Thank you!
This was just the loveliest freakin' experience. I brought my wife here for a (belated, because it takes awhile to get a reservation!🤣) birthday dinner, just the other night. I've rarely experienced such a warm, welcoming and pleasant atmosphere. It really was just like a dinner party. Every single person in this place seemed to be having a blast. The food was wonderful, of course (when I die, let it be by drowning in a pool of white truffle sabayon). What really made the difference though? The complete lack of pretension or stuffiness. This place is run and operated by a group of folks who clearly love the heck out of what they do. You can tell they're like a family. I simply had a wonderful time. That's it! I would happily go back and cannot wait for the opportunity. I am a father of two. I do not get nights out. I do not have a life. Not really. I am very thankful for the staff at the Kitchen for giving us another lovely memory and another dining experience to look forward to repeating. Thank you!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing and unreliable service, night ruined!
We used to LOVE The Kitchen as our go-to for special occasions, but after last night's disappointing service, we won't be returning ever again. We ordered seconds of 3 dishes, followed up asking for the status, and at the end of the evening was told the kitchen was closed, so they can no longer prepare the dishes we requested. They blamed it on new staff they're training, but that's not an acceptable excuse for a Michelin star restaurant! If I wanted unreliability and poor service, I would've had dinner at a fast food restaurant instead. They also changed policies and no longer allow you to take your leftover bread or chips home. Does it end up in the trash? Feels like a huge waste. If you hire new staff, please train them appropriately, or find new staff that can deliver a basic level of service in a restaurant such as submitting orders. The whole night was ruined by this experience and our 10 year anniversary is now a giant disappointment.

Amazing experience. Very engaging chef and staff. Love the ideas that you can walk around interacting with the chefs and the repeat of what we like. So much food and all so good, 3 of us had one repeat and it was so great. The cocktail pairing was interesting, something to try at least once. I had the mock tail pairing and it was fun. A lot of wines and liquor that you don't see in other places. It's not your typical quiet and reserved atmosphere, it is fun, energetic ambiance. You can cook next to the chefs and help prepare the food if you want to see how that feels. You need to book 4 months ahead and have some flexibility with your dates because the reservation is gone within minutes. Definitely recommend and will go again, next time will try to get the experience preparing the food.
Be the first to ReplyVery good; could be a little better
The place as a nice, casual vibe and the food is quite good. We had a salad, salmon and gumbo. Only criticism: while the gumbo was big (better be big for a gumbo that costs more than $20), the contents were disappointing. About 85% of it was chicken, only 15% shrimp and andouille sausage.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful presentation lacks substance and taste.
The presentation is outstanding, the food looks incredible unfortunately it lacks taste. My second time there and last. The best item wasn't on the menu, the amuse bouche. It was a mushroom soup and fantastic. Also delicious, the Dungeness crab crepe. The Cauliflower starter was disappointed as was the diakon radish dish. Both looked incredible but didn't taste so. The pasta dish with truffle was twofold. The pasta was delicious BUT the copious amount of truffle the chef grated onto each plate not only looked disgusting but tasted disgusting. I have been to Italy, we love truffle. My husband is a chef. We weren't sure what grade of truffle we were eating but not on par with the French Laundry. The main dish, a beef roll of sorts was tough and chewy. The desert, a cherry cheesecake another disappointment. I will give them the chocolate chip cookies and tiny cappuccino cream puff, both delicious. The wine list is outrageously expensive and the choices lacking. I suggest you pay the corkage and bring your own wine. Spending $500 on a dinner for two that looked pretty and listening to an arrogant loud, screaming chef all night....not worth the money in my opinion.

After various persistent attempts to get a reservation, we finally got in and were very excited. It is a very special and unique place not only at the surrounding area but in general. Concept is new, vibrant and entertaining. Food was good, vine selection is pretty impressive and advise in vina choosing was accurate and to the point. Noone would leave hungry or bored. Social part of it is definitely playing the big role. Staff is great overall.
Be the first to ReplyWOW ! ! Dinner and a Show !
I went to The Kitchen Restaurant with high expectations hoping to place it up with The French Laundry. Chef Kelly and his crew really came through. In addition to a great combination of outstanding courses Chef Kelly is quite the comedian and kept us entertained throughout the 4 1/2 hour experience. The whole restaurant and kitchen were open for us to explore. Almost all courses were prepared or plated in full view and that was a show in itself. I tried the wine paring and found it a little sparse for the price. In addition to everything else they made every dish edible for my wife who does not tolerate spicy. It was a great evening!

We’ve always enjoyed The Kitchen, and they may recover from their botched re-opening, but the problems are many. It turns out that touring the kitchen area to watch prep was a big part of the “experience” and so they needed to step it up on the culinary side to make up for it. They didn’t. In fact, after the lightly fried oyster (which was exceptional), everything went downhill. The worst of the fare was a small jelly jar filled with asparagus-flavored library paste. The exuberant atmosphere was replaced by a grim undercurrent of desperation, as if they needed to financially recover in one night for the past year. The bill for two of us was $750 which, of course, is too much for any meal, anywhere.

