Great food and lots of fun!
Absolutely loved this restaurant! Learnt the ‘process’ and the food was value for money and DELICIOUS. Friendly and helpful staff and lots included in the banquet menu.
Be the first to ReplyA great night out with friends
For our group of friends, this is a regular. You're not going to get a fine-dining experience, but that's what's absolutely great about it. Order your meats and premium items to share when you get there. Grab one of the many wait staff bustling by to get some drinks, and then fully load up on the help-yourself veggie and noodle options in the fridges at the front. Your soups will be delivered within 10 minutes, then it's just great eats and laughs and a good helping of seconds for most everyone. Always a brilliant night out.
Be the first to ReplySuan Suan hot pot great experience.
Great place, lovely helpful and patient staff as we had never experienced chines hot pot cooking before. Price good, kids loved it and plenty of choice. Would certainly go back.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced poor quality and service
Horrible restaurant. Way over priced for what you get. $50 for a soup. My friend ordered the spicy soup and it was covered in oil and she attempted to eat it but could not, when asked to change soup bases they said she would have to pay for a new soup despite that you could see she had hardly touched this one. She ended up eating just the sides. The menu said free soup refills and when I asked for a refill they filled my vegetarian soup with bone broth and had to get me a new soup. Note that free soup refill means broth not actually soup. When we spoke to the manager he was rude and blunt not offering any help. Poor customer service and poor quality of food. Would not recommend.

Don’t miss this culinary experience of Chinese hotpot. We had Wagyu beef plus all the imaginable extras. This restaurant would fit in well in any Capital City. Simply amazing experience.

Had a terrible experience tonight. When we tried to discuss our concerns with the staff we were told to not pay and to leave as we were ‘drunk’ after only consuming 1/2 a drink to wash down the disgusting food we ate. The seafood smelt off and was off colour, the chicken was slimy. Absolutely devastated as we were really excited to try this place after seeing all the great reviews. Hopefully the owner can learn to take on constructive criticism in the future instead of dismissing customers concerns especially when peoples health is at stake. Very disappointing considering my partner was sick before leaving the restaurant and I wasn’t that far behind him.

Absolutely love the food, the spicy broth is amazing. Can't understand some of the complaints about the variety and the quantity of food, it's literally a banquet. Beers are extraordinarily cheap too.

So much fresh and tasty things to try! The local discount was an extra bonus! I recommend trying the original soup base ad it was the tastiest. The staff where wonderful and attentive
Be the first to ReplyOK - but better choices available
Interesting to read some of the reviews here on TA - it's obvious that some of the negative reviews are unfounded, but also some of the positive reviews are way overstated. The fact is that this is a pretty average restaurant in terms of food quality and fairly expensive for what is served.
For our visit, the staff were great. Unless you've been here before it's difficult to know how the system works, but once it's explained it's simple enough. It's basically a buffet, but not one in which you go to the buffet table - you can keep selecting more options to be bought to your table for you to cook in your own personal hot pot. But that's only the basic selection which includes beef, chicken and a range of vegetables. And it's $45 per person for the basic buffet. And I have to say, at that price - it's very expensive for what you get.
We had two different types of soup base, and neither was fantastic. I had the traditional soup which was OK without being great. There are several Asian restaurants in Cairns with far, far better soups. Ganbaramba and Jenny's Chinese both spring to mind. If you are familiar with those places, their soups are streets ahead of Suan Suan. The noodles were also disappointing. I ordered the hand made noodles and they were just ordinary dried packet rice noodles. Another of my party ordered ramen noodles and received a little square block of those dried instant noodles you get in instant noodle packages, which was very disappointing.
It's also worth noting that the meat dishes are very small while the vegetable portions are very generous. The chicken was sliced so thin it was transparent and probably consisted of 20-30 grams of meat only. I realise hot pot meat should be thin sliced, but they've created a new art form in thin slicing here! It's possible to order more meat, but the menu has a whole page devoted to a warning to customers - if there are any leftovers they will be weighed and if there is more than 300 grams, the customer will be charged $50, which, they say, will be donated to charity. This is obviously unenforceable, but it does discourage you from ordering more food, especially when they've already delivered a mountain of vegetables.
If you want anything beyond the basic buffet offering, wagyu beef or seafood for example, you need to pay extra. We tried the duck tongues which cost an extra $9 and received 5 tongues, which was interesting, but in total amounted to about half a spoon full of food. So be careful with the extras, the price can build up quickly.
Taking the food alone, this is an average restaurant. Cooking your own food in an individual hot pot at the table is interesting enough, but the soup bases are OK without being great and the meat and vegetable ingredients are fresh but basic, without being premium. I would have given a 3 star rating on the food alone, but at $45 for what is basically a bowl of noodle soup, the cost is getting into the silly zone, even if soft drinks are included.
Really good experience
The staff are really helpful for first time visitors considering they are ESL. The manager is very kind. Great food and service. We went on buffet night and got basic buffet with no add ons, it's so affordable and good quality. Beware ordering too much it's easy to do! Stick to one meat and only a few seafood for party of two. Home made noodles were soo good must try

Came here with friends for dinner. Glad we booked because it got pretty busy. Great restaurant and excellent way to dine. Hot pots were fantastic, easily able to order heaps of food. Great value for money, was so full at the end!! It’s BYO and they also sell some beers, but am surprised they don’t sell Soju there, would be pretty easy if they’ve already got a license.

Be the first to ReplyIf your expecting what us
If your expecting what us Brits would call a traditional Chinese Restaurant, this isn’t that. It’s so much more. The food is exceptional. Both my wife and I chose two different “soups “. Both varying degrees of spice. You then build your own food. We had beef, chicken, prawns. You name it we had it it’s a little messy but we’ll worth it.
Be the first to ReplyGreat meals...... As usuak
One of my favourite restaurants in Cairns. Spicy hotpot is fantastic though others in my family enjoy mushrooms and traditional (all fantastic). One of my favourite parts of the meal are the handmade noodles. Add some lamb, potatoes etc and you have a wonderful meal. Staff are always friendly. Highly recommended for both tourists and locals.
