Loved it! We visited Phoenix recently and dined at all of Matt's restaurants. They were wonderful. Our waiter led us through the menu with wonderful suggestions. The cucumber jalapeΓ±o margarita was refreshing and delightful. Between 3 of us, we shared 3 different tacos, the stew, the beef skewers and the kale Caesar salad. The chicken, mahi and pork belly tacos were all good in their own way. The stew food stew was my favorite (and the recipe is online btw). It was spicy, creamy and heavenly. The beef skewers were pretty tasty, albeit not our favorite. The kale Caesar was good with the mandarin oranges. It was a little dark in the restaurant for 11 am, but nice atmosphere with the chandeliers etc. I would def go back and try for dinner time next time I'm in town.
Uncaring and Incompetent
Disappointing. Server (closest to entrance podium on September 15) seemed aloof and uncaring. My wife ordered a lemonade. I saw our server come out with our lemonade and chips - but detoured to the bar where she started talking and laughing with a colleague. It then took another 11 minutes exactly for her to serve my wife the lemonade and bring the chips that the bowl of guacamole was waiting for at our table. Then, and I would not have written this if not for what came next, I had to go ask the girl at the entrance podium for the bill as our server was again busy taking with her colleague at the bar. She finally came over with the bill and I gave her my card. Then she came back with the bill and asked for payment. I had to point it out to her that my credit card was in her pocket. She, without apology, took it from her pocket and walked away to process. This was the first restaurant I can remember NOT leaving a tip. I live in Denver and am not used to this crass behavior.

It was such a good experience, watching them make the guacamole in front of you with the freshest ingredients, best guacamole I've ever had. The salt Himalayan wall was so beautiful to look at, cocktails were great as well.

The food was extravagant and the service was amazing! We enjoyed dishes that we'd never thought we'd try, and the atmosphere was the perfect date night spot! The lighting was a bit darker than we'd prefer but we really did have a great time at the Mission.

My wife chose The Mission Old Town for her birthday dinner, and we met her Mesa family there last Monday. She called the restaurant for a reservation, no one answered but she was told they would call back. No call was received so I went on-line and made a reservation. When we arrived at 4 pm we were told we had no reservation, but we were promptly seated at what proved to be the table that was the closest table to the kitchen door even though there were only four diners in the restaurant. That turned out to be the best part of the night. We were seated in the darkest part of the restaurant and were told that the Manager would not allow them to improve the lighting as it would ruin the ambiance of the restaurant. We and other diners used our phones to read the menu and place our orders, When our food was served, we literally could not see the food we were eating. In regard to the food, it was delicious. Their bread pudding is Top Three all time. Their ambiance has room for improvement. Take a portable lamp if you dine at this restaurant.

One of my favorite spots when visiting Arizona! The food is fresh & you can taste the quality, the service is great and the ambiance is lovely as well. I really don't think you can go wrong with anything you order here. I wish they would open a location in Los Angeles. The Mission - if you're reading this open a location in Los Angeles!!!!

