Red Ash Austin Reviews
Great service.
Great vibes. Great food. It's expensive and needs a reservation, but it was pretty easy to book. For my bday weekend, my sister picked one fancy restaurant Friday night, and I picked one Saturday night. My pick was Red Ash, and my pick won by a landslide. Also, Red Ash comped my bday dessert and the other place didn't, AND we were seated in the best spot to watch the chefs in the kitchen all night. It was like watching Top Chef at home! We got the Wood roasted vine tomatoes and burrata (incredible), bone marrow and mushroom risotto (even more incredible), and another pasta dish that I don't remember, but it was tasty -- just not as tasty as the other items. The portion sizes were also great. My nephew, a soon to be teen boy who can put away a ton of food, and the two of us adults were sated. For dessert, we had the hot apple crostata. Absolutely recommend it if you generally like apple pie, which I do. If you can make it to this spot, do it!
As a local dining guide, I found the food at Red Ash to be
As a local dining guide, I found the food at Red Ash to be truly exquisite and the atmosphere to be equivalent to, if not better than, some of my memories dining in Manhattan. Every dish had an abundance of flavor; however, the dining experience is not ideal for a date night, as many dishes are family portioned and not suitable for couples. We dined on a Saturday night and the restaurant was very lively. Service was impeccable, with multiple bussers and food runners across the team keeping things moving with frequent checkpoints, though with how busy things were, there wasn't much time to chat with guests (which is understandable for their peak night). Forest, our waiter, touched the table at all the right times and struck a rare balance of professionalism and fun -- it was clear he had years of great experience. A special shout-out to Ivana, a food runner, who brought such kind energy to our table and took a moment to chat with us. That said, I was surprised that at no point during the evening did any manager come by our table. One area where I can see improvement is with the wood-fired aged meats. All cuts are priced by the ounce ($4.75/oz) and we were excited to try them, but the steak we originally wanted had a 40oz minimum -- far too much for most couples to consider. A 30oz cut was the smallest available, which was delicious but still not approachable for two people looking to try a variety of items on the menu. I've also heard from other guests that it's nearly impossible to get a reservation (we didn't personally face that challenge, and are thankful, but many say it's an issue). I often book day-of reservations for clients and I imagine this would pose a challenge. Combined with the portion sizes and a $350 bill for two people, I'm not sure if we'd return. Overall, Red Ash is a lively restaurant with outstanding food. I'd recommend it for groups or celebrations, but for couples, it is not ideal.
We went here for our anniversary and it was everything we
We went here for our anniversary and it was everything we were told it was. I understand the month out wait for reservations. We got the fried squash blossoms and they were so delicate and creamy on the inside as well as they roasted tomatoes and burrata with a side of the Italian bread. The acidity of the tomatoes and the creaminess of the burrata were a perfect combination. For our mains we got the tagliatelle allรก bolognese and it was incredibly flavorful, obviously the pasta was perfectly Al dente and the sauce had so much depth. The only thing keeping it from a 5 was our waiter, we think maybe he was sick so maybe that's why he left us for so long, but we didn't get dessert because by the time he came back to us after giving us our food it had been so much time that we needed the check and couldn't wait anymore to get home to our babysitter.
there's a reason this is the best italian restaurant.
incredible wine selection, perfectly cooked steaks, great pasta and the service is otherworldly. the ambiance and lighting is intimate and clean. no complaints about it here.
Amazing food! Service is not the same standard we expected
Amazing food! Service is not the same standard we expected from their sister restaurant, J Carvers, but still better than most. A great date night experience.
So loud not enjoyable.
Food was good but hard to talk to then people at your table because of the noise.
