Super disappointed given the price point.
We came here to celebrate our anniversary and communicated that to them. Service was disappointing, they sat us by the door which was freezing, and didn't acknowledge special occasion. Our steak was average at best, a little tough. Drinks were good. Overall, expensive and underwhelming

Cannot get enough of the steak brochette with horseradish cream! The one time I did try the filet mignon, was cooked to temp perfectly (rare). Service is always fast and friendly :)

tl:dr My problem with the experience was not so much that the food was mediocre but the price that I ended up paying was so significant for that mediocre food. If I wanted to eat mediocre food, there are any number of restaurants in Seattle that I can go to knowing full well what to expect for the money I'd pay. Edit: It's been a day now, and this may seem silly, but I'm still a little grumpy about the fact that I was given ANCHOVY BUTTTER, with no warning, simply labeled as "seasonal butter". What??!! Who does that?! And if this speaks to my perceived lack of a refined palate, so be it. Chunks of anchovies! Came to Red Cow for a special event, and unfortunately, did not feel like it was worth it for the money spent. The good: our server, a gentleman with a groomed beard, was attentive and helpful, the filet mignon and herb compound butter was delicious, the beef tartare was excellent, we had noted the special event on our reservation and it was mentioned by the server and there was a cute note. The bad: the tables are close together but also quite wide between the diners at the same table, making an intimate conversation feel unaccessible. Our rib eye, the most expensive steak on the menu, had far more fat than is enjoyable or edible. The bread and butter came with a butter that was blended with of all things anchovy, which gave a heavy funk and we ultimately asked for just plain butter on the side. The so so: the fries and dipping sauce were fine. The garlic aioli that came with the fries was honestly underwhelming. I'm sorry to say that I genuinely prefer the garlic aioli that comes from PNW fast food chain Burgerville. Outside of the beef tartar (amazing), and the filet mignon none of the items should've been more than 30 or so dollars .
Be the first to ReplyRed Cow is a steak-frites themed restaurant from Ethan
Red Cow is a steak-frites themed restaurant from Ethan Stowell in Seattle's Central District. The location is easily accessible, with plenty of easy street parking nearby. The restaurant interior is attractive, but we sat outside on what was described as a heated patio. Sitting on the patio on a Winter evening was probably a mistake - but the restaurant was clear about the conditions before I booked. The patio is protected from wind, and there was a heater. But I think I underestimated how cold things would be and we both wore our coats through dinner and I regretted not choosing a different restaurant. Menu selection is limited. Really steak frites and appetizers. Menu prices are high. Food quality of the steaks was good, but not commensurate with the prices Most disappointing, the Frites were not fresh cut. A key part of a Steak Frites for me is properly fresh cut fries. You can see in the photos on the Red Cow website that the frites used to be fresh cut (15th photo), but later pictures make it clear that they are no longer. I was hoping that I had mis-read the situation, but sadly the fries were bad. This is inexcusable for a steak-frites place. Weakly recommended. This is a good but not great steak place with decent meats, high prices and bad frites.

5/5. The "Potato Leek Bisque" was the highlight. The veggies that came with the "Filet Mignon" were too hard and the "Salad Lyonnaise" was super salty. The preset menu was too overpriced, totaling $256 (including 22% service charge). Service: Booked Valentine's Day on Google/SevenRooms. Arrived to find a surprise set menu. Asked to order from the regular menu but the waiter said "No this is the menu for tonight". We told him we would come back another day because we wanted to order from the regular menu. He called his manager over. We faced a threat of a cancellation fee ($95 per person) from the manager who claimed we were informed of the preset menu when making the reservation on their website. I booked through Google/SevenRooms, and there was no mention of the preset menu. Included pictures as proof and even tried booking again for later that night to check if Google/SevenRooms mentioned the preset menu. No mention of a preset menu in any of the confirmation or reminder emails from Google/SevenRooms either. We decided to stay to avoid paying the fee. They ran out of the "Egg Mimosa", an item on the first course menu. How are you gonna have a preset menu but run out of one of the items?? and two hours into opening?? The couple sitting next to us shared our disappointment and confusion about the preset menu. They left. The next couple that replaced their table was confused and disappointed about menu limitations and dish availability of the Egg Mimosa as well. Waiter was nice, but the manager wasn't. He was happy to be getting "free money" (as he said) when the couple sitting next to us dipped though!
Be the first to ReplyTotally not impressed from start to finish.
The host guy was completely rude from the get-go. When we arrived there was a problem with our reservation and they couldn't find it. So we asked if he had room for us, and mentioned it wasn't a big deal if not. He acted completely put out though, but did seat us. We settled in and he came back about 10 minutes later and wanted me to check my email to prove I made a reservation. I was caught off guard by this, and said, I'm not blaming you for this, these things happen, and admitted maybe I did it wrong. He looked more put out, so I asked him if he needed us to leave. Luckily our interactions with him after that were limited. The waitress was nice enough. We both ordered burgers. My friend asked for rare and no pepper. I asked for medium rare and no tomato. She received a well done burger and mine was mooing. We would have traded but mine had pepper. The burgers were actually pretty tasteless as well. The garlic fries were decent though. We both decided that this would be our last time going there. 10 out of 10 do not recommend.

