Sama Sama has excellent food and we were helped by Tony in the patio. He provided the awesome service, the food came out in a very timely fashion, and Tony explained the menu very well. We will definitely will be coming back and dining here again. Thanks for the great experience Tony. Strong work!

In Santa Barbara for vacay, this spot was recommended by a local. wings - half and half of the two flavor choices. Both the signature and the Vietnamese were delightful Green papaya salad - ingredients were fresh and tasted good. But not my cup of tea, preferences? Braised pork noodles - kinda felt like a half/third sized portion for a noddle dish. This is an individual sized side portion. Tasty, but tiny. Naughty nuri spare ribs - delish. Accompaniments - delish. Service was prompt and friendly.
Be the first to ReplyThe service was great.
The food though it was okay. Our fish was frozen in the middle, and we accidentally had a frozen bite. However, no discount or anything additional provided for the uncooked food. The fried rice- nasi goreng was probably the best part. The satay chicken was pretty dry.

. best wings in the west and the service is unmatched. This spot has gotten me laid countless times and I praise the efforts of all parties involved.

Food was testy, service was good, but to added 20% tip with our ordered was a bit much, and when the bill came it asked for additional tip..ha..ha..I didn't think so. Love the food, but will not go back for a long time. Thank you very much.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was so bad, I'm so sorry.
Party of 2, we ordered the signature wings, fried brussel sprouts, and crispy pork rice and none of it was good; wings strange tasting, brussel sprouts horrible after taste and rice was dry and honestly bland, more cilantro than meat. Our total came out to be $70 with tip, honestly super disappointed. I'm only giving it 1 star because the atmosphere, staff and presentation were nice.

They were understaffed, but hoo boy, did they fail at holding it together - the waitstaff was snappy with customers, left us without water for 20 minutes, took 45 mins to get one person's dish that she had forgotten about, while the rest were done and we were about ready to leave. The food was fine - not a patch on what you'd get in the SGV, but decent at bringing out SE Asian flavors and using subtle combinations. Not sure I'd call it the best I've had, and DEFINITELY not Michelin star worthy. At a default 20% service charge, the piss poor service was not something that would make me ever want to go back.
Be the first to ReplyI loved the food here! Brussels sprouts were fabulous.
I am not in favor of an imposed "gratuity" of 20% added before taxes. A gratuity is optional and earned, what they impose is an extra charge.

Be the first to ReplyNot impressed with their food.
Nice ambiance the dishes we ordered were good but not great! We are spoiled having a wider selection of restaurants in Orange County.
Be the first to ReplyJust visited Sama Sama for the first time.
Loved the chicken wings, Brussels, and crispy rice. The server was really friendly, ambiance was really pleasant. Absolutely will be back, more things on the menu I want to try!
Be the first to ReplyFood was good, service good and ambience as well.
We asked for more chips and had to pay for them!!?

Food is good like always but was disappointed to see they included a 18% gratuity for dining in but also request a tip as well. I apologize but I'm not paying what amounts to a 45% tip on my 100 dollar bill. If your using This gratuity to pay your employees more then don't also expect me to tip them. Weird vibes at the end of a otherwise good meal. Won be back as long as this terrible policy is active.
Be the first to ReplyI'm at a loss with how to review this restaurant.
I've ultimately decided to go with 3 stars for the food.Best food: Crispy duck salad, signature wings, + steak. They claimed that what made the restaurant unique was that they "staggered" the food. However, out of the 7 dishes we ordered, we got 4 all at once. Then, 5 minutes later, we got 2 more dishes. Then, 25 minutes later, we got our final dish. We had almost forgotten about the last dish. All of the food was delicious, but the "staggered" aspect of the meal just seemed like a poor excuse for not knowing how to time the food.Additionally, they had SO many people working and they all were just hanging out in the back. Clear as day, we saw all of the wait staff just chit chatting away. I understand this likely happens in a lot of restaurants, but not out in the open for everyone to see.The real kicker that stumped us was the reservation/waitlist system. First, they do not allow for reservations. We were a party of 4 and arrived at 5:30. They told us it would be an hour to an hour and a half wait. We said no problem, put our name and number down, and headed to Good Lion. The hostess let us know that we would receive a confirmation text. About 5 minutes later, I realized I never received a confirmation text. I walked back over and asked her about it, and I had to re-put my name on the wait list.At 7:00pm, I went back over to check on the wait as we had come to the end of the "hour to an hour and a half" wait time. I understand that she was just making a prediction, but I just wanted an update. She said we should probably get another round of drinks. At 7:30pm, now two hours after we originally put our name in, we went back to see if there was an additional update. The hostess apologized and said that people were likely taking too much time because of the rain. At 7:52pm, we finally got a text saying our table was ready. YAY! However, when we entered, there were FIVE tables of four open. With all of the wait staff just kind of standing around too (as mentioned above), this was a poor first impression. All of us were just a bit stumped as to how we could have possible waited over two hours just for the entire restaurant to be empty. Regardless, we wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps all the tables just happened to finish at the same time. While I want to believe that, the lack of service inside the restaurant just makes it really hard to believe that they just didn't call us over earlier. With all of that said, we would definitely come back. The three food items mentioned above were stand outs, and I would absolutely order them again. Just be extremely wary of the service expectations. I would also recommend coming early and preparing yourself for an extra long wait.

