2/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Sophara S. on 05/18/2025

My husband surprised me with a birthday dinner here, and I was both excited and a little nervous when I realized it was an omakase spot. I'm still pretty new to eating raw fish, and I was a bit stressed at first because I knew how expensive the place was and didn't want to waste anything if I didn't like it. I'm definitely a try-everything-once kind of girl, which I think is why my husband thought it'd be a fun adventure. When we were seated (the staff at the front was really nice, by the way), I told my husband how I was feeling, and he reassured me that if there was anything I didn't like, he'd just eat it for me. He also suggested I ask if they could torch some of mine to make it a little less intimidating, so I did. But when I asked, the waiter responded very loudly and rudely, saying you cannot make any changes to the food--and it came off super condescending. It totally caught me off guard and honestly embarrassed me. It's a small, quiet restaurant, so everyone heard and stared. That moment kind of ruined the vibe for me before the meal even started. I understand if changes aren't allowed (it's omakase, I get it), but the way he said it felt unnecessary. He could've just explained it in a normal tone and I would've said okay, no problem. The food itself was good, nothing crazy outstanding--I did try everything, though I did pass one piece to my husband. The sushi chefs were really nice and seemed passionate about their work, but overall, the waitstaff just didn't feel friendly or attentive the entire meal. We got the whiskey flight pairing with our meal too and for such an upscale, intimate place, spending $700+, we expected better service I'm still glad I gave it a shot, but the way that one interaction was handled really stuck with me and made it hard to fully enjoy the experience. My husband and I agreed we wouldn't come back. There's other more affordable and better quality omakase options in seattle.

I'm a bariatric chick so I thought since it was going to be small single bites I would be good. I was ready to tap out after 11 lol but I pushed through and I stopped eating the rice. They also accommodated me with my limit by using less rice. Every bite was sensational and a whole experience. They were informative and the staff was super kind and so knowledgeable! The location was so aesthetically pleasing and intimate. I highly recommend this service and bring your appetite!

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Linda N. on 04/22/2025

This was our second time dining here, last visit was in the summer and we absolutely loved it so we knew we had to come back for another special occasion. The menu was different from last time, which was to be expected, but each sushi piece was delicious with unique flavors that went so well together. It was just as good as we remembered. They also added two extra complimentary welcome dishes at the beginning which we appreciated. Our chefs were engaging and funny, they made it a good time. Some of my personal favorites of the night were the mussel and uni shooter, the toro and the uni hand roll. It's a little pricy but you get a decent amount of food and is worth it for the high quality ingredients that they use. We will definitely keep coming back to this place.

Itโ€™s gone (way) downhill

2/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Sarah S on 04/12/2025

My fiancรฉ and I have been regulars at the Sushi by Scratch Seattle restaurant for three years. We used to love bringing out of town guests to experience the incredible menu chefโ€™s Kevin and Graham carefully curated over time. I work nearby, and weโ€™re sushi connoisseurs, so my fiancรฉ and I easily dined here 25+ times in the last year or two. It used to be our favorite restaurant in the city (we celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, and even our engagement this January at Scratch - often bringing 2-8 additional guests to join us for what used to be a truly incredible meal). The menu used to be inventive, yet subtle. Exciting, but not overpowering. The menu honored its fresh ingredients and highlighted their quality by serving each piece in a complementary order, and letting the food speak for itself. We were obsessed. Unfortunately, this month, everything changed. We were excited to see that Scratch had reopened, and happily booked a dinner for two last night. For some reason, corporate decided to throw away the beautiful menu from before, and institute a pretty bad line up served to us by a chef from their Austin location. He asked how we liked the new menu and jokingly threatened to put BBQ sauce on fish next time when we mentioned the (insane) amount of salt and spice on multiple pieces was a little overpowering. -_- Corporate has clearly taken over, and itโ€™s a shame. Sure, there are four welcome bites now instead of two- but none of them compared to the two from before. I didnโ€™t enjoy them and I didnโ€™t finish a single one (luckily my fiancรฉ was hungry and helped me hide the evidence). Why replace the perfect โ€˜tuna cannoliโ€™ welcome bite with a similar version in a โ€˜taco cupโ€™ form and add so much tobiko on top we canโ€™t taste the tuna? Why give us a cooked mussel on a toothpick with an umi โ€œsauceโ€ instead of the beautiful, delicate, fresh oyster from before? The egg custard was so salty and rich I was genuinely surprised it was on purpose. I canโ€™t remember the fourth biteโ€ฆ maybe thatโ€™s a good thing. The new menu we ate last night was truly disappointing. Each piece was a worse version of what used to be served. The matcha sea salt wouldโ€™ve been nice in 1/10th of the quantity. We missed the subtleties - a chiffonade herb, thoughtful use of the garlic confit, a grate of fresh ginger, etc. The โ€œfake wasabiโ€ gimmick from the Austin menu was plain bad. The pile of chili was too much. Why even bother serving the jellyfish?! Austin chef confirmed itโ€™s intended to be the fun gimmick piece of the menu - but it had no flavor, only an interesting texture, and no one bothered to try to make it make sense on what used to be a distinguished, curated omakase menu. So whatโ€™s the point? Even the wagyu bite ate like a burger, rather than the delicate preparation from before. Perhaps the intention is to make the menu โ€œmainstreamโ€? Might as well serve California rolls. The only part of the new menu we actually enjoyed was the sushi rice prepared fresh at each seating for guests. Iโ€™d give this up in a heartbeat to have the old menu back. Weโ€™re incredibly disappointed, and unlikely to return.

