Tonino Boston Reviews

In my opinion the best Italian food in Boston! You need reservations to eat here period! You walk into a very small restaurant with maybe 10 tables. They do have a counter that sits 2 looking into the kitchen that would be cool! Our server was amazing! Kathryn was very informative and engaging! She got to know us personally and we got to know about her. We had 3 in our group so we decide to eat tapas style, so we got several small plates and shared. In my option this is the best way to eat here so you can try several things. We asked Kathryn her opinion on several things and she did not steer us wrong. Everything was Amazing! From the wine to the desserts! I can't remember all that we got, so you will have to look at the pictures. If you live in Boston or just visiting. What are you waiting for! Cheers!
This is one of my favorite restaurants, ever.
The hype is real. The food is bomb. No misses, all hits.
Atmosphere, Food, and Waitstaff all 10/10
Great atmosphere, amazing food, and the waitstaff were sooo excellent. Highly recommend. You need to reserve far in advance but it is 100% worth the effort!!
great food and drinks.
even better people. definitely 100% recommend. they have great live music with lots of different types. Great venue for all

If you can't get a reservation online, try walking in and putting your name down on the waitlist! Overall I enjoyed my experience and the food at Tonino. My friend and I added our names to the waitlist and were called about two hours later. The staff were so accommodating and helped us with our celebration. The inside is very small but they fit as many people as they can. I started with the house spritz which was perfect. For an appetizer we split the pizza Bianca, clams and house olives. The clams were amazing and the pizza Bianca was the best side to soak up the sauce. The olives weren't my favorite because of the licorice taste. For an entree I got the cavatelli and my friend got the bucatini. Both dishes were fresh and full of flavor. I don't think we made the worst choices, but it felt like something was missing. I think we have to come again and try the specials or the favorites on the menu. We finished with a cappuccino and it was great.
We got soo lucky.
We got last minute reservations due to a cancellation. We went for my husbands birthday and we came from out of town so we were excited. Everyone was soo welcoming and nice! Amazing service! The restaurant is smaller but it fits perfectly to the restaurant. This might be my favorite pasta/italian experience. And we've been to Italy. The only bad thing is that I can't eat this all time! Sugar snap pea Caesar salad: AMAZING. Loved it and the concept. There wasn't anything left of the plate. The sweetness of the peas was so good with the dressing plus the crunch of them and the bread crumbs. Delicious Bucatini with anchovy chili butter: we split this and I'm glad we did bc it's very rich but it's soo good. Very umami and decadent. If you dont like fish then I wouldn't recommend bc bottarga is cured fish roe so it's pungent (but in the best way in my opinion.) Taleggio cappelletti: GET IT. ITS THE BEST BITE OF FOOD. we ordered our own because we didn't want to share and im so glad. I can't even describe how good it is. Tiramisu: we thought we were full until this came out and we devoured the whole thing. One of the best we've had. And it's a good size portion!
Hard to not give this place a 5/5.
Reservations are tough but if you set a reminder to check 30 days in advance when they open, it's a pretty seamless process. Inside is quaint and small and a half open kitchen which is cool. Server was very attentive and explained the menu. We got a gnocci special, the signature cappelletti and some pizza bianca to start. The pizza bianca set the meal up SO well and the tomato balsamic stracciatella combo was a MUST. The gnocci was fine but im not the biggest artichoke lover which is not the fault of the chef- so it was not my favourite. They did serve us the wrong dish but quickly brought out what we really ordered and let us keep the other pasta without extra charge (usually restaurants just take away the mistake dish so this was actually a pleasant surprise since it was also very tasty). I do think the signature talleggio cappelletti is a must order as it is super unique. My only complaint is it was a BIT salty but again, more of a personal preference I believe. Tonino is worth a trip
The reviews are right.
. getting a reservation to this place is DIFFICULT. I got lucky enough to snag a reservation during my desired time slot, checked out with quickness, and about a minute later after I refreshed everything was already taken lol. They're one of the top rated places on Beli, and for good reason! They're located in a quaint area in Jamaica Plain. We were visiting Boston for a vacation, and made the trek to get here via the T which was about 25-30 minutes from where we were staying (def worth the trip). Everything that we ordered was delicious! + Pizza Bianca (5/5): Our server recommended the flight if you can't decide on what kind of dip you want to get. This was the PERFECT decision because eeevery single dip was so delicious!! I thought I'd like the ricotta and hot honey the most, but my #1 dip was the eggplant caponata. The flavors were so unique - the eggplant was tender, and I loved how fresh it tasted. + Pepperoni & Hot Honey Pizza Slice (4/5) ($7): I think this was the only thing I felt like we could've skipped on, if I had to choose anything. It was definitely good, but didn't have that extraordinary "wow" factor that'd make me want to go out of my way to have it again. The bread tasted the same as the one in the pizza bianca. + Taleggio Cappelletti (5/5) ($27): If there's one dish you get here, let it be the cappelletti!! I've never had anything like it and I'm still dreaming about it to this point lol. The sauce was rich and I loved the vibrance the balsamic added to it. The explosion of cheese once you bite into it was alsooo an amazing flavor! Top 5 pasta for me :) + Panna Cotta (5/5) ($12): The basil sugar?!? Oooomg. I was skeptical when the panna cotta came out because of the way it looked lol but don't judge a book by it's cover! It's not too sweet. The apples give it that perfect tartness and the texture from the basil sugar is soo good you'd have to try it yourself to know lol Overall, from start to finish this was such a wonderful experience!! Our server was amazing, and every single employee was also so attentive. We were here to celebrate an anniversary and they were thoughtful enough to all wish us a happy anniversary + gave us a little card as a keepsake :) I'd definitely come back whenever I'm back in the Boston area!
We got lucky and were able to get a reservation the day
We got lucky and were able to get a reservation the day before we came for the last seating of the night. This restaurant is on all of the top lists for a reason. The dishes here are seemingly simple, but are executed well with high-quality ingredients. We couldn't decide between the different kinds of 'dips' for the pizza bianca, so our server was kind enough to put together a small tasting plate of each of the three. My personal favorite was the ricotta and hot honey. It's a classic - it was so light and had the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and creaminess. The clams are also another standout dish; it was perfectly cooked, and the broth was so flavorful that it could have been served by itself. The taleggio cappelleti is what I was most excited to try. It did not disappoint - the pasta still had a slight chew. Immediately after biting into it, it had such an intense cheesy richness that was followed by a slightly sweet tang from the aged balsamic. Of course, we had to finish the meal by trying all three of their desserts: panna cotta, cheesecake and tiramisu. The tiramisu was one of my favorites. It was more airy and light than most tiramisus I've had and was the perfect level of sweetness. Overall, it was a delicious indulgent meal that is worth the visit, at least once!
This spot is definitely worth the hype.
The pizza Bianca with burrata and the tomato relish was unbelievable. The service was just as good. Really tentative service all around. I'd say that was one of the best parts of dining here. My only reason for 4 stars was that the Cavalli? Was really tart because of the broccoli rabe. The portion was also mainly broccoli rabe not much pasta or sausage which was kind of underwhelming. Overall I would definitely come back, that pizza Bianca and the service sold me on this place.

