Raku MacDougal Street New York Reviews from The Last Year
My friend got us a reservation for Tuesday at 7:30pm and we
My friend got us a reservation for Tuesday at 7:30pm and we were seated promptly around that time. The udon is as good as the hype makes it to be, would definitely come back if the line isn't too long.
absolutely delicious.
the fried chicken was perfect and the sauce was addicting. we tried theee different udon dishes and they were all amazing! best udon i've ever had. definitely coming back. the restaraunt is big, but they have a wait since people are coming in and out all the time. it is a very nice place, the waiters are nice. definitely come try their udon!
Probably one of my favorite spots in NYC I've tried so far.
Came here on a Saturday about ten minutes after they opened. The line was pretty long. Got quoted about a 30-45min wait for table. Ended up being about 45min which was fine to walk around the area (lots of shopping stores and stuff to peruse while you wait). Once we got seated my wife and I ordered the spicy niku, chicken tatsuta-age, and zaru (cold udon) with shrimp tempura. Everything was great! The spicy niku was good and I like all the different types of beef (I.e. tendons) that were in it. I also thought the udon noodles were especially good in these (extremely good bounce and chew to it). The cold udon was also great, but my wife and I both agreed the noodles were absolute perfection in the spicy niku. That being said, cold noodles were nice and refreshing on a hot nyc summer day. The only thing that was just okay was the chicken tatsuta-age. It was solid, but not stand out compared to other chicken karage dishes at other spots. My wife wasn't super big fan of breading, but I thought it was fine. I'd probably save that money for an extra dish or dessert though. Overall, really enjoyed this spot. Service was enjoyable. Main dining room area is very nicely decorated and this place is great for a date night or groups of 2-4. Bigger groups I'd def recommend trying to get a resy or just being patient. Only other small comment though I'd say was the bathrooms were kind of smelly/dirty(?). I think the smell was mostly because the ingredient supply room is also downstairs near the bathroom. Not sure if I think that set up is the most cleanly, but I still didn't find it detracted from my overall experience. I'd definitely come back again.
Excellent place and deserves all the great ratings.
The broth of all the bowls we ordered was absolutely terrific in taste, the udon was perfect in texture and the overall experience was really good. Lovely ambience with attentive service and a very cozy setting. Definitely coming here again and such a good place for Udon and more...
Absolutely great udon.
I had the clam udon and I loved everything about the broth and the chew of the noodles. My partner had the beef udon and also really enjoyed it. Would definitely go back. We made reservations and were seated promptly
walked in around 5:15pm on the weekday.
we waited an hour and a half. the place has no waiting area inside so we had to wait outside which was extremely hot. we appreciated that they offer cold water in their patio. once we got seated and ordered it took a while for us to get the food (15-20 min). the fried chicken was 4/5. it could be crispier, but it was hot and juicy. the sauce was the best part! it was spicy and citrusy. the niku udon was alright 3/5. the broth was flavorful but more on the saltier side. they only gave a few chunks of meat, some were kind of fatty. the tendon and tripe tasted more gamey compared to those in pho. i wish there was more meat given the steep price of the dish. the udon part was the best part! it was very chewy. I was most impressed by the bowl used and how it kept the noodles steaming hot all the way until the end of my meal. towards the end of our meal the waiter kept on checking in on us to ask if we were done/ready to pack even as we were still having our drinks. i felt like we were being rushed to finish up. not sure if i will come back as I've had comparable udon at lower cost e.g. Marugame
The food here was excellent and so was the service.
The restaurant was well lit and interior layout was very welcoming. Came as a party of 5 and got to try a variety of udons and apps. We were recommended the following udons: buta shabu (pork belly cold udon), ebiten (shrimp tempura hot udon), niku (beef hot udon), and kamonan (duck breast hot udon). Every recommendation was excellent and delicious. Each soup had their own unique taste and the noodles were just the right bounce! After having Raku's udon, I completely get the hype behind this place. It lives up to it! We also had agedashi tofu and chicken tatsuta-age for apps which were also delicious. Pro tip: get the chili oil for the udon!
Came here with some friends for walk in.
I highly recommend either booking a reservation or putting your name down and going to a cafe nearby to kill time. (Our wait for 4 was an hour but there's some lovely cafes in the area!) They'll send you a text when your table is ready. Service was great and they came to refill our waters frequently. We ordered the snow crab udon in thick egg drop soup and the duck breast udon soup. This particular dish's soup has a VERY, goopy thick egg drop soup, so if you don't like that kind of texture, you won't enjoy this. I prefer cold udon but their cold options were a bit limited so I didn't order from that menu. I still enjoyed my dish and it was very filling! My friend enjoyed his duck breast udon soup and it comes in a nice, looking pot like a cauldron. The food was good but I wasn't blown away as I've had better udon places. Worth a visit if you particularly like hot udon soups.