So many things went wrong with our night here to warrant this review. Everything started fine and our server took our drink orders. On two separate occasions, though, she was confused and unaware by what was on the menu and mentioned she hadn't heard of the drink. This is a key part of being a server, no? More on that. After ordering food, it took ONE HOUR for it to arrive, on a Tuesday night that seemed neither slow nor busy. In that time service was sparse. Once it did arrive, two out of our three meals were overcooked compared to how they were ordered. We sent one back which took another 20 minutes. Someone new brought the corrected meal out and after that NOBODY came back to check on if everything was correct and good with us until we asked for the check. Now I should add that they charge a mandatory 22% service fee to every bill so you would expect service to be a top priority. This seems like a glaring issue with this kind of decision in that the incentive to provide any service is lost once the fee is mandated. Subjectively, the food was not good. But that's my opinion and someone else might like it so take with a grain of salt. But it was poorly seasoned so a grain of salt is exactly what was needed. Once we did request our bill, someone new was all of a sudden helping us. This is the first person who came to our table for 25 minutes, after receiving a corrected meal. I asked about our original server and was told she left for the night. Just disappeared without a word to any table. Again, very poor and absent service for a highish end restaurant that requires a "service fee". And for a restaurant that is open 4-10, why is a server leaving right in the middle of dinner service? Strange. We got our bill at 8:50. By this time, what I assume was a manager, had taken over the front table by the window with a laptop and clipboard literally doing back of house work in the front of house like we're at Chilis or something while we have a $250 bill on our table. At 8:50! It wasn't like it was past closing time. They close at 10. Incredibly unprofessional and changing the mood of the entire space for everyone there eating. If this is how ESR operates it will be my last visit to one of their restaurants. Extremely offputting.
Be the first to ReplyWe loved this neighborhood restaurant.
The service was great, the food delicious and the restaurant cozy. We all had hamburgers that were delicious and the salad verte was outstanding. Highly recommend if you want a relaxing and casual place for an evening out.
Be the first to ReplyThis was not the best experience at Red Cow.
Our first server was very nice and attentive but left after serving our drinks. Our second waiter totally ignored us till I asked him if he was our new waiter. He really did not seem to be into being our server. The chicken liver mouse was fabulous! And then we waited and waited for our main course. We finally asked what was going on and were told it takes 40 minutes to prepare the pork chop that one of us ordered. This was not stated on the menu nor explained to us when it was ordered. Finally our main courses were delivered and by another server (our third)...He at least had a personality and seemed interested in providing good service! The pork chop and venison were enjoyed, but the steak had to much gristle and fat. Sorry, there are too many great place in Seattle to have a great steak and excellent service. Unfortunately, the Red Cow did not deliver during this visit!

We always love going to Red Cow! The staff are always so welcoming. We usually get any of the steaks or the pork chop as our entree, but any other entree we've ordered has also exceeded our expectations! The bread and butter is divine. The roasted beets we had tonight were pretty dreamy! We favor sitting on the patio, but indoor dining is lovely too. It's one of our two go-to places for a nice dinner out.

A friend and I went during happy hour and I have to say it's one of my favorite HH in Seattle! We ordered everything off the HH menu. We both got the Steak Brochette, shared the Salad Verte and both got the Ch. Jalousie, Bordeaux Rouge wine! The service was fantastic and we were seated right away. Want to come back for sure!

Great HH menu! Fantastic salad (a must with all the heavy, salty proteins available) and beef tartare. The burger was tasty, but the brioche bun wasn't hearty enough to support it. We ordered the coulotte medium, and it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. We also ordered the sauce sampler and figured out that the horseradish cream is the way to go because it provides some lightness, similarly to the salad's vinaigrette. Frites were excellent. We look forward to returning to try some of the non-beef options (cassoulet and trout, specifically). Prompt and friendly service.