Tableside guacamole was amazing, along with the tacos and margaritas. Servers were friendly and attentive, and the ambiance was very cozy and inviting. Would definitely recommend.
Late night bite
Great steak tacos and best guacamole I have ever had! The restaurant was nice chic . Great tequila selection would recommend for late night out to eat
οΌtranslated from my non-English review ) The guacamole
οΌtranslated from my non-English review ) The guacamole appetizer put on quite a show--looked like the freshest ingredients, made to order. In reality, there wasn't even a masher; they just scraped at it with a little table knife in a container I refuse to acknowledge as a molcajete. The result was big, chunky slabs of avocado so firm the chips snapped and couldn't even scoop it up. The steak taco was literally a piece of steak set on a just-thawed corn tortilla with a comically large chunk of avocado on top. The cheese was sprinkled on as mere decoration, and it was even cold. At other places, a steak taco at least gets some salsa verde, or failing that, the holy trinity of onion, cilantro, and lime. Here the taco assembly was so lazy I felt insulted. The steak itself was cooked to death--tough, getting stuck in your teeth--and one bite tasted like chewing wax. The short rib taco swung to the opposite extreme with its seasoning. Anyone who's ever balanced a sauce knows: if it's too sour, add sugar; if it's too sweet, add vinegar. Our clever little chef decided to "balance" both sides at once and dumped a lethal dose of both sugar and vinegar into the meat. For the first time, I had the illusion that eating meat alone could give me diabetes. On top they scattered some red cabbage with no flavor and an almost nonexistent texture, leaving me baffled. It seems our smart-aleck chef realized the rib's texture was a mushy mess and wanted something crunchy for contrast, slapped his forehead, and went, "Yup, red cabbage it is." (If it were me, I'd use the simplest fix: a pinch of flaky salt and fresh onion.) At the end of the day, stepping on this landmine is on me, not the restaurant. If a place doesn't taste good, there will still be diners who don't really care about the food to keep it afloat, and cutting corners to save resources to get guests in and out is understandable. If I'd looked more closely at the photos in the reviews, I would've spotted some of the potential red flags.
Awesome lunch
Had an awesome lunch here on Sunday. Awesome guacamole and drinks. Great stop if you are in old Scottsdale. A great stop!

Fresh ingredients.
Great drinks and fabulous service. Stumbled in from out of town while in Old town area and was floored with quality!!

We had a great time at the Mission! We had the brunch green chilaquiles. The steak tacos and mahi mahi tacos. The guacamole was really good! They make it in front of you which is nice. Our family of four were seated right away. The service was great! I wish I could remember our server's name. She was kind and explained the menu to us. I also enjoyed the cozy dimmed light atmosphere the chandeliers were beautiful...gave it a Spanish acienda feeling, Thank you for the delicious food and great service!
Dark, noisy and overpriced
I think this place is overrated. First, the environment is more suitable for a noisy bar than for a decent restaurant. It is very dark inside and the tables are very close. It is hard to have a normal conversation with your friends. Actually, it is hard to see the menu too, which may help them to hide the food prices and the food itself ;) In fact, the food is not bad at all, but still quite misaligned with the prices they charge. I did not like the fact that the reservation via Opentable requires a credit card and they mention the charges if you cancel in less than 24 hours etc. Again, this is not an airline, it is just a restaurant. I hesitated to make such a reservation. The service is indeed very good. Also, there was something really odd. My credit card has a chip. This restaurant does not have any mobile terminals, when the waitress took the card I warned her that it may not work without the PIN. She asked me to write my PIN on the paper for her! Wow :)
Amazing meal and drinks
Exceptional food, drinks and service! The chorizo steak is incredible. This was absolutely the best meal we had while in AZ by far.
Modern Latin cuisine at its best
We had an unforgettable evening at The Mission. The tableside guacamole was fresh and showy, and the duck carnitas empanadas were a perfect balance of crisp and tender οΏΌ. The mesquiteβgrilled steak was tender and flavorful, and the mezcal cocktails were expertly mixed. Cozy fireβpit patio, warm ambianceβperfect for a romantic date night.
Best tasting, complex stew / soup ever.
The chef here has a dish that is modestly called Peruvian clam stew or Almejas al Vapor. But this is one of the best tasting and complex soups/stews I have ever eaten. Itβs a little pricey at $22 but weβll worth it. In fact. Almost ordered a second bowl. The flavors come from the Peruvian yellow peppers, shrimp, roasted corn chorizo and a host of other ingredients. It has multiple layers of flavors which will surely delight you.
Great If You Can Hold It
Great setting and great food. The only bummer was their bathrooms were out of order so you needed to go across the street to the parking garage.
Too loud
The food and service were both very good. As were the cocktails. The atmosphere is lovely. BUTβ¦.. the place is ridiculously loud. I understand close tables and lively conversations, but the music is pumped up to ear slitting levels. You have to really lean in and talk very loudly to be understood by your dining companion(s). If the management would lower the music by at least half, we would happily return. But will not under the present circumstances.
Ok, but loud and dark
It was just ok. Very dark, loud music, seating is too close together. Food was ok but nothing spectacular. Would not go back.
