Sierra Mar Big Sur Reviews from The Last Year
Amazing restaurant with a spectacular view! I mean it was
Amazing restaurant with a spectacular view! I mean it was breath taking! If it's your first time dining at Sierra Mar I recommend asking for an ocean view seating by the glass windows. They also have open balcony seats where you can get go outside to experience the beautiful ocean view and fresh air. For lunch we had the prefix menu. It's a farm to kitchen theme. The food was fresh and organic, packed with bursting flavors. Spending our anniversary here was so special. I can't get over how stunning the views were and how zen the ambience is. Truly a special property and a place to enjoy with your loved ones.
A Wonderful Dining Experience in Big Sur
This was my 1st visit and it won't be my last. I travel solo, so many restaurants that are high end make it difficult to make a reservation for only one person, not this place. When I arrived, I was greeted warmly and made to feel most welcome. The service/waiter was attentive, friendly and kind. The food, after tasting each course, was beyond perfect and delicious, it was as if I've never tasted food before going here and then suddenly POW a blast of delicious flavor, perfectly seasoned, perfect portions and beautifully arranged dishes, I am still in awe of this dining experience. The chef was kind and sent out compliments of the chef a delicious vegan soup. I can't say enough positive words about the food, service and of course the beautiful views/atmosphere. I know this will be my new to go to place for dining whenever I visit Big Sur for now on.

The food was mediocre and bland, but the views almost made it worth it. The entree portion of the 3 course meal was snack-sized and not what I expected for the price.
Had lunch here and everything was really good.
View is breathtaking. Restaurant is nice. Staff was welcoming. Good experience.
Go for it.
Came here on Saturday for lunch and it was as beautiful as in the photos. Every table provides a great view of the ocean. Service was perfect and I really appreciated how attentive the staff was. We had the pre-fix lunch which did not disappoint ..portions are generous and full of flavors. Probably the best baba ganoush I've ever had !! Only thing I'd warn about is the dress code- there isn't one. There were people in robes and people who were dressed nice. It didn't bother me, however, be prepared if you're coming here. Ladies- you will need to walk up stairs and a tad bit uphill so dress accordingly.

Delicious food, items I would not have normally tried were available due to a fixed menu. The smaller portions were perfect with the amount of courses offered. Service was quick, professional, and friendly. You can't beat the views. Great romantic spot!
Amazing dinner.
If you're anywhere near Bug Sur (and we weren't that close), it's worth finding your way to Sierra Mar. the food was delicious, presented in an elegant but accessible way by lovely waitstaff, the wine list is fabulous and the room has a cozy but upscale feel. There were three of us - two pescatarians and one vegetarian - and although the prix fixe menu had a few meats and fish, the kitchen had no problem making the necessary adjustments to accommodate us. A very special meal and I'd gladly go back.
Continuing the tradition of local fine dining with California cuisine
Fixed price menu. Every course delicious! Locally grown vegetables were especially delicious. Especially nice for a couple having a romantic dinner.
If you not a hotel guest, wouldn’t recommend
We went for an early New Year’s Eve dinner so we could celebrate later at home. We called ahead to make sure we could have a drink and watch sunset and were told we could come a half hour before our reservation. We arrived a half hour early only to be told they were transitioning and we could not enter restaurant. We stood outside for a half hour with no welcome, no apology, no warmth at all from staff after being given information that wasted our time. They didn’t even come get us when we were in their eyesight when they opened. When we were seated, we saw people at the bar - so basically even if you are going to pay over $1200 for dinner and drinks (our final tab for 4), that’s not enough to qualify for a seat at the bar. So don’t bother if you are not staying at hotel, if you read through reviews you will see we weren’t the only one with this experience. Our waitress was sweet, but besides that, evening and food was average at best. A couple of the dim sum were tasty bites, but the short rib was as tough as pot roast. I am normally happy to spend on good food and special experiences. This was neither.
If I could give this place 0 stars I would.