Welp with the recent report of this establishment operating without a permit and soooo many health violations I'm happy I can take the gloves off an be honest. Yea the experience and execution were high, for seattle. Buuuuutttt Escolar....wtaf is that? It's literally a trash fish that is so fatty it can make you sick. I've grilled it and my grill caught on fire from all the oil. Pro-tip if you see escolar on the menu 1.) At least they're being honest and not calling it super white tuna 2.) It's a big red flag walk the eff out, IMMEDIATELY! For what they are charging per person there is literally no excuse to run an operation so poorly. Wa my experience all smoke and mirrors? There's a reason you have to take courses and be certified to be a sushi chef in Japan. But no in the great old USA. Anyone with a knife and hustle can serve raw fish to people. For the money paid here Subi Kashiba, Hummingbird, Tamura (too name a few) are all better value. Given theire health score kaiten sushi is probably safer. But if you hate money and like a show....we'll go ahead and get your reservation now! This is sad but the red flags were there. I recall being very conflicted in my first review and am relieved I can speak openly given the new info.

I really enjoyed my experience here.

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Tim F. on 03/04/2025

I was expecting a full house with just 10 seats per serving, but there were only 7 of us. As a single diner, I knew I would be eating with strangers, but I was a bit disappointed to be crammed between two couples with less elbow room than an airplane middle seat. That's a minor nitpick amongst an otherwise extraordinary experience. The food was amazing. Each handcrafted piece was delicious by itself. The commentary was interesting, but not why I chose to eat here. I tried two new-to-me beers and enjoyed them both. Compared to the price of the rest of the experience, the $12 each price tag felt more reasonable. Other comments about leaving hungry are probably true. I had a large lunch in anticipation of this, and felt satisfied when I left. But had I shown up famished, I would definitely have been searching for post-dinner food, even after ordering the three extra pieces for $14 each. I'm not sure how they could solve this, and I don't need to leave with a feeling like I just gorged on a buffet, but for the $332 final bill for 1, the risk of leaving hungry definitely could sour the experience. Since I only visited this place during a trip to Seattle, it's unlikely I'll find myself here again any time soon, but it is definitely a place I'd return again.

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Ellie R. on 07/16/2024

Hands down the BEST omakase experience I've ever had in Seattle. A must visit for someone who looks for dining experiences with highly personalized service and unique items. It's definitely not the traditional omakase that just has your standard nigiri's, every single piece has a twist to it and we were blown away every single course. The ambiance was intimate and personalized. They wrote down our names on a card and also had a chef/service for every party explaining each dish. We also had free welcome drinks and two apps prior to getting seated, which all tasted amazing as well. 1000% worth the price and would absolutely go again!!

4/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Kelly N. on 07/02/2024

I've only had one other omakase experience before trying Sushi by Scratch for a surprise birthday dinner. That being said, it's a unique dining experience that can't really be compared to its 'traditional' counterparts. What mainly sets this place apart is the preparation and garnishes. All bites featured different techniques and flavors not usually found in omakase. We got some blow torch action, soy-cured fish, bone marrow, and toppings like dried seaweed and pickled red onion. My partner and I also got the optional caviar and truffle experience because neither of us had tried caviar before. Though delicious, I don't think it's necessary given most of the bites have toppings anyway. It was also an additional $100 per person. I would probably skip this (you can get nigiri add-ons later that are more worth it IMO). Overall, an enjoyable experience but a bit pricey compared to other omakase I've had. The chefs were friendly and the restaurant added some cute touches for my birthday including a special name plate and a candle with the final dessert dish. The aesthetic of the restaurant is also not my favorite, mostly just dark and industrial with some colorful lights.

