A Visit To The Bar at RAO’s Harlem
Well we didn’t have a reservation of course but my sister and I just wanted to stop in and sit at the bar for a short time. I was hoping to still get the fell of what I have heard for years. It worked. We stayed for about 30 minutes and talked to the manager at the bar and he was very nice and so much fun to talk to. Unfortunately all the tables were full, and that night just wasn’t our night. I did leave with a Rao’s Harlem shirt and I told the manager I would be back for dinner one day. I promise there will be a review when that happens. For now I’ll just keep going to the Miami location every time I get a chance until my sister who lives in NYC makes it happen.
Be the first to ReplyVery average and overpriced
In the middle of summer, the tomato and mozzarella salad is made with underripe tomatoes and an oil that's either the cheapest olive oil possible or canola oil. The orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe are a very large portion of about the same quality as anywhere else, just much more expansive. Same for the veal parmaggiano, which doesn't even come with pasta. The small portion of cheesecake arrived without the berries mentioned on the menu. Considering the hundreds of Italian restaurants in the city, there's no good reason to order from Rao's. (this was a takeout order)

I actually had extremely low expectations for takeout at Raos but decided to try anyways because of the famous name and window of opportunity for takeout during the pandemic. I thought for sure a lot of the fanfare about this place was about the exclusivity of getting a table and would be mostly hype but this was not so. The food was simply fantastic. The Shrimp Parm might be the best Shrimp Parm I’ve ever tasted. The meatballs were soft and tasty throughout but especially in the center. And the lemon chicken was unique. Definitely I plan to order takeout again.

Be the first to ReplyGo for the scene, not for the food.
Back in the 1970s, when I first visited Rao's, it was an interesting time, largely due to the folks who frequented the place. The Christmas lights were always on display and Frankie Pellegrino, the owner, came by to sit at your table and discuss the various menu options. The food used to be quite good.
Fast forward to today, some things have changed. For one thing, the building is a reproduction of what used to be there. There was a fire and it was rebuilt. For another, Frankie passed away a few years ago. Nicky the Vest, Rao's legendary bartender, is still there. These days he walks around rather than spending much time making drinks.
It'll still a scene, primarily because you can only get in if you've been a long-time patron and remember to keep going regularly. If so, you'll be greeted warmly and treated well. If that's not the case, you needn't be concerned since you can't just call and make a reservation. No problem. You really won't be missing much any more.
Meatballs
Impossible to get a reservation . Harder than impossible actually. But get there. Grew up in Italian family. Gravy every Sunday. Raos wins best meatball on earth. Thanks

Unbelievably bad visit. They were rude, pompous, disrespectful and non-caring. Their old reputation when Frank P was running things is now just a memory. Don't bother going there, plus their NY location is in a bad neighborhood.

Don’t think about eating there unannounced. This should be CLEARLY stated on the Places/Map description that they do Not accept walk in diners but I guess the world is supposed to know.
They were very rude and had an attitude when my family and I walked in expecting to have lunch at what is supposedly a restaurant.
A Dream Dashed . . . So, Too, the Dish
After decades wanting to experience Rao’s legendary restaurant in New York, I have at long last accomplished my goal. Well, I can’t yet say that I have actually been seated at a table there, but I have had “carry-out.” Tonight I feasted on pasta served with Rao’s famous Bolognese Sauce. Truth be known, what I had was not actually “carry out” from the 114th Street location . . . the Mrs. Miller’s pasta came from Krogers and the Rao’s Bolognese Sauce came from Fresh Market at a lofty price of $9/jar. What I experienced was, in a way, not just “jarred sauce”, but “jarring.” By that I mean “dreadful.” Bolognese is the “standard” by which I benchmark Italian restaurants. Most Italian poseurs serve meat-infused Marinara, few know the glories of authentic Bolognese Sauce. By any measure, this bottled swill is neither authentic, nor is it good. Perhaps not “carry out,” but they do put their name on the jar.
I ask you: Would you go to a dining establishment called Marie Callender’s after sampling their frozen chicken pot pie? Why, then, Rao’s?
