Fantastic
Faultless from start to finish! The Halibut in particular was outstanding. Staff were charming and knowledgeable.

Lovely food and very friendly service! My wife loved the venison and my beef was outstanding! What great addition to the area

This was a quick supper visit at 6pm so we were not entirely surprised to be the only diners. Expectations were high given the abundence of great reviews, early michelin rating and ownership history. Based on this we were mildly dissapointed but clearly a good potential restaurant with promise . Here are the facts. Attractive ambiance and delightful welcoming staff. Never helpful on arrival for a stale fat smell from the kitchen or the need to improve ventilation. The signature dish of wild rabbit lassagne was not as good as expected and perhaps the hype did not help. More like ravioli than lassagne and perhaps simply rabbit pasta. The sauce was a little thin and the wild rabbit very tasty and excellent. I enjoyed it if underwhelmed. Underseasoned in my view. The roasted hake was excellent but let down with a very salty sauce. The calves liver dissapointed and was chewy in parts. The entire dish being too salty. We left unimpressed on this visit but convinced of the potential. Looking forward to our next visit. Service was excellent and warm.

Spot of lunch before heading to Rugby. Lovely pint of Rebellion IPA in the cosy bar followed by the best starter I have ever had (Rabbit Lasagne) and the most delicious Venison Service was 10/10 - Friendly and always there for us

Fabulous experience. They accepted my late booking; thank you ! Wonderful meal with family with cosy surroundings. A great treat the food is out of this world. Can’t rate highly enough top praise for the hosts and of course the amazing talented chef.

First time here - great service all the way through… food was amazing and definitely won’t be last time. A wet Saturday with great food and Sinatra playing! Thank you x

Had simple food here, done to perfection. A real treat. Calf's liver was succulent--best liver I've had in my life, including every bit I've cooked myself. That's the difference between a skilled chef and the rest of us. A pond of mash so creamy I thought at first that it was cream. Fine green beans like twigs. Some sort of onion dollop. Plus a fresh-baked roll. As meals go, I call that Zen. Burchetts Zen. Eton Mess to follow. Little globes of meringue. Sliced strawberries. Cream. Ice cream. Some bits of green stuff. Awesome. Washed down with Marlow Brewery Rebellion lager, my favourite British lager. Cosy restaurant in an old inn. Pine floor, plain, well-made pine tables. Next to a tiny bar with 4 leather armchairs. Lady in charge, from Latvia, was kindly and on the ball. What a place.

This was a great place to eat, a 40 min cab ride was never an issue and neither was the bill, it’s all about the food and wine after all. I have recommended this place to friends who also enjoyed it. We had a table booked for 8pm this evening and it was probably the worst food I’ve ever had, I tried the crab starter.. it sounded risky because it involves garlic and mint.. it was horrendous, garlic and mint with crab?? It was obviously a gamble, the £40 rib eye steak was so chewy and half of it was pure fat, the sauce was so salty and heavy that it ruined it anyway, the triple cooked fries are not as they sound, no taste at all and too crispy, basically it’s like eating crispy cardboard. My wife also had a similar experience with her main course, the venison was ok but the mashed potato was far too salty as was the heavy sauce. The staff were so nice that we lied and smiled and said everything was ok just so we all left on a good note. Since this place has changed hands the food is horrendous but the prices are still premium. £275 for a bad experience, bad steak, bad chips, bad sauce, bad mash, even the wine is supermarket grade at a top premium price. Never again, it was a regular place for us but we will never go back there again.
Be the first to ReplyLovely midweek treat
Pub and restaurant under new management, warm welcome, great service and excellent food. A really good selection on the menu.

Underwhelmed by the food, expensive for what was served. Very patchy service. Won’t last unless improvements are made, which would be a shame.

Visited here mid-week with friends after finding out the new owners are the same as The Beehive in White Waltham which we have visited on numerous occasions before. Good value 3 courses for £55, executed very well and very tasty. Had a few bottles of wine too which made a very enjoyable evening. Definitely worth checking out if you like a good gastro-pub.

