The Whitebrook Monmouth Reviews from The Last Year
Outstanding
Went for the wife’s birthday, an excellent food tasting experience. Every dish carefully crafted with some incredible flavours from some real unique ingredients locally foraged.
The best in the valley
Always brilliant. Light. Loads of courses. Wonderful team serving. Amazing food and wine. What else do we need! Thank you. So consistent.
Absolutely amazing food but….
I’d previously visited the Whitebrook a couple of years previously, but never stayed there. I was looking for somewhere to celebrate a very special occasion for my partner and I, and saw a “rooms and food” offer, so booked it. Firstly, the Whitebrook is not cheap, and there are Michelin star restaurants at significantly lower prices, so we were expecting something special. Let’s start with the good stuff: The food was exceptional, form beginning to end. There wasn’t a a single dish we didn’t enjoy, and they adapted perfectly to one of us being pescatarian. The wine was delicious, but very expensive for what it was, and I do feel restaurants shoot themselves in the foot by such markups. Given it was a Thursday, and there were only 8 covers dining in total, I’d imagine they could do with more custom, so why not extend the “winter wine flight” offer of “2 for 1” to attract customers. Regarding the accommodation, the room was clean and served its purpose, but was small, and rather tired, and several fittings either broken or falling off. I realise that it’s “not a Hotel”, but again, the prices should reflect that. Unfortunately, it was the overall ambiance that lets it down badly. The “greeting” upon arrival was about as poor as it can get, and I’m afraid the sommelier is woefully unprepared to welcome guests. Furthermore, he was completely unable to acknowledge or engage with my (female) partner, who felt completely ignored. If Seńor R has a “woman problem” he should perhaps reflect on how that makes people feel. Despite my attempts to engage with him in his local (Spanish) language, his rather surly attitude failed to lighten. Thankfully the waiter Philip was absolutely charming, jocular and the complete opposite of his colleague, and was equally bright and cheerful serving the “tasting breakfast” the following morning. Given the number of covers dining, one might have expected that the Chef himself might have taken it upon himself to pop out and have a short interaction with his customers, but alas that did not happen. If the Chef/owner cannot be bothered, and his “front of house” cannot either, then I’m afraid that despite amazing culinary skills- some of the best I’ve ever had- I’m not sure they deserve to succeed. (I notice that they appear not to read their own reviews, or certainly never take the time to respond to comments, so again……) Did I enjoy it? Yes- the food alone made it worth it. Would I return? Sadly not- or certainly not at these prices.
Unassuming and unique - regional cuisine at its best
A long overdue revisit to The Whitebrook, it was to be our second Michelin Starred Welsh restaurant in 2 days. With the focus on ingredients locally sourced, grown and foraged - supplemented with fruit and vegetables from the kitchen garden - Chris and his team were awarded a Michelin Green Star in recognition of their sustainable practices and it shines through in the food we ate. Drinks and nibbles in the bar before dinner with a top notch Negroni, before moving into the dining room for our 9 course dinner. The front of house guys, Roman and Zsolt, provide a relaxed and quietly confident service, underlined with a great knowledge of the food and drink offered to their guests. Highlights of the menu were the Severn and Wye smoked eel with seaweed custard, truffle baked parsnip and the main course hogget 4 ways with an amazing rolled belly crisp. However, the halibut poached in Monmouthshire ham fat stole the show - a glorious dish. Having the wine flight with the tasting menu, Roman served some real off the beaten track selections with the “Little Bee” Pinot Gris from Devon and the Hunny Bunny by Judith Beck from Austria really different from the run of the mill choices usually seen with flights and both were a revelation. We took the additional cheese course and Zsolt expertly guided us through the selection of Welsh cheeses on offer with tasting notes and the optimum order to eat them. A real high quality dinner, well paced and packed full of flavour. The next morning, we were greeted with a delicious tasting breakfast menu with sublime sourdough crumpets, lovely bacon, black pudding and Charcuterie from nearby Trealy Farm and the best ever muffins - apple and meadowsweet. The food and service surpassed our previous visit and we will certainly return, our only regret is that The Whitebrook is not located on coastal Dorset!
Great food and service
The food was amazing, beautifully presented and balanced. The service was excellent and informative! All in all everything was excellent my only negative is that the restaurant itself is in the middle of nowhere which makes getting transport if you want to sample the great wine choice, a little difficult.
Definitely not Michelin star worthy
I've eaten in a lot of Michelin Star restaurants and expect a certain standard not just with food but decor, presentation, table set up, staff attention etc. The Whitebrook was underwhelming from the get go. Not terrible but not good enough that you feel that there has been enough attention paid to detail. I could go on about the peripheral details but I won't. Lets move onto the food itself. We'd contacted The Whitebrook prior to arriving and notified them that one of our party was dairy intolerant. Having done that at other Michelin Restaurants I would have expected alternatives to be in place. Not here. I got served exactly the same as my wife but minus the dairy elements so that each dish looked unfinished and certainly didn't deliver as a complete taste experience that the chef had planned. We're in 2024. Being dairy intolerant or Gluten intolerant is not such a rarity. You'd have thought there would be measures in place to make the diner feel considered for what is an expensive meal and a special evening. I certainly didn't have that feeling here. The other point that was a major turn off for both my wife and I was that each course that had a sauce with it was majorly over seasoned. The sauces were so salty that we couldn't finish each course. We were both really trying to turn a blind eye to the indiscretions at The Whitebrook and to enjoy the final evening of a wonderful long weekend in the area culminating with our gustatory experience at The Whitebrook. We were left feeling very flat and disappointed. Neither of us has ever felt that when leaving a Michelin starred restaurant before. Hope it never happens again.