This is such a cool place! It gets pretty busy in the evenings, but swing in for lunch if you're looking to try it out for the first time. Great selection of unique beers, wines and cocktails and a very cool food menu if you're hungry. I had the combination wings, and while they were a little small for the price, the flavor was fantastic on both of them. It's also a great spot to sit on state street and watch the SB world go by yet.
Be the first to ReplyWe sat down and ordered drinks and food.
My friends food came out about 30 minutes before my dish, the table next to us (that was seated 20 minutes after us) received the same dish before me, when I asked the food to just be returned because it had been well over and hour and at that point I was just ready to go, we realized 18% gratuity is included for any party greater 1 person. The "manager" didn't apologize, basically blamed the cook, and didn't even offer any type of compensation or apology. Poor customer service and you don't even get to decide whether or not their bad service deserves a tip. I would proceed with caution.

This was our last meal in Santa Barbara before heading home, and I was pretty happy with the food! We ordered the crispy duck salad and the signature wings family style off the lunch menu. Crispy duck salad: 8/10. This was crisp and delightful! Always love some sweetness and tartness in my salads, so I thought the addition of grapes in this was a great choice. The few pieces of crispy duck inside were good though a little too salty for me. Signature wings: 8/10. Beautifully fried and crunchy on the outside covered in a sweet & spicy tamarind BBQ sauce. Maybe it's because I'm not a big fan of cilantro, but I could've done without the cilantro on these (though it made the dish pretty!)A great Indonesian restaurant on State St with unique flavors and a cute but small interior dining area! I thought prices were reasonable given the fresh ingredients and the area. Just be aware this restaurant does automatically add a 20% service charge to your bill.
Be the first to ReplyYUM! Holy cow what a memorable meal.
Every single dish we had was so flavorful and awesome, our party of 12 raved about all the food. Though everything was delish the standouts were the pork noodles, duck and bok choy salad (#1), the ribs, and the Vietnamese wings. There was some confusion as to which wing was the spicy wing, I was suspicious that the crispy wing garnished with peppers was not the spicy one (claimed a fellow diner). I enjoyed it and turns out it was indeed the spicy one. So if I could enjoy it, I didn't think it was 3 chili peppers spicy. We were visiting from out of town, I would seriously consider coming back to eat here. We ate outside, and they tried to accommodate our chilly group as best they could with heaters and blankets. Great place.

Farm to table Michelin star Southeast Asian cuisine! This place is a gem in SB and is a must try if you're ever in the area. The restaurant gets very busy during peak dinner hours so make sure to book a reservation beforehand or come a bit earlier to get your name on the waitlist. There are seating options inside or outside and both options provide an intimate top tier dining experience. The staff here are very welcoming and accommodating. The selection of items on the menu are very unique and you cannot go wrong with whatever you order. Our must try dishes are the Vietnamese wings and the Nuri ribs. We will definitely be back next time we're in the area to enjoy another amazing meal.

Sama Sama Kitchen is on a Michelin notables list, although we went there because it was close to the museum on State Street. We walked in during the lull before dinner hour. We had other plans later, so we kept it light ordering the ribs, gado gado, smashed cucumber salad and finished with pavlova. I also tried one of their "mocktails."The ambiance of this Indonesian restaurant is very casual. Maybe, too casual? Too casual to take my order? I don't think I can count high enough to tally how many times a server walked right past our table without looking. It was almost like a game a chicken. Are they going to stop, or am I ordering at the bar? At the big community table, there was possibly an owner sitting looking at a cookbook. I probably should have shouted for him to take my order. We were in SB for the weekend, and this place gets the worst service award out of all the places we went.As for the food, my husband just reminded me of how hard all of it was to eat. The ribs didn't come apart easily, and were served on a tiny plate. The smashed cucumber salad had whole spicy pepper chunks in it. The gado gado was good, but also hard to eat out of a small dish. The two outstanding things were the pavlova, which was really a work of phallic meringue art, and my drink, the Garden of Eden, which was one of the most successful mocktails I have ever had.I gave Sama Sama Kitchen three stars because I am not young, and didn't want to spend the rest of eternity waiting for my server. If you do one thing here, let it be the pavlova. It was the true standout.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is worth the wait.
Idk what magic they are performing in that kitchen but everything is fried to perfection. The crispiest food I've ever had the pleasure of eating. One of my favorite restaurants in Santa Barbara.
Be the first to ReplyThis Michelin star casual restaurant is really a gem in SB.
I rarely give yelp reviews unless something is really good or really bad, this place is the former. We got the mie goreng, green papaya salad, nasi goreng jawa, the hot chicken bao, and the kue gula merah. The papaya salad was really refreshing with fresh cilantro. The nasi goreng jawa is a fried rice dish with egg, it is savory and filling. The mie goreng is spicier than you'd think, not too spicy but if you have kids they might not like it. The hot chicken bao on the other hand is less spicy than expected. It was probably the best part of the meal other than the kue gula merah, a palm date sugar cake with pineapple ice cream and caramel. It's definitely the star of the show. The cake was warm and savory sweet and the ice cream was cold, tart, and fresh. My only criticism is that I wish the chicken sandwich was a little bit spicier. ALSO TO THE OWNERS A larger sign up or more advertisement may help you guys a lot! I have lived in SB for a long time and had no idea this wonderful little place existed. I would give it 6 stars if I could.

Went into this restaurant based on yelp photos and reviews and were impressed by the delicious cocktails, as well as the amazing house wings. The duck salad and crispy rice salad are both very tasty. The back patio is cozy and is a great vibe for otherwise WASP-y State Street
Be the first to ReplyDelicious upscale Asian food right on State Street.
Outdoor patio with people eating and drinking and enjoying themselves. To-go portions are small for the price, but the food is delicious. The chicken wings are some of the best I've had, and the crispy rice salad is amazing. Chicken sando is nice and fried but lacking in flavor or sauce (if you added the wing sauce on it, it would be the best sando ever - if management is reading this, pretty please ). Papaya salad good. Tofu and broccoli decent. Short rib was delicious too. Overall would recommend!
