Philippe Melbourne Reviews from The Last Year
A lovely small restaurant hidden away in Melbourne.
Fantastic service and atmosphere. Highly recommended.
Chez Philippe – bon appetit
This restaurant is tucked away in a Collins Street laneway, basement style and opens into a beautiful dining space offering table sizes for everyone, large groups or small. It’s worth a look just to see the splendidly ornamental bar area but also to observe a team of professional waiting staff in action. They all look immaculate, are very welcoming and have excellent wine and food knowledge. The host, Chez Philippe Mouchel is a very friendly man who always has a kind greeting and oversees every dish before it gets the okay for table delivery. This is his fastidious touch that ensures high standards are maintained for diners. Rock oysters natural were as fresh as ever and so too was the succulent barramundi. It’s not often that a wine list offers such a wide range of quality French wines so be sure to indulge, some of the white wine choices are first rate. Visiting Melbourne without a booking at Philippe would leave a huge hole in any itinerary. 8.1/10
Disappointing French Cuisine
Food - Extremely disappointed overall 1. The oysters were still attached to shell, presentation simple 2. The pate en coute , was actually a slice of a terrine with a stale soggy crust , lacked any duck flavour, was chunky and minimal presentation. 3. Thousand Guinea scotch fillet cut of meat had tough sinew making it extra chewy Presentation was extremely poor, lazy workmanship and did not excite the senses with lump of lettuce and raw thinly sliced onion rings. 4. Bearnaise showed signs that it had split during the making of it , then reconstituted to make usable. 5. Cauliflower au gratin was watery, possible due to lack of straining required. 6. Pomme frites, heavily over salted, salt granule size excessive. On a positive note: Waitering service 1. Very professional with delivery of wine and food 2.Cleared plates quickly 3. Ensured water glass was not empty 4, Completed billing easily In summary, based on food items order, Phillipe's restaurant fill short of expectation and not at the quality / flair expected of a french restaurant.
Philippe is always a treat to visit
We have been visiting Philippe over the last eight years and it is always a treat to have dinner or drinks and snacks at the bar in this authentic French establishment. The restaurant is very cozy and the food and its presentation is impeccable. It is always lovely to see the same senior team members when we visit. The open plan kitchen and oyster bar offers an opportunity for the guests to enjoy watching the preparation of the beautiful dishes. They have a lovely selection of wines and drinks and offer oysters and champagne at the bar. You can visit for a drink and snacks at the bar after a busy day in CBD. Philippe always exceeds our expectations.
Philippe Mouchel. What a legend.
We had an amazing experience at Philippe on Collins Street. There is something speakeasy when u have to walk into a basement beneath a small fluorescent sign saying Philippe. The staff were exceptional from the moment we entered. Tim ( the maitre’d self proclaimed Grandfather😂) helmed the floor superbly. So so good to see Chef Philippe Mouchel at the pass, checking every dish. We had the Caviar Oscetra, blinis came out warm and the superb staff made sure we had an extra serving of blinis for the exquisite caviar. Canard a la presse. Wow. Get this ancient dish that necessitated Grandfather Tim and Chef Exceptional Philippe to prepare at your table. What a perfect dish. Nasturtium petals were a perfect foil to this rich rich dish. The food was exceptional, with a diverse menu that catered to various tastes. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was artful. The service was top-notch, with attentive staff who made us feel welcome throughout our meal. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, creating the perfect setting for a memorable dining experience. Only 1 star? Food critics….. u know Philippe deserves 2.5
Average effort
Was there early evening to avoid the rush, time established & online feedback gave me great expectations but unfortunately it didn’t live up to it for me, Chechen dish was under cooked, snail were like overcooked, steak wasn’t the best cut of meat, overall the food was average lacking great taste, service was great better.
Absolutely terrible, avoid this place!
There is nothing positive that I can say about this restaurant. Not only was this the worst French restaurant I have ever been to, it was the worst meal I have eaten in a long time. The menu is uninspiring and I actually struggled to find anything that I wanted to eat. I would have walked out, but we were with friends who recommended this place. The food was overpriced and under delivered in every aspect. Most pubs these days can serve up better food than this. The veloute was luke warm and looked like dirty dish water and didn’t taste much better. My wife liked the pork pate, but I thought it was very ordinary and tasteless. It was not pate at all, but rather a bad terrine. This was not worth anywhere near the price of $30 The duck was also tasteless and the jus was watery and tasteless. I can cook better confit duck at home. I only ordered it because it was the only main course that was slightly appealing. The pomme frites were just greasy over cooked chips. These are not the French fries you expect at a French restaurant. There are very few decent wines available by the glass. We were also about to be charged for a desert that never arrived. Wait staff unfriendly and never made us feel welcome. When main courses are $60, I expect something special and the food here is the exact opposite of this. Do yourself a favour and spend your money somewhere else where your patronage is appreciated and food is inspiring, tasty and well cooked
Incredible experience!
Absolutely fantastic. My father and I dined here for an early dinner last night, before going to see Marco Pierre White’s show. Our Tartare and Terrine entrees were absolutely fantastic, the tartare very classic with a seasoned egg yolk atop, which we were encouraged to mix through before hooking in (a good heads up for people who haven’t had classic tartare before). The puffed tendon was a delightfully gamey crunch, and staff were more than happy to answer my million questions as to how it was prepared. The Parisienne gnocchi was soft and silky, with a beautifully soft 64 degree egg that just added more sauciness to an already wonderfully saucy dish! The snails were tender and strong in garlic, not too offensive, great if you’re not spending the evening with a significant other 😂😍 My cocktails (lemon easy x2) were delivered quickly, as were our meals, but not too rushed, we took our time eating and staff were happy to accomodate. And I was delighted to be able to take a picture of the smiling chefs! Thanks a million for such a memorable evening, you sent us off to see Marco Pierre White with bursting palettes and warmed inspiration. Thank you, thank you, thank you! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Ask a Question |
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue? |
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
