River Roast Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
great food and service!
great interesting food. tasty and fresh. the ambiance is great and you feel that they really care if you are satisfied.. great service, on the river bank.
I liked the place.
It has good seating area indoor and outdoor. View is great from outside. We ordered appetizers and main dish as salad. We were very full to order whole chicken and fish but it should be great as well, look for pictures online before order because main course is large quantity. Service was good. I loved the cocktails. Had a great evening, we clicked pictures as view was amazing !

Walked-in for lunch - thankfully they did not require a resy like a few of the other popular eateries on the river. Staff were super friendly and attentive and the food came out quickly. Would definitely come back to c try their dinner service.

The insanely high prices on the menu didn't match the quality of the food served. Service and food experience were sub-par. We received a burnt piece of toast along our overpriced charcuterie board, which was not edible. I pointed this out to our server, and he said, "Yes, it's extra crispy," and laughed out loud, and walked away. He did not bother to ask if we wanted a replacement toast or apologize and comp us for a dessert at the end of the meal or something that would have been the right thing to do. Instead, we received his sarcasm in return. Honestly, any professional restaurant would have never let a burnt piece of toast leave the kitchen. We will never be back again.

Food was average and so was the service! Can think of other "American" restaurants to go to that has better food and better service. Th restaurant wasn't even that busy and it took forever to get our food.
Went with a group.
The staff were excellent and our server was spot on with recommendations. We had several of the appetizers so we all tried some. The artichoke dip was excellent. Myself I felt the bread was a little over toasted but others enjoyed it. I enjoyed the lamb meatballs along with the pork bellies. Fries had a good seasoning on them but we didn't eat the fast enough and I don't like cold fries lol. We had ordered the golden goblets (chicken tenders) we barely touched them as they seemed more breading than chicken. The waitress asked what was wrong and we told her what we thought. Without even asking or telling us she removed them from the tab. Would I recommend yes I would. It was busy but kept up with the rush. Great job
Right on the River
Needed to take a rest from exploring the city and found this charming place right on the river. Chicken san hit the spot as did the beverage but the real draw of this place is sitting right on the river and watching the boats go by. Fries instead of potato chips would have been nice though. A tad upscale but nothing too stiff in any off-putting way. Thank -you.

View - nice Chicago River views Environment - sparse, devoid of any real style or vibe Acoustics - Absolutely terrible Service - Very disappointing Food - Average at best Value - Absurdly high prices We were a table of four seasoned diners who know what's what. We could barely hear each other. No one considered acoustics when designing this restaurant. The food took 45 minutes to arrive and was barely warm. Everything is ala carte, side dishes are few and far between and crazy expensive. Entrees were average in taste and presentation and absurdly expensive...$49 fish and chicken with nothing accompanying them, $17 side salads, etc. are pricing levels of a fine Michelin-rated restaurant NOT an informal patio bar on a river. Our fish was nearly cold. The crab/avodado toast was satly and cold. Our server was over-the-top pleasant when presenting the check (so obviously fishing for a nice tip) but virtually absent most of the time before. Either Chicago diners have lost any sense of quality or the chef and staff of this restuarnt need some serious retraining. I'm being generous with two stars. And THIS is a Levy restaurant considered to be one of Chicago's finest???? I would normally reach out to management to explain my experience but all I'd get is some discount on another bad meal. I will not be back.
The patio has an exceptional view.
The food and service match that energy. If you want a professional server with personality ask for Jorge. Sorry, I didn't do pics. Too busy eating good food. And portions are solid. Nuff said....
Super awesome atmosphere.
Sit on the outdoor deck if possible. Plenty of drink options. The full brazier was good but on the fishy side (if you know what mean).

