We had lunch at David Toutain pre-COVID and were greatly looking forward to visiting again. Unfortunately, dinner this time was a letdown. There were certainly things to be positive about - most of the courses were very good with a few instances of brilliance sprinkled in. But an enjoyable dinner is more than putting away good food. For us, the entire evening was super rushed, it felt like sitting at a conveyer belt for high end food as we got peppered with one dish after another, with no time to relax whatsoever. On top of that the restaurant was woefully understaffed for such an operation and the servers were scrambling all evening to keep up with the pace of the kitchen. As soon as we finished one course the next one was delivered, very quickly described in one sentence, and then the server sprinted off. This also created issues for the sommelier, who apologized sincerely when he fell behind pouring the wine (we had the wine pairings, which were table wines well matched with the food) and needless to say, the sommelier had even less time than the servers to explain what he was delivering. A few more examples: with much fanfare a piece of butter was produced after the amuse-bouches (the smallest producer in France, only two places in Paris sell the butter, etc etc), but the travesty was that not a single piece of bread emerged over the course of the entire evening. So after several hours, with much less fanfare, the untouched butter and the unused bread basket were removed again. The candle on our table went out half way through the meal, it remained that way until the end of the evening. With the bill we also got a sheet listing the wine pairings, but it would have been a nice touch to note which wines had to be replaced in the pairings that evening. When we asked for a taxi, we were asked in return if we minded getting ourselves an Uber. If you expect impeccable service at a Michelin star restaurant, David Toutain is not for you. I do not blame the staff for this, I think they were put in an impossible situation. We both felt that the restaurant has lost its soul.
