Poseidon Restaurant Del Mar Reviews
Think twice! Tom Ranglas hospitality spirit is gone!
After 35 years of being a guest at the Poseidon, I finally have to state that the place is no longer run in the spirit of Tom Ranglas. He would be very sad to find out that the globally well known Greek hospitality is longer present !!! The food is ok (don't expect anything close to a Michelin star), drinks menue below average, service above average (pending individual).

Well, there's definitely a really good outdoor sea view here. And the weather was perfect. The fish in our sandwiches was good. The tomato though on the mahi-mahi sandwich, totally saturated the bone and made it totally fall apart, which is not very comfortable to eat how do you spell soggy SOGGYSOGGGG what a weird experience totally weird. Our server was good. It was not his fault.
Food was average.
The sandwich was soggy. The fish was good . Service was so so . Ambience was fresh sea breeze with bugs .

We were in San Diego for a Marine Corps Vietnam Tankers Reunion. I had to post about my Grandma and Grandpa McKenney's old "Firepit." Any time we're in the area we try to stop in and enjoy a meal. From the friendly wait staff to the beautiful views and great company. There was so much beauty and great stories that I forgot to snap a photo of my entree! I opted for the Surf n' Turf with the Scallops add on. The filet was cooked to perfection. However, I did manage to remember to snap a picture when my Crème Brûlée arrived.
We had lunch there the other day.
my theory is that any restaurant that is near the water usually has the worst most expensive food. I was so delightfully surprised to find this was not the case with Poseidon. I had their seafood cob salad, and my friend had the mahi tacos both were absolutely delicious. The salad came with so much fish. It was unbelievable. I thought the price was extremely fair! Her tacos and the fries were fantastic! The service was a little bit confusing, but in the end, it all worked out well.

Poseidon!!!! What a strong and powerful name, and they absolutely upheld its reputation. The service is exceptional! Its beachside location is stunning! As a first-time visitor, I am thoroughly impressed! We stopped by after the race. We ordered Wagyu sliders (with an additional slider to the standard two-piece serving for the three of us), two servings of local fish ceviche, wine, and cocktails. Their ceviche is outstanding - the best I've had in a long time! I would gladly make a special trip just for their ceviche from now on. The Wagyu sliders were mouthwatering, and Luciano's exceptional service was the highlight! He treated us to a sample of their truffle fries, which was a lovely gesture! We saw him serving truffle fries to the couple at the next table, and when my friend commented on how delicious it looked, Luciano asked if we want to order too but we were already finishing so we didn't. But he came back and brought us a sample as well to enjoy. Such kindness truly elevates the dining experience! Poseidon excels in providing not only exquisite cuisine with a beautiful ocean view but also exceptional hospitality. The staff's warmth and kindness make the dining experience truly enjoyable, leaving you eager to return. Thank you! I look forward to visiting again soon!

When I first moved to this area, Poseidon was one of the regular spots that I patronized. As noted in its name, the business was literally on the beach next to a lifeguard station north of the Powerhouse Park in Del Mar. The waterfront views were at a five star level by itself. If you wanted to park nearby, there were limited metered spots in the lot out front. Most of the spaces were reserved for the valet service. A paid parking lot was available across the street that charged some steep rates. I normally sit at one of the high-top tables across from the bar where one can still see the ocean waves in the distance. Poseidon used to offer a coupon in the monthly mailer that comes to my residence. That has long since been discontinued which was a shame because 20% off your tab was a nice deal. The majority of the items on the bar food menu have remained the same, but the prices have substantially increased. At a recent visit, my pick was the Blackened Fish Sliders. They were served as a pair with french fries on the side. A whitefish fillet was chargrilled and placed inside a brioche bun topped with baby arugula, tomatoes, and tartar sauce. The slider was a nice compact sandwich filled with flavor. The fries were of the shoestring variety that included a cup of ketchup for dipping. The issue was that for two sliders and frites, the cost was $20 which wasn't a good value. Due to the distance, I don't come as often to this part of Del Mar. If I have out of town visitors who want to walk a flat shoreline with gentle waves, then Poseidon on the Beach remains one of the options where I bring them.
Little pricey but food quality, service and amazing beach
Little pricey but food quality, service and amazing beach view makes it worth it. Reservation @ 1030AM but we arrive right before opening. We had outside seating. Paid $8 for valet since it's hard to find parking. Fish and Chips: The fish and chips were great; more flavor in the batter than most places. I wasn't a fan of panko buttered fishes but Poseidon's Panko-herb was different; well seasoned and crunchy crust. 5/5 Maine Lobster Tacos - tender and delicious lobster meat perfectly seasoned with cabbage slaw and dressing. 5/5 Crab cake Bennie - flavorful and crispy crab cake with generous crab meat. I was not asking for too much extender/binder but cake wasn't holding together. It came with perfectly poached egg with a runny yolk, and a rich, creamy hollandaise sauce. Potatoes and asparagus were seasoned well and not overcooked. 4/5 Clam chowder - well seasoned, thick with chewy clams and potato chunks the way we like it. The cheesy biscuit was good too! 5/5 If you're looking for amazing beach view dining with great food; this is the spot. We're be coming back to try their other dishes.