We were looking forward to finally try their omakase.

3/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Mayu D. on 06/28/2024

Long story short, all of us felt that it's not worth coming back. Ambience - 4/5. Their private bar with lighting makes it cool. Service - 3/5. They lack on a special care. Drinks - 4/5. Their Japanese fusion cocktails were great! Sake is over priced, but that's expected. Sushi - 2/5. I honestly wanted to love this place. You have no idea how excited I was to try their sushi omakase finally. When we first got seated at the bar, I was quickly let down with the quality and choice of fish they were about to serve to us for the price we were paying for. But I decided to wait for the sushi chef to surprise us. Surprisingly, the fishy taste bothered me from the get-go, and all the sushi were over powered by seasoning and couldn't even enjoy each ingredients. I can see that this overly flavored sushi attracts sushi beginners, but they could not fool any one of us who have been eating all sorts of amazing sushi omakase in life. I'm really sad to say this, but I did not enjoy their sushi omakase experience. It was definitely 2 stars for me and is worth $50 to me. Not a few hundred dollars per person... I decided to give 3 stars as an overall score because of the ambiance and drinks. Also their sushi is not terrible, but they are so meh.... I have unfortunately no desire to come back here. If you are open to spend a few hundred dollars per person for sushi omakase, we all agreed that Kashiba or Taneda in Seattle would be the ones worth going back again and again.

As an artist and foodie, if you are looking for an immersive omakase sushi experience, book your reservation for Sushi by Scratch in Seattle a month in advance for a party of 5 to 10. Know that there are only 10 seats. Every detail from; the chefs service, to the menu, where they seat you, the warm towels that are provided, and to how your food is presented, only makes you realize that the meal and act of service is a whole production that is catered to their guests. The artistic place settings, to thoughtful preparation within the details of the flavors and order of sushi only leaves your palate yearning for more. The 18 course tasting menu is timed, but paced very well. Not to give too much away, as you should be surprised coming in. Arrive 30 minutes early for your complimentary cocktail, mention your food allergies and have your beginning two starters. Be mindful in ordering your drinks within a timely manner, as the rest of the guests will be waiting for you. The meal starts when all 10 guests have placed their first drink/cocktail of the night. Enjoy your first booking to Sushi by Scratch as I am sure it won't be your last. The chefs are very professional, artistic, attentive, and entertaining as they want you to have a good time. It truly is by far the best omakase meal I have had so far.

The food was delicious and everything was all around great from start to finish. When you arrive they have you wait and offer you some pre dinner bites / cocktails in the front room then they walk you into a side room where you will be begin your dinner. The chefs are very friendly and attentive, cleaning your bite plate after each piece. When everyone is served they announce what you will be trying. At the end they offered everyone a Polaroid with the menu and the chefs signatures. Overall the entire experience was very nice, I'd say the one negative about it was having to check out at the end in a line with the bartender.

I loved this modern take on an omakase! There were 19 dishes including two welcome dishes in the waiting/bar area before the main dining room and a dessert at the end. Mostly nigiri style with each dish dressed with unique sauces, techniques, and salts to make for a flavorful bite. No utensils are given as you are expected to eat with your hands. I also love how it's a speakeasy vibe where you have to ring a doorbell to get in. It feels so secretive and is a really great ambiance setting to start with! All of the sushi felt very well prepared, well thought out with how each piece was prepared, and also the sushi chefs preparing the dishes were all extremely friendly and welcoming. Everyone was having little conversations with customers which made for a warm and intimate experience. Highly recommend for a special occasion and fine dining experience!

If you want to make someone feel special, take her/him/them here. Not only was the food delicious, the entire experience from entry to service was remarkable. Harkening back to the old "Worth It" vids, it was so.worth.it. Make sure to arrive 30min early to take advantage of the welcome drink and two starter bites. In this case, it was oysters and a toro "cannoli". My friends and I had done many omakases before, but Kevin, the sushi chef in front of us assured us this would be different. And he was right. The creative toppings on each of the fish were surprising and delightful. If you want old school sushi where you just wanna taste the fish without all the fuss, this is not the place for you. But if you like tantalizing flavors, make your reservation as soon as you can. It's at least 6 weeks out before you can get in (at least for a group of 4). Well done, friends!