My husband and I came last night for dinner and it was horrendous. First off, I paid a $200 deposit to hold a spot for NYE and when we got the bill they told me my deposit was only $100 and the remaining balance from our food was $416. I confirmed with Amex today that I did, in fact, pay $200. They are LIARS. Next, the food was disgusting. We are kosher, meaning we can't do any shellfish or meat, and the only vegan thing they could think of was mushrooms and jackfruit. We told them a month in advance we have dietary restrictions and they said they'd accommodate us. There was legit zero accommodations. For $500 we got pigeon food. Our main dish was a salmon, which was practically sashimi. It was RAW, and cold. We left and went to McDonald's. This place is not worth even $50. Save your time and money and don't eat here.

Sierra Mar is an extraordinary restaurant with delicious, exquisitely prepared meals. The restaurant's wine list offers a wide selection of fine wines. A view of the ocean adds to the fine dining experience. I highly recommend Sierra Mar!
Kind of a let down.
Last time I was here Chef Elizabeth Murray was EC and the menu was a lot more thoughtful. Everything tasted good, but was boring. We started with oysters which had a pretty standard mignonette that was tasty and they were fresh. The bread course was pita bread with an assortment of hummus, cashew cream, some eggplant puree, with jardiniere that were kind of sad and dried out. These plates were sitting assembled in the window when we arrived, when we got it it was all room temp (I'm assuming because of the multiple elements they take too long to make to order, but it was not a good look) The salad course was a family style garden salad with ranch, like a huge huge salad for two people, the ranch was good but not creative at all. I ordered fish, which was salmon, again not very creative, and my husband got the flat iron steak which had a very large chewy tendon running through the meat. The sides of creamed spinach and market vegetables was delicious but again boring. Everything was good, cocktails were fine, and the sommelier recommended a Chablis with the fish which was good. I was disappointed to not find a single local mushroom, even though there are chanterelles and porcinis on the peninsula already, and we are coming into foraging season. Again everything was just okay. Service was very very good, the food runner explained every item and the table was quickly reset for each course, and we even got a sweet 'Happy Anniversary' on our menu which was a nice touch. Next time we will come for dinner instead but then you miss the beautiful view. It was also one million degrees celsius at our table even with the small fan next to us.

Don't come here at NIGHT! We were in Big Sur for our maternity photoshoot and left Pfeiffer beach at sunset. I hopped on open table and saw Sierra Mar $$$$ checked out the photos and figured you can't go wrong. Well it was an interesting experience. Started with getting lost on the way up because there are no lights. Took us 10 mins to find the restaurant and we only did because we kept circling around when someone from valet finally flagged us down (no one was there the first time we pulled up). I should have definitely not worn heels because the stairs were intense for being 5 months pregnant. Once we finally made it inside we got a corner seat by the glass windows to stare at nothing but pitch black I imagine during the day or even sunset is breathtaking... but we came at 5:45pm and had zero view. We ordered drinks.. had to remind the server of my drink because it took a while to come out. SIERRA MAR IS A FIXED MENU. I didn't realize when I found the place but it was the closest to our photoshoot location and I was starving. Tip** Make sure you ask for your food to be plated separately because some plates are shared and some are individual. I was thrown off by the shared vs. individual because most fixed menus or course dinners you get your own dishes. I brought it up to our servers attention and he suggested to have it plated separately. Which helped a lot moving forward. Trust me on this one! For such small portions having to share tricks the mind into thinking you're getting jipped even if they are all measured out accordingly. Anyways the manager Jaime stopped by because she was informed I'm sure by the server and she even offered to bring out an addition dish. Which was so sweet but by this point I was just over it. If I were to ever come back it would be during sunset because I can only imagine the view. But I probably won't ever be back and wouldn't recommend to my family or friends. Food was good my favorite was the fish!
Gorgeous sunset view from Sierra Mar restaurant
We celebrated our 10 year Wedding Anniversary at Sierra Mar restaurant. Excellent staff who go above and beyond to make you feel welcome.