Be the first to ReplyBeen here twice so actually feel like I have some
Been here twice so actually feel like I have some credibility on how good this place is. First time we came, I just got the French onion soup and my husband got the burger. We both agreed it was fine. THIS time around, we got steaks (him the New York strip with the butter and I the filet mignon with bรฉarnaise sauce - so good). I'm so glad we decided to come back and try something else because it was AMAZING. My husband and I have been to our fair share of steak restaurants because we love steak and I put Red Cow up there. I love bรฉarnaise so that was great and my husband's also tasted really good. The aioli sauce for the fries is amazing and the salad was really simple but I loved it. Overall, I honestly think this place is really good - steaks cooked exactly to our liking (I got medium rare and husband medium) and they weren't "tiny." The size is literally listed.. to whoever said that in their review.
Be the first to ReplyOvercooked steaks.
overpriced for the size. I was still hungry when I left. underwhelming in general. I wish I could have a do-over. Wine was fine
Be the first to ReplyThe overall experience was ok.
The best part was the appetizers (escargot, olives, bone marrow). The main entrees were good but lack luster for the price. The waiter said that the chocolate torte was too small to share. While it was good, one dessert was enough to share given how much we already ate. If he paid attention, he would've noticed that. He didn't seem very attentive during service. He took too long to take our order and forgot to bring items at times. We'd definitely go back to try the rest of the appetizers on the menu.
Be the first to ReplyGreat date night spot for a burger or steak.
Very good happy hour, cocktails and perfect frites. Ethan Stowell restaurants are always consistent and dependable and this one is no different.Great tartare!
Be the first to ReplyThis is for NYEve 4 course prix fixe dinner.
We love Ethan Stowell's food, and ate a lot during the pandemic, so thought we'd try Red Cow, as we liked the NYE menu. What I forgot was that when we ordered dinner for 2 as takeout we would have enough left over for almost another whole meal, which was great. So when they set down 4 (! ) appetizers we ate them! Charcuterie plate which was good, bread, butter and olives, good, hamachi crudo, excellent! Then bone marrow with oxtail marmalade. The marmalade just sat on top of unseasoned, unbruleed marrow. Which made it just taste like a lot of bland fat, with bread. Should have skipped that.2nd course we chose Pig Trotter Croquette, yummy. And Baby Beets, so disappointing! The yellow beets were soft and overcooked, the red hard as a rock.3rd course husband had Coquilles St Jacques, which was good, but so rich and he was so full, he brought 1/2 home. I chose the Wagyu Zabuton Steak, which was cooked to a perfect medium rare, and very tasty, but so chewy I could only swallow about 1/2 of it, and left several chewed up bits on the plate. The accompanying potato puree was delicious, the baby vegetables mostly very hard. Didn't finish it or bring it home.Dessert was out of the question, so we brought that home.My other big complaint is the size of the pours in the wine pairing. I've mostly had wine pairings with winery associated dinners, and the pours were adequate to generous. These were probably 2 oz pours, not enough to drink with the whole course. I said to our waiter (who did give good service) that I would have been better off ordering 2 glasses of wine, unless their regular pours were tiny. He said they were 6 oz. So I paid $45 for about 8 oz of wine!
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointed and not what we expected.
The service was less than average (attitude with tone and eye rolling), there is no atmosphere and the food is very overpriced for the quality. We were expecting a charming French bistro with a neighbor feel - with great food for a family dinner. The appetizer were all good, but the overwhelming number of fries really downgraded the fact that you were paying $60+ for the steak. Yes, you can replace the fries with a salad for $3 more. I would skip this experience and hopefully one of Ethan's other restaurants can show better.

The food was amazing, I especially liked the beef tartare
Be the first to ReplyI had high expectations, given that Red Cow is Ethan
I had high expectations, given that Red Cow is Ethan Stowell's restaurant. Dusty candles on the table. Asparagus floating in oil. The oil theme continued with scallops that, by the way, came without a side dish, which was unexpected, given the high price of that dish. Well, at least someone on the Keto diet will appreciate it (minus oil).
Be the first to ReplyA pretty happy, happy hour.
Cocktails well balanced - I got the ranch water which was a nice refreshing drink on a summer night. Enjoyable peaceful patio. Happy hour burger was hearty, filling and tasty. I got mine medium, maybe should have done medium rare. Frites we're crispy and yummy. Green salad fresh, light but good! Next timeI'll Have to try the steak
Be the first to ReplyLovely place.
Great food and great atmosphere. We ordered the mussels and they were light and delicious. The steak was quite rare, but that seems to be the way it leans
Be the first to ReplyCute French spot located in Madrona neighborhood.
Had a reservation on a Friday evening - beautiful patio seating area with string lights. Inside is stylish as well.Drinks:Got two glasses of bubbly ($12 each) - one white and one rose.Food:Steak Tartare ($18) - finely executed, love the lemon zest on top. Mussels ($30) - good amount of fresh mussels, served with crispy fries. The house made (I think?) ketchup was light and sweet and the garlic aioli dip was delicious as well.Red Cow Burger ($23) - impressive looking and very large, flagship fondue had a nice tang and bacon strips were a nice addition. It was just missing a bit of oomph, I don't know what.Staff is great.