Phoenix rising! Making a homecoming to my favorite kitchen
Phoenix rising! Making a homecoming to my favorite kitchen in Austin and graced by a rare but privileged seat at the Chef's counter, I was able to feel included in the peaceful but lively kitchen headed by Tayjon Shaffer, perhaps explaining my best experience in years since Carver has moved onto expanding (next to explore: The Kimberly). The dishes that have me hooked and keep me coming back (loyal since 2019) with notes: Wood Roasted Vine Tomatoes & Burrata - From the grill comes perfectly charred Italian bread under a mound of exquisite burrata (squeaky taut exterior with milky cheese curds) that blends harmoniously with torn basil, garlic, wood-fired tomatoes and rich balsamic. It's a Caprese party in my mouth! This may come as a surprise, but their Wood Grilled Beef Filet (Fred Linz flown in from Chicago) - moderately priced compared to others on the menu, but has and always will be one of my favorite steaks ever (U.S. and Buenos Aires included!). Perfect sear creates a slight crust (I take mine red on the inside) with peppercorn snap and their signature roasted shallot butter - magical. That and meticulous oversight on the grill by Erick Vasques, unrivaled. My favorite thing - handmade pastas in half-portions to share and pair as sides. The Potato Gnocci "Gratinata" is my dream of mac'n cheese - caramelized Gorgonzola and prosciutto laden over potato pillows of pasta, I die. Eventually I'll come back to earth, but while in Rome (via Austin), I love to finish with the Molten Chocolate Cake - more like a rich chocolate custard with a melted peanut butter center, light fior de latte gelato for a clean contrast. Of beverages, their wine list is deep and refined, with a generous selection by the glass, many varietals for pairing at every course. Espresso to finish! It's wood-fired Italian, elevated.
Not much else to say that hasn't been said, but it did NOT
Not much else to say that hasn't been said, but it did NOT disappoint and lead up to the hype. We can't wait to go back and try more dishes. We got 2 apps, 2 pastas, and a meat dish. Both apps were fantastic...squash blossoms and proscuitto...great portions as well. Hubby about died over the bread and garlic/shallot butter....The truffle pasta dish was our fav out of the 2 we ordered as the sauce was so flavorful yet light. The meat was cooked perfectly and had the same shallot butter and was melt in your mouth...can't wait to go back!
The food was delicious.
Both the crab pasta and the seafood pasta had a generous amount of linguine and seafood. One of my clams was closed (you can't eat a clam if it doesn't open up as it means it was dead before it was caught and can make you sick.) I was a little surprised that they didn't notice that, but they brought me a little cup of extra clams to make up for it which I appreciated. But I have to remove one star for the ambiance. We told them in advance that it was our anniversary dinner and very special. While they gave us a card which was a nice touch we were seated right next to another couple and the loud kitchen. It was truly disappointing as it took away the romantic aspect. We were seated so close to the couple next to us, it was as if we were dining with them. There was zero privacy to speak and on the other side was the loud and hot kitchen. I was quite disappointed they didn't seat us upstairs or anywhere else where we weren't on another couples lap. It was 8:30 on a Wednesday so you'd think they could accommodate for a special event.
I had the pleasure of eating here this last Saturday and
I had the pleasure of eating here this last Saturday and this is the 3rd time I had dinner at Red Ash. I will say the grilled sourdough and burrata appetizer is really second to none. If you like a garlicky, perfectly toasted piece of bread with your burrata...look no further. Also had the short rib special and that was very nice as well. I do not eat out often due to salt content and this place is no exception. This place is good but there are A LOT of good restaurants in Austin. I do not know why this place is so hard to get a reservation. You will also not get sat until the very minute of your reservation so if you are thinking you will get there early and have a drink...DON'T! You will stand, awkwardly in front of the entrance door with a group that thought they would have a drink too. The bar also needs a reservation so there is no social aspect to this except eating and conversing with the party you are having dinner with. This may be the new normal after Covid but it reminds of why people are so unhappy now. Staff is friendly however. This place is a good restaurant, just not a great one.
