Straight Wharf Restaurant Nantucket Reviews
Front of House Staff as "Salty" as the Food
Straight Wharf on Nantucket has long been one of my favorite restaurants, but my recent visit on a hot and humid Saturday night was nothing short of disappointing. Our evening started on the wrong foot when we were seated at a stiflingly hot table in a corner with no ceiling fan or open window. Despite our request for a better-ventilated table, the hostess could not move us. Her demeanor was snide and passive-aggressive. Her attitude only added to our discomfort, and we later overheard her talking about us as we left. The culinary disappointments followed swiftly. I began with a salad I had enjoyed the previous week, featuring local greens. This time, however, it was so heavily salted that it was inedible. Hoping for redemption with the scallops, one of my dining partners and I were further dismayed when they arrived cold. Upon sending them back, the kitchen's solution was to halve the scallops and return them looking like a hastily thrown-together mess. Some scallops appeared to have been removed from the plate, and the dish was devoid of the original sauce, yet still cold. We requested the dish be remade, but the third attempt was no betterโstill not hot and, again, excessively salty to the point of being inedible. The heavy hand with the salt ruined what should have been a showcase of fresh, New England seafood. Throughout the evening, a simple apology or a gesture of goodwill from the front-of-house staffโa complimentary cocktail or dessert, or at least removing the scallops from our billโwould have made a significant difference. Instead, we were met with indifference and rudeness, a stark contrast to the high standards we previously associated with Straight Wharf. They appeared to not care. This experience was a disappointing departure from the quality and service I have come to expect. Until significant improvements are made, I cannot recommend Straight Wharf. PS: Our waitress was very nice and tried hard to please.

As a local living on Nantucket, Straight Wharf has long been one of my favorite restaurants, however, my recent visit on a hot and humid Saturday night was nothing short of disappointing. The night started on the wrong foot when we were seated at a stiflingly hot table in a corner with no ceiling fan or air flow. (The worst table in the restaurant.) Despite our request for a better-ventilated table, the hostess was unable to help. We felt that her attitude toward us was snippy and patronizing, which only added to our discomfort. Plus, we overheard her talking about us when we left. The culinary disappointments followed swiftly. I began with a salad I had enjoyed the previous week, featuring local greens. This time, however, it was so heavily salted that it was completely inedible. Hoping for redemption with the scallops, which two of us ordered, we were further dismayed when they arrived cold. Upon sending both them back, the kitchen's solution was to halve the scallops and return them looking like a hastily thrown-together mess. Some scallops appeared to have been removed from the plate, and the dish was devoid of the original sauce, yet still cold. We requested the dish be remade, but the third attempt was no better--still not hot and, again, excessively salty to the point of being inedible. This experience was a disappointing departure from the quality and service I have come to expect. Until significant improvements are made, I cannot recommend Straight Wharf. PS: We loved our waitress. It was the front-of-house management and kitchen staff that failed.
Love this place.
My favorite restaurant in the island. Gabriel Frasca is really really good. Everything is freshly served (hot when it's supposed to be hot). Flavors are subtle and savory. Service is great and has improved over the years. Ambiance is fun and there's generally plenty of room. Great wine list.
Excellent service and food
This was our favorite meal across a few high end meals we had in Nantucket. The service, vibe and food were really good. Our table had a nice view of the waterfront. I would be mindful of how much to order as there a few amuse bouches, breads, etc. that meant we ended up ordering more food than we needed. The dessert also took an inordinate amount of time to arrive. But overall, a great dining experience.

Day trip from Provincetown, MA -- jumped the Hy-Line ferry from Hyannis to Nantucket and steps off the boat stumbled into this GEM. Bounty of seafood and fresh fish and sandwiches--- we had the lobster roll and fried fish sandwich. With onion rings and fries -- light, crisp -- fresh -- complements with the Peyrassol rosรฉ. Staff and service were friendly and wonderful! Will be back and highly recommend!