What an extraordinary Omakase experience! Since we were on vacation, we decided to splurge a little (plus to celebrate my belated birthday and our anniversary). The reservation process was super easy. When you book the reservation online, you have to pay a $25 per person deposit fee to hold your spot, but it'll be applied to your bill upon dining. There is also a mandatory 20% service charge. Beware, there is no sign to this restaurant so we circled the block a couple of times before we found the mysterious entrance lol. You have to ring the doorbell to get let inside. Once inside, you are seated at the bar area with other guests. You have the option of arriving 30 minutes prior to the actual omakase experience for a welcome drink and snacks. That is highly recommended ! The drink was refreshing and they gave two small appetizers so that's worth it. Once the chefs are ready, our bartender/server moved us to the next room. Such a mysterious and fun experience! The chefs are knowledgeable and have many years of experience of making sushi/nigiri. It was quite enjoyable talking to them! Sushi/fish quality was superb and the whole experience lasted about 2 hours. Because it was our anniversary, they took a Polaroid photo of us and gave us the menu with their signatures on it as a souvenir. Such a nice gesture! This was both our first times trying omakase and it way exceeded our expectations.

What are the best birthday dinners I've had in a long time was at sushi by scratch. The atmosphere service and food was incredible and I cannot recommend it enough. When first arriving, you go to a small bar area where you served a nice house cocktail, raw oyster on the half shell and a small bite. I would call the staging area before you go into the actual dining space in the next room. On the menu at the time we got to try 16 different sushi. These are my top 5: 1. Hamachi 2. Sake - Salmon 3. Madai 4. Ama Ebi 5. Albacore I'd have to say everything was so methodically crafted and well done by the sushi chef.. I could not have asked for a more delicious sushi dining experience for my birthday. I even made some friends with the girls sitting next to us at the bar. How fun! They also took our picture and signed the menu. So cute! Although my review is short, everything about this experience was nothing short of being memorable and amazing to me.

Sushi by Scratch offers a fantastic omakase dining experience!!! Reservation Online booking is essential for this hidden gem, disguised as a speakeasy. Once you get there, ring the doorbell for entry and enjoy their delightful yuzu ginger sake whiskey while awaiting your 17-course meal. Trust me, this drink blew my mind for someone who generally doesn't drink whiskey. Ambiance The waiting room exudes charm with paper lanterns and a cabinet stocked with a variety of alcohol, setting the perfect mood for your omakase journey. Food Led by the server to the chef-prepared dining area, the blackboard menu outlines the 16-course sushi lineup. Each crafted dish showcases the best part of the fish, complemented by unique spices. There is a personalized name tags to add a special touch. I truly enjoyed everything on the menu. If I have to pick, the highlights for me included unagi, bone marrow, madai, and albacore. Customer Service The chef's engaging demeanor and humor enhanced the dining experience. Sushi by Scratch delivers one of the best omakase experiences at a reasonable price point. Every dish was delicious, presentation was and we did have our own personal favorites too. Mine were the otoro, bone marrow and unagi. It was interesting how their omakase order went from fatty to lean to fatty again. A lot of omakase places I've tried goes from lean to fatty. Otherwise, the whole experience took about 2 hrs (30 mins pre and 1:30 omakase). They also had complementary marinated cucumbers on the side but I wished they offered some utensils to eat it.

There was one of there that tasted like a banh mi or pho. That one still stands out to me. Service: Everyone is friendly, the chefs were good at initiating conversation and keeping everything light and fun Ambiance When you first come in you're introduced to a small entry room. This is where you'll get the welcome cocktail and two starters. The second room is where the omakase happens. Both rooms are intimate and give off that classic elevated darker room vibe. Music is interesting too, like a japanese jazz type of music. Personally I loved it, the chefs were joking about hearing the music in their dreams though haha Recommendations Would highly recommend coming in early to not miss the welcome drink and food. We showed up about 15 minutes early to our omakase, not sure if they were waiting in us, but was nice since we were hungry and didn't have to wait on it! They have options for an additional $100-ish per person to add truffle and caviar to certain dishes if that's your thing. Everything tasted great already, so not worth it in my opinion. Overall would recommend coming here, a pricey dinner for sure. We ended up paying about $480 with no add ons, other drinks, just the base omakase price for two people. For special occasions it was a nice treat!

Celebrated my birthday at SBS with a surprise from my girlfriend, and it was an incredible experience. The 16-course omakase was an absolute 10/10. The staff was friendly, creating a wonderfully intimate atmosphere. Each bite was a new adventure, and I particularly loved the Akami, Otoro, and Unagi - pure bliss fr! The creativity and thought put into each dish were evident. Even though this was the largest sushi bill I've personally seen, the memorable dining experience makes it completely worth it. I'll def remember this dinner for a very long time.