I felt like I had to BATTLE for a reservation for two on a Friday night--went to Resy 30 days in advance, tried for 6:30, somebody had taken that slot, so grabbed the 8:30pm time. Because it was so late, my boyfriend and I got some drinks and apps beforehand elsewhere and then did dinner and dessert at Tonino. The staff were really friendly, upbeat, and fun! They did a great job looking out for us and giving us advice on what to order. The restaurant is pretty TINY but has kind of an elegant, dimly-lit, cozy feel. I got this fabulous Italian clementine soda, so yummy!! We also got the rigatoni amatriciana and the lumanche. Then, we closed with the tiramisu. LOVED everything we got, but I think the lumanche was the star. I'd definitely come back if I could get a reservation!!
Best Italian in Boston
one of the best Italian meals in boston. The food, service and vibe was perfect. Even on a Monday at 5pm the small place was packed and for good reason. Canβt miss the cappelletti pasta - order one per person, too good to share!
Nothing special
The food was OK but I was not impressed by anything. We ordered the plain pizza bianca as an appetizer. Our two entrees were lumache with mushrooms, garlic, creme fraiche, and rigatoni all'amatriciana. Both tasted OK but neither reminded me of the versions I've had in other restaurants. The portion size was quite minimal. When I asked for grated cheese for the rigatoni, I was told that the cheese was traditionally incorporated in the sauce. Not true, but even if true, why couldn't I get some grated cheese? The first glass of wine we had, from the Veneto, was absolutely horrible and seemed on the verge of turning to vinegar. Ordered a second glass of wine from Toscana which was better -- but cost more. The hefty 5% "Kitchen Appreciation" fee tacked on is really an insult. I've never paid that high a percentage even in New York. Why doesn't the restuarant pay its employees a better wage?
Small but mighty (good)
This is a tiny restaurant with amazing food. You must make a reservation or get there fifteen minutes before it opens to get one of the 1 or 2 tables or counter that is set aside for walk-ins. Otherwise it is hit or miss on whether you get in. Italian food with handmade pasta. They are very helpful with going through the menu to discuss allergens and food preferences. The house made focaccia that you can dip in sauces is fantastic - they have a dedicated chef just for focaccia and I watched him whip through making sheet after sheet. We had it with the meatball special for dipping but all of the dips sounded good. The main dishes are filling and reasonably sized. Decent variety for those who like different types of meats or seafood. Most dishes had a cheese of some sort (pecorino cheese mostly which is from sheep's milk), but you can ask which ones are best for non-dairy folks. They do not have a full bar - beers, wines, sake and liqueurs only so the cocktails are on the sweeter side.
Highly recommended!
Se ind visit to Tonino. Equally good both times. Great service, fantastic pizza (particularly delicious eggplant/ricotta). The anchovies with butter are to die for⦠pasta was al dente and wonderful. Great wine list and cocktails. But the pans cotta with honey melon was absolutely delicious, very unique summer flavor! Booking is difficult (always busy) but try walking in and take a chance! Definitely worth the visit to Jamaica Plain!!!
The last diner before you go to jail in the morning?
This is where you go. With the feel that somebody's loving nonna is delivering you a rich set of flavors and fresh ingredients in every bite. Here you are a guest not just another diner.
A good reason to head over to Jamaica Plain
Tonino at Jamaica Plain. I would frequent this place if I lived in the area. This tiny restaurant with only about ten tables has excellent food and the kind of service that is quite rare nowadays. The people are efficient, personable and create the warm and welcoming atmosphere you will immediately feel as soon as you enter. Taleggio Cappelletti, Aged Balsamic [Be ready for a yummy burst of cheese in every cap] Countneck Clams, Guanciale, Calabrian Chill, Gartic, Basil Pasta: Bucatini, Anchovy Chili Butter, Bottarga, Breadcrumb [anchovy is subtle] Tiramisu [hubby absolutely loved it but i was on the fence. Itβs delicious but it was too custardy for a tiramisu. I didnβt get much of the layers of lady fingers. Everyone around us seemed to love it tho] Pizza I love that you can order by the slice! We enjoyed a slice of the eggplant and ricotta.
Neighborhood perfection

The place is bespoke .... serious you can tell they love there restaurant. The portions are not huge but they are soo filling. I just can't say enough.
