Cold outside but warmer upstairs
In the middle of SoHo, near all the 'actions', this is a vibe and popular gay bar. There is an upstairs, but I find it a bit crowded. Unless you stand on the balcony but then it's cold. Decent place for a chat before dinner.
Be the first to Replynot a good end to my evening
The place was cold both in terms of temperature and welcome. All a bit barn-like and poker face by the staff. And they didn't have Cointreau, which I would have thought was a bit of a staple drink! But the worst bit was finding (on my return home and filtering through my receipts) that both I and my companion (on buying separate rounds) had been charged a service charge for the round - completely unasked and without any warning. While I don't begrudge giving tips for good service, a) we didn't get good service b) my drink of choice wasn't available, c) it wasn't a great place to spend my hard-earned money in and d) I'm not even sure that the tip/service charge would go anywhere but into the main funds for the organisation. But apart from that Mrs Lincoln . . .
Be the first to ReplyBusy on a Wednesday with mostly straight crowd. Beware the automatic 5% service on already expensive drinks. Noisy music
26/10/22 Wednesday late drinks We three middle aged gay guys were meeting a German banker friend in soho for a midweek meal and drink. After the meal in Pollo we wanted a quieter gay pub to have a chat in. Comptons upstairs was unusually noisy with thumping music, Duke of Wellington similarly. Both had no tables free. The Yard upstairs in the Loft was our nearest choice (having all been there in the opening night many years ago!) and in we went. The clientele downstairs has become more mixed, lots of straight couples. The decor was decked out for Halloween, quite expensively. Some decorations reminded me of The Hoist...'nuf said.... Upstairs we hoped for a quieter more male crowd but were again in a mixed crowd with blaring music. We did find a table opposite the bar, just, sharing with a trio of gay guys. A bit of a squeeze. Drinks everyone? Four beers. Up to the bar I went with my iPh Applepay. I thought the house beers (Yard Session IPA and Yard Lager) might be cheaper than the Continental offerings on tap (no real ales unfortunately as this is aimed at the younger crowd). I ordered two of each, taking the first three to my friends. There IPA barrel ran out so another was hooked up and after five minutes I got the (my) fourth pint. My card reader was presented and it was £27.72. I was offered the receipt... on returning to the table I examined the receipt which had automatically 5% service added!!! For bar service!!!!! I had not had a chance to get the bill first and deduct the 'service'. The waitress was pleasant enough and along with her colleague were very busy. No complaints there, just about the non discretionary service. Our German (a banker remember) friend was amazed at the price, as it was much more than he is used to in a London pub! He felt guilty as it was my 'round' (on a meagre pension) and it was nearly half the cost of an entire meal for four with a beer each in Pollo's! We struggled to make conversation in the noisy din and left after our drinks were finished. As you can expect we are unlikely to return! Looking at other reviews since I think there management may have lost their a lot of their gay crowd, no doubt the straights will keep it going, even in these days of the cost of living crisis! Some other reviews quoted a 10% service charge, maybe the management reduced it as custom declined or unfavourable reviews dominated?
Be the first to ReplyCute courtyard in the heat of the city
The Yard has been one of our favorite places to meet with my girls for many years now. We just love it. The only frustrating can be if it's an event, or Friday night, it's really crowded.
Be the first to ReplyVery aggressive bar staff
We were in this establishment around 5 weeks ago. The male bartender kept asking us to move along the bar to make space even tho there was no one else there. After the fourth time I carmly said that we were at the end of the bar and there was no more space left. The two other guest with me are both in the police service so no one was aggressive in any way. The male bartender slammed a glass down that was in his hand and came running round to the our side of the bar. When we met him half way he then decided to call for Sercuity “urgent assistance” apparently. We had a carm conversation with the Sercuity who told us that the bartender was in the wrong and apologised on his behalf. We were told that the management would be in touch unfortunately we heard nothing. As a really easy going person I would warn people against the bar for your own safety, if my two guests were not police officers I believe that the bartender would have used violence going by how angry he looked. STAY AWAY STAY SAFE!!!
Be the first to ReplyEnjoyable evening
My husband and I really enjoyed it here. Yes prices are expensive but that’s to be expected in central London. Was very very busy on a Saturday evening so not easy to get a seat, but met a lovely couple who we ended up sitting with. Atmosphere seemed good.
Be the first to ReplyRACIST DOOR POLICY
I showed up with my 2 brown skinned mates, well dressed, completely sober having just left a Jake Event at the Londoner Hotel. We were immediately denied entry. I asked why and was told its "reservations only". I could not believe my ears as streams of white people were flowing in unchecked for reservations or being stopped. I refused to accept this and pulled out my phone and began recording and asked the doorman to repeat his reasoning for not letting us in. He did a complete 360 and said we could now go in. I challenged him on his reasoning for not letting us in earlier and he said he thought one of my friends "looked" drunk which was not true at all. I asked him about how we can complain about our experience and he said to look at the company website. We walked in and I immediately asked to speak to someone in charge. We were led back to the entrance and the alleged "owner" came to meet us. We discussed what had happened and he claimed he was there to apologise to us. We challenged him on what he was was apologising for and he had no plausible explanation. I tried recording the full interaction but was aggressively handled by the bouncer and forced to put my phone away. Imagine living in a free country at the entry to the place on the public pavement and being forced into not filming. Shocking! Clearly the bar has a racist door policy to deny entry to people of colour, esp. brown skinned people. The "owner"was horrified we dare challenge them on this. The primary defence being no one was rude to us, they did not use abusive language etc so they do not understand issue. Unbelievable! It seems racism is OK as long as you show your racism in a calm respectful manner. Ordinarily I would suggest avoiding the place but we should not be silenced! I urge all you likeminded brown people out there to show up camera in hand in case you denied entry, challenge the "reservation only" policy and have a good time. There is no "reservations only" policy as the owner openly admitted - it's simply a ruse the company employs to implement their racist policy. It's a free country last I checked and racism is illegal. I will be taking this further with an official police report, if anything to put this place on the police's radar as no doubt this has happened before and will continue unless something is done. The irony is both doormen are people of colour but clearly trained by the white management to implement a policy against people of their own kind. Just shocking!
