I like these
Okay, not to everyone's taste but I think its great that Bruges celebrates sculpture in this way. So, do go and check these out.

Worth passing through and taking a look if you are in Bruges. Interesting to see. Having seen a couple of pictures I was expecting them to be larger! A pleasant park setting.

My wife and I just crossed over the most photographed St Boniface Bridge in Bruges and came across these four statues of Revolution, War, Hunger and Death. These gentlemen are not people you want to meet. Yet, it is difficult to escape this fascinating group of bronze statues by Belgian draughtsman and expressionist sculptor Rik Poot. As a symbol of the doom of man and the end of time, and as a whole, they represent the four earthly horrors. You can recognise them by the object the horsemen are carrying: a bow (Revolution), a sword (War), a weighing scale (Hunger) and lastly, the emaciated visage of the fourth horseman speaks for itself. You are staring straight into Death's empty eyes. This grouping is well worth viewing and reflecting on.

After walking across the most photographed bridge in Bruges, the four horsemen are in front of you. Well worth spending a few minutes to admire.

You might well come across these modern sculptures when walking near the Groeningemuseum, but you donโt have to go out of your way looking for them. I thought they were a rather ugly example of modern art, in a city famous for fabulous classic art.

Elegant part of our walking experience in Bruges. Be sure to include this on your walk in the area. Always interesting to see contemporary interpretations of classic concepts.
Be the first to ReplySerious of four haunting yet beautiful sculptures at Arentshof
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalyse by Belgian sculptor Rik Pook are situated in the centre of Arentshof (garden) between Arentshuis and Groeningemuseum. What you will see here is a series of four sculptures representing Conquest, Fire, Death and Famine. These are contemporary figures of horsemen crafted in vague, vacant and dark shape and form. They are haunting and beautiful at the same time, something fans of sculpture and art will appreciate having a look at while passing through the area while sightseeing in Bruges.

After exiting the Groeningemuseum, on our way we reached a small park - we later understood that it is called the Arentshuis Garden. Here is an interesting statuary group. Luckily there was a label there, and that's how I found out it was the work of Flemish plastic artist Rik Poot. The statuary group is called the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. There are four statues, not very large, made in an interesting manner that inserts empty spaces between the metal elements that form the horse and the rider. Looking at them for a while, it seems as you get a feeling of discomfort, of restlessness.

I disagree that modern art has no place in this historic city. It is crazy to discount these four statuettes on those grounds: do go and check them out

Created by Belgian sculptor Rik Poot, the modern sculpture Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse depicts Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death. They are tucked away in a courtyard behind the Groeningemuseum and provide a stark contrast to the older statues located in the city. Worth a look if youโre passing. The courtyard is also a pleasant place to have a seat.

Interesting set of statues of the four horsemen of the apocalypse in a beautiful little square. With the added bonus of actual horses trotting past every so often.
Be the first to ReplyUgly
In the total contrast to all the splendour in this magnificant city, these sculptures are simply ugly and too modernistic for the setting in which they are located.

These sculptures are very weird and quite spooky. Definitely worth spending a few minutes finding them and taking in their space. Great work
