My experience dining at Matsumoto in Kyoto was a mix of highs and lows. I had high hopes for this Omakase meal, considering the excellent reputation of Japanese cuisine. The appetizer sashimi was a delight, both delicious and beautifully presented, setting the bar high. However, my excitement began to wane when I reached the sushi portion of the meal. While the sushi was undeniably fresh and tasty, it didn't live up to my expectations of something extraordinary, especially considering the Michelin star reputation. What disappointed me the most was that the sushi felt rather ordinary and lacked the creativity and innovation I had anticipated. The portion sizes were also surprisingly small, which was unexpected given the price tag of close to $150 per person in Japan. In contrast to the incredible value I found in Japan for fresh sushi, the experience at Matsumoto in Kyoto didn't quite justify the cost.