I booked a Omakase experience for my partners boyfriend and it wasnt until the day of the reservation not but an hour before we were scheduled to be there that I realized I booked the wrong location! There was no way we were making it to Healdsburg from Seattle in a hour. I called the Healdsburg location and spoke with Max, the GM. He was so accommodating and was able to get us a reservation in Seattle the same day just an hour later! Amazing customer service, unique and intention experience from entry to the finale. The fish was so fresh, Chef Kevin delivered some unique experiences that had my taste buds dancing for joy. We will definitely be recommending Sushi by Scratch to all of our friends and family. We will definitely be visiting again soon! Thank you again to Chef Kevin and Max for making my partners birthday dinner so special.

It was my first omakase experience and was very happy about my experience. You have to make reservations a month in advance and I got very lucky and was able to get a reservation on my actual birthday. We started with some cocktails in the front room when we first arrive before heading into the main room. The staff were all very nice, we were able to chat and joke around with one of the sushi chefs in front of us. All the sushi were fresh and delicious, each different from the one before. There is a preset menu for the night that we follow. Intimate setting, there were about 10 spots per reservation.

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Jesse H. on 11/20/2023

The food was delicious and the drinks were 10/10 and I don't want to spoil the surprise, but I would describe it as creative and balanced. Instead of traditional ingredients that you would see from Japan, chef Kevin adds modern touch to the courses. However, the most memorable part of the meal were the chefs. Chef Andy, Kevin, and Han did an amazing job with prepping and talking with us at the same time. The atmosphere was fun, with lots of laughter between the us and chefs. I knew it was going to be a great time when Chef Andy understood our world of warcraft references haha I generally don't like whiskey, but ordered the whiskey flight anyways. It was great to go through all the different kinds of Japanese whiskey to confirm which ones I like and don't like. At the end, it had me thinking... maybe I don't hate all whiskeys.. Overall we had a great time and can't wait to go back. I cannot recommend this place enough!

It was fine

3/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Kelsey M on 10/13/2023

It was an overall fun experience, we had a nice date out and Iโ€™m glad we did itโ€ฆ would we do it again? No. For the price I feel like I can be a little critical. We have been to better omakase experiences in Seattle for significantly less money so I did have some expectations going in. Starting with the good, the service was perfect. Everything was timed, very attentive, friendly, lots of explanation of what was going on. We had the pleasure of sitting by the chef and he was fun to talk to while he was making all the pieces. The food was good, we are traditionalist for omakaseโ€ฆ everything tasted fine, some bites were great, while others were slightly confusing (example adding so much citrus so it tasted like an orange instead of fish). I was a fan, I just would never had paid what we did to have it. My husband did the sake pairing and he enjoyed it. Parking was super easy. It was a younger crowd, chatty/friendly. The neutral: went to canlis recently and this dinner was significantly more (close to $800 for two people). We did their standard seating for omakase, the sake add on, one $30 glass of wine, and added 3 additional chefs choice sushi at the end (this will add another $100 if you do it). It all added up, it was just surprising. The 20% gratuity is added on and well deserved. The bad: The atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired. From the ring doorbell on a unmarked door is strange, the DIY wood panels blocking the windows, the chairs to sit on in both areas arenโ€™t great, the bar led lighting when you walk in, there is a bright epson printer just hanging out etc etc. just not a vibe to me. Iโ€™ve been to much nicer bad restaurants. We had a couple on the other end of us arguing as they had more drinks, they just kept getting louder and louder. They never stopped even during the explanations of what we were about to eat. Very rude and shouldnโ€™t have been tolerated. I just canโ€™t imagine this is comparable to their other locations. I donโ€™t know, I really feel like the ambiance is the worst part. Had they put more effort into it, I think the rest would make sense. We have been to multiple other omakase experiences in Seattle that were better.

Amazing omakase dinner!

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Bites and Sights Adventures on 06/21/2023

I cannot say enough great things about Sushi by Scratch! The atmosphere, service, and food was impeccable! When we reached the restaurant you have to knock on the door to be let in. As soon as we entered we were sat at a bar and offered a complimentary drink, non-alcoholic options were available as well. As we waited for the other diners we were given a drinks menu to look over. When everyone had arrived, they have 3 seating times per night and only 10 people per seating. I chose to do the wine pairing with my meal and my wife did the house pairing that consisted of sake, wine, and beer. This is an omakase dinner, you do not order food, it's handed to you and you try it! Every bite and sip we had was amazing! The drinks paired perfectly with the 10 bites from the menu. Before dessert was served we were offered two more bites for a slight upcharge. We had booked through our Chase travel card so the bites and drinks were included in our price. Again, I would highly recommend Sushi by Scratch if you love an omakase dinner.

