3/5 ?
Not sure what to rate this fine dining restaurant. From you enter you are taking very good care of. Everything works very good. During the 15 courses which I think is a bit exaggerated because some of the "dishes" are so small that you almost can't taste them, we had 2-3 highlights. The bread for 1 of the dishes was maybe the best bread ever eaten. The mushroom dish was also very good. Rest of the dishes was average and a couple was not tasty. When it comes to the wine paring, we had local wines, there were many highlights. We had one small dish we couldn't eat and to be honest at this level of dining we expected that they would come up with some extra for us but they didnt. Overall a good experience but many of the dishes are too small. Myself I just get irritated to get dishes that are at this size. So maybe based on the price and expectations of this kind of restaurant it should get a 3/5 but the wine paring gives it a 4/5. 210.000 forint are expensive for a couple. Had much better food experiences from a 1 star restaurant before.

Every course was a surprise. Sensational in its presentation and taste experience. The restaurant's decor fit in very nicely with the evening.

Superb. We have been at the roof terrace, but not at the ground floor. Stunning views, best service, delicious food with the best selected vines.

This restaurant represents the very best of fine dining, with wonderfully accommodating staff and food of the highest quality. My wife is lactose-free and pescatarian, and I chose a pescatarian menu. Both menus were adapted with great thought, impressive creativity, and care, with neither of us feeling as if we had missed out on anything. Substitutions and adaptations were carefully explained. All staff were extremely knowledgable and took great effort to explain the dishes and to reassure us that my wife’s menu had no lactose. Highly recommended. Although expensive by Budapest standards, it is worth the price.

I must tell that this was our best restaurant experience ever. It was a birthday present for my lovely wife who also founded amazing. Literally she was speechless after this unique experience.
Be the first to ReplySuperb experience
This Michelin star place run by Szilard Toth chef and team who happened to be named one of the 100 best chefs in the world in November 2023 is a must when in Budapest. Superbly made and presented dishes using top quality local ingredients, great wine choices, excellent service. A place for dazzling your tastebuds.
Be the first to ReplyExquisite taste of Hungary
Exquisite and indulgent - but the multiple courses were all very clean, with a focus on local ingredients, and they had a vegetarian option for my wife which made this place stand out. First off we did find it slightly uncomfortable (it's not a discreet dining experience, but rather interactive, with tables near each other and facing to the open room, and other couples within earshot). The requisite presentation was a little florid, and they make a lot of spectacle about the chef's personal stories etc - but they did a good job with it overall. Waiters didn't always look comfortable standing around either but they were speedy and the service was good. Eventually we did get into the swing of things and relaxed a bit during the meal (helped by excellent local natural wines and lemonades). Not cheap but also not on the crazy side of the price spectrum of Michelin restaurants. It appeared that this was the most sustainable of them all in Budapest, which I also appreciated. Recommended.
Be the first to ReplyTable not saved, charged fee
Our table was “taken out of the room” before we arrived and we were turned away after having had a booking, 2 days later charged £230 cancellation fee. Rude and unprofessional staff.
Be the first to ReplyOur second visit was also good
Staff was very kind and helpful. We especially liked the dessert. But some courses was too salty for me.
Be the first to ReplyHungarian Delight!
Very interesting concept and equally fascinating tastes! We enjoyed a splendid 3 hour dinner and tasted all parts of Hungary in one meal. Some of the courses were masterpieces, just sorry they were so small....we would have love to have more. Even if the 15 courses were very small we left the restaurant very happy and content.

This 15-course menu completely wowed us. It was savory, sweet, and utterly original. Hats off to the chefs and staff at SALT. I would return in a flash.
Be the first to ReplyVery good!
Fantastic food experience with modern Hungarian cuisine. Great natural wine selection. Very knowledgeable staff and nice service!
Be the first to ReplyNice experience, but too extreme to our taste
Overall, the dining experience was exceptional. Staff super nice, very organized, kind, attentive. Very much enjoyed our time, was fun and joyful. Only thing was the extremity of some ingredients, such as black ants and snails. Also, having water as an item of the wine pairing was a bit unusual. Otherwise, reasonably priced (relative to the fine dining scene in Budapest)
Be the first to ReplyA worthy Michelin star holder
Salt is a fairly new Budapest establishment and a worthy Michelin-star holder. It is small with only ten tables so booking well in advance is the only chance to enjoy a meal here. The fixed menu relies on Hungarian traditions and many special local ingredients, many coming from the village where the chef grew up. It also includes many unusual ingredients for Hungarian kitchen such as snails once favored by wealthy noble families and now extinct from tables. For foreigners probably best to visit with a Hungarian who undoubtedly will relate many childhood stories to some of the food served. The wines in the wine pairing are mostly biodynamic and natural so unless favoring such flavours, probably better to choose from the wine menu. A truly memorable experience that is best begun or ended in the rooftop bar of the hotel where the restaurant also is located.

A restaurant worth is Michelin star (2021). We has the seven course menu with wine pairing. We chose the Hungarian wine selection over the European and were not disappointed. The wine was exceptional. The food was superb and beautifully presented. The staff were very engaging attentive and informative. The only downside to our experience was our table by the exit/corridor. Best tables for couples are the window tables.
Be the first to ReplyWow! A must for very special memories.
Wow! Came with Friends for a Birthday meal, was an amazing experience. The vegan tasting menu was fabulous, the food was beautifully presented and very inventive, everything was delicious. Recommend the Hungarian wine pairing. The staff were very attentive, and very polite, but you didn’t know they were there. All the food was explained before every course, as was the wine. Everything was perfect! Would recommend 100%. Would like to thank the Chefs and staff for an unforgettable experience.
Be the first to ReplyWe loved it
There is only tasting menu, no a la carte. We got 14 courses. The food was very special. It would be nice if guests can get hand sanitizers because we had to eat almost everything with hand and did not get any cutlery.

