Nothing to complain about
Delicious and bountiful. Each person at our table ordered a different dish, and each one that I tried was great. Could barely finish my own dish (burrito), which was a good value. Also loved their margaritas. Customer service was friendly and fast, and the ambiance was nice.

I am usually disappointed when we eat at Mexican restaurants for one or more reasons. Not so at Sabor A Mexico! Their salsa was fresh and delicious, the dinner salads were a perfect blend of mixed lettuce and vegetables with a tasty light dressing. My husband had Platos Rancheros, a pork stew in a rich, tomatillo chili mixture with rice and their house beans, a welcome treat from the typical refried pinto beans. I had the Mariscos Rancheros, shrimp and scallops in a light tomato chili sauce; not only was the seafood cooked to perfection but they used perfectly ripe Roma tomatoes, not the hard pink ones often served elsewhere. They also gave me a taste of their delicious mole, which I would recommend above any other I have tasted (except perhaps my own, which is significantly different). We didn't have room for dessert, but we will have other opportunities as we will certainly return!

We've given up eating anywhere else when we are in San Rafael because nothing matches the quality of the food with the delicious flavors and creative choices and nothing matches the outstanding staff and service they present. Absolutely everything in this restaurant is beyond amazing and we strongly recommend it!

Service was friendly and fast. Food was fresh and very flavorful. Menu had a variety of creative options. Chips and salsa were both homemade and very good.

We are incredibly picky about our Mexican food and insist that it be freshly prepared with excellent flavor. This place does not disappoint ! We went because of their five-star rating and the meal we had was bar none one of the best we've had in recent memory particularly of Mexican restaurants which are generally mediocre in the Bay Area. If you get the chance or are in this area do whatever you have to to go try this restaurant it is amazing!
My husband had the classic carne asada burrito which was outstanding and I decided to get the lettuce wraps with shrimp. I love lettuce wraps but the flavor on these was outstanding and I shall definitely be having them again and again!
A hidden gem!
This place came up in a Yelp search by a family member, and was unknown to any of us before this visit. The location is on 4th Street, a major business street, yet it is more westerly than the downtown proper and so escaped us for many months. The location is currently where the city closes some blocks a couple days weekly for "dining under the lights" as a way of helping businesses during this COVID crunch. The area is filled with tables and heaters for several restaurants along these 2 blocks and seems quite popular.
We came here for a special family dinner, originally getting reservations for the outdoor dining area. Although the outside dining area has gas flame heaters, this night was much colder than we expected and so with small children we switched to indoors. There were a few patrons inside, less than 10 including us, and we felt outnumbered by the staff! Still, with plenty of space, and doors open (we were about 15 feet from one) we felt okay with the switch.
The ambience inside is amazing! Colorful, rustic, homey and well laid out for traffic flows, it is impressive upon first blush. In the dining room where we were there is a wall length mural along one wall. The opposite wall has open windows which look into the kitchen area, and the bar area which is a separate dining area as well. And another wall next to our table has open windows that look back out onto the street. Very nice physical presentation.
We were slow to place beverage orders, as there were so many choices, both new and already familiar to us. We did get chips and salsa right away while we were mulling our choices. We decided to start with a classic margarita, a prickly pear margarita (new) and a mango margarita (also new!). These arrived in short order, and help us while we now turned our collective attention to the menu. The menu is heavy with choices for meat dishes, not so friendly for vegetarians so beware. And vegans are likely to be left with chips and salsas as their only meal, so beware.
We finally settled on some appetizers and entrees. For appetizers, we ordered a queso fundido, flautos de pollo, and plate of street tacos with a shrimp and a salmon added.
The entrees were next up, with a fajitas burrito leading off, followed closely by a nachos de asada, 2 carnitas tacos, 1 pastor taco, 1 veggie burrito (mojado with verde salsa), and 1 camaron taco bringing up the end. I think that was all!
The food arrived promptly and HOT - more on that in a minute! - and was well presented and almost too good looking to eat - but we forced ourselves!
The food was indeed hot, not only coming fresh from the kitchen, but was also very picante - SPICY! In fact, I myself - a lover of all native foods Mexican, having spent many months there over my life - could not even eat either of the salsas served with the chips. The others managed but with some discomfort.
The appetizers and entrees, if they had salsa or sauce of some sort were the same - SPICY! In fact, we had to order the kids new food without any salsa - those single order tacos at the end of the list - to make sure they could eat. The adults took liberal advantage of the beverages to help cool the fire, but it was not always a successful endeavor - but fun trying!
The food was tasty, but the spice heat just overpowered what would have been delicious food. Spice heat, like salt or other seasonings should complement and bring out the flavor, not overpower it, as was the case here.
Some dishes like the queso fundido were not spicy, but even the nachos had lots of very strong jalapenos. So, if you are sensitive to spicy heat, order without salsas or with it on the side - just a warning! You should really taste and enjoy the meal in it's unaltered form.
The queso fundido was small but tasty, and we had to remind them about the tortillas that were missing - half the dish basically!
The nachos were enormous, and more than enough to share with several people. Lots of toppings and meat as well.
The veggie burrito was good, and large, but again that verde salsa was just too hot! Shame as it had good taste, but I couldn't wipe off the sauce from the burrito.

Overall, the service was great and plentiful, the food was actually good aside from - well, you know - and the beverages were absolutely the best in any Mexican restaurant we could remember!! Strong, tasty, beautiful in appearance - 5 stars no question! We had to try some others, having used up the first round for fire control, so we ended with a tamarind margarita (new), a strawberry margarita, and a passion fruit margarita - new to us as well!
We will be back - knowing the "secret"!