Amazing experience
We went for a special birthday having never been before. The ambiance was terrific, the staff were attentive friendly polite and helpful, and the food was outstanding. Highly recommend and will return.
Absolutely superb
What a fabulous meal. Interesting, unusual, delicious ingredients, with friendly, highly professional service. One of the best meals we’ve had ages.
Stunning food!!
We were on holiday in the area and found this Michelin starred restaurant while googling local places to visit! What a find!! Beautifully restored building, and fabulous food concentrating on local, seasonal and foraged food. We had the 9 course tasting menu and it didn’t disappoint. The local cheeses were delicious and the local sparkling wine was so good we wanted to know where we could buy some to take home with us! Yes, it’s expensive, but worth it. The only feedback I’d give to the restaurant is that it was quite chilly in there, and a light in the car park would have been good. Otherwise, can’t fault it!!
Overrall not what I was expecting but the food is incredible
Phenomenal tasting menu with very interesting flavour combinations. We were celebrating an anniversary and were mindful of the price when booking Dinner, Bed & Breakfast but decided to go for it given the restaurant's reputation. The service is very understated and our welcome when we checked in and the service from the sommelier reflected that, so to that extent our visit didn't feel that special in terms of the overrrall experience. I appreciate this is not a hotel so was not expecting hotel facilities but our room (room 6) was very dark and gloomy and small, and the bathroom was in need of a refresh with poor attention to maintenance. The lounge area for pre-drinks was not the cosiest and lacked the sort of ambience I was hoping for. We didn't opt for the wine flight and asked for the sommelier's advice on a red wine. As the menu lent very much towards white wine choices he looked somewhat disgruntled and his advice amounted to take a look at the wine list and buy what you know and will enjoy - he then walked away! That was a surprise! We were a bit discombobulated by his reaction so switched to a bottle of white without any further advice from him. We did have a chat with him a little later on when he warmed up a bit! We thought we would not spend quite as much if we didn't take the wine flight but we were wrong as the mark up on wine is pretty hefty (not unusual of course). So, in summary, all in all the most expensive evening meal we've ever had and the food was amazing (it does naturally take a while to get through the 8 courses and we only had one gap between courses which seemed a little too long); however as an overrall arrival to departure experience it lacked a certain extra specialness which I was hoping for given the price point.
Very special getaway
Stayed for two nights for a celebration. All I can say is that it was faultess. Wonderful service from start to finish. Its remote location is part of the magic, in a beautiful wooded valley running up from the Wye. The rather plain white exterior belies what lies within. An intimate, contemporary, informal restaurant with some great artwork. The food is simply stunning, the default is a tasting menu, but as we were staying two nights we had a la carte on the second night. The very clever use of garden and foraged herbs ran through the whole menu, which delivered a very different and very pleasant experience. Every dish hit the mark without exception. The wine list was exceptional as the was the sommelier, with a very friendly and practical approach. We went with a Welsh white on teh first night and an English red on the second. Both were excllent. Our room was very comfortable and luxurious. Given the small number of rooms and the location on a very quiet lane. The quietness is remarkable, so delivered a very good nights sleep. Onto breakfast, also delivered in a tasting menu style, which was unsusual, with dishes on a par with dinner. All local ingredients cooked to perfection and portion sizes appropiate to the number of dishes.
Consistently brilliant, and for a tasting menu - never over whelming!
Long over due review of a local favourite. This is obvs no ordinary local though, instead carefully and thoughtfully prepared garden fresh (ie foraged) food, with brilliant tasting parings and twists (that work) and incredibly, in spite of the many courses, never leaving you feeling over whelmed - ie flavours / cooking approach (v little oil / butter) means its a wonderfully light tasting menu. I am only sorry i havent left a review before - but the staff are consistently welcoming, the wine selection fab - and we are always blown away by the flavours. Thank you all! ps - sure its not "cheap" but for the courses and quality its v v good value!

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it? |

Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
Bid and Buy Instantly
I have a big ongoing and it also shows someone is working on my bid. Today I see there is a " Buy Instantly " option at my portfolio showing same price I've bid for a reservation. I'm a bit confused, since my money has already been deducted from my credit card for the bid, do I need to pay one more time for the Buy Instantly? If I choose Buy Instantly, can I cancel my bid ( while someone is working on it )? Thanks!

You can only deposit $50 at a time until you earn the “Sales and Low Refund Medal” I believe. Im new to this as well but the ability to deposit more money at once and increase your amount of listings comes with that medal.

Anyone know how increase payout transfer to bank as I can only send $50 a day and they charge $5 for every transaction. There must be a way. I’ve contacted support two days ago and not a reply.

Just looking for a little reassurance. Thanks!