I do not like udon noodles and this place is amazing.
Their noodles taste fresh and the broth flavors are exceptional. Big servings. Rich flavors. I get the Tantan for a spicy, peanut flavor - it's amazing.
Food was not good.
The soup base was very salty and the protein in the udon was very little. The service was the worst part. The waiters took 20 mins to take my order and was unfriendly the whole times Would not go back. Save your time and money and try Tsurutontan instead.

The food and ambiance here was delicious and cozy and perfect for a cold day. I had the spicy raku udon. The noodles were the perfect amount of chewy and the length was perfect. The short ribs were so good. And the broth was so good I want more already. The staff were so quick and made the experience so seamless. I've heard such great things and it definitely delivered!

I had a prior appointment nearby and was happy to see the Raku was nearby. I've only tried the east village location to compare but for the most part they seem to be on par with quality. (I do prefer the East Village one however) I came around 1pm on a Thursday and had no wait for my solo lunch date. The service was quick and prompt with suggestions and taking my order. I originally wanted the chawanmishu but was told it takes 20 min to make so I ultimately went with the servers suggestion of the agedashi tofu. The tofu pieces were so silky and had a good bite to it, and there was enough bonito flakes to complement the tofu! I also got the ebitan udon for the tempura. The udon noodles were fresh and had a good chew to it and the broth had a lot of depth, though I did feel like adding a lot of spicy flakes to it. The tempura was not too oily and lightly crisped! To end it all, they gave out frozen grapes with the checks which were soo good after the meal!
Worth the wait and lives up to the anticipation.
The fact that they have a larger assortment than most ramen or udon restaurants really appealed to me. Great beginnings that improved the overall experience. Our main courses were the yaki stir fry for me and the tantan udon for my wife. It was sufficient to sate our hunger for a late dinner and a light lunch the following day. In this Soho neighborhood, there are a lot of excellent restaurants to choose from, so this one should be at the top of your list, particularly if you're craving noodles but not Italian.
Best udon in the world
They have the best udon ever! I took my dad who was visiting from Korea and he loved it that we went three times within two weeks of our NYC stay. Service was fast and all the staffs were super nice. We recommend chicken tatsuta-age which is a fried chicken appetizer, niku udon, ebiten udon, and yasai kakiage. It may not look like it but portion was also huge that we were so full after our meal. We had reservations for two of out visits but we were also able to sit right away when we went right when they opened.
We made reservations through Resy for Saturday night dinner.
They have a 10 minute grace period if you are running late. And you are notified via text when your table is ready. We sat at a nice booth in the back of the restaurant that comfortably seated 4. Restrooms are downstairs and well maintained. Points awarded for clean restrooms, as it means they take pride in all areas of the restaurant. For apps we ordered their Chicken Tatsuta-age, and Chawanmushi. The Tatsuta-age comes in either 6 or 10 pieces. We opted for 10 and were pleasantly surprised by how juicy the chicken was. We were forewarned that the chawanmushi would take about 35 minutes to prepare. It was worth the wait, and I do not usually think any food is worth a lengthy wait. For udon - we ordered the Gyunan, Nishin, Kamonan, and Curry. All were delicious in their own ways. They come out from the kitchen nice and hot. The noodles are handmade and plentiful in each bowl. Will be back and do recommend. A must try for anyone in NY.
We stopped by for lunch after a visit to the color factory
We stopped by for lunch after a visit to the color factory and had a wait of about 45 minutes for 2 people at around 1 pm on a Saturday afternoon (not bad!). Note that they are strict about outside food or beverage, so we had to toss the Starbucks that we picked up while waiting for our table. Most of the tables are communal so we were wedged between two groups of people, one of which was talking about how this is the best udon in the city. Given that this is the first udon that I've had in the city I cannot definitively make that declaration, however it was good enough that I probably won't try it anywhere else. I had the nabeyeki which was a huge portion that gave me the chance to try a few different things - chicken, sea eel, fish cake, shiitake mushroom, sansai, egg - with shrimp tempura on the side. HIghly recommend this option! Flavorful broth, perfectly cooked noodles... drooling thinking about it!
Hands down the best udon I've had in my life.