We finally made it to the Kitchen for dinner. In many ways it was more than expected but in some ways I expected more. My first course was fish and it was so dry. I didnt want to complain as I just wanted to experience it as it came not with any extra effort on their part. And everything else was perfect. You can choose to have a wine pairing with your meal which I feel is way over priced considering how much you get in each pouring and considering how much you are already paying for the meal. These were not $100 + dollar bottles of wine. The experience was entertaining and we will probably try another menu for a special occasion because they literally will give you whatever you want to eat and there was much to choose from. Just plan on spending a car payment for dinner. And gaining 5 lbs..

A most entertaining night with excellent food. A guarantee you won't go home hungry. This is a fixe menu but will apparently support dietary challenges as the staff while sitting at the counter went around to every person asking them of any dietary restrictions. Before I go on, reservations were tough to get. We got lucky and someone had apparently cancelled. They open the doors at 1700h and no sooner. I must also admit when we first arrived, I looked at the area/parking lot and the restaurant is next to a laundromat and in the Arden Fair area versus not being in the high rent distract which I felt it really brought home fact that successful restaurant can and probably should be accessible in all parts of Sacramento. So do not plan on arriving early to hang out at the bar. You are seated efficiently and in a very professional manner by friendly staff. Of note, all of the seats were bar seat types and I think this is to enable even the guests seated at tables to be able to see the chef and his team prepare/cook certain dishes. It is the open kitchen type venue. Now the behind the scene preparation area as well as the washing/cleaning up area is also open as we wandered back there pre meal and during the intermission period. I can guarantee you that the area top to bottom was spotless! Even though there is a fixe menu one can add beverages (wine pairings for an additional fee) or purchase wine by the glass. FYI - Champagne and a glass of wine is basically 10 bucks cheaper than the small wining pairing. They change the menu weekly to let you know. Started with two courses and then a mini-break of more tidbits served in the kitchen area. Oh yes, prior to starting they also had a few morsels to try. Yummy. Pace yourself! Don't stuff yourself with the hor d'oeuvres even though they are really tasty. Then there are two main course which ours was quail and beef. Fantastic. Then of course dessert. Throughout the evening the chef provides much entertainment and education describing how each course is prepared and a little background why it was chosen. For example he created a Dungeness crab delight and a ravioli with truffles because of the crab season and the several types of truffles are beginning and ending their respective seasons. Thus several types of truffles were used. Crab however because of the delay in the SF Bay harvest was flown in from another part of the states. The desserts was killer. If you were a diabetic, this would require one to take additional insulin. If you had high cholesterol, you may be more cholesterol lowering drugs. All kidding aside, the food was rich and tasty. The second dessert threw me over the "full" stage. We ended up boxing the dessert for home. Now the Chef kept offering anyone to just speak up if you wanted anything additional. I don't think anyone asked for seconds. He claimed that we were being served over 5,000 calories that evening. I must admit that I did elect to go to the gym the next morning. Everyone pretty much was celebrating some event such as an anniversary, new job, birthday etc. Chef made sure he recognized and highlighted some interesting fact about the person/persons going around the room. Vast majority of people in our group were first timers but there were some annual attenders. To our surprise we found about that the restaurant received it first Michelin start is summer. I asked him about the process and he explain how it happens and why the Sacramento area never had one nor the opportunity to be rated. There were several other quality restaurants being awarded the plate status but only one restaurant in the Sacramento area was awarded the Michelin Star. Price - Be prepared to break out your credit card. Although the fixe meal price was $135 per person, the cost of the wine, the 22% gratuity and the sales tax. Now for the gratuity, well worth the amount in that the staff were attentive, not overbearing and available to answer any question to me every need/desire of the guest. The noise level was not an issue as we chatted with our neighbors as people are seated at the counter and at tables. A few were definitely a group but others especially at the counter was random. I would definitely request a seat at the counter to get a view of what the staff were cooking/preparing. Bottom Line - Will I be coming back; probably for an annual special occasion. Multiple times per year? That is a hard one as we have eaten in Michelin Star rate restaurants in SF for less money per person but requires one to drive to the city. Plus one of our goals is to try numerous restaurants both in the Sacramento but also the Bay Area as we have friends and kids living there.

This was our second visit to The Kitchen and it was again and fabulously delicious and entertaining experience. From the start there are so many things happening up front, on the side, in the prep area and out on the patio... all relating to a gourmet meal!! Totally worth the experience!!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic first visit to the Kitchen
I had wanted to visit the Kitchen for a long time now, but was discouraged by the prices. Now that I've been, it is sooooo worth it!!! Dining at the Kitchen is more like an event than getting a meal somewhere. The Executive Chef was very entertaining, the food was incredible, and the service sublime. Someone in our group wanted milk and chocolate cookies, so he asked for that for our table of 11, and out they came. The cookie dough and the raw oysters are great to try before the first course. People easily stayed 4 1/2 hours or more. The halibut was so incredible. I recommend getting one of the wine flights and they are very generous with the pours - pretty much a full glass on each so you may want to share one. Already planning my next visit back to my new favorite restaurant.
