Service is ok, food is consistent and menu is overall a good take on Asian fusion for a happy hour spot. Incredibly hard to be able to get in though, and it tends to lean towards a loud and young crowd.

Great date night spot, mood lighting in effect, service is a bit slow but wait staff are friendly. Food was great, tried the tasting menu during restaurant week. Some dishes were above and beyond, some others were lacking, but the overall experience was
Great lil Asian-Fusion place that is lively & fun.
Went during a Meetup & didn't expect to see as many folks in 1 place but it worked. The food was tasty and the drinks were really good. Not a very big space but once the crowd thins out you can space out comfortably. Bartenders were great & attentive, although they were busy. Take home food was just as good as in the restaurant. Will be going back again to report a more detailed experience next time!
Went for happy hour and it was great.
Lomein portions are insane for the price, would definitely order again. Bartenders are all super friendly and attentive. Bar isn't huge though so a lot of people were waiting by the front for seats to open up . Would recommend getting there early for a seat.

I went with a party of five last Friday and had a really top-shelf evening out. The place, which has been an in-demand Philly dining spot for over a decade now, is still hot and does serious business on weekend nights; we showed up about 15 minutes early for our 7:30 reservation and were unable to find bar space, let alone get seated early; we wound up doing some ample waiting until being seated somewhere around 7:45/7:50. Thankfully, that was where the last subpar moment of the experience. They immediately were so good as to bring us out a complimentary serving of the edamame dumplings as thanks for having waited, and they were the first of a long train of delicious items that graced our table. We'd been planning to include them in our order already, so the delicate, flavorful treats were definitely a welcome gift! The restaurant offers an appealing Chef's Tasting Menu for $55, but we decided to just go all in on a whatever-we-wanted ala cart order that came to include General Tso Soup Dumplings, Shortrib Dumplings, Pork Bao, Korean BBQ Satay, Kung Pao Chicken Wings, Hamachi Ceviche, Tempura Cauliflower, Roasted Broccoli, Kim Chee Fried Rice, the Szechuan Chicken Stir Fry, and Shrimp Pad Thai. So yes, we covered some ground on this menu, and were pleased with every item we received. The service was well handled, allowing for lulls in the frenzy to digest, talk, and get excited again for the next round of dishes. For how crowded it remained through our time there, they did a good job of keeping on top of our drink situation, too. The standout in that area was by far the Kantoi Road tequila cocktail with tamarind, citrus, and charred chili - those delicious things go down with perilous ease! Someone at the table ordered a Hokkaido's Gift, the gin cocktail, and I will say that was less well received; I think the smoked tea that's the most prominent flavor is just a bit more of an acquired taste. Back to the food, I would say highlights for me included the Soup Dumplings (I wasn't sure how General Tso would translate to soup dumpling form, but they do it in a way that tastes appropriate and doesn't let the General side overwhelm the soup dumpling aspect, since they're not supposed to include an overly heavy or gimmicky broth), the wings, the Ceviche, the cauliflower, and the broccoli. The tempura cauliflower was so crisp on the outside and borderline meaty on the inside, and the pine nut, white soy, and garlic broccoli was some of the best broccoli I've had since starting to eat it more frequently a few years ago. But to even cut off the highlights at what I mentioned above feels like a disservice to the rest of what we ordered, because it leaves off things like the fall apart-tender satay and the unexpectedly subtle fried rice. We spent what must have been close to a solid two hours at the table and had a blast. Highly recommended (now to do their beloved happy hour....).

Came in on a Tuesday evening at 7:30pm and it was packed! So glad we had a reservation because the wait would have been 45 minutes! We went with the chef's tasting menu for $55 per person (7 dish selections and mini cones for desert). Service: John, our *very cute* waiter, was extremely pleasant and knowledgeable about the entire menu. He answered all of our questions and helped make the selection process very easy. Most of the food came out within a reasonable time frame, then there was a 20+ minute lull, after which our last 3 dishes arrived at the same time. Food: everything we ordered was delicious - pictures below. I didn't try the Szechuan chicken though because it was cut into large chunks that looked like tofu, but I assume it tasted good too... We had ample food for 2 people and even had to box some of it to go. Ambience: a bit loud because the place was packed. However, we were still able to have a conversation and I believe this is a great spot for friends and/or dates. Dimly lit, candles on tables, etc. All in all, it was a lovely experience and would love to return. John told us about their happy hour (7 days a week) and I will definitely try that. Special shout out to John because he took such good care of us!!!