Hype
Dang it. Red Ash crushed it. I mean, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. We have been passionate supporters of Vespaio for over two decades and it has always been out special date night/celebration spot. Now the conundrum is when we are downtown, where do we go to get Italian. Ash has stepped up big time. If we can get in. More about that later. Red Ash is the hottest ticket in town and we can see why. I was fortunate to score an early 5.15pm reservation on a Friday. This was after trying for 2 months to book a time. The trick here was I just randomly logged on their website thursday prior to our birthday celebration and there was a time available. So I grabbed it. However, some intel, I would say if you get there at 4.45pm and don't mind being seated at the bar and there are two of you, I feel you will be in luck. However, they do want to turn those spaces every 1.5hrs. Anyway, all that aside. What did we eat? OCTOPUS A LA PLANCHA, FRUTTI DI MARE, CHARRED SWEET CORN RISOTTO "GRATINATA, HOT AND CRISPY COUNTRY ITALIAN BREAD, WOOD ROASTED MEATBALLS and TAGLIATELLE ALLA BOLOGNESE. Complete and total overkill. No way we could eat all this. I could go through each of these nosh buckets of food, but we would be here for awhile. I'll just hit the highlights. Octopus: Full sucker covered tentacles, nicely charred, tender and seasoned perfectly. Tender, like someone who understands you need to spend time with octopus to get this tender and delicious. I plowed through them before I had time to take a photo. Bread: Just get this. Bread flown in just for the restaurant, deserves to be in your tummy. Loads of garlic, butter and crunchy texture and loads of it. Frutti: Who doesn't like a perfectly grilled lobster tail, shrimp, bunches of clams/mussels on a bed of homemade squid ink and white pasta. Well my spouse, she's allergic to shell fish that's who. Me, not so much allergic. Here's the difference from the Cioppino dishes I have enjoyed in the past. The sauce. Ash's broth/sauce was not overburdened with tomato paste/juice. It was balanced and subtle, allowing all the seafood to blend with the broth and not having the broth be taste forward. Risotto: Yeah, get this. Barely was able to get but a couple of spoonfuls in me, but it was even better the next day. Sweet, fresh and bright with a loose risotto. Corn lovers delight. Balls: Wow, here the broth/tomato sauce was hearty and blended with the perfectly cooked meatballs. The meatballs themselves, had to be a combination of perhaps beef/pork. Nice soft polenta rounded out the dish. Bolognese: As with everything here, fresh pasta, loving prepared gently simmered bolognese hit the mark. It was everything Suzie wanted and better then mine. I got nothing more to add, great execution and perfect pasta dinner. Along with an amazing space to have a restaurant, our server Amanda was epic. Around when we needed her, informative of the menu and what she liked and was able to provide detailed information about every dish we asked about. Perfect knowledge of their wine list and paired our meal perfectly. She even brought us a little birthday surprise afters for Suzie. She packed up all our leftovers for later. She is a industry professional with the restaurant from the very beginning. Ask for her, she's a gem.
Must try Italian spot!
This place was amazing. We didnโt have reservations but they were able to squeeze us in. Valet $15, but street parking was available. We chose the garlic bread flown in from NY for appetizers. We also did the bolognese, spaghetti, aged steak from Chicago, side of potatoes (amazing) and broccolini. Needless to say we indulged and lots of leftovers. The pastas as half or whole sizes and the sides are family style. Hope this helps!
Epic Dinner
We have been trying to get into Red Ash for almost 2 years now. I can say it was worth the wait! We had a wide variety of dishes that we shared. The standouts were the Halibut, Steak, and Blue Crab pasta. All were amazing. The carpaccio and burrata appetizers were also amazing. The service was nice but our red wine was served WAY too cold. It took about 45 min to warm up. There are some downsides you should be aware of: The place is relatively small and quite loud. There is no place to sit at the bar for a drink. You can stand in the corner and get served, I believe. So don't come early. We would return for sure.
Exceptional experience
Excellent cocktails. Superb wine list . Exceptional quality of ingredients in well prepared food of international Michelin star standard . The service from arriving to departing was top notch!
Best Steak in Austin... Maybe Anywhere!
Wow! I heard this was good, but this was REALLY GOOD! The wood-fired steak melted in your mouth. The handmade pasta was fresh, slight chew, and well-done. This is a great restaurant-- if you can get in. We made reservations 3 months in advance.
Excellent.
I enjoyed the clams and bone marrow. Will definitely go back to try more of their food. I did feel cramped and could hear every conversation to the left and right of me because we were jammed together so that really needs to be remedied.

I came out of retirement for this post! Been active here for a long time, but Covid kinda dampened my spirit to go out... it happens. Went here a bit ago and have been meaning to drop a review so here we go. Food - 9 Atmosphere - 8. It's a little noisy and little smokey, but that means it's busy and they are cooking old school. Not terribly bad things depending on the occasion Service - 11 (out of 10) I have been out a lot in this town and I'm always shouting out Red Ash as the best Italian. I've been to J. Carver too and it's tops. I'm the ultimate stickler when it comes to service and this place blows me away. Oscar was my guy for a long time, but I gotta hand it to Emma, she really throws down! Great recs, great personality, you could tell everyone was having a good time and she was in her element. Don't know if y'all read these or not, but If she's not in charge she needs to be. Or head of training or something. More places in this town could use an asset like her. Keep up the good work everybody!