Had some friends from out of town come visit and we were excited to try River Roast. Sadly our server was incredibly rude. We ordered a variety of food and insisted we ordered more because "it wouldn't be enough". We felt pressured to order more food, so we did. Once our food came she didn't stop by. We were close to half way done and wanted a few things. I asked for barbeque sauce and her response in a snotty tone was "I'll see if we have any". My friend didn't even want to ask for anything else because she felt like we were an inconvenience. Food was average.
The food was REALLY good.
I ordered the pork belly bites, chicken & waffles, and the French toast bake. Before I had received any service I asked the hostess to move me to the table next to mine which was closest to the river. I was visiting from out of town and wanted the most out of my experience. It was a strong 'NO' . It didn't make sense considering a waiter or waitress had not come to my table yet, but no problem. She came back 5-10 minutwith a slight attitude but granted my request with the move. My second issue was they closed our umbrella while we were eating without asking. I was enjoying being under the shade and appreciate any protection from the sun especially if it's right in my eyes. My food had not made it to the table yet, and it would've been a nice gesture to ask if I was enjoying the shade before they chose to take it from me. The manager touch our table after that which was appreciated and that's where the fourth star comes in.
Primo!
It wasn't just the great river views and the delicious views, the Wait staff and management was exceptional. Shout out to JuanFernaado! Primo!
Chill
Right on the north side of the Chicago River, this restaurant is perfectly situated with an outside area. Unfortunately it was closed because rain was expected, so I settled in at bar. The friendly staff served me the fried chicken sandwich with a few pints to wash it down. It was tasty, but not exceptional. The hugo slice of chocolate cake could have been a bit more chocolate-y. All in all a very pleasant place to spend a couple of hours.
welcoming and good
Classic hamburger shop with something extra, it being understood that we are talking about American cuisine The place is very central, easily accessible and welcoming Good and well presented food Precise service, adequate prices
Great place, but greeting and seating needs addressing
Great location opposite the site of the (little known) Eastland disaster, with patio dining overlooking the river. You enter at a floor above the dining level, where there is a ‘greeter’ who, when we visited, did not seem well-suited to her role; surly and uninterested. The couple in front were given a 45 minute wait time for a patio table if they wanted to eat outside, and we were given a 1 hour wait time. Fair enough because whilst we had requested a patio table on the booking, it was clearly stated that their policy for patio dining is first come first served. So we said we’d just eat inside. We were then shown to a table right at the back of the dining room (which was maybe a quarter full), right by the hot open kitchen. Meanwhile the couple in front, who had opted to wait for an outside table, were ushered from the bar to one within 10 minutes. And then over the next 10 minutes a further 3 or 4 parties were ushered straight outside. We weren’t happy and unusually for us decided to speak to the manager about it. He was excellent. Listened to our concerns, apologised and explained that wait times stated may end up being different to reality, but offered to move us out there for out mains if he could, which he promptly did and gave us a free drink too. What an excellent manager, and hopefully he can address the lack of charm from his greeting staff. Food and service were otherwise great. Beef carved at the table was very nicely cooked, with generous portions. One quibble with the service: the lady did the ‘no writing down the order’ thing which means, somewhat inevitably, that it won’t come out correctly. Not a problem for us because when the apps and mains came out together we simply sent the mains back, but it can lead to a waste of food for the restaurant. But that’s quibbling. Overall, a poor start, but great finish to the evening!
Perfect day for lunch in Chicago!
Loved our lunch at River Roast! It was a beautiful day in Chicago, and sitting outside was perfect! The shrimp and crab toast and the street corn were our favorites! So much fun to see all the activity on the river. We even saw two wedding parties having pictures made on nearby bridges. Will be back!
Avoid it with kids
We had a reservation and our little one had fallen asleep in the stroller. The girl at the reception said we couldn’t bring the stroller at the table. Then the manager came and told us to come back later, when the kid woke up, despite being 1pm (and we have 2 more kids). Aside from the policy, which I can understand although is stupid, the rudeness was totally unnecessary.
Food, View, Service, Value: Excellent all around!
Great experience with visiting family (including picky eaters from California). We ordered three main dishes (the roasts) and four vegetable sides for five diners with healthy appetites. Everything was tasty and well prepared, and the family-style servings are generous (we had leftovers). Our group enjoyed being able to have multiple tastes and ability to choose more of their favorites. We sat on the riverside patio with a serene evening view over the river (probably more hectic on weekends). The service was great: all the staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive without hovering; there when you want them, otherwise leave you in peace. We were (almost) the last to leave at the end of the night, and they never rushed us but made us feel welcome every moment. River Roast is ideal for a larger group willing to share--really good value and a wonderful experience. Even the valet parking is more reasonable than one expects for prime downtown! Excellent all around.
Surprise after wonderful surprise
When you order an appetizer (street corn and pickles) and you are so blown away that you think “there’s no way the entree will live up to this” and then WHAM. And when dinner is amazing (chicken sandwich homemade chips and a beet salad) and it’s followed with a delicious dessert (chocolate cake and coffees) - you brace for the bill. But what a pleasant surprise that was (under $80). Cannot say enough good stuff about this place. Everyone was friendly and kind. Only a 5 minute wait for riverside table in the sun?? #winning