I recently dined at Straight Wharf and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience from start to finish. We were seated 25 minutes late despite having a reservation, which set a negative tone for the evening. The initial service was promising, but it deteriorated as the night progressed. Out of the eight dishes we ordered, only one was enjoyable and edible. The rest were bizarrely concocted with flavors and textures that simply did not harmonize. My fish was so dry it was inedible, which was particularly disheartening. We ordered: the daily Crudo, chicken under a brick, steak tartare, clam bake, Cavitelli pasta, Carrot cake, striped bass, as well as other dishes. All we're disappointments. I've never encountered such poor quality food at a restaurant touted to be of great quality, and I felt compelled to share my experience. Dining out should be a pleasant and memorable experience, but unfortunately, this was memorable for Well, of course, all the wrong reasons. I hope the restaurant takes this feedback seriously and makes necessary improvements.

Very romantic vibes both in the restaurant and out on the patio. Candlelight and cozy. Had it not been cloudy we would have had one hell of a view from the patio. The servers and staff were hard working and attentive. Our server made recommendations was knowledgeable and added value to our experience ( I would shout them out but can't recall their name.) It is a two course pre-fix. My husband doesn't eat seafood so there was less for him to choose from, but still options for chicken and steak. His steak wasn't the medium rare he ordered but not worth it to send back in. We tried two desserts, one was the carrot cake which was not an actual carrot cake. It wasn't my favorite, the other I don't remember a month later. All in all an enjoyable meal for a special occasion.
Just Upsetting
Man, I hate writing this review. Straight Wharf is one of my long time favorite restaurants on Nantucket. Ambience, staff, setting and vibe is all awesome. However you are there for the food! If you are going to charge Manhattan prices then you need to provide a product commiserate with that price. They are not doing that. I am not going to break down every little thing that was not up to par but if you are serving undercooked pasta, when there is only one pasta on the menu, there is something really wrong in the kitchen. I hope they can step up their game in the future. With so many options on Nantucket they can only rely on their location and history for so long๐ข.
Do not recommend.
Very disappointed. Read reviews and had high expectations however we will not recommend. 85.00 per person for a main dish is understandable but you are charged 85.00 if a person at your table chooses not to eat or the menu is not what they expected. Carrot cake was not edible and main choice portions were small. Too many other great restaurants in Nantucket.
Best Dinner!
Wonderful dinner and great service. The Fish Chowder was amazing--such wonderful flavors. We also enjoyed the swordfish tips.
One of our favorite restaurants during our visit.
We had a great experience here. We were seated in the main dining room. The tables were lovely with candles in hurricane vases and potted live herbs. The tables were fully occupied. Our server was attentive and efficient. Our meals were very good. I was a little disappointed that, because we were there during restaurant week, most restaurants had Price Fix menus which I thought did not offer the best choices. It seemed to me every restaurant we visited had chicken under a brick or something like that. I ended up getting a pasta dish but I liked it. My husband loved what he ordered which included oysters. It ended up being one of our favorite restaurants while we were in town.
Enjoyed a quality evening: nice atmosphere, good service.
Value is decent. Would return and recommend!
Competent, but unremarkable meal
I had a pretty poor meal at SWR last year and chalked it up to chance. We went again this year and while everything was acceptable, there wasnโt a hint of exceptional anything. At this price level ($83 price fixe for two courses), I would expect a more memorable meal as well as a bit more generosity with ingredients. By my calculations, SWR has one of the lowest food costs of any fine dining establishment on the island. I also wish the staff would lighten up a bit. Rigid stone-faced hospitality is so 2010s.
We were greeted and seated rite away , service was great

