From the moment we walked in the door, the waitress (and manager, we later found out) was very grumpy! We were two people and we were sat a large table for six. That was fine except that immediately after we had ordered our food, the waitress tried to seat a group of three people at the same table as us, even though the entire place was empty! We were there on a week night and the pub did not fill up. Luckily that group also thought that this was very strange and asked to be seated somewhere else! The menu looked nice and we were very hungry. We were celebrating, happy to be out for a meal and we decided to give the wait staff the benefit of the doubt; maybe they'd had a difficult day. We really tried, we were friendly and polite, it did not help at all. First, my partner was told that the warmed camembert starter would take "at least 20 min." When he looked at the waitress surprised, she said very sarcastically, "Well it has to be cooked, you know." He picked something else. The rice in my starter was raw and so crunchy, it was impossible to eat, I ate around it. We didn't complain, but things went from bad to worse anyway! The mains were good, but when the waitress served them, the plates were dropped loudly on to the table. We were unable to get anyone's attention to order more wine during our meal, and gave up. The waitress' behaviour was very strange and no better than the manager's. When we tried to order desert, I asked the waitress what Frangipane was. When she looked at me as if I had asked her something crazy, I politely explained that I don't speak French. She clearly didn't know and instead of admitting it, she slowly put her hands up, shrugged her shoulders and said, "Why don't you Google it?" and walked away. We wondered if she was new to The Drapers Arms or maybe to waitressing, but the manager was no better. Instead of telling me that Frangipane is like a bakewell tart, she angrily approached our table, said nothing and showed me pictures from a google search on her phone!! It was all very, very odd. We decided not to have desert. Then to add insult to injury, we were overcharged by £49. Seemingly other tables meals had been added to our bill. The manager did apologise about this. If it hadn't for the 12.5% service charge, we definitely would not have left a tip. We live locally and all of our family have enjoyed many a fantastic meal in The Drapers Arms over the years. The place has obviously changed hands, which is a real shame. The new wait staff are awful!!