Waited a year to get a reservation and sadly we were SO disappointed. Food was average at best. Caesar salad was one of the worst I've ever had. Romaine stalks with a barely there dressing topped with Melba toast crackers that they call "croutons". Pastas were dry and nothing special, chicken dish was fine. For the cost $$$$ would not come back here again.

This is my friend's favorite restaurant in Austin and she wanted to treat me for my birthday. The staff all signed a card for me and I got a free dessert! I got the cream-filled doughnuts and chocolate sauce. I ordered the Bishop's Hats and found them pretty good, but the sides are what made me want to come back for more. The corn risotto, crispy Italian bread, and potatoes were DELICIOUS. Our waiter was so attentive, the design of the restaurant is absolutely stunning, and the food portions were decently sized. Highly recommend for a celebration dinner or date night.
The food really yummy 6 start if I could.
Service clean and great. Love the potatoes from here. Just don't love how some of the cooks look dirty, and how the waitresses drink during the job or while closing with the male employees. Armando, a former employee would be involved with all the girls at this establishment while he had a baby on the way. He also sold me and other customers & employees fake jewelry!
Happy to check this Italian restaurant for the first time!
Happy to check this Italian restaurant for the first time! They were closed for months due to a fire in Sept 2023. They are known for their fresh handmade pastas and they also have steak. The pastas we got are all super delicious but the standout for me was the tagliolini with fresh blue crab. It was a perfect mixture of sweet, salty, sour, with a hint of spice. Don't forget dessert! We got tiramisu-I felt that there is too much cream on it, but it was still enjoyable. I was so full that we took it to-go. The server packed it up for us in a container and bag! I like the layout of the space and that I can see the upstairs from below. Great place with delicious food, perfect for a date or a celebration! Make reservations early because only 9 PM options are available until September. (I made a reservation for Red Ash 3 months ago.)

7-8-24 We chose to go to Red Ash for our 34th Anniversary dinner having dined here once before. They were shut down for a bit due to a fire, but reopened and we wanted to try out the reopened restaurant. The restaurant is located in downtown Austin, so parking can be challenging, BUT, Red Ash offers a valet service for its dining guests. We chose to go full experience - appetitizers, main course and of course, dessert. We chose the Pear Salad and Meatballs as a starter, then chose the Osso Bucco Mulanese and Frutti di Mare as our main course, and chose Tiramisu as our dessert. While the food was the star of this experience, our server, Joshua, was absolutely amazing and took very good care of us. The Pear Salad was wonderful - it had a lite dressing that was very refreshing. The meatball was also amazing, and we chose not to finish it all so we could partake in the other courses. Our main courses arrived and they were amazing. The Osso Bucco was so tender, you could pull it off the bone with just a fork. The Frutti di Mare was filled with shrimp and lobster along with what could only be described as homemade pasta - all of which was delicious. And to top it off, we had champagne and tiramisu as our final course. Well, the dining experience was 5 stars. This restaurant is very popular, so reservations are a must. If you are looking for a 5 star experience, definitely give this place a try.
Another visit to Red Ash and another fantastic experience.
Food was outstanding and the service exceptional. Gold standard of a dining experience without question.
One of the best restaurants I've had ever.
I tried dishes that I would normally never even think about (they do come with a price tag) but so worth it. Book wayyyy in advance because this place is insanely good and everyone knows it.
Snagged a last minute reservation on OpenTable at the bar.
Our server/bartender was very nice, helpful when it came to helping my vegan boyfriend find options. He wasn't originally coming with me but my sister couldn't make it. We knew the menu did not denote vegan options so we hoped they would accommodate. The bread can be vegan without the spread they add and olive/oil and balsamic instead. For entree spaghetti with no cheese and the vegetable platter. He wasn't very hungry and only ordered the veggie platter. Listen I know it sounds insane to just order veggies but they actually were very good seasoned well. Not many options for vegans but it is what it is. For myself I ordered the Snapper Crudo, very good & light. The bread with garlic spread was amazing and finished with the Agnolotti Alla Piemontese which had a nice truffle taste. Place was cute interior, very loud and lively.