Always an exceptional meal and one of our top faves in Nantucket . I must say though that service can be spotty and definitely is on the slower side and we had to ask multiple times for a wine chiller. Also, the chef is adamant about keeping things the way they are so if you have any food intolerances know that no Accomodations or alterations will be made. I have a couple clients with gut issues and allergies that unfortunately can't dine here because they just are not accommodating and won't make any exceptions. They stick to the menu, so don't plan to ask for anything to be altered.
Good, but should have been better
The Straight Wharf has long been one of our favorite in Nantucket - but when the prices are this high, one hopes for everything to be excellent. Sadly, on this visit there were too many issues - I would give 3.5 stars if I could. First - the menu is Prix Fixe so this limits diners freedom to maybe split an appetizer or even order two appetizers instead of an app and an entree. Not everyone has a huge appetite. In order to have their cake and eat it too, they then add a supplemental charge on several of the choices. Why have prix fixe if the best items are extra, and there is not a reduction for vegetarian choices. It all seems contrived for maximal profit. A few glitches with the service: we ordered a bottle of wine and when our server came back about 15 minutes later to take our order, she announced that the sommelier was backed up and it would "be a while before we would get our wine". I protested against this as we wanted a glass before our food came - and magically the wine appeared 2 minutes later. My wife then asked if the Day Boat scallops are bay or sea scallops as she prefers bay. The waitress did not hesitate and stated they are bay scallops. Of course when the entree arrived they were huge sea scallops. At a restaurant of this calibre, the staff should be knowledgeable about the food. The food was very good but a bit lacking in flavor - especially the spice crusted catch of the day. The fish was good but the sauce and vegetables had absolutely no flavor of any kind. The scallops were good and our appetizers (the monkfish and salmon crude were also good. We did not have dessert. My wife could not finish her food. The setting is nice but neither the setting nor the food was as good as at Brant Point Grill, where we also dined. That restaurant was also less $$$$ per person as we split a half dozen oysters as an appetizer.
Great restaurant in Nantucket! Super close to the ferry but
Great restaurant in Nantucket! Super close to the ferry but you don't feel like you are because the vibes are amazing! My group didn't have a reservation but they were able to seat us in under 10 minutes outside. Super accommodating, we were a group of 7. They brought out amazing fresh bread and olive oil and the meals were great too! Definitely recommend the steak with summer corn salad, swordfish kebabs, and chicken pasta!
Ok but food lacked
Overall ok - apps were better than the entrees. Fixed price for $82 for an app and entree. Over priced. The entrees lacked flavor. I had the monkfish and my wife had the chicken both lacked character. Drinks were good snd ambiance was excellent. Good for those reasons but not the food. The 2% for the kitchen tax is minor bit just an add on I didnโt like. Service good / kids working hard and doing their best. Food fell short.
Hmmm
Firstly the service was wonderful. As was the ambiance. The value for your money is horrible. I had the Lobster Bake for my entree. $117. ($85 plus $32 supplement.) I expected the best Lobster of my life but alas. The lobster had no taste and was mushy. The sweet corn tasting sauce was was cloying. Disappointing. Husbands swordfish was terrific. The Galettte was outstanding
Consistently the best restaurant on Nantucket.
Highly recommend the lobster bake, which is a twist on a traditional dish. Great wine list, great service. Double check your bill as addition errors have been known to happen on their hand done checks.

***HEADS UP***This restaurant has a 2 course prix fixed menu, and does little to nothing to accommodate children. All that I can say to anyone considering to visit this restaurant ***READ THE FINE PRINT***. Booking your reservation through their online reservation system requires a credit card. This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip that my family was taking to celebrate a 70th birthday. Being new to the island, with two kids we booked this reservation online before our arrival. The night before our reservation, we received a text mentioning the 2 course menu. I tried to call the restaurant immediately that morning to discuss our options/express my concerns. They do not open until 5:30 pm so my only option was to simply cancel my reservation that morning online. Never heard from the restaurant until 11 DAYS AFTER our trip hitting us with a $350 bill for the late cancellation via an email. When I explained our reasoning, I was emailed links with 'fine text' outlining their policy. Not willing to work with me, or meet halfway given our situation. To make matters worse, it was all via email before business hours so that I cannot call the restaurant to discuss directly to the person. Very disappointed that 11 days after our trip to Nantucket this was the sour taste that has been left in our mouths. What happened to the customer coming first? What happened to communicating with a customer directly rather than through a computer screen. Terribly disappointed. Beware before you book. Not to mention the 'tone' of their emails extremely rude and condescending.