Be the first to ReplyLovely location, ridiculous prices
Have walked past The Yard Bar multiple times whilst being in the area but decided to go in. The courtyard area is lovely. Despite it being in Central London the prices are beyond extortionate. Went in February but still sat outside so well covered/heated.
Be the first to ReplyBizarre door policy!!
After a long day shopping my husband and I wanted a drink at the Yard but was told by the very unfriendly doorman we could not come in because we had food in our shopping bags!!! We had one unopened commemorative box of biscuits from Fortnum, hardly food!! But this once favored venue of ours have over the last few months gone downhill, with expensive drinks, a change in clientele and now bizarre door policy! We will not be going back!!
Be the first to ReplyPrices akin to theft.. AVOID
2 double gins - £24.50. The tonic came out of one of those tap things and the ginger ale was poured from a previously opened can. This place is a complete rip off - and looking at other peoples reviews it appears I’m not alone in this viewpoint. I will not visit this place again.
Be the first to ReplyUsed to be great
The place used to be really good, with friendly customers and a nice atmosphere. However, the past 6 months or so I have reduced the frequency I’m visiting and this is mainly to really high prices (£7.5 for a pint of beer or a small glass of wine, £6.5 for a single gin and tonic). Also, the crowd seems increasingly tacky, full of drunk girls who behave very weirdly and in a way harass the rest. Not sure how these issues can be rectified but currently it’s definitely not my first choice when it comes to going out
Be the first to ReplyEven Dick Turpin wore a mask
Everything about the bar was great, couldn’t be faulted. Apart from the prices. 2 x bottles of your average Corona (330ml) was over £12. They aren’t going to keep customers for long at them prices. I could of gone to Asda and bought a box of 12 coronas for the prices they charged for the 2 we bought.
Be the first to ReplyDisguised Extortion!!
10% service charge for service at the bar!! This is a rip off. May as well just increase the prices by 10% and admit that you’re the most expensive place in Soho!
Be the first to ReplyHarassed by rude barman
Came here with a friend for a drink and dance, was very busy, nice atmosphere. We ended up sitting down at a table of four inside when a group left but then was continuously harassed, interrupted and made to feel uncomfortable by one of the barmen every time he walked past us telling us we can’t sit there because other people wanted to sit down. Even the girls that were looking to sit down were confused as to why we got up to leave and were disgusted that he was bothering us. I don’t know what his problem was. Felt slightly racist and homophobic so we left which was a shame as I was excited to try this cool place but won’t be going back. The security man was friendly though when we entered!
Be the first to ReplyGay no more.
Once a stalwart gay bar in soho. No longer. Like many gay venues I’m afraid this place has been taken over by straight young men and women , many absolutely wasted - snogging and screeching. If you’re gay and fancy a drink with other gays (heaven forbid!) I wouldn’t go to the yard. Such a shame.
Be the first to ReplyBest bar in soho!
My absolute favourite pace to go for any occasion! The staff are all lovely and the drinks are even better😍 definitely worth a visit, or 25
Be the first to ReplyExtortionate price for a half of Stella
I was charged £4.20 for a half pint of Stella- outrageous! No bar prices were available. The service was efficient, but simply functional.
Be the first to ReplyWay too expensive for what it is
Seems to be one the most expensive popular bars in Soho with prices double of similar bars. That would be fine but it's hardly exclusive and frankly feels quite dingy. 2 standard drinks in here can set you back £30! You can get a decent cocktail in a hotel bar for that price, I doubt the staff in here know what a cocktail is. Go elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place in the heart of it all!
Service is great , staff are all absolutely lovely both nights we were there, only downside is the toilets dont seem very clean but overall really enjoyed it!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
Having been tonight I don’t know why people bother going here.Although the venue itself is nice the toilets are filthy the drinks are super expensive ( £7.50 + per pint of Estrella) and the table service is super slow(15 minutes) and clueless.
Be the first to ReplyVery rude
Walked in to get a table and immediately was told that kids weren’t allowed to there. I’m 21 and I would expect someone to ID me first before just embarrassing me in front of my friends. The service was just very rude I wouldn’t recommend.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent service and atmosphere,
Excellent service and atmosphere, some other reviews seen to think it’s expensive, location is amazing and so is the ambience, so you’re paying for those things. Some people might be put off a punt costing £8 but its worth every penny and is always a place I visit when in London
