast, chicken- fat-roasted root vegetables, potato purée, jus. This was tasty and creative. The chicken was probably ‘sous-vide’ in a tube, then sautéed to crispness. This was well-prepared. If you want to dine and taste good food, this is the place, but be prepared to walk away with a little hungry. And I do think their descriptions of their dishes border on the bizarre. Lets stick to the truth and tell diners what they are really eating. ~tiaotse~
Be the first to ReplySmall plates, Big bill
I didn’t realize when I booked this that the restaurant is part of the small plate, sharing fad. Not a fan. That said, the food was well executed and tasty. Still would not pay these prices to leave unsatisfied. We started with the beyond minuscule cornbread and fish croquettes. Thought the latter were too mushy. Hard to ruin cornbread. Then had the scallops (a big hit), pasta bolognese (mixed verdict), sweet potato gnocchi, (not a hit) and the black or squid ink spaghetti (best dish there). Also two salads. The beet salad was way too smoky flavored. The other mixed greens was a lot better. This all came to $200 without alcohol or dessert. We opted to go elsewhere for dessert since we were still hungry. Do NOT ever order the chef’s choice - one huge ripoff. Fell for that at a popular Boston restaurant. Never again. One last thing - the restaurant is very loud when it is full.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent. We celebrated our
Excellent. We celebrated our sons 21st birthday here with a party of 9 people. Ordered pretty much every appetizer, most of the entrées, and almost all the desserts. Everything was fabulous from the food to the service. Can’t wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplyTop tier restaurant in Providence, RI
My wife and I live in Seattle, Washington and Scottsdale, Arizona, but am a frequent visitor in Providence, Rhode Island. Persimmon has moved from its previous smaller location in Bristol to its new location in the Fox Hill neighborhood of Providence. At our most recent visit there on July 13,2022, we ordered deviled eggs with trout roe, cornbread with foie gras butter, beet salad, and salmon tartare as out first courses, followed by sweetbreads, foie gras, and agnolotti with lemon, ricotta, fresh English peas, and Australian black truffle as our second course. For dessert, we had a tart with summer berries, pistachio crumble, and rhubarb mousse, topped with goat's milk yogurt ice cream, and lime cheesecake with coconut crust, naval orange, and yuzu pudding. The deviled eggs were a little heavy on mustard which somewhat overpowered the trout roe, but were otherwise quite good. Over the years, as a serious home cook, I’ve refined lots of variations on develed eggs. My wife’s comment on the deviled eggs at Persimmon: “They’re good, but not nearly as good as yours.” On the other hand, the beet salad, versions of which I also often make, was amazing. I almost overruled my wife’s wish to order it. That would have been a big mistake. The cornbread with foie gras butter? Wonderful. The salmon tartare? Also wonderful. The sweetbreads were probably my biggest disappointment of the night. They were overcooked, too firm and too dry, probably because they were parboiled before grilling them and then spent a little too much time on the grill. I’ve had much better sweetreads elsewhere. The fois gras, on the other hand, was wonderful, especially due to the shredded duck neck meat underlying the foie gras. Genius! The agnolotti with fresh English peas, lemon, ricotta, and Australain truffles was nice, but the truffles were not worth the $30 surcharge. Both of the desserts were good, but I was especially enamored with the berry tart with the underlying rhubarb mousse adding a nce tartness to the dish. Bottom line: I have some quibbles here and there, but would put Persimmon in the top tier of Providence restaurants. They aim high, and even if they don’t always hit the bullseye, they come close enough, often enough, that I will happily return there when I’m in Providence.

From the first moment we entered, we had an amazing experience. Wonderful dining room with cozy corners and invitingly warm ambiance. Comfortable seating and excellent sound management, perfect lighting. Our wait staff was informed, attentive and not intrusive. The variety of cocktails and wine list was nicely developed. And of course the food! From the nicely presented amuse-bouche to an incredible array of fresh handmade pastas, presented with intricate and beautiful flavors. The finishing of each plate - care and attention to detail was 5 star without a doubt. I’ll end with a comment on a starter - the asparagus soup. The textures in this soup, flavor and color were beautiful. Well done to the entire team! I can’t wait to come back to visit soon.

We felt welcomed from the moment we got out of our car the the moment we said goodbye. The service was spectacular without a hint of pretense. Smiles everywhere we looked! And the food…i don’t even know what to say. Each dish was a treat for eyes and palates alike. The menu was so very interesting without being weird for just weird’s sake and vividly highlighted both the season and the local fare. We cannot wait to go back. This was the most money we have ever spent on a meal for our four family. It was easily and without question worth every penny. We could have restrained ourselves on drinks, dessert and coffee and been very satisfied. The menus is NOT overpriced. we just chose to indulge and, as i said before, it was SO worth it!
Be the first to ReplyHidden gem - shhh
Another great meal at this hidden gem ! We loved the tuna tataki, soft shell crab, steak and risotto - the foie gras was perfectly prepared though we would have preferred a sweeter sauce. Dessert was delicious and great size for the price ! Can’t wait to come back !