''One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop...and devote our attention to eating.''
We had a brilliant dinner at Red Ash Italia, starting with roasted vine tomatoes and burrata, followed by red snapper crudo and wood-roasted bone marrow. Though we are men and not rabbits, we shared a caesar salad before diving into handmade pasta and the โCostataโ 50-day dry-aged tomahawk ribeye. The pace of service was well executed; we ate well and somehow did not overindulgeโat least that's what we tell ourselves. This place was booked for the rest of the month long before we thought to make a reservation, but the concierge staff worked their magic. It might be best to plan ahead just in case. Brilliant dinner, will go again. This was a meal that epitomized the words of Luciano Pavarotti when he wrote, "One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating."
Exceptional in every aspect, this establishment truly sets
Exceptional in every aspect, this establishment truly sets the bar high for dining experience. From the exquisite cuisine to the impeccable service and the captivating ambiance, everything is simply flawless. I am still amazed at how knowledgeable our server was, he's an absolute stud.
Wonder
Best Italian Steakhouse ever. Donโt miss the bone morrow. Chef is wonderful, overseas all food as it prepared and before it is served. Food is fantastic and service is great. A bit loud, but itโs everyone talking about their food. Temporary closed but set to reopen soon, canโt wait. Reservations a must.
I've been there twice (before it closed due to fire).
The food is excellent, and in another environment I would frequent it, especially if it were more accessible-- without reserving a table months in advance. Some of the tables are crammed together making it seem a bit claustrophobic and overcrowded. The noise level is very high, making conversation difficult. And the stench of smoke is pervasive, even out on the street. The service is excellent. The best thing about it is that it is just around the corner from the best cocktail bar in Austin.
The food here was phenomenal.
Came with a large group of coworkers and we all enjoyed our meals and shared appetizers. The wine selection and cocktails were also top notch. The Tagliolini with blue crab was out of this world. It is quite loud and crowded in the dining area, but the atmosphere and decor are fun.
We love this place for a special occasion.
Service is always great and the food is amazing
This place is amazing but so hard to get reservations.
Book early! Everything I had from appetizer, shared meals and dessert was awesome.

I kept hearing about Red Ash and decided to make a reservation and wait the 3 months because of the amazing things people were saying about . Let me say that it DID NOT DISAPPOINT! The ambience was classy and romantic and the wood fire grill was fun to watch as the chefs cooked multiple beautiful dishes in it. The drinks and appetizers are a preview of how amazing your meal will be. We got the garlic bread and meatballs, which melted in your mouth. My husband said the filet mignon steaks were "the best he's ever had" and has since compared others to Red Ash and how they don't live up to them. We will definitely be returning. Wait the 3 months... it's SO worth it!
Excellent food and service.
Always enjoy it. Always crowded so make a reservation. Beautiful environment.
Always amazing.
MUST - the tomato's and burrata. This is my favorite thing on the menu hands down. Absolutely incredible. Meatballs as well! So juicy and truthfully the best I've ever had. Everything at red ash is good. You will not go wrong with anything in there menu. Pasta wise - gnocchi is the 1st I'd recommend then rigatoni alla campagnola Espresso martinis are delicious also! Looking forward for them to be back in business!
Great food, always crowded.
Noisy, but fun! It's well-worth the price and the wait! I've been here many times and always had a great dinner!
Best meal in Austin? Absolutely.
Visited on a Thursday night without a reservation, but lucked into a table - highly recommend booking ahead! Started with the hot and crispy country Italian bread, which was good but skippable if you're watching carbs. Red snapper crudo: Incredible! The smoked trout roe and sauce took it to another level. A definite must-order. Thin sliced beef carpaccio: Another must-order, with the horseradish crema providing the perfect kick. Each bite was delicious. Tagliatelle alla bolognese: Freshly made pasta that hits the spot just right! Wild red snapper: A must for fish lovers, with delicious veggies and a fantastic broth. Lamb Shank Braised: The sleeper hit! Fall-off-the-bone lamb, perfectly paired risotto, and a mint gremolata that made it exceptional. Incredible staff, attentive waiter - a definite must-try in Austin!
