Sixpenny Stanmore Reviews
Sixpenny .
..I have ever experienced such intimate service. The staff were so attentive, knowledgeable (sommelier), intuitive or flexible. We couldn't fault our experience. It was a special evening for my husband and I. A belated birthday celebration for him. The whole experience was the epitome of finesse. We feel so fortunate to have Sixpenny as a local. And although, this was our first experience we will return! Hopefully the staff are reading my review. You guys were so professional, sharp and ..."Copy review Please
Jaw Drop Amazing
We had been meaning to try this little place for quite a while, and finally secured a Sunday lunch session. The reviews below convinced us, and most are spot on. It's the most inconspicuous little terrace restaurant, with simply spaced tables, and room to breathe, and then slowly this place starts to reveal itself, and charm and its talent. One had the lead in wine pairing, I had the sake pairing and we shared the glasses. Then we took a deep breath and let them lead us through the afternoon. Correct about the staff - friendly, fun, expertly guiding the afternoon, with chefs explaining each course passionately. Snacks to start. What restaurant can pull of no cutlery for the first 3 dishes? Yes we took photos of food before we ate it, yes we are geeks and scored each plate, yes with each course and drink we realised we were getting drunk in the best possible way. I won't explain the dishes, just let it be known that as a lover of cooking, I'm now a bit deflated cooking in my own kitchen - and I thought I was a minor talent n the kitchen, but no more. I only regret not getting the names of the people who served us, as I wanted to take them home and be friends with them. Tetsuyas was one of the best meals I am grateful to have experienced. And now Sixpenny matches (exceeds?) this culinary masterpiece that knocked us both into orbit. You know that film Ratatouille where the critic cried into the plate he was reviewing? We felt a bit like that. You get what you paid for, and worth every (Six) penny. Bravo.
Outstanding lunch!
The overall experience was outstanding. The restaurant used a lot of fermented ingredients, which was unique and delicious. The portions seemed small; however, the service totally deserves the highest accolades.
Lovely spot for a special occasion
Booked because my grandparents used to live around the corner; staff were lovely, and the wine was excellent; found the home made juices very herbaceous and probably would have preferred them a little sweeter. All of the dishes on the degustation menu were delicious and interesting, and it was good that they were spaced out because we were very full at the end - there's no way we could have had a drink with each course. The chefs who came and explained the dishes to us often seemed a little young, or maybe they were just nervous: it was fine, their food was great.
So glad we chose Sixpenny for a special Occasion
Sixpenny was a true dining experience. The ingenuity of the Chefs to produce some absolutely delicious, unique dishes and the alchemist who concocted the temperance beverages were a feature. The whole package, food, beverages and professional friendly service all tucked away in this intimate Stanmore location quite frankly surprised me. Sixpenny is βTop Shelfβ.
A must-go in Sydney as a foodie
The overall experience is way above fabulous. The almost-4-hour journey led by the chefs was astonishing and enjoyable. Not only the snacks are delicious, main courses are also creative and full of great flavors. The chefs are particularly good at fermenting and aging. The roasted aged wagyu is one of the great samples which presented their high level of skills. The non-alcoholic juice pairing was fascinating and worked perfectly with the dishes which enhanced the flavors and aroma of the latter. Regarding environment and atmosphere, when we were guided in, the restaurant is almost full and the interior design is simple, classic and cozy. Indoor temperature is comfortable. People are eating and talking casually. Last but not least, service totally deserves highest rewards. Waitresses and waiters are hospitable and knowledgeable. And the chefs are more than great. Theyβre greatly passionate about their food and drinks. To sum up, this is a place you donβt want to miss in Sydney. Just come and enjoy!
Sixpenny does not disappoint. A true delight.
Very good flavour combinations. Relaxed cozy atmosphere. A very fun night. Drinks pairings were very nice. Our choices on the night were Aus wines, World wines, sake or non-alcoholic. In our group of 6 people, 4 did the world wines, 1 did the sake. 1 did the non alcoholic. We were all impressed to see the non alcoholic pairings were just as inventive as the food. We were all pleased with the food and drinks choices. A different sake was brought to match each course. So varied. Which was wonderful. I highly recommend.
sixpenny through an Americanβs eyes
Visiting from America we chose this restaurant based on their glowing reviews and we were not disappointed! The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was warm and comfortable. Youβll feel like youβre sitting in a cozy living room of a good friendβs home. We tried cocktails and oysters before moving into the set menu. We chose the Australian wine pairings and they were perfect. Their sommelier had great knowledge of all the wines and was easy to talk to. The courses were delicious and thoughtful, and although we left full we didnβt leave uncomfortably stuffed. Their use of fermentation is so incredible that it opens your mind up to what is possible when it comes to elevating dishes in a humble way. Treat yourself with this dining experience when visiting Sydney!
Incredible dining experience.