Was here a couple years ago and had to come back to see if it was still as good as I remember. It Was! I made a reservation because it was a holiday weekend. (Highly recommend.) We were seated on the patio with a view of the beach/water. Started with adult brunch bevvies which were quite tasty and a fun way to kick off the holiday weekend / vacay. We had the Mediterranean omelette, Crab Benedict and a fruit bowl. All were tasty and filling! It was a great brunch to enjoy before heading to the racetrack for the day. Our server was lovely and checked on us periodically to make sure we were good. The patio seating plus a drink is exactly what I needed to unwind and relax. The weather was perfect. Will definitely be back again the next time we are in Del Mar.

I came here on a Friday afternoon with a reservation for 12:15 PM. I was seated right away outside with a beautiful view of the ocean and beach. I started with a glass of white wine and the ceviche, which was fresh and flavorful. For my main course, I had the seabass served with vegetables and what I believe was a mashed cauliflower purée - everything was absolutely delicious, and I finished every bite. My friend ordered the fish and chips and really enjoyed it as well. Valet parking is $8 during the day. It did take a few minutes for them to get the car since it's such a small parking lot and they were so busy, but it wasn't too bad. The prices are on the higher side, but worth it for the quality. The service was phenomenal, and I'd definitely recommend this spot.
A Perfect Dinner Celebration and Sunset
My wife and I have lived in nearby Carlsbad for 23 years and we needed to treat our best friends to a dinner and they chose Poseidon. We are so glad that they did !! We had been a couple of times last year and it's always wonderful. The location with an ocean view from everywhere in the restaurant is world class. We had the great good fortune of enjoying the attention of our favorite server....Scott....Our dinner, just 4 days ago could not have been better. From a beautiful seared-rare ahi plate with wonderful sides to an incredible Chilean sea bass plate and an amazing short rib dinner......this was a perfect evening of incredible service, great friends, a world class location and remarkable food. I am happy to leave such a positive review...and if you get the chance to get Scott as your server.....it's a no-brainer....Enjoy
Poseidon is Perfection Personified!
What a wonderful dinner experience. We had a beautiful table on the outside patio with the best server, Jessica. The food was amazing and the ambience even better. Dave, another staff member was delightful. Best restaurant in Del Mar.
Poseidon - A meal and place to go.
The bar experience was made a great experience by the bartender Wade. Excellent bloody Mary's. He also allowed me to receive a fancy tequila decanter that he brought over to me while my wife and I were having dinner.Charming. Our waitress was Tiffany. She was one of the best we have ever had. Chilean Sea bass w/vegetables grilled and filet mignon with assorted vegetables. Bothe meals were excellent. Our experience was worth going there and being on the ocean, the staff and food couldn't ask for any better than this experience. Thank you.
Sunset dinner
Love this place. We sat against where the garage door lifts to expose you to the outside seating deck. Perfect spot. Heaters were on outside which could be felt inside at out seat. Nice! My wife and I are small eaters so we shared an appetizer, salad, and a meal. The service was great and on point. We also enjoyed a hazy beer and a glass of wine for my wife. Reasonable pricing and valet was $10. It’s worth a try,but you can park down the street if your furtunate enough to find a spot. Enjoy! I always enjoy this place.
Spotty service with ok to good food, not worth a return
Nice food with very poor service. Server showed up occasionally only, not following simple requests, and every time we received food a totally different person took care of us, so it was impossible to follow up with orders. The place was only half full but definitely service is not their strong suit. The amazing beach side location totally damaged by spotty service. Not worth a second try.
Overall Great Experience, a bit pricey
Great food, great service and a great view. A bit expensive, but we only visit once a year. Celebrated our 45th anniversary and received a free crème brûlée to share. This was our second time at this restaurant and we plan to return again next year.
Dinner Distraction by Rude Server
Came to eat here after the horse races. It was a very busy night. Our server, Dave, was rude and was a wise guy to many of the guests in my party. This made for an uneasy dinner. He needs to be a bit more professional. Dinner items were very good, but very pricey. Come with money. There is valet parking.
Highly recommend, food and atmosphere great!
Seafood Cobb Salad was amazing, sat on patio overlooking the beach, amazing server Nils, provided wonderful service. 12/10 recommend!
Brunch at Poseidon
overpriced! The regular bloody Mary that I had was quite watered down. I used to be a regular, having brunch there every third week, rotating Poseidon with two other local restaurants. It's the first time I have been back since Covid and their minimal remodel as they started opening at 11:00 instead of 10:00 for brunch. There are much better choices in Jakes, Sbicca, West End, and American just to name a few.