We spent a fantastic evening at this place Saturday! The food is impeccable, harmonious flavors paired with a wonderful sight! I would like to highlight how attentive they are, keeping in mind the food allergy and also remembering my wife’s birthday! The friendly atmosphere of the place is clearly provided by the staff who are extremely attentive! Huge personal thanks for the staff provided us with excellent drink recommendations and entertained us with an accurate presentation of the history of the dishes! The international wine selection is interesting, the quantity of each wine is adequate, the total is approx. the price of 3.5-4dl of wine, however, seems excessive. Maybe fans of traditional wines are a bit extravagant, I liked the selection. We can only recommend the place to everyone, an unforgettable experience!

A dance of flavours on your palette! It was such a good experience, even better than we expected. I hope they will get their second star soon! The wine pairing was fantastic and the dishes overflowing with flavours! Take your time to enjoy the food and the great service! Not to mention I had the best old fashioned ever!
Be the first to ReplyA gem in Budapest
Amazing culinary experience! It was definitely our best dinner treat in our life. The natural interior was in perfect harmony with the organic dishes and wines. The tasting menu was so incredibly tastful the flavours were out of this world, it was a journey through time also when I felt like I am in my grandmother's kitchen. We especially liked the kind and cosy atmosphere, we just can not stop talking about our fantastic evening since Thursday. Thank you.
Be the first to ReplyEvery bite brings a smile
I can’t think when I last wrote a review. Maybe never. But here I am. I am in Budapest for work, and this is my last night here. I am staying nearby and was lucky enough to score a table when someone canceled last minute and I just happened to be asking about a reservation.
In short this was one of the best meals of my life. Every bite of food brings a smile. I actually have tear in my eye as I write this thinking about the totality of the experience. Every bite is so carefully constructed. You can feel and taste the forethought that goes into it all. Butter that’s been fermented for two weeks. Pork raised on the chef’s farm. Mushrooms foraged by the staff. Wine pairings that include a water pairing. An herbal tea that you “make” with dessert using a single leaf. Even the dishes with ingredients I would not ordinarily gravitate towards (eg goats milk, lamb, etc) stand out as extraordinary. The dishes are small with only 2-3 bites each, but there are 15 of them, so get over the fact that you can’t have more of that lamb dish. Be grateful you got to try it all and just imagine how good the next dish will be.
But what makes Salt so very enjoyable is that while the food is very serious, there is an easiness about the experience that makes it all feel…. homey. At some level I hope Salt stays with “just” a single Michelin star. Anything more risks propelling this gem into the big leagues where too often chefs play defense and the experience becomes stiff and contrived.
It’s a real price tag here (especially for Hungary) but man oh man is it worth it.
Expected much more!
What a disappointment. We have expected so much more from SALT, when we made our booking among other fine dining restaurants. Small tables as if you were in a café. A tasting menu bursting with flavors – was not the case! Many of the servings tasted very similar and was overfloated with acidity, fermentation, smoke, and flowers. The fantasy must be only in the presentation by a waiter babbling away in a non-understandable English. The servings was not nearby the photos from the restaurant! A ridiculous millimeter serving of a forest mushroom on a stick, a leaf with “raindrops” to a large greasy bread (at least that was tasteful) served with Hungarian wine paring not exceeding 2-3 mouthful (less than a winetasting) for the first 5 servings. My husband got gracefully a little more in the glass, when empty after 3 servings – but no refill for the lady at the table. Hilariously came a cup of very special salty water dropping a geranium leaf to be some of drink. No rocket science there – we have done that ourselves at home? The ecological Hungarian white wines – only one red – was very sharp and especially the last for the fruit garden was more like an apple cider. At the end of “the session” we mentioned our dissatisfaction, and the waitress had the nerve to ask, whether we were “used to fine dining”. What an insult and highly unprofessional!! We did not come all the way from Denmark to be treated like that – and yes this was certainly not NOMA or Geranium, if you know these fabulous restaurants/chefs.

Visited few times since the opening. I knew at the first visit it would get a Michelin star. It has just received one in August. This is a cool little place with a unique take of some of the Hungarian dishes. The 15 course tasting menu with wine pairing is the way to go. Great staff and service and very reasonable prices. It is a treat. Don’t miss it.
Be the first to ReplyA 5-star dining experience with a few 'buts'
Every dish was crafted by highly skilled chefs and each was a piece of art.
The Hungarian wine pairing was excellent and really showed off how great a wine country Hungary is.
The setting was cozy and tastefully decorated. No doubt this restaurant is reaching for the stars and they truly deserve at least one.
We hesitate to give Salt 5 stars as the music was a bit too loud which made it difficult to hear the waiters' presentation of the food which in English already seemed a bit insecure. We don't expect perfect English, so elaborating the written menu received upon arrival would have helped us a lot.
Perfect start in fine dining
It was our first fine dining experience, so while I cannot say how it is compared to others, I can fully recommend Salt as your first try! The evening was very charming, and while standards and the sophistication of the plates are clearly sky high, the mood and atmosphere is still relaxing, welcoming, and friendly. The plates have lots of great ideas, unusual and surprising combinations, and they are beautifully composed and presented. All in all, it was a great evening, and we really enjoyed it, thanks!
