We met up with a friend who wanted to explore Manhattan's Chinatown. She picked Shanghai 21. She ordered and she ordered quite the spread. 2 orders of soup dumplings, 2 orders of shumai, squid in oyster sauce, I think, garlic snow peas, a fish, pork fried rice, a noodle dish, and a beef noodle soup. There was 5 of us! Lol, but I love that she ordered things that we wouldn't normally order with just the 4 of us like the snow peas. Soup dumplings were average. Shumai was average. I liked the squid. First time having snow peas like that. I loved them, although they were kinda sweet. I was thinking more of a oyster sauce and garlic deal like on chinese broccoli. The pork fried rice was so good. My favorite on the whole table besides the snow peas. The spicy beef noodle soup was good. Got it for my son, cuz he loves Taiwanese Beef Noodle soup, but I forgot we weren't at a Taiwanese restaurant. I just saw Beef noodle soup and my mind went there. Whoops. Anyway, I'm not sure if I would be back, but it was a decent place.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing place to try some Shanghainese food.
Buns were extremely soft, dumplings tasted fresh and the spice level for general tso's chicken was perfect. Servers were friendly, and super quick.

Food was amazing, glad we found this restaurant, the wait was worth it. I forgot to take pictures of the rest of the food, but everything was delicious.

Food was great and definitely worth the wait, which was half hour and I was told it would be.

Food was on point, liked the salt and pepper calamari, pork fried rice, kung pow pork and low main. Would def recommend and will be back again, restaurant was small and at 1:30 on a Wednesday we got last table. Worked out great.
Be the first to ReplyStumbled upon this place while exploring China town.
The hot and sour soup hit the spot since it was so cold outside, it had plenty of bamboo shoots, mushrooms and tofu. It was delicious! The soup dumplings had lots of pork and crab meat and were very filling. The wrapper was on the harder side and the skin still ripped easily so you have to be very careful when picking it up. Service was very quick and the inside of the restaurant was clean and it was nice to sit and eat.

One of the best spots in the city! Great service, fresh and amazing tasting food! The shengjian bao and the Szechuan shredded beef are a MUST TRY!!!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and consistent.
Know what you're going to get and the price point is okay.

Absolutely delicious Shanghai noodles, saucy and loaded with unctuous umami! The salt and pepper shrimp were served literally seconds from the deep frier, crisp, fresh, hot and not greasy! The sautéed greens in garlic were some of the best I've ever tasted with a marvelous sauce of garlic and soy. Service was fabulous- the host over delivered by telling us wait time about 30 minutes was actually only 20. Our order arrived to our table nicely timed with each dish seconds from the wok! Fun green colors on the photo screens made the vibe energized and fun! Judging from the smiles on the diners, Shanghai 21 is a top dining spot for Chinese Cuisine!
Be the first to ReplyCan't go wrong when you eat here.
Everytime I'm in Chinatown I stop here for string beans and soup dumplings. Very straight and to the point if it's not packed, but if it's packed I know it's gonna be a 15 minute wait which is fine, I just get a moon cake from the bakery around the corner or grab a bubble tea from the next street over. Food is always tasty and the service is always fast and they don't harass you to get out once you're done like some spots. Always take ppl here if they are visiting me and want to see Chinatown. Only thing I'll say is that over the years the skin on the soup dumplings are getting a bit thin and can sometimes be a bit overcooked to the point where when you lift the soup dumpling from the steamer basket they stick and once pulled fall apart. Other than that, again you can't go wrong here.
Be the first to ReplyGood food.
Service a bit surly. Ambiance is harried and super busy. Come here for the food.
Be the first to ReplyNot sure how or why I haven't left this place a review.
I've been going here for years, even before their now name of Shanghai 21. I've always had a good experience while here, with the staff being great consistently and enjoying what we have ordered off the menu. It's gotten busier and busier, solely based on my last few visits to this establishment. If you come in during a prime eating hour, definitely expect to wait for at least a little but. They serve water on the table, and you're ready to roll once you're sat at the table. Take a look at the menu, and there are plenty of options to choose from. Over the years, I've tried quote a few items and can't remember having a poor experience. I'll continue to keep coming here in the future. Unless the quality goes completely downhill, I'll continue to patronize their business. Do note: there is now a service charge automatically put on the bill.

We ate here after the Chinese New Year Parade and we didn't wait long to be sat. We had the salt and pepper squid and it was so yummy! Hot, crunchy, salty and peppery! The side of rice doesn't come with the entree but that's okay...the restaurant is nice and big and seats many tables. The servers were polite and I had a great time. Thank you Shanghai 21!