An amazing experience
We went to Red Ash for dinner It was recommended by a manager at our hotel. From the minute we entered the building we were greeted with a warm smile. Soon thereafter we were guided to our table. Our server Brandy was warm engaging and informative . She provided great info about the menu and made some wonderful suggestions The Barrata with fresh tomatoโs was infused with herbs and balsamic . So fresh and tasty. our entries Halabut and Friti de Mare were both incredible . To cap our meal we had the apple tart . OMG the best we have ever had. This wasnโt a meal . It was an experience . we have visited restaurants all over the world. Red Ash ranks right up there with the best we have been to. If you are going to Austin, make a reservation here. You will be treated to an special evening of culinary delights.
Perfection
Absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Brandy provided superb service (seriously, request her if you can!) She made excellent recommendations on entrees, sides and wine pairings and was an absolute delight to chat with. The satanโs circus cocktail was amazing! We had the prosciutto and burrata with fig that was delicious. Followed by the fruiti de mare and the halibut with the sweet potatoes on the side. Everything was fantastic but get the sweet potatoes, they will ruin all other sweet potatoes. We had the affogato for dessert which was the perfect finishing touch. We are already planning to make reservations for our daughterโs graduation next May. 100% would recommend!!
So yummy!
Fantastic spot! Every appetizer and meal was spot on. Kinda pricey but worth it. Wish they had a kids menu.
Fantastic Experience!
We were absolutely blown away at how incredible the food was at Red Ash. We were in Austin for a family vacation. Based on the reviews I knew it was going to be good, I didn't have any idea it would be that great. If you're considering this restaurant, just go!
A Must Stop
Great placeโฆwe did not have a reservation and a storm was just about to hit. Hostess found us a table. We had two great meals: bolognese for my wife and blue crab pasta for me. Both were 11 out of 10. We also had a funky calamari dish that seemed to be more kale salad than calamari, but was still good. Waitress was fun and offered spot on suggestions. A must stop!!
The Burrata dish was the best version of this I've ever had.
Amazing.Ambiance and service top notch.

Lots of interesting restaurants in Austin, but always looking for good Italian food and this is one worth trying. Food was very tasty, though service was a tad slow.
Amazing food and drinks.
The staff is top notch. The octopus and bone marrow are a must try!
Red Ash is every bit worth the 2 month reservation backlog
Red Ash is every bit worth the 2 month reservation backlog (dare I say best restaurant in Austin...?) Once you snag a reservation though, be sure to mark your calendar because there is a $50pp charge for no shows. And here's why it's worth it:With its central location right off of Congress and 3rd St, this sprawling two floor modern steampunk paradise makes you feel warm and fuzzy as soon as you enter. The staff are incredibly professional and knowledgeable on the menu & drinks. In terms of food, I'd honestly recommend ordering anything made on the Wood-Grill. There's something about wood-grilled food that really appeals to each of our inner prehistoric humans, and generates a truly inate feeling of satisfaction when eating. The Bone marrow appetizer with the fresh thick cut garlic bread was possibly the best thing I've put in my mouth. We savored every moment of the succulent, toasty marrow served upon two spectacular bones. The octopus a la plancha appetizer was also fresh and saucy but definitely paled in comparison. For our main, we ordered the frutti di mare (usually my fave pasta dish), which only comes in the entree size - good portion for sharing. This pasta was a little bit of a let down as it was not saucy enough and 2/6 of the mussels tasted spoiled. The other pastas did look good, but when I go back to this restaurant, I will be sticking to their specialty of wood-fired items. There is convenient valet parking right outside as street parking is limited in the area. All the staff are very helpful and welcoming. Book your reservation for this experience ASAP!
Service fee gouge alert.
Spent 15 minutes on a takeout order only to find a mandatory 20% service charge tacked on at the end. Again, this is takeout. This is deceptive and unethical pricing equivalent to surprise Ticketmaster fees at checkout. If your food pricing doesn't allow you to properly pay your staff, then raise the prices up front. Don't deceive your customers, one of which you just lost.

I'd love to be the person to say this place isn't worth the hype or 3 month wait, but it really, really, really is.