The interior of the restaurant had an elegant, calming and understated decor, perfect setting for the food which was absolutely first class. Every dish was amazing and surprising. The flavours were so unique that it was a delight trying to taste everything in each dish. The portion sizes were perfect, generous but not too much and the timing between the dishes equally perfect. The service was impeccable from the moment we walked in until we walked out. We chose not to have wine pairing and instead chose our own drinks but next time we go we will definitely do wine pairing. Cannot recommend this place enough.
Degustation Delight
We loved the active role the team from the kitchen played in describing each dish. It made the culinary experience that little bit more special.
Divine and dying to come back
This was a divine dinner experience, we loved it so much. The staff are all lovely, the chefs coming out to serve different dishes and explain their composition is a delightful detail. The dishes arenβt overly experimental to the point theyβre strange, theyβre perfectly balanced but also not like anything weβve had before. I recommend pacing yourself on the bread, as delicious and tempting as it is, the menu is copious so you want to have room for all the main dishes. The desserts are such a beautiful surprise, from start to end such a great story. We would be back every night if we could. The mandarin mocktail is heaven as well! A perfect place for a celebration.
Very good meal
Very good meal. The food and drinks were exceptional. The restaurant was beautiful and everything was perfect. The team went above and beyond.
Highly recommend
The food is spectacular. Got the tasting menu with wine pairing. The squid, cod and wagyu beef were fantastic. The food is beautiful and well presented. Overall great experience. Would highly recommend.
Came here with a couple of friends for dinner and
Came here with a couple of friends for dinner and absolutely loved it. The ambience the service and most of all the food is amazingly good. After having been disappointed with top end restaurants in Sydney I was not sure what to expect but, this place changed my perception from the first mouthful right through to the end. It was also the first time I have seen people present the dishes that looked the same but one was vegetarian. The mascarpone butter is divine here and probably the best butter I have had in Australia. We had three seafood courses, a meat course and two dessert courses with amouse and petit fours to start and finish the meal. The seafood courses were great and cooked to perfection. The roast pork was really good too with intense rich flavour. The dessert was just amazing and so tasty I had to lick my bowl ;-) the warm petit fours at the end were like the perfect end to an amazing meal. Service and food combined it's probably the best place in Sydney I have been to. Happily come here any day.
Another flawless restaurant since Sepia
The last flawless restaurant I visited like this one was Sepia which has sadly closed. Frankly, when I stepped foot into the restaurant, I was taken aback by the plain decor and setting. But then, the attention to detail of the whole evening experience did win me over completely in the end. Three snack dishes, three seafood dishes, one meat dish and two desserts each exhibiting delicate balance of flavours and cooking skills. Two sour dough bread was a bit of left field design and struck accord. I was so engaged with the experience that I forgot my standard end of meal ritual - the coffee.
Serious let down
This is an expensive, fixed-course restaurant. For the money, the customer is entitled to expect food that will sit up and make a statement, show flair and originality. Slabs of fish and meat just don't do that. While the quality of the ingredients was excellent, the dishes themselves often let the ingredients down. Japanese 'influences' are the current fashion in 'fine dining'. All very well if you have a well-grounded understanding of how these ingredients and touches operate to enhance flavours in Japanese cooking, otherwise you end up with an 'Hawaiian pizza' effect. The staff, while plentiful and attentive, were also forgetful (drinks ordered and not delivered) and rather cool in their manner (especially the females). Standing in a noisy room and muttering a list of ingredients, showing little concern for whether the customer is able to absorb the information, is second-rate. Greatly disappointed.
World Class
We came to Sixpenny on Thursday night for dinner. The meal was superb, and I would argue the best that I have ever tasted, and that includes Michelin rated restaurants and some of the best of London and Paris. Why do I say this? 1. The exceptional freshness of the various dishes. 2. The intensity of flavours. 3. The elegance of the components for each dish; not so many components as to overwhelm and a perfect marriage of ingredients which allowed for both the individual ingredient to shine while contributing to the synchronous result. 4. The elegant presentation of each dish. So many restaurants miss the mark by trying too hard to impress and fall into pretension. Sixpenny is simply elegant. The Spring Pea Tart with Whipped Goats Curd must take the prize for its stand-out burst of flavour and freshness. The Roasted Barley Koji Ice cream with Pear and Marsala was simply sensational. Thank you.
Unforgettable experience at a three-hatted restaurant in Sydney
Our first three-hatted dining experience here in Sydney, absolutely top-class food and service, also the portion is bigger than most fine-dining in Sydney, doesnβt feel like we spent 4 hours at the restaurant! Hope we can come back again, canβt wait!
One of the best in Sydney
Sixpenny is one of the best fine dining restaurants in Sydney for the finer taste. Although the venue is not big and looks already quite dated, but the service was superb although all tables were full. Most importantly the 6 courses of food served on the table tasted very good and finely seasoned. The presentation was not overly done like several other overrated venues with more emphasised on too much of gimmicky presentation but not tasting fine enough.