Visited with my wife, taking advantage of some rare time without our children. We walked in through the rear entrance from the car park and came in to the small bar. We walked past the bartender in the corridor and he was friendly and greeted us. When we came into the bar the same bartender welcomed us and asked how he could help, he directed us through to the restaurant area. When we came to the restaurant area we were very enthusiastically greeted by the waitress. After some discussion we found the lady was very new to the job, so didn’t know everything but was generally very knowledgable considering, and was very polite and friendly. She took our drinks order, and left us to peruse the menu. An acceptable amount of time passed after receiving our drinks, and we were asked if we wanted to order food which we did (rabbit and bacon terrine, ribeye steak, and dark chocolate tart) a different waitress (possibly owner) took our order and recommended well on the steak. A short time later some homemade rolls were brought out to us which were lovely, with lovely real butter. Soon after our plates were cleared, the terrine came out and it was exceptional. Paired with a lovely (presumably home made) slice of toasted bread, some tiny pickles, and jam. All were very nice and perfectly presented. Next course was the ribeye steak, with Dorset snails, chive butter, and chips. The steak was medium rare, at the staff recommendation, I would normally go for rare but was swayed to medium rare. The steak was very nice, but toward the edges it was a little too medium for my liking. But this is just personal preference as it was very tasty. The snails were excellent, and the chips were perfectly cooked. It was topped off with an excellent chive and butter sauce which complimented everything beautifully. Desert soon followed and I am not one who usually goes in for sweets, but I’m very glad I did. A perfectly presented chocolate tart with fantastic vanilla ice cream, topped with peanut brittle(?) All was absolutely delicious, and an excellent end to our meal. Our plates were cleared and the bill brought to us at request in a very acceptable amount of time. All in all a fantastic meal, with excellent service to boot. Usually with some of these restaurants you tend to find that waiters/esses can be overly attentive to the point it is irksome. The crown has a lovely relaxed atmosphere, it’s small but not cramped, and we were given a lovely window table. The lady who served us for the most part, was the perfect balance between attentive but not hovering. The rebellion local lager was nice and the food was very well priced for the quality. Thankyou to the team at The Crown, apologies I did not get any names
Be the first to ReplyJust opened, tasty food with lovely table setting
We had dinner here the second night after reopening. Lovely comfortable chairs, good flat ware and silver ware which were all good quality. The menu is a set price and for 3 courses was £55 per head, supplements for some dishes of £7-£10 A limited menu but enough choice, beef, liver and 2 fish dishes were the mains. Portion sizes were a little on the small side but everything was extremely tasty and well presented. We chose some fairly pricey wine and enjoyed our dinner out. A few early hiccups which I’m sure will be sorted out very soon, a sister establishment is The Beehive. Will not be serving Sunday lunches as the restaurant is apparently too small (25ish covers) to get a turnover, sadly I think this is a mistake. Very small bar area, which seats about 6 people but plenty of outside garden space with tables for the better weather. I believe a few “light bites” may be available for lunch if a full menu is too much.
Be the first to ReplyRude and unwelcoming
Second time we’ve given this place a try. First time wasn’t serving food in the bar because too busy. Second time completely empty, but was a point blank “we couldn’t be f****d” no!
The Scottish guy was so rude and made us feel completely unwelcome.
Just wonderful
What a lovely experience. First class food obviously created with love, welcoming and professional staff and excellent service. Limited food and wine menu, but everything is top quality, so that doesn’t matter. I chose venison pie, best pie ever. Haven’t stopped thinking about it!
A hidden treasure, waiting to welcome you.
Good but not memorable
Disappointed is how I would sum up my experience. The food was all well cooked but unremarkable. A piece of shell in a crab starter, a main meal of beef that was a little underseasoned and very short on sauce it desperately needed to pull the dish together. Vegetables lacking flavour from being re heated. A chocolate fondant that was over sweet and not accompanied by any textural variations.