Out the door for two people was expensive as hell.

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Korah L. on 03/20/2023

Assuming you add drinks with your food, you should absolutely expect to spend around $300 per person. If I could rate the price point on this I'd say it was 4 stars, as it was more pageantry than it was quantity. Which we did expect going in for the most part, so it wasn't a surprise. The service was kind, thorough and entertaining for sure. You could tell they all had a nice working dynamic amongst each other. I loved how intimate the entire experience was. It was darker and chill and totally pleasant for our anniversary. It would be a great spot for a special occasion for sure. I put us on the waitlist for a few different dates which ended up working out really well. They set out a few cancellations which was a relief to know that it wasn't as impossible to get into as I had anticipated. The food was incredible. Everything melted in your mouth. And the cucumber salad they graciously filled up for me twice as I couldn't stop eating it in between bites. Toro is my go-to at every establishment as I'm always trying to find the best prepared in Seattle, and this one definitely made it to the top of the list. I love the combinations of different flavours. The drink pairings would have gone really nicely with our bites but we decided on a few cocktails instead. Which were also very nicely done. Overall, I'd say it is worth the visit! Just be prepared to lay down some solid cash, and be sure to go into it with an open mind andyou'll have a great time.

I had a fantastic experience at Sushi by Scratch and would give it a glowing 5-star review. This restaurant truly offers a unique dining experience that cannot be found anywhere else, which I'd summarize as "a create twist to a 17-course omakase served in an intimate speakeasy"The attention to detail and level of service at Sushi by Scratch is truly impressive. Guests are advised to arrive 15 minutes early, which I highly recommend as it allows you to unwind and relax in the waiting room while enjoying a complimentary cocktail. Once you enter the main dining room, you are greeted by 3 chefs and a bartender who guide you through the 17 bites of the evening. The menu for the evening is displayed on a chalkboard behind the bar, which adds to the speakeasy ambiance of the restaurant. The sushi chefs were knowledgeable and attentive, explaining each bite and answering any questions we had. The non-traditional takes on classic nigiri were an absolute delight, and I found myself enjoying each and every bite -- especially the otoro!Other really memorable courses of the evening were the unagi with bone marrow dripping, the hamachi with sweet corn, and the shima aji with a spicy kick. The quality of the ingredients was top-notch, and it was clear that the chefs had carefully selected each piece of fish and garnish to create a unique and memorable experience for their guests.

Really enjoyed the complimentary cocktail and decor in the bar area. Sushi chefs did an amazing job going over the details of every piece and all the intricate ingredients. Especially liked all the options of drink pairings. We chose the one that included sake, cocktail and even a lager. The bone marrow nigiri was very unique and especially enjoyed it when they torched the remaining onto the unagi. Great for a special occasion!

Some of the BEST sushi I've ever had in my entire life, and

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Colleen K. on 02/26/2023

Some of the BEST sushi I've ever had in my entire life, and an incredibly unique experience, but I have some tips....First - make sure you arrive early!! We were running a little late from traffic and almost didn't get in which was pretty disappointing. There is a super tiny plaque on the wall next to a Ring doorbell, but no address number or obvious signage. We rang the doorbell for about 5 minutes and nobody answered... then had to bang on the glass quite a few times and was finally let in, only to have missed the entire welcome cocktail experience and get seated quickly with everyone else on time. They never brought us our welcome cocktails after that :/ Second - if you get the drink flight pairings, just know that it is a lotttt of alcohol. Everyone in our group left pretty tipsy since the amount of drinks you get with the pairing, compared to the amount of food (1 bite per course x17) is quite a lot. We thought it was worth it in the end to try all the drink pairings though, but it did rack up the bill significantly. Third - be sure to chat with the chefs and other people!! Being in a small intimate setting with only 3 chefs, 1 bartender, and 10 total guests, you get a unique experience to meet new people which we really enjoyed! Many of the guests (including us) were a little shy at first but when we all started chatting we became friends by the end of the night and had a ton of fun! Lastly - be prepared that with only 2 people, plus both of us ordering the drink flights and automatic gratuity, we spent almost $700 that night. Was it worth it? Yes I think so! The food was incredible, fun unique experience, got to meet some new people, and try things we've never done/had before. Probably won't be back for a while though since it was quite pricey, but would LOVE to go again!!