Waited to get to Chinatown to have some good lunch and so glad I waited. Wait was a little long for a late lunch (about 45 min for 3 people) but definitely well worth it. We started with some pork soup dumplings which had an amazing flavor just wish meat was a little more cooked. Place was clean. The service was ok servers gave you what you needed just were not friendly doing so. I asked for hot oil and server had no response and just walked away from me leaving me confused then walked back with the hot oil. Ordering and asking for more water and our tab went the same. You ask and they walk away without a word. Tip was included on our tab which explains the service. Food was definitely a 5 stars for everyone in my group. We shared the Shanghai lo mein and sesame chicken which was divine. Thai tea was ok. I would definitely go back to that restaurant for takeout next time I'm in NY.

On a recent visit to New York we were reading reviews and happened on this restaurant in Chinatown. Judging by the long line outside and the host is telling us we were 19th in line. It must be a good spot. It didn't help. It was also Chinese new year the restaurant itself was small. We decided to wait. The menu has quite a bit of dim sum options. We opted for steamed and fried dumplings, along with the scallion pancake, all of the dumplings arrive to the table, hot and fresh. The flavor was so good and satisfied our craving for Chinese food. We also ordered two entrées with rice, which were very good. One was a classic General Tso's chicken the most boring of all Chinese options or should I say safe? All in all definitely would recommend I probably would stay away from this place on the weekend and especially on the Chinese new year. Definitely an affordable option and a great spot for lunch.
Be the first to ReplyBest Chinese food I've ever had.
If you're looking for an authentic Chinese food this is one of the spots to visit. It's a few doors down or next to Wo Hop another hidden gem. I went one day, to dine in, and there was a 1 hour wait. I left and returned the next day, when it was raining, and there was only a 20 minute wait. So expect to wait in line. You give your name, head outside and the waiting game begins with a number of foodie enthusiasts. Once they're ready for you, they'll call your name. If you're coming with a group, all parties need to be present for sit down. If other parties arrive after you've been seated, they won't be allowed to eat with you. Therefore, please plan accordingly. Once inside the space is very small but lively. Everyone is having table conversations and it's very cozy feeling. The food was wonderfully delicious and arrived fast. My favorite dish was the dried sautéed shredded beef. It had a good balance of sweet, heat and yet crunchy at the same time. The shrimp watercress dumplings, drenched in chill sauce, left me yearning for more once done. The scallion pancakes was very crispy and had a good oniony flavor. The menu has an abundance of items to order to satisfy any craving. I definitely recommended this place in the China Town area. Going by train is best since parking, like most places in NY, is limited. Enjoy!!!!

Highly recommend Black Truffle Soup Dumpling and Szechuan Wontons. Also, the Pork Fried Buns. Long wait times but worth the food.
Be the first to ReplyWow, such good food for decent price considering it's NYC.
I had the General Tao's and wife had the chicken with crispy noodles in brown sauce. The wait was an hour on a Sunday afternoon at 2pm but worth the wait!

5/5 food4/5 price5/5 staff4/5 locationI did not realize how bad the scallion pancakes that I made at home were until I had the real deal here. The texture was spot on with a crispy outside and chewy inside without feeling too over fired. The sauce had a tangy, umami, and salty mix that worked really well. The amount too was really great- enough to feel a few people (or if you were loving them as much as I was, just one). I also ended up getting the vegetable pan fried dumplings which were great as well! The dough had just enough bite to it to have a nice chewy texture and the filling was nice and savory and went well with the sauce. One of the little details that I appreciate is that the dough is green on the vegetarian dumplings so you and the server can easily tell.

Knew I had to come when I saw Black Truffle Soup Dumplings on the menu, and they did not disappoint! They were definitely well-balanced, with the truffle not coming across too strong or too weak. Those, and the other assorted soup dumplings and buns we ordered, were well worth the 1 hour+ outdoor wait in balmy January weather. (There was too much going on at the table to take photos )

Be the first to ReplyI really loved this place.
I had to wait for a table but was sat by a friendly man and had a pot of tea already waiting on my cold self. I only tried 2 apps but both were worthy. Hands down you gotta go.

It's a beautiful place to spend with your loved ones, the food is also tradition compared to ones in China. I highly recommend it and want everyone to try it! Thank you kai!
Be the first to ReplySolid place to get food.
Ordered the pork soup dumplings, lo mein, rice cakes with preserved pork and veggies, and bok choy with garlic. Everything was good. My non Asian friend particularly enjoyed the rice cakes with preserved pork and veggies. She also happily doggy bagged the unfinished items. Just note that they only take cash. And one thing to make the soup dumplings better is if we somehow could have had our individual vinegar or some kind of small spoon for the vinegar because then the only way to get vinegar would have been to pour it out of the sauce tray. And that would have been awkward.

This place is more expensive and not as great as I remember, but definitely a solid one in Chinatown. Wait times can get pretty rough so I would try to get there around 6 if you can. Not cash only they accept card.