So overall a good meal but not worth a long drive.
Grim, cynical and joyless
Cynical and loathsome. Some good cooking is not enough to save this smug, overly satisfied cathedral to joylessness.
A ridiculously short menu, with prices far, far higher than on the website menu; and a wine list with comically high prices for supermarket level wines. For example the very same Prosecco from Morrisons is £40 and not £8. A very basic Champagne is sold for £80 when it’s available on Amazon for £20. Foolishly we took a Viognier for £50 that turns out to be a single figure wine. There are many good merchants out there, perhaps they should give one a call
Portion sizes range from microscopic to unpleasantly large, without any indication of which is which in advance. There is a proficiency and skill in the kitchen, but not nearly sufficient to compensate for the smug service and funereal atmosphere. It’s more Edward & Tubbs than a friendly, hospitable establishment
It’s impossible to believe that it has always been this way, so one only wonders what went wrong?
Beautiful food and excellent service.
We have just left after an amazing dinner and I couldn't wait to leave a review. The staff were all very friendly, attentive without being overly so and new the menu very well. The quality of the food and drinks was stupendous and we never felt rushed. Fully deserves it's Michelin Star and will definitely be coming back again.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and friendly staff.
We went for an early dinner, the staff were very friendly . The food was amazing I had the crab to start and my husband had the wood pigeon pate, both were really good. We both had the duck special , lovely . Often it is the vegetables that let a place down , these were cooked to perfection. I had the chocolate dessert which was to die for. We will visit again.
Be the first to ReplyAvoid, disappointing food and condescending staff
Incredibly disappointing meal. Husbands Pate was OK and venison pie good. The real let down was my lamb main (£40), it wasnt great, quite chewy and incredibly fatty which we did feedback to the staff. I think how staff handle these things can really make or break your experience, the staff were condescending so we paid and left. I expected better, we wont be returning.
We regularly enjoy fine dining and there are much better local restaurants in terms of the food, staff and the way they treat guests.... the Hinds Head in Bray, Roux at Skindles, Hand & Flowers in Marlow are all 10 times better!
Delicious and tasty food. Lovely service.
We had a very warm and friendly greeting from the chef patron as we arrived and did not find any of the concerns that other reviews have referred to.
The food is a highlight. A menu with approx 5 choices for each course including a daily special dish.
Flavours, presentation and service a highlight. The main dining area is a little dark and the ceiling is low.
Expensive but enjoyable.
Welcome Back
A delightful evening spent in a lovely atmosphere with friendly efficient staff, great food and a delightful reasonably priced bottle of red wine. My wood pigeon pate was lovely and the turbot that followed was delicious and then the syrup sponge was a joy. My guest had never been to the Crown before loved it and raved about the Venison Pie!
Be the first to ReplyUnspoilt Christmas Ritual, Thursday 17th December 2020
We managed to fit in what has become "the ritual Christmas visit" to our favourite UK dining Pub despite the lockdowns.
To say it was a remarkable all round experience does not do this magical pub justice, the service from start to finish despite face masks etc was warm, kind with much anticipated in ways of water, drinks, wine and warm crusty bread!
The social distancing measures in place was generous and we noticed tables missing, the whole of the Crown is immaculate and must cost to keep it that way?
The Chef-Landlord is a "Croydon Boy" and his family a delight!
Pumpkin custard was superb to start intense not sweet, made savoury by crispy Onions. Crab, fresh, generous and exciting with crunchy Cashews and Apples. Turbot with Huge Prawns and pan juices exceptional, Treacle Sponge with perfect Vanilla Ice Cream, a school boys-girls delight!
Coffee, Macaroons made perfectly with Armagnac all with a fairly decent bottle of Riesling £75...
We hope the Crown re-opens in what are horrific times for Pubs because as I said in my opinion its the best in its class.