The texture of the noodle was so chewy and soft. Almost like mochi. The broth really hit the spot. The chicken was so crunchy and paired well with the sauce they served. Almost like spicy mayo with hit of vinegar.
This Japanese food was fantastic and it taste really great.
The Udon noodless taste really delicious and broth was rich in flavor. It has good amount of noodles. The texture was great too. The Chicken was really tasty and has good crunch. The place has homey vibe and it feels like dining in Japan. The sushi was so delicious and fresh. The server was nice very friendly. Good prices of food.
Waiter was amazing.
I asked for whatever the most popular thing is under $25 and they gave me the best udon I've had in my life. Honestly so good.
Best Udon I've had in NYC! The noodles itself are perfectly
Best Udon I've had in NYC! The noodles itself are perfectly chewy and slightly firm, without getting soggy in the broth for the whole duration of the meal (like udon noodles often do). I had Curry Udon, and the broth was a great balance between dashi broth and curry and went so well together with the beef and spinach toppings. The portion is big and they also have a wide range of toppings you can add. I've been to Tsurutontan (another popular udon spot in NYC) a few times and for me Raku is the clear winner! No reservation, but there are so many fun bars in the area that you can pop into for a drink while you wait.
stellar udon but i'd say a litttooo overhyped.
we got in line right before opening and only had to wait a bit. karaage was SO fire and juicy and crispy! i got a simple udon and could really taste the freshness of the noodles, they were so crispy and qq. tempura was beautiful but just aight.
Food YES. Hostess NO.
I wanna say that the food was GREAT. The tastes are authentic and mouth watering. Service was alright. But the hostess needs replacing. She was rude, stressed and didn’t have the reservation list under control. It got messed up and the people that arrived later WITHOUT a reservation got seated first while we had to wait. She first said to us: 45 min wait. Sure. Not a problem. 45 minutes turned into 2+ hours. Only stayed because my friend really wanted to eat here. We specifically requested a table inside. Got asked if we were ok taking a table outside after 1.5 hours wait time. I knew she accidentally gave away our table. Again, food amazing. Hostess needs to go.
Raku
When the aroma of Raku's Niku Udon first hits my nostrils, I am drawn to it like a crack fiend to a lit crack spoon. I immediately get transported to a hole in the wall noodle shop in Kyoto that is playing lofi bangers that Shazam can't pick up. Deep cuts only. I came here alone on my lunch break today as on a cold rainy day, my heart, mind, and soul immediately go to a Raku meal. This is a fantastic place for a solo meal to just come and enjoy your own company... while we are on the topic I get so annoyed when people be posting about how they are going on solo meals. Like can't you just go do that and not post about it? Was it really a solo meal if you gotta tell everyone about it?..... Well I guess I'm doing that now just in Yelp form ahahaha damn. The Niku Udon's spice level is just enough to make your nostrils run and let out one of those quick little "woooo" breaths out of your mouth, which is my idyllic spice level. The voluminous bowl, which consists of a light flavorful broth, silk noodles, beef short-rib, nori sansho chili oil, tendon, and honeycomb tripe is my hangover cure. Well that and a couple puffs of a pre-roll but that's neither here nor there. I let out an audible "wow" on my final sip of the broth, as my soul needed it. My soul been hella tired lately idk why. My only complaint is that $27 before tax and tip is just steep. It can't be a weekly occurrence for me, as much as I would like it to. Once a quarter vibes smh. But that just seems to be the price of doing business these days in New York. I've spent $27 a lot worse...... Still my favorite rainy day meal in NYC. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__
Far better than expectations - lives up to its hype
I am always skeptical of soup. Raman is tasty but often doesn't live up to its hype. Raku has too many happy reviews for me to expect anything good. However, I was wrong - the hot udon with beef was amazing. The umami flavor was wonderful. We also had the pressed mackerel sushi and it didn't need any soy sauce. Dipping it a little did add some depth to the overall flavor. The uni canapes reminded me that I don't really like sea urchin. However, if you are a fan, they were enjoyed by others at the table. I hope to go back and try the udon again.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.
Worked perfectly, thank you!
This is a crazy holiday season in NYC and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that AppointmentTrader works! Will be using again!

Worked so well! I was a bit nervous, but everything went very smoothly. purchased the reservation, and got into the restaurant seamlessly.
Love this app!
So glad I came across this app :)
Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal
So easy and had a prime time which I can never seem to get on normal res apps. So worth it
Got impossible NYC res
instead of waiting weeks I got my 4 charles reservation instantly
Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