I went here today for happy hour and I think it's the best
I went here today for happy hour and I think it's the best in the city. I am from Philly and didn't know about this amazing gem until my friend told me. I was seated quickly at 4pm when they opened and the waitress was so nice. Service was quick also. The food came out so fast fast.
We had dinner here as a group of 5.
We ended up splitting a bunch of plates and everything was delicious. Faves include: soup dumplings, pork bao buns, and the Korean beef satay. It was very dark inside so it was difficult to see menus, and a bit loud, but otherwise still a top dinner spot in Philly!
A party for your sense
What a find. This is a great place for dining with an amazing tasting menu of 7 different items for a very reasonable price. Each dish was a taste sensation!
Amazing Meal
From their website, ‘Michael Schulson is the chef and restaurateur behind the Schulson Collective restaurant group whose imagination and vision have made him one of Philadelphia’s most successful hospitality professionals. In 2008, Schulson opened his first restaurant, Izakaya, a modern Japanese pub in Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. At Borgata, Schulson found himself among the likes of Bobby Flay and Wolfgang Puck, earning rave reviews and immense popularity. He opened his second restaurant, Sampan, in 2009 in Philadelphia’s bustling Midtown Village. The contemporary Asian restaurant and bar was promptly named one of Bon Appetit’s “Top Six places to Taste Asian Fusion,” and Schulson was named one of Esquire’s “Chefs to Watch” in their annual restaurant issue soon after. Sampan is an oasis of contemporary Asian small plates located in the heart of Center City, Philadelphia’s hot Midtown Village neighborhood. A dramatic back-lit wall mural sets the scene for artful food, emerging from the restaurant’s centrally located open kitchen while a carefully curated selection of wine, beer, sake and cocktails compliment guests’ experiences.’ After coming to Philadelphia 2009, Michael Schulson has been on a tear and Schulson Collective restaurant group is a major player in the area as well as expanding to Miami, FL recently. One man may have a vision, but it takes a team to play the game. Since the group brought on Michael Parisi in 2016 as Chief Financial Officer at Schulson Collective the group’s expansion, dominance at excellence, and fortune have increased tremendously. They also have stamped their place as a constant contender to be the location to see and be seen in the region. The entire team is on fire, yet their attention to detail has not slowed down one bit. Even though Sampan has been open since 2009 and has consistently been named one of Philadelphia’s Best Of for numerous awards and is always a very popular Happy Hour destination, I somehow missed the memo to visit. The message was finally received and they are just as fantastic as ever. From start to finish this was dining at its finest. From sitting down exactly at reservation time, decor, ambiance, service, food, pace of meal, and price point everything was hitting perfectly on all cylinders. To perform at such a high level after all these years and many other restaurant openings in different areas and markets speaks to the dedication of leadership from the top all the way to the bottom with everyone still believing and executing the vision. Job well done to everyone involved and our server Jonathan was great. Enough of the blah, blah, blah now to get to the food. Really enjoyed everything. Huge highlight was the General Tso Soup Dumpling. I have been to many places that say they specialize in soup dumplings that weren’t half as good as these and it was just as fun eating these as when I visited Din Tai Fung in Taipei, Taiwan. Another shining star are the Kung Pao Chicken Wings. Again anyone who serves wings should take notice. Crispy on the outside, super juicy on the inside, and a flavor that just pops with every single bite. The Wagyu Beef Satay was no slacker either. You can tell a happy cow makes a delicious piece of meat on a stick and they are so tender and yummy. Beef Short Rib Lo Mein was a delight with the beef able to be cut with the chopsticks and noodles seasoned wonderfully. It was a joy to eat every bite. The Roasted Branzino was truly delectable and green beans were a magical treat to eat. Something a little different was the kim chee fried rice that was a nice side dish and the crispy spring roll was good. A wonderful treat was the ice cream. Vanilla Swedish Fish & Chocolate Cocoa Puffs were the perfect way to end the meal. Sampan is a culinary gem of the Philadelphia dining scene and you should definitely give them a try or visit them once more if it has been awhile.
Great for happy hour!
Great happy hour specials! Vibrant and upbeat atmosphere. Brussel sprouts, chicken wings, and friend rice are all staples. Highly recommended.
Great tasting menu
We had diner with a large group and had the tasting menu. Must say everything tasted really good. Portions were however partially so large, that we couldn’t eat everything. Service was friendly and quick