3.5, prefacing with some context that I grew up in Japan, Japanese decent and a traditionalist.Service: 5 stars, amazing staff Ambience: 3 stars, walls are pitch black with lanterns, very modern/no character, I found it strange for omokaseFood: 4 stars, and barely at at that. Quality of fish was great but 4/16 courses were farm raised protein, the nigiri was layered with dribbles of sauces, garnishes, garlic, green onions...you name it. They served wagyu beef sushi and bone marrow sushi - I came for fish, so I found it odd. Random: 2 stars, after an omokase experience you have the option to order more and is typically based of what was presented. Here, you cannot choose and the extra you want is "chefs choice," what's the point? Again, I am a traditionalist. We asked what sake's came with the tasting menu and rather than the server telling us he gave some foofoo answer about it being a surprise as anticipation ruins the experience - huh? I want to know what I'm ordering. Omokase means chef choice but the experience is more about the unique culture of the local food and personalities of the sushi chefs/family that owns the restaurant. For $200 a pop I left hungry and wasn't satisfied. Wouldn't recommend it to be honest. Omokase has become a trendy buzz word. I think Takai in Bellevue is much much better.

3/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @S S. on 02/18/2023

Food was great, imo, because it had a lot of taste (ie more salt) than takai in downtown Bellevue (which is another omakase place). Ambience is also nice if you like a dim lit area. Service is basically one chef to two couples each (3 chef total) and 10 guests in the whole restaurant - around a bar area. So you would feel like it's very intimate and attentive service. Now, breakdown of cost 680 dollars meals for 2 people. 165/person to start, then 115/one wine flight, then two extra bites at the end (optional) totaling 70 for both. Then a mandatory 100 service fee (20%). So the price seemed to be not justified for the food and comfort. Here are my rant: 1) the place is not easy to find - like some others said and thank god someone posted the door sign on Yelp, 2) the supposed before dinner experience was a small glass of some mixed drink around a bar - what's sooo great about it? Beats me! 3) the refill of the pickled cucumber was filled for other couples but not my partner but I think I can let it go because we were in the middle and that chef was busy assembling and introducing the food. However for the 100 dollars fee for the chef himself to attend to two guests I don't think I am over asking here if others got their pickles refilled. 4) sorry but I am not into the bar counter experience bc for 500+ dollars I want my own table because I want to discuss the food quality without offending the chef or talk about anything without being overheard and 5) this is the kicker the seats cut into our legs and pretty much cut off your circulation because it was hard and curve up. Has no one tested these chairs and why hasn't anyone review about this? For gods sake i am sure they can get better chairs when charging 550+dinner/ a couple. All in all food was good but this whole experience was not worth the 680. So I won't be back and I am also hesitant to recommend. But if they could put in actual tables (vs just the chef counter) and change the seats then I would recommend it.

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Giulian G. on 02/15/2023

If you're a fan of omakase sushi, you really have to try this place. Sushi by Scratch lived up to its reputation when we attended the experience on a Thursday night in February. From the welcome cocktail in the first room to the fun conversations with the chefs at dinner, this was a meal to remember. We loved the fact that they encouraged guests to show up early and had an entire experience planned for the guests until it was time to enter the dining room (and pro-tip, they'll give you refills on your drink if you run out). When we entered the main dining room, we were greeted by the three chefs and bartender, and we were off to the races with impeccable service and delicious food. You can study the menu on the wall to see what's coming next, enjoy your sake or cocktails, or watch the chefs prepare your next bite as you move through 17 one bite courses. They seem small, but neither of us wanted anything more when we left. The omakase is planned out in a way that moves from lighter to richer and more complex bites, and we loved every one of them. We had a great conversation with the chef across from us, who moved to Seattle to help open this location of Sushi by Scratch, and felt warmly welcomed throughout the experience. My only wish is that they would charge full price ahead of time on Tock like many other high-end restaurants are doing these days, so that we could avoid the pileup on departure as five couples paid their bill one at a time. Can't say we'll be back super soon, but we'll keep this one in mind for another special occasion down the road!