No more Sierra Mar or Post Ranch Inn for us
In the few hours since we left Sierra Mar, I have thought back and tried to count up the times we had gone to the Post Ranch Inn. We are still at the Concours d’Elegance 2023 and no access to all my records at home for accuracy so you will have to just take my word for it. I became aware of the place because of, as usual, the architecture. I believe our first visit there on a drive down from our real trip West to Pebble Beach would have been before 2000. We got as far as we could, and decided one day we would go back. Finally we worked up our nerve and I think it was 2014 because I just ran across the picture of me eating that strange sandwich they made…two of them for us, with preserves in it. We were given a backback and I guess they thought we would walk around the property…wrong! We were turned down on the Lexus we had hoped for, even though we had one at home, got in the rental car and drove down Ocean Avenue, and I felt myself begin to relax as we went thru the Carmel gate and we ate our sandwiches on the bench overlooking the golfers finishing the 18th hole at Pebble. All that nature stuff we had done to our satisfaction the day before since our room was not ready at check in time and we covered the whole property! Even though we live in a city, I had a farm four hours away from that and I told myself, we could have done this at home! So that weekend in 2014 was cold and there was fog. I also remember the breakfast…the waffle the young man made for me was barely cooked in the middle, doughy. I asked him to make another. The evening meals were ok, but of course so slow. We have eaten dinner maybe three times separately there, always my idea. My poor husband, I can tell he is silently suffering! It is almost not worth it. And then the fun lunches on the patio…we have had those maybe three times. I remember the French fries in a cone. A galling thing that sticks with me is the time we got to the area very early so we passed it by and went to Nepenthe. I wanted to see the view but you needed to buy something to get to that point. We got glasses of wine. Then on to Sierra Mar. Now we are ordering our dinner and I tell the waiter that looks a lot like Mario Batali the glass of wine that I want. Since he knows what we are to be eating, he overrides me and says no, I really should have this other thing. Wow! I said ok. The glass came and ever cautious of my liver, I only drank about half of it. Well, as we were driving back to the Lodge, my husband said the meal was $300. What?!! I think we were charged for a whole bottle of wine. Why he didn’t mention this to me while we were there I will never know but I am certain we were taken, And so with that in place I get to lunch yesterday…so excited. As we waited for the man to drive us to the top, I said maybe they had openings for dinner, we had two open nights! Bad idea as it turns out. We had the prix fixe lunch, the only option. The bourbon cocktail tasted ok but had no strength to it. The appetizer and salad were nice and attractive but we were there for the cheeseburgers and French fries. Well, when I bit into that supposedly medium rare cheeseburger it was well done. How can a place supposedly at this level not know how to cook a cheeseburger? They certainly did at the Tap Room at the Lodge. I made a picture, hope I can get it inserted. I mentioned it twice to the waiter, he smiled apologetically and that was it. We shall never return. We had debated a trip back, my husband wants to have a weekend in one of those treehouses. Not anymore. We are done. In NYC in June we ate at Union Square Cafe, one of our favorites. The waiter explained in great detail that the pork chop I ordered would be served with a pink middle and it was perfectly safe. When it arrived, I was having trouble cutting it, and thought I had a dull knife. Upon inspection I realized the pork chop was not pink in the middle at all, it was well done and a bit dry. I didn’t say anything but labored through it. When the waiter came to clear our table, since he never checked to see how we were doing, I mentioned that the pork chop was not pink at all and I had trouble cutting it. He took away our plates and in a few minutes he came back and said my entree would be taken off our check. That is how to run a restaurant. We will return there, but not to Sierra Mar. Hope you can see the inside of that cheeseburger, clearly not medium rare.
Cross finger for the view !
You come here for the view … and you are not sure to see it 😉 … but what is sure is that you plate will be as inspiring that the view ! Congrats for the chef for the selection of local produce and great inspiration … A must see (or not)
Worth Every Penny - Once in A Lifetime Place to Dine
A truly special place. Food great. Staff great. Setting and view - without rival. We had the table in the corner, two floor to ceiling windows met at a right angle and our table-for two tucked in the fold. We looked north and south over Big Sur, at Sunset. Mother Nature did not disappoint. Expensive, but not crazy. We stayed away from wine and spirits. Who needs alcohol with Mother Nature putting on such a show.
Fabulous food, romantic setting, great service, privacy respected and remarkable memories made.
We had breakfast, lunch and dinner here. The food was absolutely delectable. It was beautifully plated. Sauces were superb and the dinner was over the top (should be Michelin Star rated). Servers, manager, chefs, hostess and Sommelier were lovely, professional staff. The gardener that grows many of their vegetables was fun to talk to as well. We visited the garden and were delighted at the variety of great food grown for the restaurant. The ocean view is one of the most stunning since we actually were perched above the ocean.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