Sushi by Scratch is definitely a cool experience and I'd

4/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Gen V. on 02/10/2023

Sushi by Scratch is definitely a cool experience and I'd rate my visit as a 4/4.5 stars. I heard about them from a best new Seattle restaurant article and from a foodie friend who wanted to go, too. I was able to get a coveted reservation by signing up for their online waitlist, hoping for open spots, and luckily jumping on a same day reservation asap per an email. Located on 6th Ave in downtown, finding street parking on a Thurs evening wasn't too bad. Just beware - the entrance (a discreet black door with a small sign) was initially challenging to find so definitely factor in enough time to walk up and down the same street looking for it. I recommend arriving at least 20 mins early to enjoy your complimentary drink (ours was a yummy yuzu alcoholic concoction). The staff was also friendly and the fun camaraderie within the kitchen was very evident. The 16 pre-fix pieces of sushi (with a bonus surprise matcha bonbon dessert at the end) was delicious and unexpectedly filling. If you love sushi, this well-paced, enjoyable omakase experience might be just for you. The seafood and meat were high quality and fresh. My top 3 faves were the tuna belly, freshwater eel, and sea urchin. To be honest, all the sushi pieces were tasty and I'd have been more than happy to have seconds of any piece. Is it expensive like everyone says in their reviews? At a couple hundred bucks (about $220) per person for the omakase alone (with tax and a defaulted 20 % gratuity factored in), it is a bit pricey. However, I felt the overall omakase experience was worth it to at least try once.

Their definition and understanding of ใŠไปปใ› ( omakase) is so questionable.

1/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Keon W on 10/11/2022

We were here for the 9:30 pm seating on Oct 6th. This restaurant is a franchise from a California Michelin Star sushi bar, so we thought to give it a try. Unfortunately, other than carrying the fame of Michelin, this new restaurant in Seattle is nothing. Service and Employee Attitude: It was not easy to find this restaurant. We followed the address and walked around the block trying to locate the restaurant, as there was no visible sign outside for us to tell where the entrance was. Until we found a gentleman dressed like a sushi chef walking into this dark door with no street number and clear signage (photo uploaded and hopefully it will show) I then opened the door and stepped in, there was a person standing behind a bar and another one sitting at the bar. As the person at the bar stood up to greet me, I told him how hard it was for us to find this place. This guy just attacked back saying there is a sign and showed me the small badge-size sign beside the door (also shown in the photo). Then he went on bragging about how this setting made them private and exclusive. I then said, โ€œmaybe having more instruction in your confirmation email would helpโ€. He threw back that โ€œWe had our address sent in the confirmationโ€. EXCUSE ME? How is sending an address good when the street number is missing? At this point, my excitement about trying this new restaurant was already nowhere to find. We could have walked away at this point. However, we had a deposit held by them and they would charge almost a full-price cancellation, so we had to suck it up. My bad feeling about the night was just about to be proved right. Food: The whole tasting menu was fulfilled with mostly very basic ingredients that you could easily find in any โ€œnon-omakaseโ€ sushi restaurant. (Hamachi, Toro, Scallop, Shima Ahi, Madai, Spot Prawn, Salmon, Escolar?! and so on, full menu showing in the photo uploaded) They are not traditional Edomae sushi types of Omakase. Multiple items were seasoned with sugar that did not supplement the taste of fresh ingredients. About half or more of the items were Aburi! Torching some fresh ingredients surely gives it a unique taste, but it does not work on everything. The spot prawn torched tonight just became gooey and even a bit bitter, also with a burnt prawn shell stink. Surprise kept coming! We had multiple fish scales found in our sushi! Can you believe it? I have never had the issue in any other sushi restaurant! (Photos uploaded) Other than these highlights above, other items were just mediocre plain taste. Although, I liked the geoduck and unagi which tasted pretty good. Finale: When we were leaving the tasting room, we were presented with a bill automatically including a 20% service charge, which was standard practice for Omakase service. However, with the service and attitude we received and the food quality, I did not feel like being imposed by the 20% service charge and they did remove it for us. Conclusion: It does not necessarily make you an Omakase sushi restaurant when you just overprice the sushi ($165 per person with no drinks or a la carte), have small seatings and serve sushi piece by piece. Omakase is based on the pride of the sushi chef and the high-level trust customers give to the chef. Our experience with Sushi by Scratch Seattle just proved that they failed to meet any of the standards of Omakase. It was a complete disappointment from start to end. Although they waived our service fee, we felt the need to let people who might be interested in this restaurant know that, they should avoid this one at all costs.

It is easy to miss the door to Sushi by Scratch. You ring a bell and you are invited into a dark space with a bar and a welcome drink. Once all parties are there (10 people max), the group is seated for a 17 course omakase dinner. The fish quality is superb and the combination of flavors is amazing. Every bit was delicious and, frankly, I wish I could do two round of the dinner experience. The team is friendly, funny, and very attentive. The drink selection is bar raising. Overall an excellent evening worth a repeat. Note: This is one of the rare times where I did not dare to pull out my phone for pics. I somehow felt this would distract from the whole experience and I am glad I did not do it.
